Can iphoto '9 read pictures edited in iphoto '11

I recently took some pictures for a family member.  I have iPhoto '11 and they have iPhoto '9.  I edited and burned these pics onto a DVD for her.  She can't seem to pull them up in iPhoto '9.  So the question is, can you view pics in iPhoto '9 that were edited in iphoto '11?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes iPhoto 09 can certainly view pics edited in 11, but it can't read the 11 Library.
So, if you burned these to DVD using iPhoto's 'Share -> Burn'command, what you've done is burn a mini iPhoto library to disk.
Try export the pics: File -> Export to a folder on the desktop, then burn that folder to disk with the Finder.

  • Why can't I do cumulative edits, like in iPhoto 6?

I've just bought a new iMac (Core i5) running the latest iPhoto (9). It has some useful improvements over iPhoto 6 which was the previous version I used, but one thing has gone - I can't do cumulative edits any more.
In v6, I could sharpen a soft picture 100% then navigate away so iPhoto saved my edit. Then I could go back into that photograph, click Edit again, and all the sliders would be reset to their default zero settings. I could then add more sharpening to the picture, get iPhoto to save it, return if necessary, sharpen more, and so on. This was a godsend where an edit needed to applied more than once.
Now, I can't do that any more. When iPhoto saves my edit and I go back into that photo, the sliders are where I left them!!!! I can't ever apply more than 100% sharpening to a picture. That *****, really bad.
Why did they change that? It seems so unnecessary. The Revert to Original was always there, and it still is - so why can't I apply cumulative edits now?

But this allows you to unsharpen without having to go back to scratch.
It is not a question of treating you like a grownup, it is a question of preventing JPEG artifacts.  In the old way, you had to continually re-JPEG the image, losing quality and detail with each editing pass.  Now it always starts fresh with the master.
But I am not the engineer, so I don't know if this was a conscious choice or a result of CoreImage.
I don't ever want to unsharpen (i.e. blur). And even if I did, that was possible pre-iPhoto9 by sliding the slider into the negative band from its midway position. It's extremely difficult to oversharpen in iPhoto, even cumulatively, as the control (IMO) is usually superior to Adobe's.
I found iPhoto 6 (and now iPhoto 9) had subtle, but high quality edit controls. The chances of JPEG artefacts - at any rate from a keen amateur photographer like me - were around zero.
I believe that what I wanted could have been implemented with a simple Preferences choice :
O  Maintain edit slider positions even after Save (non-destructive editing)
O  Reset edit sliders to default positions after Save (destructive editing)
That would have made everyone happy. Now, for those pictures which need cumulative sharpening (admittedly, a small number), I may as well do everything in Elements.

  • Can't find my pictures in iphoto

Helllo, I am new to the iMac and having some start up problems. I use photoshop cs4 for photo editing and I just edited a pic. I want to access it in iPhoto now but I can't find the picture. I try to import the new pic but it tells me it is already in the library. I go to search and type the filename and it doesn;t find anything This is really frustrating can someone help me?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Below is the correct way to use Photoshop with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

The photos you've already edited with Photoshop are in the library but iPhoto doesn't know they are there. Also since they are inside the library package iPhoto assumes they have already been imported and won't import again.
If you can find just those photos you edited with PS and don't show up in iPhoto and move them to the desktop you can import them. However, do not rename, move or otherwise change the contents of the iPhoto library from the Finder. That is the cardinal sin if iPhotol

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto update from Mavericks deleted my library. How can I get my pictures back?

Soo my iPhoto just decided not to find my photo library anymore.
When I open iPhoto, it only opens a windwo where I can decide which library I want to open, but gives me no choices, the list is empty. Normally this window opens when my external HD is connected to my macbook since then there's two iPhotos available, but now it just doesnt find even one.
I had another problem with the iPhoto on my external HD, i wanted to open it but a window opened to tell me that my library is used by another programm or that the library can't be read anymore. I was able to save those pictures by showing the contents and copying the pictures.
Buuuut now on the macbook, when I do the left click thing to open the contents of the package, there are no pictures in it at all, no folder has pictures in it. When I copy the version from time machine, nothing changes. iPhoto has a size of 1.7 Gb, which is way to small. God dammit.
How can I get my pictures back?

    Thank you Terence!
    Okay, so here the details:
    iPhoto Version 9.5.1
    OS X Version 10.9.1
So here what I did, detailed. (pardon my english, I'm swiss)
I downloaded Mavericks, few days later updated iPhoto (the iPhoto icon was orange before and turned blue after the update). All went well, until one month later, all of a sudden, I was not able to open my iPhoto on the external harddisk. A window opened to tell me that either my library is being used by another programm or that it can't be read anymore. To solve this problem iPhoto tells me to do several things, for example shut down the computer and then open iPhoto again, or set up my library again or open iPhoto by pressing command and alt. But non of those instructions helped. So I opened the contents, I looked for the folder with the masters of my pictures and copied the whole thing onto another harddisk.
I think I got those Pics saved, but I still can't open iPhoto on the external harddisk.
Oh and by the way, the iPhoto icon on my external harddisk looks different now, it's three pictures in a row and the one on top shows a redish flower.
So now, two days later I try to open the iPhoto on my regular macbook. A window pops up and says that I have to choose a library that I want to open. (iPhoto usually did that when I had my external harddisk connected since there were two different librarys then, one on my external, one on my computer) But now, instead of showing me the library's I can choose from it only shows nothing, no list or anything i could even choose. And then below there's this button that says something like "create a new library".
    So what I did:
I open the contents and looked for the masters of my pictures, but there weren't any pictures at all. The iPhoto has a size of 1.7 GB which I think is too small for all the Pics and videos i stored in there.
I tried to get the IPhoto from Time Machine, but nothing changed. Iphoto still's 1.7 GB.
I opened the file "Pictures" in the Finder, but there's no such file like "iPhoto library", like it's deleted or something like that.
So i think that I used iPhoto usually, nothing speciall. I imported Pictures from my iPhone or camera and left them there.
    Does that help?

  • Help, can't see older pictures in iPhoto

In my iPhoto library on the most recent events and pictures can be seen. By recent I mean mid 2010 onwards. The ones I can't see date back to 1999. These have blank thumbnails and when I click on an image - nothing.
Information like event name and date and the number of pictures inside is still intact as as the name of all my albums. The preview at the bottom of the screen shows the photos but after rebuild can still see older events but everything is blank now.
I noticed the icon beside iPhoto library is just a plain white file and not the iPhoto icon. After hitting "show package contents" I also notice the icon on the AlbumXML is also plain white file icon.
I tried iPhoto rebuild - nothing.
    I tried BatcMod - nothing
I tried iPhoto Library Manager - rebuilt the photos and events I can already see.
Can I go back in Time Machine and pick an earlier version of my library - if so how do I do it?
I have more than 19000 pictures and am praying I haven't lost them.
I recently upgraded to Lion and am not sure if this is the reason.
    Can anyone help me PLEASE??

Hi Terence - thanks for your reply.
So what exactly am I looking for in Time Machine and how do I restore it?
    Is it my iPhoto library?
Appreciate any help you can give me.

How do I share the library and book with them?
Copy the library to a thumbs drive and give them the thumbs drive.
The drive needs to be formatted MAcOS Extended (Journaled), with the Ignore Ownership flag enabled.
See this link:  iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
The clients will need to use the same iPhoto version as you are using.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library. Select the checkbox to include orphaned photos.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
