Can iWeb publish to NOT .Mac?

Hi All -
I'm not a .Mac subscriber. I don't really have a need for it, but I like the look of iWeb. I'd like to use it to publish some stuff, especially blogs and podcasts, but to my own website.
Can it be done, or is this strcitly as .Mac tool?
-Tom

Thomas,
After poking around some of the other messgae boards, and the requirements for iWeb, it does appear that this app can be used without .Mac. I am sure some of the features will be hindered without the inclusion of .Mac but I do believe it will work.
For example, I use iPhoto for my pictures, and I export them to a seperate directory to be included on a web site. iPhoto does have an "Export to Web" feature which creates the thumbnails, and the HTML, etc.. to display the photo album on a web page. It doesn't look as nice as .Mac, but it does work. And once it's exported, it can be modified manually, if your level of expertise allows for that.
I am fairly confident that most of the features, including themes will work outside of .Mac. If not, I'm sure there will be 3rd party developers with plugins available shortly.
Good Luck!
Mike

  • Can't publish to dot mac

I'm travelling right now - and trying to publish my travelogue on dot mac. It worked well for a couple of weeks, but since I've been in Egypt - I have been having nothing but trouble.
I usually get a message saying that "Publishing failed due to a network error. Check your internet connection and try again." I have an internet connection - and I'm not sure what else to do. Any thoughts?
Also - one other question - how much data (ie. photos and movies) can I put onto my website? And - what's the best size for my photos to be (I always shoot them in the highest res possible, but I'm guessing that's way too big for a website)
    Thanks for the help!

Let me respond backwards. Yes you absolutely do NOT want high resolution. However, unless you're doing something unusual, iWeb will automatically protect you. In case you're wondering, just think about a mere 3 or 4 meg file size for a hi-res photo. That's a full 10 million BYTES (or, more importantly, 100 million BITS) for a measly three pictures! Now think of common bit per second download speeds. A 56K dial modem typically downloads at 30,000 bits/second, standard DSL is 768,000, premium DSL is 1,400,000 and the vaunted cable is still only 3,000,000 BITS per second. You do the math.
My hunch regarding the network error is the quality of the connection. Internet data transmission is subject to errors and those errors are corrected by a mechanism called ARQ (Automatic ReQuest for retransmission). If the errors are substantial, the quantity of retransmissions will destroy the ability to get meaningful data through and the system gives up. Brief messages (such as required for web browsing) are not impacted but lengthy file transfers (such as website updates) become essentially impossible.

  • Can iWeb publish with JPEGS rather than PNG?

Is there any way to make iWeb use only jpegs rather than PNG files when publishing? Also, I think a picture quality slider would be helpfull for compression and site size management... thanks

You can minimize the chances of iWeb converting your jpgs into PNGs if you pay attention to the following things...
    1. Scale your jpgs to the resolution they are to be used...don't let iWeb do the scaling if possible (like dropping a photo in and then adjusting the size handles). Target your resolution and then drop the photo in and select "Use Original Size" in the Inspector Shape tab.
    2. Do not apply effects to your jpgs....if you do, iWeb will automatically convert to PNG and the file size will be even bigger! These effects include drop shadows, rotation, frames, opacity changes, etc.
    3. Be aware that in some templates, dropping a photo into iWeb automatically applies frames, drop shadows, and/or reflections. You can deselect these enhancements in the Inspector panel after dropping the photos in. If you don't, iWeb will convert to PNG.
    4. Do not use the "Use image as background" option. Better to drag an exactly sized jpg photo into iWeb and push it to the very back layer than to use this option.
You are right, iWeb or at least iPhoto needs to have some sort of user control over jpg compression. I use another app for this purpose called "Downsize". On the plus side, it also lets me apply shadows and frames to photos and saves the finished image with effects and all as a jpg.

  • Delete old Iweb published site not saved

Hi Team, My compter crashed and I have a published website, but I dont have a backup of the files that created it. I have heard you cant download all of it and I have to start again. How do I delete it and start again??????? I have read how to get the bits and pieces back but I don't want it to count against my total iweb allowance.

First, you could look at this page for help in retrieving stuff......
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWebBackupretrieve.html
If you rebuild the site with the same name and publish it to MobileMe, you will overwrite the original or you can go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites and delete the website folder and the index.html file.

