Enabling large page support on AIX may help performance under some circumstances (typically with large datastores). TimesTen does support use of large pages on AIX and no special action is needed on the TimesTen side to utilise large pages. Here is some information on this which should eventually appear in the TimesTen documentation.
The TimesTen shared memory segment for AIX has been created with the flags
( SHM_PIN | SHM_LGPAGE) necessary for large page support for many releases.
It used to be the case that special kernel flags needed to be enabled so it
was never documented as being supported. Subsequent AIX releases have made
enabling large pages a matter of system administration.
1) Enable capabilities (chuser)
2) Configure page pool (vmo -r)
3) Enable memory pining (vmo -p)
4) [restart timesten daemons]
The documentation is quoted below.
AIX maintains separate 4 KB and 16 MB physical memory pools. You can
specify the amount of physical memory in the 16 MB memory pool using the vmo
command. Starting with AIX 5.3, the large page pool is dynamic, so the amount
of physical memory that you specify takes effect immediately and does not
require a system reboot. The remaining physical memory backs the 4 KB virtual
pages.
AIX treats large pages as pinned memory. AIX does not provide paging
support for large pages. The data of an application that is backed by large
pages remains in physical memory until the application completes. A security
access control mechanism prevents unauthorized applications from using large
pages or large page physical memory. The security access control mechanism
also prevents unauthorized users from using large pages for their
applications. For non-root user ids, you must enable the CAP_BYPASS_RAC_VMM
capability with the chuser command in order to use large pages. The following
example demonstrates how to grant the CAP_BYPASS_RAC_VMM capability as the
superuser:
# chuser capabilities=CAP_BYPASS_RAC_VMM,CAP_PROPAGATE <user id>
The system default is to not have any memory allocated to the large page
physical memory pool. You can use the vmo command to configure the size of
the large page physical memory pool. The following example allocates 4 GB to
the large page physical memory pool:
# vmo -r -o lgpg_regions=64 -o lgpg_size=16777216
To use large pages for shared memory, you must enable the SHM_PIN shmget()
system call with the following command, which persists across system reboots:
# vmo -p -o v_pinshm=1
To see how many large pages are in use on your system, use the vmstat -l
command as in the following example:
# vmstat -l

From the above example, you can see that there are 16 active large pages, alp, and

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utility is: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior for defragmentation of older drives, disk repair, disk scans, formatting, partitioning, disk copy, and benchmarking.

Periodic Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) See Mac OS X- About background maintenance tasks. If you are running Leopard or later these tasks are run automatically, so there is no need to use any third-party software to force running these tasks.
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced after Tiger. (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
Defragmentation
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. But you don't need to buy third-party software. All you need is a spare external hard drive and Carbon Copy Cloner.
Cheap and Easy Defragmentation
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive. You will use Carbon Copy Cloner to create the backup and to restore it.
1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the
external one.
2. Boot from the external hard drive.
3. Erase the internal hard drive.
4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not depressed or is ghosted.
5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the upward pointing arrow button.
After startup do the following:
Erase internal hard drive
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the
drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is
failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be
reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the
DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the
drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait
until the process has completed.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.

3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.

As for malware protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. Starting with Lion Apple has included built-in malware protection that is automatically updated as necessary.

For general anti-virus protection I recommend only using ClamXav, but it is not necessary if you are keeping your computer's operating system software up to date. You should avoid any other third-party software advertised as providing anti-malware/virus protection. They are not required and could cause the performance of your computer to drop.
Cache Clearing
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0.9, Maintenance 1.6.8, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache files can cause slowness, kernel panics, and other issues. Although this is not a frequent nor a recurring problem, when it does happen there are tools such as those above to fix the problem.
If you are using Snow Leopard or earlier, then for emergency cleaning install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (AppleJack works with Snow Leopard or earlier.)
Installing System Updates or Upgrades
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Backup and Restore
Having a backup and restore strategy is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your computer. Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

3. SuperDuper!
4. Synk Pro
5. Tri-Backup

Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space. Avoid installing utilities that rely on Haxies, SIMBL, or that alter the OS appearance, add features you will rarely if ever need, etc. The more extras you install the greater the probability of having problems. If you install software be sure you know how to uninstall it. Avoid installing multiple new software at the same time. Install one at a time and use it for a while to be sure it's compatible.

