Can it be true ??

Hi, I always thought that I would never get to play Battlefield 2 on a Mac.
However, I almost bricked my pants when I saw the title of this 4min movie.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8761684797348166748&q=battlefield+2
Can any Techies out there please tell me if its possible that if I buy the right Mac, ill be able to play Battlefield 2 on it ?
If so, what Mac would be most suited for playing it.
Can you tell me a Mac (Wether its a laptop or desktop, I dont care much (Althoug preferably a desktop)) that will be best for playing this towards the higher end of £2000 ($3200) (Just the computer)
Any thing I should know about it, Processor speed, price, Graphics card, etc
Please...tell me, you will really be of great assistance to me !
Im typing right now with one hand, and am on the edge of my seat with excitement !!

Welcome to the discussions!
Yes, your eyes do not deceive you. Any Intel based Mac will be able to run Windows and therefore can play and game that is released for that other OS. In order to run Windows, you will need to download Apple's Boot Camp and purchase a copy of Windows. Once that is done and they are installed, you can play BF2.
Which Mac? Well, here it gets a little trickier. If you want an al-in-one type desktop Mac, then the iMac with the 256MB video RAM upgrade is likely the best candidate. If a portable is your preferred computer, then either the 15" or 17" Mac Book Pro with the 2.16GHz Core Duo and 256MB of VRAM.
I would avoid the mini and the Mac Books (non-Pro) since they do not have dedicated video RAM. It will make a difference in your gaming.
Of course BF2 will still play on those, but since they are not upgradable - as far as VRAM goes - future games might not play very well. None of the Macs I mention can change video cards, but at least the iMacs and MBPs start with much better video.
Stick around. This is a great place to learn about Macs and once you get yours, we will teach you the secret handshake - LOL!

  • Can Flash do true vector graphics?

    I created a drawing in Flash with the pen tool and paint
    bucket. Some of the drawing I may have used the line segment tool
    and connected the points. Other parts of the drawing I may have
    started with a circle, added points, and strecthed parts to make my
    desired shape. I exported the file to an .eps format.
    I want a drawing to be transcribed to a T-shirt.
    Unfortunately the two shops I've worked with know CorelDraw
    and not Flash. One lady knows Illustrator and I have also
    exported to an .ai format for Illustrator. However when
    they open those formats of my drawings come as individual
    vectors with outlines around each piece. They said they would have
    redraw the artwork in CorelDraw at a major expense. Can Flash do
    true vector graphics such that a drawing of a figure, for example,
    with many different colors so that the exported .eps or .ai file is
    a true vector graphic and not all in pieces? Or should I go with
    Illustrator CS3? I have used both programs and most of the drawing
    tools and methods seem to be the same, does Illustrator create true
    vector graphics?

    While your code might be correctly written, a 1009 error is not about incorrect code.  The 1009 error indicates that one of the objects being targeted by your code is out of scope.  This could mean that the object....
    - is declared but not instantiated
    - doesn't have an instance name (or the instance name is mispelled)
    - does not exist in the frame where that code is trying to talk to it
    - is animated into place but is not assigned instance names in every keyframe for it
    - is one of two or more consecutive keyframes of the same objects with no name assigned in the preceding frame(s).
    If you go into your Publish Settings Flash section and select the option to Permit debugging, your error message should have a line number following the frame number which will help you isolate which object is involved.

    The one you are looking at I believe is an older model and does not have very good reviews for working with an AppleTV2 / iPad 2 setup.
    Here is the one that has worked for our district:

    I can't say if the one you are referring two works or not, however I can say that based on the reviews, it looks like you may run into problems with the $45 version.

    The patch-sets for products are available through metalink.oracle.com for customers with support and maintenance.
    I am checking now, but I believe 9.0.4.8 was included in the 10.1.2.0.2 release of OracleAS. This means that it should also be the version downloadable from OTN.

    No. Apple does not charge. It is entirely up to he carrier to set conditions and fees for unlocking.

  • How can I display True/False in my dropdownlist as "Yes" and "No"?

    Hi All,
    I want to bind a dropdownlist to a boolean value (so it's either true or false).  I'm particularly interested in using two-way binding to when the user changes from "yes" to "no" the boolean value automatically changes from "true" to "false."  But, I want the user to see "yes" and "no" as the options, rather than "true" and "false".
    How can I display "yes" and "no" and still take advantage of binding?  Or can I not use binding in this circumstance?
      -Josh

    Solution 1:
    In order to display Yes/No for True/False, you may specify labelFunction for the dropdownList.
    In MXML:
    <s:DropDownList labelFunction="myLabelFunction" />
    In actionscript:
    private var arr:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(["true","false"]);
                private function mylabelFunction(item:Object):String
                    if(item.toString() == "true")
                        return "yes";
                    else return "No";
    OR
    Solution2:
    may be u can try making an array collection like
    private var arr:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection([{label:"yes",value:"true"},{label:"no",value:"false"}]);
    and specify labelField for the dropdownList like
    <s:DropDownList labelField="label" dataProvider="{arr}" />

    Yes, it can be true.  There is a limit to how far back some versions are available and Acrobat Standard versions especially so.  Every once in a while I will say a version is not available and someone will pop up and say otherwise.  I can only identify the resources where you can search to see if you can find it.  The first link is likely where you have been already...

