Can IPad 2 repair companies reprogram the serial number ?

Recently sent my IPad 2 for repair and received what looks like someone else's refurbished one back.
They claim to have needed to replace the back cover,so had to reprogram the devices serial number.
Can they do this, or are the trying it on ?

If you sent your iPad to some third-party company, they could have done just about anything, including cannibalizing parts from someone else's broken iPad. There's no way to know. Apple does not authorize any independent company to service iPads, so if you patronized such a company, any issues will be between you and the company; Apple cannot help you.

    Quit Aperture.
    Go to your Macintosh HD and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", then "ProApps".
    Remove the File "ProAppsSystemID" to the Desktop, if it exist and restart Aperture.
    Reenter your serial number, hopefully for the last time.

    No, there is nothing already in Solaris 9 that lets you type a command and get a serial number.

    Unless you installed the Find My iPad app before it was lost then it's not possible to find it with a computer or the iPad's serial number.

    Not likely, only way would be if you registered through Find My...in iCloud and then only if it is attached to the internet would it show up.
    Notify the police so the serial number is in the stolen property data base...if it appears on the market people will know if it has been stolen.