  • IWeb published "page not found"

I've created a site in iWeb 2, published to a folder on my desktop & uploaded it to A Small Orange's web servers using Cyberduck. But when I try to view the site with either Safari or Firefox, I get the dreaded "404 page not found" message.
Tech support at A Small Orange is not especially helpful & said "The problem is that your index.html redirects to a file welcome.php in the RobertsFine_ArtPrints folder. the welcome.php files does not exist."
I asked what can be done about this & they said "If the files were generated by IWeb then you need to ask them why your files are not setup properly.
Im sorry but there is no way that we can give you code that we do not have. This issue lays with your your site is coded."
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Robert

I replied only to Ethmoid's response not to the entire thread, as I should have. My bad.
Here's my reply to your replies:
I uploaded the folder Robert Wells Fine Prints, which contained both the index.html file and the Robert Wells Fine Prints folder created by iWeb when I published. In Cyberduck, I uploaded them to the public_html on Small Oranges servers.
I uploaded the whole RWFP folder created by iWeb all at one time.
Ethmoid asked: "How did you manage to get a php file when iWeb does not support this? If you have created your site in iWeb, you welcome page should be Welcome.html and nothing like php."
I have no idea how I did this, but it looks like I screwed it up pretty good. Could it have anything to do with the fact that at some point in this process (not sure when) I changed the site's name. Originally, I was going to call it Robert's Fine Art Prints, but that got changed to Robert Wells Fine Prints. Though I have no idea if this has anything to do with my current problem.
Things have gotten worse. Thinking I did something wrong & could fix the problem by re-uploading, I deleted the files from the server and tried again. Now, most of the image files are failing to upload in Cyberduck.
Chuck Usher asked "When you publish to a folder I believe you get a folder and a separate index.html file. did you up load both and address the index file? What is the site address? "
Yes, you get an index.html and a folder of supporting documents. I uploaded both at the same time. The address is supposed to be robertwellsfineprints.com but it doesn't work.
    Thoughts appreciated.

  • Can i upload to iWeb from to different macs

A couple of weeks ago I bought me an MacBook, i have a iMac too.
When I uploaded some pictures from the MacBook I found to my suprise
(bad suprise) that the only fotos left on my web were the ones from the MacBook, fixed it later.
So I wonder, is there any way that i can work my web pages from the 2 Macs?
    Greetings from the Canary Islands.

Yes. See this Apple document: iWeb: Publish to your .Mac account from more than one computer.

  • DO NOT UPDATE TO iWEB 2.0.3 - I did and I can;t publish anymore!

Ah, crap. I should have know never to download a new iWeb update before its been out for a few days. Ever since upgrading to 2.0.3 I get the dreaded "An unknown publishing error has occured."
Once again, Apple f's up iWeb.
    What a joke.

Hmm. I'm having the same problem. Have tried deleting tffs and pngs just in case it is an old problem recurring (or at least older posts regarding this "unknown publishing error" suggest the images are the culprits). This didn't fix my publishing problem.
Your fix suggests that the "publish to .Mac" function is (1) different from the "publish all to .Mac," since one works and the other doesn't, and (2) that the "publish to a folder" function is certainly NOT the same as the "publish to .Mac" and (probably?) the same as the "publish all to .Mac". My worry is that if I delete the site folder and then can't publish to it after all, then I might be stuck with no site instead of a dated site. I suppose that simply dragging the site folder from .Mac space to my desktop (and then dragging it back should the fix fail) might work; but, there's no guarantee.
Has anyone tried a "publish to folder" save after employing this work-around?
    Thanks.

  • IWeb Publishing error: "Can't connect to .mac account"

I have been able to publish fine until three days ago. I wait for my movies to be created then get a dreaded " Cannot connect to .mac account. Check internet connection. Try again later. I can log in to access my idisk, get e-mail, and generally do everything else. Why suddenly can't I publish? I'm using OS 10.4.10 and ilife'08. Thanks

I WAS a happy iWeb camper until two days ago. When I tried to add a page to my site today, it told me I was out of space, and to change my configuration, dump some files, or purchase additional storage. I dumped some pages that broke my heart to get rid of, published my iWeb to a file, then did a "get info" check - I'm only using 4.4 GB of space, I reset my mail to 30 MB, and it still tells me I'm out of space. The last time when I published the whole site I got the message that it could not connect to .mac account, to check my internet connection and try again. I'm just totally aggravated over this now. I spent a lot of time on the pages I got rid of for no apparent good reason, and still can't publish my new page. After all the aggravation when I installed Leopard on the 24" aluminum iMac, I thought I'd have smooth sailing now that they resolved the freezing problem. As Waylon Jennings said in his song, WRONG! Sure hope someone comes up with a fix for this one. Thanks, Deb

  • I am using Microsoft office 2011 for mac, publisher is not included, meanwhile I have publisher files saved from windows, is there any recommended software I can install on the mac so that I can open the files?