  • Can't print True Type fonts

    I have been unable to print certain true type fonts on OS X from my HP laser printer. I had no trouble printing from OS X on my past Powerbook, and then realized that the difference with my current machine and past machines was that this is the first Mac I had that didn't have OS 9 installed. On my past computers, I had installed Adobe Type Manager (ATM), but of course didn't have it on my current Powerbook.
    Is there an ATM for OS X? How can I get my true type fonts to print like they used to on my HP Laserjet?
    Thanks for the help,
    Bill Nealey

    I have been unable to print certain true type fonts
    on OS X from my HP laser printer.
    which ones? where were they stored?
    I had no trouble
    printing from OS X on my past Powerbook, and then
    realized that the difference with my current machine
    and past machines was that this is the first Mac I
    had that didn't have OS 9 installed.
    This should make no difference. You can place OS 9 TrueType fonts in the Library/Fonts folder instead of the System Folder/Fonts folder if you want.
    On my past
    computers, I had installed Adobe Type Manager (ATM),
    but of course didn't have it on my current Powerbook.
    Makes no difference unless you're running Classic.
    Is there an ATM for OS X?
    No. OS X uses PDF for both screen and print display. ATM is required only for Classic/OS 9.
    How can I get my true type
    fonts to print like they used to on my HP Laserjet?
    Put them in a font folder where the OS will see them. Possible font folders:
    1 Library/Fonts
    2 <user>/Library/Fonts
    3 System Folder/Fonts

  • 3G vs Edge - Can this be true?

    An article I read on line:
    *We've all read articles about why the iPhone won't sell because it doesn't boast the latest and greatest 3G technology, which can transmit data at 1.8, 3.6, 7.2, and in some places, 14.4 megabits per second. Instead, Apple chose to go with the more ubiquitous EDGE system, which tops out at 0.2 mbits per second here in the US, and presumably will do the same in the UK and Germany when the iPhone launches there next month.*
    *But the question left unasked as been, "Does 3G really improve the user experience dramatically?" Most pundits would reply, "Well, of course Internet experiences improve with higher bandwidth. That's why the world went broadband." And if the pundit is having a bad day, they'll add "Duh."*
    *Funny thing though. They're wrong. Bandwidth doesn't affect the mobile phone experience nearly as much as most people think. And in some cases, high bandwidth Internet is actually worse for the user than a low-bandwidth one.*
    *How can this be? Because:*
    *People confuse network bandwidth with latency. Think of latency as how long it takes bits to go from the server to your phone, while bandwidth is how many lanes of highway those bits can use to get there. Because mobile phone networks use narrow-band radio signals, their latency is on average 2 to 10 times that of a wired network. And because of the way the Web HTTP protocol works, the quality of a Web user experience depends much more on low latency than high bandwidth, because Web pages typically contain lots of different elements such as pictures, ads, and widgets coming from many different sources. The result: loading Web pages on a 3G phone may actually take about the same amount of time as a phone loading those pages over an EDGE network because all the network time is spent setting up and tearing down connections, not actually sending big amounts of data. And so far, most carriers have preferred to optimize bandwidth at the expense of latency. Why? Because it's more marketable (see erroneous analyst quote above).*
    *High bandwidth radio networks are more error-prone. Because of the sophisticated signaling needed to do high-data rate transmission over narrow-band radios, higher bandwidth networks don't do as well in real-world radio environments as a lower speed network will. Multi-path interference, doppler frequency changes, and radio noise disrupt high-bandwidth signals more than low. And since phones using TCP connections -- the dominant connection type used in Web browsing -- have to retransmit data that is corrupted by errors, even an error rate only a few percent higher will dramatically slow down Internet experiences.*
    *Phone processors and software don't necessarily keep up with fast data transmission. I noted this phenomenon when I compared my Nokia E61i with the Apple iPhone. Despite the Nokia's 3G and WiFi network capability, the phone actually felt significantly slower than Apple's iPhone on the same networks. Why? Because the Nokia processor/OS/software combination was simply slower at moving bits than the iPhone is. The result: even with a 54 megabit WiFi network -- a network several times faster than the fastest 3G network -- the Internet experience on the Nokia was significantly slower and poorer than that of the iPhone. The phone just couldn't keep up.*
    *High bandwidth networks drain batteries. Power consumption of any chip increases according to the frequency. That means if you want your network to go 10 times faster, the chip inside your phone managing that network consumes 10 times the power that a slower chip would (It's not quite that simple because of different signaling techniques, and in fact there are additional power losses due to frequency that aren't in the standard dynamic power equation, but the overall principle still holds). This is why Steve Jobs has decried the power consumption of 3G networks -- that speedy signaling actually matters in a battery-powered device. So why don't European users see this power-draining effect today with their phones? Well, check out the Nokia message boards and you'll find that they do experience some of the effect, but that effect is diminished by the fact that Europe has a much higher density of cell towers than the US does. And since cell phones decrease their radio power output when signal strength is high, the frequency effect of 3G transmission is partially offset by the fact they can use lower power amplifier settings for their radios.*
    *The bottom line: Carriers, analysts, and consumers alike have an unhealthy obsession with bandwidth to the exclusion of other important factors that affect the user experience with a phone. Just as the computer industry finally figured out that more gigahertz wasn't necessarily better for users, the phone industry is going to discover the same point (and for the same reasons). And companies that use limited bandwidth in smarter ways to deliver a better user experience -- like Apple -- are going to have a leg up on their competitors no matter what network they use. Let's hope it doesn't take phone carriers as long as it took the computer industry to figure out they need to sell something other than technology to win over the average consumer.*
    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Hi Pete,
    Sure, comparing phones is a good thing to do when making a purchase decision.
    However, many of these articles (including this one) are trying to validate the lack of 3G on the iPhone. The article starts with this question and tries to prove it doesn't:
    But the question left unasked has been, "Does 3G really improve the user experience?"
    Well, of course it does. If nothing else, not having incoming calls go to voicemail while you're surfing the web or YouTube, certainly improves the experience. And only having to wait a fraction of the time for a webpage. Obviously you'll get more use out of it, just as you get more use out of a EDGE iPhone than one that only could do GPRS.
    Again, all the same criticisms were used against EDGE when it came out... battery, cpu can't keep up, you name it. All true, but just as meaningless in the end.
    Regards.

