You don't need to come to the US to purchase a US iPhone. There are already thousands(estimate based on the daily posts we get here), most likely unused sitting in drawers in India right now. Just run an ad in your local paper...you most likely could purchase one or more cheap. They don't work and are all locked to AT&T, but that shouldn't matter...you'll have your US iPhone, no need to travel anywhere. Once you get it, and it doesn't work, don't bother posting here, we can't help you! .

According to this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937 All phone sold through official sources in the UAE are unlocked. As stated, though, They do not contain FaceTime and there is no way to add it. Other than that, it should work fine. Check the list above for supported carriers in India.

I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am experiencing constant network fluctuations on my iphone , no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/bars searching etc... Ifeel miserable after trying out all the options changed multiple sims, tried multiple carriers, restored the phone back and have set-up as new device but the problem does not get solved... its is so frustrating that after investing on a world's most expensive phone you cannot enjoy the calling features which the phone offers which is the main thing you own the phone for.. Rest of the things are working.. The funniest part I am not able to make calls or receive calls but can access the internet.. I have tried every possible thing and really very frustrated with this iphone of mine...I hope the problem gets solved.. would anyone have any solutions to this problem.. Does it mean one should never update software as I hear that after updating to IOS.5.1 the problem has started coming and same has been with there.... Apple says its a hardware failure which is very difficult to digest as sometimes I get 5 bars and able to make and receive calls but 95% of the time I am unable to. If anyone has any solution I will be very happy if he or share can share the same. Many thanks. its so disgusting to experience this on top of this apple does not support global warranty for the phone as you need to go to the country from where you bought the phone for replacement.. My experience has been that all anyone you can reach at Apple could tell you would be the same information shown in the web site. So the estimate of shipping within one to two weeks from time of order is probably as precise an estimate as you're going to get.

As Chris says. while the phone will work in India some features such as LTE connectivity may not work.
As to the differences, there is only one unlocked iPhone for sale form the Apple store. The T-Mobile version.
It is contract free and unlocked. But only if you buy it from Apple. If you buy it from a T-Mobile store it will be locked.
Also I'll repeat what Chris said: The warranty will only be valid in the US. so if you have any issues with the phone you won't be able to get it fixed or exchanged anywhere but the US.

You would need to return to U.K. for warranty service. The iPhone warranty is not international.

Can iPhone apps be updated via iTunes v download from home network?

I thought that by connecting my iphone through itunes on my laptop I could get all updates for my apps through itunes via synching and it would go very fast. I have 27 apps currently updating and it has taken nearly 35 mins and the app updates are still downloading. It's fine I guess when I'm home but I just updated apps a few weeks ago outside of my home network and AT&T had a field day with the amount of data I downloaded, especially since I couldn't cancel the updates.
Also, is there any blessed way to cancel the updates (yes I know they are meant to be there for a reason, but if I don't want them downloading via a cellular network, can I cancel or pause until I am into my home network?

First of all, your profile above indicates you are running OS X 10.6.8. Is this true? If so, realize this is the oldest version of OS X that supports the current iTunes (11.2.2). So once the next version of iOS is released, it seems likely that you would either be required to upgrade your OS X or no longer be able to sync your iPhone.
Given you are running an iTunes version that supports your iPhone, open iTunes on your computer, click the "Apps" tab, then click "Check for Updates" in the lower right. After you have done that, syncing your iPhone using iTunes will cause the latest versions of the iOS apps to be downloaded to your iPhone from your iTunes.

Did you follow the instructions? Like restoring your phone as new via iTunes on a computer? Did you get the "congratulations your phone is now unlocked" message in iTunes after restoring?
