  • Spell checking in different languages in Mail

    Dear all,
I face the following problem when using Mail. I have many friends who speak many tongues and I'd like to be able to e-mail them back in their languages. So, how do I set the typing language in Mail so that spell check checks the text correctly for me?
The usual scenario is that I need to type in Italian when I normally use English (UK). Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the response. That's exactly what I was looking for.
    Thanks a million,
    Dave

Perhaps you can find an Arabic dictionary for OpenOffice.  That may also work with OS X.

    Hello FiGu
    Welcome to the discussions.
This is a very frequently asked question, it's worth doing a search on these discussions before posting. You might get your answer more quickly.
Anyway the language used for spell checking any particular paragraph is controlled by the Language setting for it. You can adjust this in the More section of the Text Inspector.
If you start a new document based upon one of the built-in templates, this language setting will default to the one that you have top of your list in the Language section of International System Preferences.
The language of a paragraph in Pages is associated with the paragraph style. You might find it helpful to create a couple of templates with the language settings adjusted appropriately.
I've never tried but you might be able to do this quickly by setting the system language, opening Pages so that it is working in say Spanish, open up some of the pre-defined templates and saving them as your own template. This may retain the language setting.
Just in case you didn't know, when you change the language preferences and restart Pages, the menus will change to the language at the top of the list and the content of the built-in templates changes. This is provided the language at the top of the list is supported by Pages, if not it will go down the preferences until it finds one it does support.
Also, again in case you didn't know, you can change the input language regardless of the mode your application is in. This makes it quicker to type accented characters. This is controlled by the Input Menu portion of International System Preferences. It's best to get the icon shown in your menu bar so that you can toggle between input languages easily.
    I hope that helps

  • Can pages spell check in Spanish?

My daughter is doing a paper for her Spanish class, and would like to spell check the document, Does Pages have the capability to spell check in languages other than English?
Thanks for any and all helpful info.

Aha, so that's the reason you're going after me.  You've decided that what I posted today has zero to do with a poster who posted years ago, so I need to have my hand slapped.
Can I point out that the title of this thread is "can pages spell check in Spanish?"  The title didn't limit the question to one particular version.
Do you not realize that for everyone who writes a post about their problem there are many other people who simply search the archives to get their problem addressed? Instead of posting a brand new question they search the archives and solve their own problems without ever being detected.  The lurkers as they are often called.
Take me for example, I was searching this very issue today, came across this very post, and the solution you offered back in January of 2012 didn't work for me. So, I poked around in Pages until I found the current solution to my current version of Pages. And, I added it to the discussion for the sake of others like me who might find the January 2012 solution not workable for them either. So, they wouldn't have to poke around and work it out for themselves.
I hope this is not how you treat everyone who contributes to the knowledge base.  Try to be a little patient if you will with the ones of us who don't hang around here day in and day out. While we may not know your rules for the sandbox, we're just trying to be helpful. No need to come after us with your guns blazing.

  • Enabling spell check for another language (Portuguese)

I am trying to figure out how to spell check in another language. Specifically European Portuguese. Is this a browser issue or can it be resolved within the system of my laptop?
    Thanks

First you need to install the dictionary, available from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3155/
The dictionary will then be available for you, for more details see [[using the spell checker]].

  • Spell check pages other languages

How can I change the spell check in the PAGES app in my IPAD?
My IPAD is in english and I write in english and portuguese.
    Thanks.

Spell check is supposed to follow the keyboard, but Pages has a bug and follows the OS user interface language instead.

  • Using spell check with two languages

Microsoft Word allows me to spell check either of two languages automatically. After a few words in a particular language it knows which language I am using and checks the spelling. Can I do the same in Pages, or do I have to reset the language for each document?

I am spell checking several documents that are mostly english but contain a handful of German words as well. I would like Word to check both English and German spelling; however, this doesn't seem to happen automatically like you indicated in your post. A possible reason for this is that not enough German words appear in the text for the computer to pick up on the second language. Do you or does anyone else have a suggestion? I tried creating a custom dictionary with German words that seem to appear regularly in each of these documents. Although, the German word "Volk" appears many times, which I added to the Custom Dictionary, but it is still treated as a misspelled word when I check.
    I appreciate any responses.

  • Spell checking in other languages using Pages for iPad

Does anybody know how to spell check a document in a language other than the primary language? For example the iPad is using English but I want to write a letter in German.
This was simple to do using Pages on the Mac. So far I'm stumped.

Did you actually try this with Pages?  In the past this app had a bug where switching the keyboard did not work, you had to switch the OS language, as was stated earlier in this discussion.  If that is now fixed, that is good to hear.

  • How can I Spell Check with an Action?