  • How can I get true 5.1 surround sound from my iMac?

    I am looking to buy a logitech z506 5.1 speaker system but it only take 6 channel input, I know my iMac doesnt support that out of the box. I am looking for a solution that I can do to so I can get true 5.1 surround sound. Please help
    Thanks,

    You really need to specify exactly what imac you have.  Current ones I believe have an optical (out) and in and I think that can be combined with usb to produce multi-channel sound.  But it's just an academic exercise if you don't have the optical.
    Also, google "5.1 audio on imac" for lots of hits on this topic.

    WAV as originally developed does not support embedded artwork. It is also very limited even for simple text based meta-data. AIFF also as originally developed (by Apple) did not support embedded artwork but Apple have added the ability to do this and this works in iTunes for Mac and Windows. Some other applications can also read such embedded artwork in AIFF files but not WMP.
    If your looking for a lossess file format to use that supports embedded artwork for iTunes, then I suggest using Apple Lossless which uses the MP4 file format and MPEG4 meta-tags, these are the same as used by AAC.
    It is possible to use Apple Lossless files in WMP and Windows Media Center, but not alas to read the embedded artwork in WMP. I use embedded artwork in Apple Lossless for iTunes and iPod and iPhone, and then use a folder.jpg for WMP.
    Note: I have all my music in Apple Lossless playing fine in WMP.

    i just dont get it....screw anamorphic, i want true widescreen capabilities....i videotape with the FX1, a true 16X9 camcorder and i want to edit that 16X9 and export to a 16X9 quicktime video file....can final cut express do that or not?

    869X420? I'm curious as to where you're getting that number from. I'm unfamiliar with that resolution.
    DV does have true 16:9 mode. Even the original version of FCE supports it. Both 4:3 and 16:9 aspects use 720x480 resolution, just shown in different aspects. DV does not display in square pixels, unlike most computer graphics or compressed QuickTime videos.
    Anamorphic is 16:9. For DV, they're the same thing. FCE supports it. FCE HD supports it in higher resolutions. (Now, when you get into film, you can have anamorphic film & lenses that are not necessarily in 16x9 aspect... but that's beside the point.)

    Absolutely True. I've had a 32GB SD card in my phone for a couple months now. I've had my Droid X with Andriod 2.3.4 (4.5.621) for about 2 years and I'm an app, music and photo fiend. The extra storage is a definite plus. The Droid X has been a good phone for me.
    Keep in mind upgrading your SD card to 32GB will not address the issues you have outlined above. Try checking for a system update to make sure you have the latest and greatest OS. Go to SETTINGS/ABOUT PHONE/SYSTEM UPDATES
    Another tweak you can try is finding a free/inexpensive task killer. (I use SuperBox Pro) The issues you outline above are most likely releated to processes that are running in the background. Too many processes running at one time overloads the processor, which slows performance.

  • Can't get "true" height of text box (text object) in Photoshop CS4-CS6 on Mac

    I'm seeing this behavior in CS4, CS5 and CS6 on the Mac using AppleScript. When I get the height of a text object layer as such:
         tell app "Adobe Photoshop CS4"
              tell current document
                   set textObjectHeight to height of text object of art layer 1
              end tell
         end tell
    The value returned doesn't match the height of the text object. In my mind the text object is the box that's displayed when I click on text in a text layer with the text tool active. The value for the width appears to match, just as I'd expect.
    I'm trying to get the height and width of the text box (text object) so that I can draw a box "underneath" it on another layer so that one can tell where the text box is. Kind of an FPO-type assistant. I'm currently using the position values and the height and width to create a colored box. I realized that the height isn't exactly right.
    Any help would be great appreciated. I've not explored the use of Javascript thus far, but am open to that as a solution.
    Thanks,
    Stephan