How can I be able to use my Windows publisher files on my Mac computer, since Microsoft office 2011 for Mac doesn't have Publisher? What's most recommended software to use for this purpose?

Just an FYI here Allan, and clinton.
Version 4.0 or newer of Libre Office can open and edit Publisher files, this is fairly new, you may not have noticed it yet,
I tested it last week for another OP, it works very well, so finally there is a Mac application that can replace Publisher.
Here's a link to the post.

  • Help! iWeb can't publish to .Mac & folder, keeps hanging.

Hi guys, would appreciate your help here. I'm new to to using iWeb. Just purchased and installed iWeb a couple of days ago. I've designed my webpages using iWeb and uploaded into www.mac.com, just the basic Welcome, About Me and Blog pages.
But after that 1st successful attempt, my iWeb can't synchronise with iDisk & .Mac properly and it froze in the middle of the publishing process. I was forced to force quit iWeb. Subsequent attempts to publish using the Publish button and Publishing to Folders alternatives yielded the same results - connection error, hanging of iWeb and fruitless synching of webpages to iDisk & .Mac. So ended up can't proceed or update my already published webpages.
After that I registered another .Mac account and tried publishing directly, publishing to folder, synchronising etc... but still no luck as iWeb either hanged, gave error box stating "check internet connection or totally didn't synch the files at all to Homepage though the process went thru.
I also discovered that after restarting my powerbook, there are folders in the trash with names such as com.apple.iWeb584_1862039531. Does that render iWeb unfunctionable.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Powerbook PPC G4 1.33Ghz 15" Mac OS X (10.4.8) 768MB DDR SDRAM, 80GB HDD

My site is very small. The capacity taken up indicated by iDisk after synching is only 1MB. Bandwidth tests indicated an estimated 4700kbps download speed and 300kbps upload speed. Currently, I'm subscribed to a 10Mbps ADSL broadband plan and connected wireless to the router *** modem.
The present configuration for the internet settings include a web proxy (HTTP) as given by my ISP. I've read somewhere in this forum that proxies may filter or block non-standard html codes generated from/by iWeb.
I've tried to bypass that proxy by connecting via ethernet cable to the router and unchecking the proxy setting. But another error occurred stating 'configuration error' by iWeb.
So does the problem lie with the proxy settings or with iWeb itself?
PS: I can't get my ISP to turn off the proxy, and the only way to take away that proxy is to terminate the internet subscription.

  • The publishing settings page does not open when I click on the domain name and the iWeb application will not stay on the dock.

    Hello,
I have been trying to help a friend who is having problems publishing her website. (She has done so previously using Mobile me)
There seem to be a couple of things wrong with the application,
1     if I drag the application icon onto the dock, it won't stay there
2     I wanted to change where her site is published to (she has bought a domain name and has a hosting service now) but when I click on the domain name I do not get the "site publishing settings page" so we can't enter the new details.  All that comes up is the main page of her website.
I would suggest uninstalling and re-installing Iweb, to see if that clears the problem, but as Iweb came pre-installed with her Imac, I am not sure that we can do this.
    Any ideas please?
she's using and imac 24 in (approx 4 years old) and running osx 10.5.8

NO - not correct.  Even if you are still using iWeb 08, you can still publish to another host and not MobileMe.  You do this by selecting the option 'Publish to a local folder" and this will publish the site to your desktop and you can then use an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your host.
MobileMe will not be here after the end of June, so you will have to find alternative hosting.  They are not taking any new subscriptions.
On new Macs, iLife 11 is pre-installed, but only iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are included, not iWeb and iDVD. The Apple Online store is not selling the boxed version of iLife 11 any longer, so if you want to upgrade to iLife, then you'll have to look online at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11.  Both contains iWeb 09, which is what you would want.

  • Can't create a file, Can't Publish to iWeb

When I try to publish some changes to my site, I get a Publish Error that says: Can’t create the file “droppedImage.png.” The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges.
My iDisk doesn't seem otherwise to be damaged and it is less than half full.
Has anyone seen this and can help me with it?
    Thanks

Copy your domain.sites2 file to the desktop from the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Control-click on it and select Show Package contents from the contextual menu. Search that package for the droppedImage.png file and copy it to the desktop. Open it with Preview. Do a Save as, select PNG and save as a new file - droppedImage2.png.
Rename that file back to droppedImage.png and move it back into the domain.sites2 package replacing the original png file.
Rename the original domain.sites2 file to domain-original.sites2 and move the edited package from the desktop into the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Open iWeb and publish to a folder to test. If it publishes OK to a folder publish to your .Mac account. If it doesn't go as hoped you still have the original domain file to fall back on.

