Can iPhoto or Aperture optimize photos? If not, best low cost program?

I know in a program like Adobe (Macromedia) you could take a photo and optimize it and have it be 1/5th the size yet still look the same.
Anyone know if any apple products, or something in iLife do this?
Thanks!

When you export from iPhoto as a jpeg you can set the jpeg parameters to make the photo as small as you want and vary the quality to reduce the amount of disk it takes outside of iPhoto (iPhoto keeps your original so you can always go back =to it)

  • My Mac Pro had new hard drive installed. I downloaded the latest iPhoto application. All my photos have been restored to a folder which I dragged to the iPhoto icon. The photos are not down loading.

My Mac Pro had a new hard drive installed. Everything was restored by Carbonite except my photos. Carbonate restored them to a folder and the folder was dragged over the newly installed iPhoto app. The photos are not installing. What next?

What happens when you try File -> Add to Library?

  • Can iPhoto(1) & Aperture(2) share library so I can view w/ 1 & edit w/ 2

    Here's my situation.
I'd used iPhoto for years, but recently switched to using Aperture. When setting up Aperture, I "imported" the iPhoto library by electing to leave the photos in their current location (i.e. in the iPhoto library). Any photos I subsequently imported into Aperture were placed in the Aperture library.
With iLife '11 out, I'd now like to use iPhoto as my photo browsing program, since I like all the new features that Aperture is now lacking from a photo-viewing, book creation, etc standpoint. However, I prefer to use Aperture as my photo editing program.
In other words, I'd like to use Aperture to import photos from my camera and do any editing (which I tend to do on nearly every photo); when I want to view or share photos, I'd like to use iPhoto '11.
    Is this possible to do?
    Message was edited by: Argelius

when I want to view or share photos, I'd like to use iPhoto '11.
In iPhoto: File -> Show Aperture Library and drag the images from the resulting window to iPhoto.
This accesses your Aperture Previews. However, note that if you subsequently re-edit the photos in Aperture this will not be reflected in iPhoto.
My 2 cents: Stick with Aperture. If there is something specific that you want an iPhoto template for, then bring over those photos for that job. What you're proposing is unnecessarily complex. Keep it simple stu...art!
    FYI:
Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
If you want to go back to iPhoto, or want to share full sized files with iPhoto:
    1. Export all your Masters
    2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.

  • Difference between iPhoto and Aperture and photo storage

I'm thinking about upgrading from iPhoto to Aperture but I'm a little confused about the differences in the way photo edits are handled. The iPhoto to Aperture page says that Aperture stores photo changes in one photo rather than duplicating them, therefore taking up less space. BUT they also use a unified shared library. So how is it possible for Aperture to handle edits differently if the library is now shared between the two applications?

Aperture may save you some space if you choose not to generate previews, but then you won't be able to integrate with other apps.
As Terence Devlin says. But being able to manage the Previews is quite a space saver. In Aperture you can selectively generate previews only for the photos that you want to share with other applications, and you can specify the size and quality of the previews you want. iPhoto on the other hand will always create previews for all photos, and all in very high quality. In Aperture I delete previews for redundant photos and keep the previews only for my highest ratest photos that I am likely to share with other applications and want to use as a screensaver or slideshow.
If you share your photo library between Aperture and iPhoto and edit a photo in iPhoto, then iPhoto will add a preview for this photo, even if you disabled previews in Aperture.

  • ITunes can't see Aperture album photos to sync with iPhone??

I had to export my Aperture library to downgrade from version 3.2 to 3.1.3 due to all the bugs in 3.2.  Since that time, though there are photos in my albums that I can see, edit, etc these pics are not showing up on the Photos screen of the Sync prefs when my iPhone 4 is plugged in.  The albums themselves all show up when I select to sync with Aperture but it shows "0" photos in every album despite the fact that all the albums have photos in them.  I have repaired permissions on Aperture library, on the computer, upgraded to iTunes 10.5, restarted the computer.  I'm guessing there was a preference file that might have linked the old Aperture library (no longer in the "Pictures" folder) to iTunes photo syncing with iPhone.  New Aperture Library has same name and location as the old one but iTunes just isn't seeing these photos.  Any suggestions on fixing?

