Can iTunes handle Greek correctly?

I recently received a directory of a bunch of old (1920s, 302) Greek recordings, which of course were all labelled in proper Greek. The directory list displays fine inside a Terminal window on my Macbook Pro. So I told iTunes to load the directory. The titles, text, etc. came out all mojibake, with Latin1 gibberish instead of the correct Greek that Terminal displays.
I did a few searches of the iTunes discussions, and found a few suggestions to delete the Greek fonts and reinstall them; some people said they worked while others said they didn't work at all. I haven't yet discovered how to do this, but I may try it. Meanwhile, I looked all through iTunes' menus and preferences, for anything dealing with charsets. Most Mac apps now seem to have a View -> Text Encoding or something similar that lets you tell an app what charset to use, but iTunes doesn't seem to have anything like this.
I'd think the mostly likely cause of the problem is that my iTunes has been told to use a Latin1 (ISO 8859-1) encoding, and changing this to UTF-8 would probably fix the problem, as it does with most other apps. Does anyone know how to do this? Or is iTunes just stuck back in the pre-Unicode days and unable to handle simple everyday Greek?
A funny part of this is that I have a few Chinese songs in iTunes, with Chinese titles in pinyin and Chinese characters, and they seem to display just fine. So how do I learn why Chinese works but Greek doesn't? I'd think Greek would be easier than Chinese.