  • Can't publish to .mac OR my ftp site... can someone help?

Hi all... I tried my best to glean answers from existing posts, but alas could not, so I am posting my blurb in hopes that someone can just point me in the right direction. Problem: Since upgrading to iWeb '09, I can't publish to either my .mac space or my other server (bluehost) without getting errors. On the .mac side, the upgrade caused my entire site to go "red" (meaning it needs to be re-published, I assume). When I hit the "publish" button, away it goes through the page creation process, then begins uploading the site (I assume). An hour or more later it comes up with this message:
"An error occurred while publishing the file "/private/var/folders/SP/SpSOe.../ TemporaryItems/com.aple.iWeb_62.... (etc.)... /mysite/evo/Archive/files/rptilev6-1.jpg". Try publishing again later.
    ++
When I try publishing (different website) to an FTP folder -- the reason I upgraded to iWeb '09, and this was going to be BIG for me -- hitting the "test" button results in a "you're good to go" message (or whatever it says). All seems well. And when I hit the Publish button, the pages are promptly created and it begins uploading the site. After 10-15 minutes though, it stops, and I get a simple message saying "There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider." The console.log reveals this message appearing just before the aforementioned "error" message: "Operation could not be completed. Could not connect to server "blahblah.com."
My normal FTP client (Fetch) reveals that a bunch of the files and folders have been successfully uploaded, but only a few. I am then able to use Fetch to upload the entire site with no problem.
Any ideas? A clue or two would be appreciated. Will I be able to use iWeb '09 to upload ANYTHING from here on out? Many thanks in advance!

We should start a club. I upgraded from 08 to 09 twelve days ago, on both my MacBook Pro and my brand new iMac. All my iWeb files immediately went red on both machines and stayed that way - and several pages of my website disappeared. All attempts to upload to MobileMe failed, whether I tried to upload the full site or just the changes. Sometimes I got (and still get) a Publish Error message, sometimes a 'Couldn't connect with MobileMe'. I've followed all suggestions on this discussion board and have been on the phone to Apple chat lines, who also offered suggestions that didn't solve my problem. Last week I spend fair portions of three days on the phone to AppleCare in Ireland. Very helpful, very nice, and after much experimentation, including dragging my site to different files on my iDisk, we managed to make my site live again. But the files on my desktop remained red and I still couldn't upload changes. AppleCare were going to continue to try and come up with a solution, but I haven't heard from them for a week now, and they're no longer answering my emails. Perhaps the person I was talking to is away at the moment, I don't know. What I do know is that I'm no nearer finding a solution.
Today another Apple adviser suggested removing Logic from my Applications folder because Logic 08 can conflict with GarageBand 09 apparently, and reloading iWeb (for the fourth time). I did this. No change. But it might work for one or two of you.
The point is, if none of these solutions work for us, what can we do? I really like iWeb and am a big Apple fan until something like this happens. And it shouldn't happen, to any of us, especially if we have the most up-to-date software and equipment.

  • IWeb published old photo names... will not update

I am having a problem with the photo pages. When I first built a photo page I used images whose file names were too long. When iWeb published the files the names became corrupted and would not display.
I can't get iWeb to forget the original file names...
I have re-named, deleted, re-imported, changes the file size, and made all the changes I can think of to get the photos to be seen as new images. No luck.
Every time iWeb publishes the site it uses the "historic" names for the files.
Any ideas? I'm about to delete the entire site and start over... but I would rather not do it that way. Who knows, that might not even work!
    Thanks!
    PPC Powerbook 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I've also had that problem - real headache
    Here's a fix (in princple) :
Within iWeb delete the photos you don't want from the page.
    Save "command-s"
    Quit iWeb
Before re-opening iWeb go and check the 'Domain' 'package' - this is where iWeb stocks the ressources and assets for you as 'user' :
    user/library/application support/iWeb/Domain
Click right to show hidden package contents (I use French Tiger so don't know if that's the right command name but you get what I mean).
Here you'll see all the files/images etc you have used in any of your sites/pages.
In principal when you save in iWeb the Domain gets updated and should throw out any images you deleted from your iWeb page - so those 'old' files should no longer exist.
I think what you may have been doing is deleting images from the page and NOT SAVING that change. In principal Publishing to a folder or .Mac constitues a 'save' but I'm not convinced that the two have the same effect on the Domain.
I actually binned directly from the Domain once but I've read elsewhere that tampering there might cause probs.
Hope that gives you some insight.