    Hi -
I can use the Spell Checking command while I'm recording a new Action but when I play that
Action it gets stuck on the first step... "Spell Check in contents of all text layer".  I didn't write that first step - PShop did while I was recording the Action.  Whe I try to use the Action I get an alert ... "The object "in contents of all text layer" is not currently available."
If I hit Stop - the Action stops.
If I hit Continue - the Action stops.
So how do I Spell check using an Action?  I plan to use this in a batch process. I have about 300 files and automating this would be great.
    TIA any insight,
    JL

  • Why Can't Spell Checker Correct "dont"?

It appears as if the built in spell checker does not offer common contractions as suggestions for mispelled words. Type "dont" into a new TextEdit document and then Ctrl+Click for spelling options and it gives you everything but the most likely "don't". Typing "cantt" does not suggest "can't", but "woldnt" suggests "wouldn't". I don't get it.

You will only get out what is put into the data base.

  • How can a spell checker be so bad?

I did not have high expectations for the spell checker built into RoboHELP, but in ac
tual use, this "tool" is next to useless. Examples of words it flags as misspelled: Microsoft
(it wants Micro soft), toolbar (it wants tool bar), hyperlink (it wants hyper link), and the list goes on an one, with each new example seeming more absurd than the last. Why bother including a spell checker if what you're going to offer the user is garbage, pure and simple?

How would you deal with “There are some one of which is....”. Admittedly this is a bad example and there should be a comma between "some" and "one" but if this is left out, your spell checker would change it to "someone" which is incorrect. Anyway the point I am trying to make is that producing a generic spell checker that meets everyone's needs is a task I'll never want to undertake. I'm really not trying to defend RoboHelp's spell checker, just try to make you see that it is not as easy as it first looks

  • Can a constraint check two different tables for the existence of a parent item?

My database has a table Message, and a table MessageReply.
Each MessageReply has a ParentID and a MessageReplyType (Message, or Reply).
When the MessageReplyType is a message, I would like to ensure the MessageReply.ParentID (MessageID) exists in the Message table.
And when the MessageReplyType is a reply, I need to ensure the MessageReply.ParentID (MessageID) exists in the MessageReply table.
I am doing this through client code, but I would like the database to enforce this to protect the database from well intentioned programmers like me.
    Can it be done?
    Thank you

There is a problem with your function and the whole idea of using a check constraint and a function to simulate a foreign key constraint is problematic.
The problem with your function is when you do a statement like
    Set @ReturnValue = (Select MessageID From MessageReply Where MessageID = @ParentID);
then if that row does not exist in MessageReply, @ReturnValue is set to NULL.  Then you are returning that NULL from the function and using the check constraint to test whether or not that returned NULL is > 0.  Comparing NULL to a value does
not give you TRUE and it does not give you FALSE, instead you get a logical value called UNKNOWN.  Check constraints only reject a row if the resulting value is FALSE.  It allows the Insert or Update if the logical value is either TRUE or UNKNOWN.
So even if the parent row does not exist, that check constraint will allow the new row to be inserted.
Second, using a function and check constraint to simulate a foreign key constraint always has a problem.  If you go with that (and you have written the function and constraint correctly) and you attempt to insert a row with a bad ParentID so that the
ParentID does not exist in the appropriate table, you will get a check constraint error and the insert will be rejected.  That is good.  However, suppose you successfully insert a row in MessageReply. For example you insert a row in Message with
MessageID = 1 and then insert a row in MessageReply with ParentID = 1 and ReplyType = 1.  That will work fine as it should.  But now suppose someone deletes the row in Message with MessageID = 1.  That delete won't fire the check constraint.
So it will allow the delete of the row in Message and now you have a row in MessageReply which doesn't have a parent.
If you want a method that will work completely, you could do that by 1) doing all of your updates to those tables thought stored procedure(s) that check the data to be sure it is valid before inserting/updating/deleting, or 2) writing trigger(s) on both
Message and MessageReply to make sure that any changes are valid, or 3) add computed columns to the MessageReply table so that you can write foreign key constraints.
I would go with method 3.  That would look something like changing your MessageReply table to look something like
Create Table Message(MessageID int Primary Key
    -- other columns as needed
Create Table MessageReply(MessageID int Primary Key
    ,ParentID int Not Null
,MessageReplyType int Not Null Check (MessageReplyType In (1,2))
,ParentMessageID As Case When MessageReplyType = 1 Then ParentID Else Null End Persisted
,ParentMessageReplyID As Case When MessageReplyType = 2 Then ParentID Else Null End Persisted
    -- other columns as needed
    Alter Table MessageReply
    add constraint chk_MessageParentExists Foreign Key(ParentMessageID) References Message;
    Alter Table MessageReply
    add constraint chk_MessageReplyParentExists Foreign Key(ParentMessageReplyID) References MessageReply;
