Can IPhone be set to a disc mode?

Is there any way to just move some media off the iPhone (as if it were an external disc)?
More frequently I am away from my desktop (my laptop isn't big enough to hold ALL my data) and my experience is if I sync it with the partial media on my laptop that it wipes out the rest of the stuff on iPhone (movies from iTunes, etc.)
I have learned the authorize and deauthorize but I have wound up losing media close to every time I've used it.
thanks in advance for any references or suggestions

No. This is not a feature of iphone.
Iphone will sync itunes content and pics with one computer.

  • Can iphone be set to wake to apps screen instead of last used app?

Can the iphone 4s be set up to wake to the apps screens instead of whatever app was being used when the phone was locked?

The iPhone returns to whatever state it was in when the screen locked.  So if you had an app open/active, it will return to that.  If you close the app (press the home button) before locking the screen, it will return to the app screen (the page of it at least, you were on at the time you locked it).
But, there is no way to have it auto-close an app when the screen automatically locks.

  • Can iPhone be set to prefer WiFi connection over Wireless?

If I were to choose to switch to using a smartphone - say an Iphone -- I would want to minimize my dependence on its wireless connection to use its smartphone features -- use its  wireless capabiity to support being a mobile phone and when I'm not within reach of a decent and free WiFi connection particular when I'm at home and have a very robust WiFi network (802.11n).  I would prefer to use Wifi if a connectoin is available in order to minimize how much of my data plan I need to use.  Understand that iPhone5 supports both WiFi and Wireless. Downloaded the Iphone manual and searching  on the word WiFi produced zilch.  Thanks!

I was just trying to make sure we were insync on the terminology so we did not miscommunicate about your question.
With an iPhone you have a lot of means to handle information, not just the usual phone and data and WiFi, but if you have people with iPhones, or iPads, or Mac computers you can all setup accounts (free) in iCloud and communicate by iMessages that do not go through the normal cellular provider data bundle.  They use cell or WiFi and communicate with each other and the messages are not taken out of your messaging allowance.
Also, when you have WiFi available you can use FaceTime for telecommunication with another iDevice, do that with family weekly...great way to communicate.
There are many things you can do that minimize the cellular service charges or limits if you just keep track of how you are connecting with others.

  • Can iPhone be set to silent ring for all unknown calls

I want my iPhone to not ring except for numbers on my contact list.  Can this be done?

I understand what you're recommending, but I wish Apple would provide an option to automatically assign a silent ringtone to all incoming calls from numbers not listed in Contacts.  Then I wouldn't need to go back and assign a ringtone to every single one of my Contacts.
The problem I am trying to deal with is nuisance calls from telemarketers who assign spoof caller ID numbers with international area codes.  My phone number is registered with DoNotCall.gov, but when I enter the numbers from the Caller ID to report them on the DoNot Call website, it says the area codes are incorrect.  It won't recognize international area codes.  Every time I get one of these calls, the caller ID shows a different number.  So there is no way to block using individual numbers.  Plus, the calls aren't really coming from the numbers showing up on the caller ID, so blocking those numbers wouldn't do any good, and there is no way for me to find out the numbers that the calls are actually originating from.  And anyway Verizon Wireless only lets you block up to 10 numbers and I have gotten 10 of these calls in just the past two days.

  • Help, can't startup PB except by target disc mode

On normal start up, I get the "You need to restart your computer......" message with start symbol behind the writing. every time I try to restart the same thing happens. I've tried all the keys on start up tricks and the only ones that work are option/startup where I can choose Hard Drive, OS Disc, or Hardware tools. If I choose Hard Drive, it goes back to the kernal panic screen with "you need to .....". If I choose OS Disc, it goes to a light gray screen with the apple symbol in the middle and just stays there (also does this if I try to startup holding C with startup disc). If I choose Hardware Tools, it lets me test the hard drive and everything checks out fine but when I restart back to the "You need to restart.....". It will also startup in target disc mode hooked up to my iMac. All of my apps and files were there so I transfered everything, whew! I can then insert the startup disc into the PB and it comes up on my iMac in target disc mode. I then try to open and reinstall OS 10.4 but it tells me I have to restart to start the process and I can't do this in target disc mode. I just ant to be able to erase everything on my PB and reinstall OS 10.4 with the PB start discs. Is this possible? thanks....

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
    Have you recently added RAM?

You should be able to erase your PB (in target disc mode) hard drive while it is connected to the iMac. Use Disc Utility on the iMac. You can even install Tiger on the PB while it is connected to the iMac via TDM.

  • Ipod in disc mode not working on windows

i have an 80 Classic set to utilize disc mode. it mounts fine on my Mac (ipod is mac formatted) but when mounted on a Windows machine it wants me to format the drive.
any suggestions? am i missing something?

If you format iPod on Mac your iPod disk will save in Macintosh format and it will only use in Mac not for Windows (except you install some application to make Windows understand Mac OS X filesystem). But if you format in Windows (restore in iTunes on Windows) then you can use on both Mac and Windows.

Seems to me you have made all the right conclusions yourself: your HDD checks out fine, you were able to retrieve all your other files in Target mode, so it must be some corrupt OS files.
You just need to startup from your 10.4 install CD#1. To do this, just put the cd ready in its slot, push the power button while pushing the C key at the same time, and gently push in the CD whenever the system is ready (hold the C key while doing this and for as long as needed to hear the PB starting up from CD). If this works, you'll be duly prompted for the rest of the install process.
Before restoring your backup, it may be a good idea to restart in target mode and recheck the hard drive in Disc Utility or preferably Techtool (run a surface analysis to make sure the disc has no bad blocks). If you find any bad blocks, discard the harddisc: it will have caused your OS to be corrupt, and is not to be trusted anymore.
    Good luck!

