  • Installing Mac OS X on a new hard drive

    Hi,
My hard disk got corrupted which had OS X Yosemite installed on it. I have purchased a new internal hard drive 500GB. I am stuck on how to install the Mac OS X again on the new drive. Any help on this will be much appreciated.
I don't have any backups to clone the disk neither I have a OS disc that came with the original. Please help!
    Thanks in advance

Internet Recovery is cmd-Opt-R, but if your Mac was built before 2011, it may not be capable of Internet Recovery.
If it can't do Internet Recovery, you'll need to find the original installation disks that came with the Mac. There may be other options, but that would be the simplest at this point.

  • Will a Mountain Lion install USB work with putting Mac OS on a brand new hard drive?

My MacBook Pro's hard drive has crapped out and I'm planning on purchasing a new hard drive for it.  However, this new hard drive will be completely clean and no remnants of Mac OS will be on it when I receive it.  But before my hard drains crapped out, I made a Mountain Lion install USB like the one made here: http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/17/make-bootable-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion-usb-install -drive/ .  If I install this new hard drive into my MacBook Pro, turn the computer on, and hold down the Option key, will I then be able to install Mac OS with this USB drive?  If not, please explain the steps that I need to take in order to successfully install Mac OS onto a brand new hard drive.
P.S. I do not have the install disc from when I bought my computer.

You can use the USB drive you created previously to install OS X in your new hard disk. Also, you can use Internet Recovery, if you want to > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
After installing the hard disk and starting from the USB drive, follow the steps to reinstall OS X. If there isn't any partition on the hard disk, close the installer and open Disk Utility.
Then, choose the hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk. After erasing the disk, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X

  • Installing Mac OS X onto an External Hard Drive

Will installing Mac OS X onto an external hard drive erase or mess with in any way files that are already on the external hard drive?
Can I safely install Mac OS X to an external hard drive that already has stuff on it to make it a bootable volume and still be able to access those initial files on the hard drive?

Will installing Mac OS X onto an external hard drive erase or mess with in any way files that are already on the external hard drive?
Not unless an Erase & Install is performed.

  • Please HELP!! MacBook stuck on "Select your Keyboard" screen after installing Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive!

Hello, I just recently replaced my internal hard drive in my MacBook [from a 250gb to a blank/empty 750gb]. I managed to get OS X Snow Leopard installed with the DVD. Setup seems to run fine at first, I get the screen in space with the welcome message different languages while music plays. Then I'm asked to select my country, then here is my problem- the next screen asks me to "Select Your Keyboard", I select & click "Continue" button, then my Mac is just showing the spinning beachball & it stayed that way all night =( I don't know how to fix this. Anyone experience this or have any solutions for me? I'd appreciate any help! Thank you! [I've been googling since yesterday with no luck on finding an answer].

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.

would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

  • I can't install Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive with a brand new optical drive.

I need help please. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. The hard drive crashed a while back so I bought a new one. The original Snow Leopard disc that came with it was scratched so I bought a new one of it as well. After trying/failing to install Snow Leopard on the new hard drive about a dozen times I bought a new optical drive as well. I installed the new optical drive today, tried to install Snow Leopard again and STILL got the same installation error messages. Any help that anyone might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Last error message:
Install failed: The Installer could not copy the necessary support files.

Did you partition and format the new drive first?
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Upon completion quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • Installing operational system (MAC OS  X) on a new hard drive

    Hey Guys,
My Mac Pro came with 250GB of hard drive so I bought a new hard drive, installed it (1TB) and it works just fine but; how can I transform this disk so It can become my main hard drive?
    - Do I have to install Mac os X on it? (how do I do that?)
    - Is this even possible?
I just want to have more space on my hard drive when working on big projects (graphic design) cuz I only have like 30 GBs of space on my main one so the 1TB one works for me just as an external drive but inside of my Mac Pro.
Can someone give me a hand on this?
    Thanks!

