Can iTunes stream movies?

The couple times I've tried renting videos from iTunes, it goes into download mode which depending on the movie can be up to 2 hours, then you have another 1-2 hrs to watch. I just don't have that kind of time to wait around especially when you can stream elsewhere immediately upon purchase.
Am I doing something wrong or is this the way Apple/iTunes works for now. Download only? No Streaming?

Gee Varjak, I didn't realize you were in charge of what is "germane" here or not. Did I break any rules by asking a question and stating my thoughts on how I feel about streaming?
And if you are not interested in discussing the topics here, might I suggest you not reply? I'm posting to try to help move things forward. You seem more in tune with promoting a restrictive negative forum regardless of your 134k points.
I make good use of the Feedback links, thank you very much. And unlike you, I feel this is an EXCELLENT forum to present to iTunes users, movie buyers and renters using competitors to Apple so that they have a place to comment and also send Feedback to Apple as a means of bringing more income to Apple.
I really think Varjak, with all due respect, you've over reached telling us how and where we should post. These are "our" collective forums. Not yours and I did not break any rules. I love Apple passionately and simply feel streaming would serve the cloud community, mobile community and potentially bring in more income for Apple. That's certainly not a bad platform or point of view in my book.
Unless you have a positive comment about advancing obtaining film content in the fastest best quality way via the Internet, may I suggest you not hijack this thread to discuss how you feel threads should be worded or used especially since no rules have been broken here and you have turned this thread into a criticism of me instead of staying on point about content delivery. Please excercise some restraint and refrain. Thank you.

  • Can iTunes stream movie audio via airport?

Is there a way to do that? A bit disappointing when a video (even when purchased in iTunes store) is not being streamed to the airport.
    Thanks,
    andreas

    iTunes will not, mainly for synchronisation issue between audio and video. but Airfoil will allow it to you. it can virtually take the audio output of any software out to your AirTune and it works pretty well;

Can I stream movies from web sites and have iPad off?

Not unless they are iTunes store purchases or in other apps on AppleTV such as Netflix.

Can u stream movies from netflix on the iphone 5 on to a tv without a cord?

Unfortunatly with movies in the iCloud it physically gets downloaded to your device. I am thinking some of the reasons for this is because of possible changes in bandwidth speed on 3G or 4G networks well as coverage for those networks. Nothing would be worse when watching a movie that I am streaming I the car and I loose cellular coverage. The good news is with it downloading when you are done watching it, delete it and download another one.

  • Can i stream movies to apple tv directly

Can you stream movies from the time capsule directly to the apple tv?

No the TC is not a media player or server. The Apple TV if you have a Gen 1 or Gen 2 can play files... but you will need to jail break it... ie load 3rd party firmware. ATV 3 has so far resisted all attempts to hack.

  • Can not stream movies from netflix

I have an MacBook Air and I can not stream movies from Netflix.  I have downloaded Silverlight and unloaded it and reloaded it but still can not stream movies. What is up

What exactly happens when you try to view a movie?  And how exactly are you "unloading" Silverlight?

  • I can't stream movies on my iPad that I have purchased on iTunes.

When I try to stream movies from my iTunes account on my iPad it brings up loading screen for a few seconds then just closes out. No error message or anything at all. I can't play any movies from the app at all

Honestly I'm not sure what it's called...:/ on my phone when I open the video app it shows movies that I have purchased on iTunes but aren't downloaded to my phone. I can play them without downloading. But I can't on my iPad. I signed out and tried to sign back in and now I can't even see the videos I've bought when I open the app. Only the ones that are downloaded onto my iPad.

  • Why can't itunes stream movie audio over airplay?

This is more a suggestion to Apple engineers rather than a request for assistance but any comments in support (or otherwise) are welcome.
So, it goes like this, I use my iMac as my TV, entertainment centre, etc at home and I stream audio from there to an Airport Express hooked up to my stereo. Using Airplay in iTunes and third party apps like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil this works for just about anything: my music library, live TV through EyeTV and non DRM movies...but I like to download rental movies from iTunes and for some reason I can't stream audio from iTunes movies. I understand that this is a documented limitation of iTunes and Airplay, and there can be some issues with audio and video getting out of sync due to the buffering, but if Airfoil can do it, why not iTunes? The Airfoil video player is pretty basic, but it compensates for the buffering delay without any problems, and I can even use VLC to manually add a delay into the video track.
Would it be possible to include this as part of a future iTunes update? I mean, I'd much rather rent movies legitimately through iTunes than resort to other more nefarious means to be able to enjoy watching movies on my Mac. What's more, I have this pathological antipathy toward hooking things up with cables, so Airplay is the perfect solution for me and loads of other people as well, I'm sure.
So come on Apple, show you really do care about Airplay and let iTunes stream the movie audio so that I can enjoy my entertainment in High Fidelity.
    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Well, here's some good news!
Looks like a feature of Mountain lion that didn't make the front page solves my problem. To get movie audio over Airplay, on OSX 10.8 go to Audio and MIDI Setup app, make sure you have the Audio Setup window open (Window - Show Audio Window) and if your Airport or other Airplay device is online it should appear in the list of audio IO devices on the left hand side.
Right click on the Airplay icon and select "Use this Device For Sound Output" and away you go. iTunes (10.7 at least) seems to be smart enough to realise that it is playing audio to a streaming device and buffers the video accordingly. Viola! Glorious hifi sound sans wires.