  • Can I connect a macbook pro and an ibook g4 via ethernet with ibook in target disc mode?

Well, that's the question, really. I just bought a refurb macbook pro as an upgrade for my sister's elderly ibook - which has been a great computer, but which can't run any system newer than Tiger, and which has an extremely crowded hard drive. We began setting up the new computer last night, and got to where we were instructed to use migration assitant to transfer files from the old machine. This is where things fell apart.
    1. Although both machines were on my sister's wireless network, the macbook pro did not see the ibook.
    2. When we tried to connect the machines via firewire, we had a new problem - our particular macbook pro does not have a firewire 400 port. Same problem when we thought of connecting my sister's extermal verbatim drive. The macbook pro recognized the drive when we connected via USB, but, after asking if we wanted to use Verbatim for Time Machine, it didn't seem to see it when we answered "Not now".
I have ordered an adapter for our firewire cable, but, in the meantime, I have an ethernet cable at home which I used to transfer data from my older iMac G3 to an eMac. Can I use this cable while putting my sister's ibook into target disc mode, or must I wait for the connector? It is VERY frustrating having such a hard time moving information from one Mac to another. I've been a Mac fan (and evangelist) for years because Macs are generally easy and reliable. But now we're stuck.
I've been reading the boards and understand that target disc mode is the way to go, since we can't use migration assitant to move files between an Intel machine and a PPC. The new macbook pro is running Lion, while the old iBook is running Tiger 10.4.11. Neither of us has any experience with Lion, though we've both used Macs for many years.
    TIA!

Thanks, Niel! As it turned out, I had a LaCie rugged drive at my place which had both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 connections and cables. So I hooked it up to the old iBook, pulled my sister's stuff onto it as instructed in the ppc to intel thread, and then hooked it up to the Macbook Pro. Problem solved! - almost. We did have two issues:
    1. My sister has a lot of music - more than 12 gigs were on the iBook's hard drive, but only about 6 made it onto the Macbook Pro. Why is that? I also got a message, when I was trying to move the music folder from the old library onto the new one, that OS X needed this folder and it couldn't be modified. Again, why is that? How, then, do you move files from a PPC to a machine running Lion? Again, a lot of her music files did make it over, but not all of them.
    2. All her photos did seem to come over - in duplicate, maybe even in triplicate. That is so annoying! The same thing happened to me when I was migrating between my old eMac G4 and my iMac G5. Why on earth does iPhoto do this, and how can we make it stop?!
But we did manage to get a lot of her stuff onto the new machine. When we get the adapter, she'll be able to add the files that are on the Verbatim drive. You've been very helpful!

Make sure you have the Current Version of iTunes Installed on your computer
    iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
    Then See Here  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
You may need to try this More than Once...  Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps...
Take your time... Pay particular attention to Steps 3 and 4.
Some users have reported as many as 8 or 9 attempts were necessary before success.
After you have Recovered your Device...
Re-Sync your Content or Restore from the most recent Backup...

    If the issue persists...
Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...

  • Hi. Can I use a set of backup discs I made in 2010 to restore my iTunes library with the latest version of iTunes?

    Hi
I had my iTunes library on an external hard drive which has crashed. The data is unrecoverable. I've now bought a new laptop and I want to rebuild my iTunes library. I found a set of backup discs I created back in 2010 and although they don't represent everything I lost, they do comprise about 75% of the 25,000 songs in my library - so being able to restore using those would save me a huge amount of time.
The only problem is that when I load the disc, iTunes recognises it and even displays the tracks as a list - but I can't seem to find anyway of importing them other than manually importing each folder, which is only marginally better than having to re-import each individual CD again.
Previously when I've used the discs - i.e. the last time I changed laptops - I popped a backup disc in and iTunes automatically restored everything on it.
Is there a way of doing that that I'm missing, or has Apple decided, for whatever reason, to remove that functionality? I've Googled this problem and asked friends who are into Apple (the only Apple product I use is iTunes) but I don't seem to be able to get a clear answer.
    Any help appreciated.

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • My iPod Classic 160 is in disc mode and won't turn off, itunes doesn't recognize it - ¿how can I make it work again?

My iPod Classic 160 is in disc mode.  I responds to nothing.  iTunes doesn't recognize it.  It doesn't sync.  I've tried to restore and got error 1429.  Now it just stays in disc mode and won't turn off.  I'm keeping it connected to the charger so it doesn't go dead.  Is there anything I can do to resurrect my pod?

To get out of disk mode do a iPod Hard Reset.
Toggle the Hold switch till you dont see the red mark.
Press Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

    Do you mean iTunes library?
iTunes account is what you use to make iTunes purcahses.
iTunes library is what is on your computer.
It says my phone can only be set up woth one itunes account. How do I remove the previous account?
No, it tells you it can only be sync'd with one iTunes library.
Simplest way is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder (thisis the iTunes library) from old computer to new computer.

There is no such thing as a "sub-account."  Also, you probably mean iTunes library, when you say "account."  Your "account" in iTunes is your Apple ID, which is what you use to sign in to the iTunes Store to make purchases.  iPods are associated with an iTunes library, not with an Apple ID (iTunes Store account).  You'll need to clarify...
So, this is what I think you are saying.  You previously shared an iTunes library on a computer with your friend.  Your old iPod was synced to that iTunes library.
You got an iPhone, and at that time, you set up your own iTunes library.  Is that on a different computer?  How does the iPhone affect your question about the iPod?
You got a new iPod.  What is your "old iTunes"?  Is that the iTunes library you shared with your friend?