    I would buy more drives.
Clone your current drive to the 1TB, yes.
SuperDuper $29 is your bet shot.
Keep the old drive as backup.
Use #3 as new backup/clone or for TimeMachine.
Migrate all your project files to drive #4, just change the application preferences to new location.
Shame you waited so long. New drives will also give you a bit better disk performance.

  • Transferring from time machine onto my mac after its had a new hard drive installed.

I have a new hard drive in my iMac, using Mavericks 10.9.5.
I would like to restore from Time Machine, all my info.
The Apple video "Time Machine Basics"  talks about "migrating to a new mac"  and this is straightforward, but I already have logged into my new mac! I don't have the option to migrate.
How do I go back into Time Capsule for the first time?
If I just open Time Machine and start backing up my "empty new hard drive" onto the Time Capsule which contains the saved info from before, will I then be able to then just go back to the previous saved dates? Does that make sense?

Thank you, that makes sense, however, I've only just realised that I'm logged onto the new Hard Drive as "Test".
When I plugged it in, and turned it on, it just opened up like that, without me needing to log in as 'me' yet?
Is this ok, and the best option  to do as you suggest?

  • Unable to install clean Recovery & Application/drivers on new hard drive

My HDD failed on Satillite P25-s526. I replaced it with OEM new drive. Also upgraded the RAM from 512mb to 2GB's. I have attempted to do a full recovery of the system using DVD which came with the computer.  DVD formats partitions in new HDD, loads the restore tool & downloads. Upon completion, Restore Tool indicated 100% complete. Recovery Disk removed when indicated & system states "Please wait while windows prepares to start...". After a short while, the screen goes dark but the HDD indicator light indicates it's still processing. After a short period, the computer does nothing! I have left it on for at least 1 hour to see if it would reboot. Nothing! Upon restart, I do not get the Toshiba splash screen & the OS starts with the Windows XP/SP1 screen and then the screen goes blank! Boot to Safe Mode loads and then a pop up indicated that only part of the OS loaded and to reload. I have done this twice with the same results. Any ideas on what to try next?

Thank you for your quick response. I have been able to confirm that the new hard drive is in fact, the exact model and nominclature as the original (MK8025GAS HDD2188). I have also rechecked that I installed it correctly, since the HDD can be configured as both master or slave.  SET UP acknowledges the hard drive and it's capacity. The Rec & App/Drivers DVD appears to be in good working order.  I have been assured by the manufacturer that the HDD supplied is the exact replacement to the original and is not have ATF.
Toshiba trouleshooting for this HDD states that reports of systems not being able to recognize all available capacity of this hard drive & offers two 3rd party suggestions to correct the issue. They are EZ DRIVE by Micro House and Disk Manager DiskGo by Ontrack. Unfortunately, neither would do me any good since I cannot install them in the computer present condition. Further more, I'm not sure that they would help since SET UP indicates formatted Capacity of 80.012GB.
I was running Vista SP3 when the HDD crashed, I wonder if the drivers etc. have not reverted back to their original configuration with the Rec & App/Drives Disk?  Grasping for straws now!

  • Re-installing Linksys Connect on laptop after new hard drive installed

I have a E4200 router and had Connect loaded on my laptop. My hard drive crashed and needed replacement. I had no problem signing on to my WiFi once I got the new hard drive installed.
With the new hard drive, I now do not have Linksys Connect installed on my laptop. My question is: Can I re-install Connect with the router running perfectly well or will re-installing Connect with the router already up and running cause me problems?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Can I use recovery disks on a new hard drive on a dv4?

I know the hard drive is toast in my dv4. Can I use the recovery discs I made when I got the computer to load a new hard drive?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Yes you can. That is the purpose of having the recovery media.
Replace your hard disk with one that is of equal or larger capacity. That does not mean use a larger than 750 GB hard disk unless yours had one installed when delivered.

I am in the middle of a project using premiere cs5 and I have run out of hard drive space. Can I save it, buy a new hard drive and install Premiere and then reopen it again without  it effecting my project?

If you are talking about only having one drive for Windows and programs AND video data and project files, a better option is to buy a second drive and move your projects and video data files to the new drive