I made a duplicate copy of a picture and did some editing of it.  I added sepia tone, etc.  When I go to Shutterfly to upload the edited picture, I can't find it.  I see the original, but not the edited duplicate.  I shut down the computer last night and let it update and checked it again this morning, but still can't find the edited picture.  I know it is "in there" somewhere, because when I open Aperture 3, I can see the edited pic.  Any thoughts?  Thank you.

  • Can iPhoto automatically adjust one photo to match another one?

    Hi everyone,
I would like to know if iPhoto (or any other application) can do the following neat trick.
Let’s say I have two very similar photos, only differing in parameters like tint, exposure, and contrast for example. Is it possible to have the application compare the two photos and automatically adjust the tint, exposure, contrast, and so on, of one photo so that it looks exactly like the other one?
Maybe no application can do that, but then do you know of any trick to help doing that manually?
Thanks in advance for any much appreciated advice.

iPhoto can't do that and I've not seen or read of any application that can. It would take some very sophisticated analytical software to be able to do that.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Just installed Iphoto 6 and many photos will not import to Iphoto...

About half of my photos from one of my rolls from this Spring will not import into Iphoto6. I can open them up from my hard drive but they will not import into Iphoto. Any tips?

    Chris:
Even though you've gotten back up and running if you have any thumbnails that show up as blanks again try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
The blank thumbnails after updating to v6 are often a result of permissions on the files getting messed up somehow preventing you from having access to them. Running BatChmod on the library folder as demonstrated will force the correct ownership and permissions on all of the files.

  • Iphoto 08.  Event photos are not all visible under "photos"

I have a number of photos that are visible when I look for them by event. However, when I switch to photo view they are not there. Any recommendations?

Events and photos are simply different ways of viewing the same iPhoto library
Do you have "event titles" turned on in the photos view so you can verify this?
My guess is that the photos view has event titles turned off and that the photos your are "missing" are simply sorted somewhere different than you expect

  • In iPhoto, one upload of photos does not appear in events

I recently uploaded ~30 photos to iphoto from a Canon SD750.  The photos appear in photo mode, and are split into an event in photo mode (I even named the event in photo mode), but do not appear as an event in Event mode.  Just previously, I uploaded ~80 photos from a Nikon S9500 and all worked fine.
Iphoto is up to date (9.4.3), and using an iMac w Intel 2.93 GHz Intel Core i& processor, 8 GB memory and plenty of HD space.  Using of 10.8.4.
    Any thoughts are kindly appreciated.
    Dave

In Photo Mode, select one of the photos and right click on it. Then choose 'Show Event'. It will bring you to the Event.
Yes, TD, that should show the event, if it exists. But I am curious, why the event is not showing in the Events view in the first place:
but do not appear as an event in Event mode
I am sure, Dave has checked that thoroughly, before posting the question; and I want to exclude any library corruption. Is there an iPhoto glitch, that occasionally hides newly imported events in "Events" view?

  • IPhoto downloads the entire Photo Stream every time it starts. How can I stop this? Can iPhoto only download the photos on Photo Stream that are new only?

iPhoto downloads the Photo Stream. No problem.
I quit the program, turn the computer off.
Next day, I turn the computer on and start iPhoto, and it downloads the entire Photo Stream library again. It just takes time for iPhoto to download the entire library every day. Can't it just remember the pictures it downloaded and just download the new ones?

Both my computers do this. I tried to rebuild my library and even re-installed iphoto, but neither fixes the problem. Very frustrating.

  • Can iPhoto app share multiple photos at once to my photo stream?

I would like to share multiple edited photos from iPhoto to my camera roll but it only allows me to select one at a time... I find that to be kinda crazy when I have 8 photos to export... Every other sharing option allows me to select and share multiple at open time.
    Thanks for your help, Jason
I have the new iPad (3rd generation)

I'm experiencing the same problem on my iPad 2. No problem selecting mutliple photos, but when I try to share them to the Camera Roll, this option is greyed out. I don't have this problem when I share to iTunes. Any assistance would be appreciated.