How can I best improve the performance of my Mac Book Pro?
I have a 1st generation MBP running OS X Tiger (that's right, 10.4.11) and it is really showing it's age, mostly when I'm switching back and forth between multiple programs and when I'm browsing online. It will get tremendously slow (sometimes I'll have to wait 30 seconds to 1 minute just to be able to click a link). I'm wondering, will upgrading my operating system (and adding more RAM) substantially prolong the life of my MBP or do I need to do some more drastic upgrade?
Actually the best thing you can do is wipe the drive, that is after you save all your important files, and reinstal the OS and programs.
Get a Fresh start. this will imporve the performance of the computer back to as it was when it was new. All computer get bogged down overtime with unneeded files, caches and updates. When you start fresh all those old files will be gone and the updates you do will be the newest.
Yes a faster hard drive will help but still a fresh install is the way to go. Especially with the new faster HDD. -

I have written an java application. This app makes a large number of calls on a method getting a value from an array. Profling the app reveals that it spends more than 90% of the time in this call. Improve the performance of the 'BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE' Bapi

We have a requirement in which we create a material document number for each goods receipt note.
This is done with the help of 'BAPI_GOODSMVT_CREATE' . This BAPI is working perfectly fine and is correctly posting the material document number for each of the goods receipt.
The problem lies in the fact that this BAPI is geting called for each line item of the Purchase order ie it gets called in a loop , due to which this program is taking much longer time to run.
Is there any way or any sap notes which we can use to improve the performance of this BAPI .

Why do you call the bapi for each line item. All the line items per document should be processed together.
The standard code is mostly fine. The performance of these standard transactions generally deteriorates if good programming practices are not used in the user exits/badis available in the standard transaction. Check where is the pain point to figure out where the transaction takes more time.

It is taking 5 hours for loading where as the same extractor in different source system ( different client ) is doing this load with in an hour.

Are you sure that both source systems has same amount of data?
And also make sure that Master data was uploaded from both systems. It takes more time to upload transaction data if the master data is not yet uploaded from same source system.
And also check SM58 in Source systme for any blocking TRFCs.If there are any with text in red colour , then manually update them.Huge number of blocked TRFCs may slow down the upload.

As part of the CRM Upgrade requirement, we are planning to use Account Life cycle functionality to reflect the status of an account.
As per the SAP recommendations( Note 1113330) we are currently executing the program CRM_BUPA_USERSTATUS_CONV2ROLE to convert user status master data to BP roles. We have noticed that this program is taking more time even when we run this for single business partner. We are trying to explore the options on how to improve the performance of the job. Incase if anyone have done this kind of exercise in any of their previous assignments or have information on this, request to provide your feedback on the below points.
1) Total Volume of Customer Master Data
2) How many records did we consider for one execution of the conversion program
3) How much time did it toke for one execution ?Did we do any performance tuning
4) When we are running the program in back ground mode..we are not getting the spool
showing the log information. Was there any custom report developed to view the log when
we execute the program in background mode..if so can you share us the technical details
6) Any information on how many work processors that were available for executing the jobs

How to use large pages in AIX with oracle

i'm trying to convince oracle to use large pages on AIX 5.3 but haven't
suceeded so far.
i set v_pinshm=1, maxpin%=80, lgpg_regions=448 and lgpg_size=16777216
using 'vmo' and 'LOCK_SGA=true' in spfile. after rebooting and starting
the instance 'svmon' shows no no large pages in use:

Swapping performance, and large pages
I am trying to run glpsol (the standalone solver from the GNU Linear Programming Kit) on a very large model. I don't have enough physical memory to fit the entire model, so I configured a lot of swap. glpsol, unfortunately, uses more memory to parse and preprocess the model than it does to actually run the core solver, so my approximately 2-3GB model requires 11GB of memory to get started. (However, much of this acess is sequential.)
What I am encountering is that my new machine, running Solaris 10 (11/06) on a dual-core Athlon (64-bit, naturally) with 2GB or memory, is starting up much, much more slowly than my old desktop machine, running Linux (2.6.3) on a single-core Athlon 64 with 1GB of memory. Both machines are using identical SATA drives for swap, though with different motherboard controllers. The Linux machine gets started in about three hours, while Solaris takes 9 hours or more.
So, here's what I've found out so far, and tried.
On Solaris, swapping takes place 1 page (4KB) at a time. You can see from this example iostat output that I'm getting about 6-7ms latency from the disk but that each of the reads is just 4KB. (629KB/s / 157 read/s = 4KB/read )

I didn't find anything I could tune in the Solaris kernel that would increase the granularity at which pages are swapped to disk.
I did find that Solaris supports large pages (2MB on x64, verified with "pagesize -a"), so I modified glpsol to use larger chunks (16MB) for its custom allocator and used memalign to allocate these chunks at 2MB boundaries. Then I rebooted the system and ran glpsol with
ppgsz -o heap=2MB glpsol ...I verified with pmap -s that 2MB pages were being used, but only a very few of them.

I think my next step, if I don't receive any advice, is to try to preallocate the entire region of memory which stores (most of) the model as a single allocation. But I'd appreciate any insight as to how to get better performance, without a complete rewrite of the GLPK library.
1. When using large pages, is the entire 2MB page swapped out at once? Or is the 'large page' only used for mapping in the TLB? The documentation I read on swap/paging and on large pages didn't really explain the interaction. (I wrote a dtrace script which logs which pages get swapped into glpsol but I haven't tried using it to see if any 2MB pages are swapped in yet.)
2. If so, how can I increase the amount of memory that is mapped using large pages? Is there a command I can run that will tell me how many large pages are available? (Could I boot the kernel in a mode which uses 2MB pages only, and no 4KB pages?)
3. Is there anything I should do to increase the performance of swap? Can I give a hint to the kernel that it should assume sequential access? (Would "madvise" help in this case? The disk appears to be 100% active so I don't think adding more requests for 4KB pages is the answer--- I want to do more efficient disk access by loading bigger chunks of data.)I suggest posting this to the opensolaris performance discussion group. Also it would be useful to know if the application is 32 bit or 64 binary.

Can anyone tell me , How can i make use of Global Temporary Tables to improve the Performance.
I have few sample scripts ,
Say i have the View based on some Complex query like ,

Now i have created the Global temp Table as ,
CREATE GLOBAL TEMPORARY TABLE Profile_values_temp

Profile_option_value VARCHAR2(20) NOT NULL,
Level_code VARCHAR2(10) ,

) ON COMMIT PRESERVE ROWS ORGANIZATION INDEX;
Now I am Inserting the Records into Temp table as
INSERT INTO Profile_values_temp
(Profile_option_name, Profile_option_id, Profile_option_value,
Level_code, Level_id)
SELECT Profile_option_name, Profile_option_id, Profile_option_value,
Level_code, Level_id
FROM Profile_values_view;
COMMIT;
Now what my doubt is, when do i need to execute the Insert Statement.
Say , if the View returns few millions of records , then loading such a data into Global Temporary table takes lot of time.
Then what is the use of Global Temporary tables and how can i improve the Performance using the same.

There are 2 to 3 complex views in our database, and there always be more than 5000+ users will be workinf on the application and is OLTP application. Those complex views are killing the application performance.
I what i felt was, if i create the Global Temporary tables for thow views and will be able to load the one third million of records returned by the views in to cache and can improve the application performance.
I have created the Global Temporary tables for 2 views with the option On Commit Preserve , But after am inserting the records into the Temp table and when i Issue the commit statement, the Temp table is getting Cleared.
I really got surpised of this behaviour as i know that with the Option On Commit Preserve , the rows should retain in the Temp Table, Instead , it's getting cleared.
Pelase suggest , what to do ??