  • How can i stream movies from my pc to apple tv

I would like to stream HULU movies that are on my PC to Apple TV. How can that be done?

Only compatible video files from itunes can be streamed from a computer.
If these are downloaded and unprotected files rather than streaming in a browser you may be able to convert them and add to iTunes.

  • Can't stream movies to Apple TV on an external hard drive!

    Hi!
Is there anyone who has successfully streamed an
linked/referenze movie on an external drive to Apple-TV?
I can play the movie (from an external drive) in iTunes but can't see the movie in Apple TV!?
    thx

yes, there's nothing like that in the Windows world.
I think QT Pro for windows might do that
Can you save multiple reference files? Sort of like an editing history?
I suppose you could do that with them
I'm guessing this guy will need to somehow commit the changes to the movie to get this to work then.
Actually I believe Mr Lee has posted about this before and I think I told him I don't think this will work over the tv, he may only be looking for a second opinion.

  • Can I stream movies to my Samsung Smart TV?

    Hi!
I recently purchased a Samsung Smart 3D TV, which connects to the internet and stuff.
Will there be a way for it to connect to the time capsule and stream files from it? Will I need to change the Capsule to a file server?

You cannot stream from a TC.. unless the Samsung TV can read raw file formats for movies.. most smart TV require DLNA server in the File Server.. ie they cannot directly stream from raw file.. TC has no .. repeat.. NO media ability whatsoever.. it is a dumb hard disk in router.
A WD liveTV can stream movie files from a TC to a TV. All the brains of course are in the WD live.
An Apple TV cannot.. it is a streamer linked to itunes.
Buy a WD live.. cheap and easy to use.
Or buy a proper NAS with DLNA.

  • Can you stream movies from time machine to apple tv

Can you stream purchased movies from Apple Time Machine to Apple TV?
I have both an Apple TV and an Apple Time Machine. Both great devices BUT my internet connection is not great and apparently, the telephone exchange needs to be upgraded in order for it to improve and right now, the phone company has no plans to upgrade the exchange . So, I've bought movies from Apple TV and have downloaded them (using Apple TV) and watched them. They seem to stay on Apple TV for a few days before they need to be downloaded again if I (actually my kids) want to watch the movie again. Problem is, it takes about 15 hours to download a regular movie due to the poor internet connection. My kids don't have that much patience. I know I can download a movie onto my Mac and stream it from there to Apple TV but that means I have to have the Mac available. Since I work at an office and take my MacBook to use at work, it isn't always there for the kids to get their daily Frozen hit. See the issue I face? Apple TV and Apple Tme Machine are great devices. Can they be used in conjunction with one another?
So, what I was wondering, is it possible to stream from Apple Time Machine to Apple TV, i.e. use Time Machine to store your movies for Apple TV?
    Thanks
    Philip

    No.
    Time Machine is an application.
Time Capsule is hardware (what you have).
As suggested, you download them to iTunes and they will work fine on the AppleTV.

Yes but you need a computer running iTunes.

  • How can I stream movies from amazon

I am trying to stream movies from Amazon Prime with HDMI cable and continue to get message that says: AirPlay mirroring and HDMI output are not currently available. To AirPlay video to an Apple TV, first disable mirroring: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access control center to find AirPlay options.

Sorry, got distracted and posted prematurely.
This appears to be an ongoing issue with amazon and netflix.
    Can not find an answer.
Maybe someone else knows how to solve.

  • Can i stream movies from my mifi to firestick?

I just got a Amazon Fire stick for Christmas and would like to know if I can stream movies to the Fire stick from my MYFI 4620L

The Amazon Fire Stick sounds like its a streaming media player.  As long as it has WiFi connectivity then it can connect to a Jetpack within range and access the internet however you like.
It should work, however as Ann noted you need to be very careful when consuming your data plan.  VZW has very few restrictions in place to protect you from going overboard on data consumption.  Keep a close eye on your plan and figure out quickly what you can and cannot get away with.  I suggest watching content on low quality until you are comfortable with everything.
