Can leopard be installed on my powerbook G4 500mhz computer?

can leopard be installed on my powerbook G4 500mhz computer?

Note: Leopard lacks access to the Classic environment.  Though Mac OS 9 booting is still possible. If your desire is to access a modern iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you also don't have built-in USB 2 support.  A PCMCIA USB 2 card is likely to be underpowered for said devices unless they have their own wall powered adapter.  iTunes 9.2.1 which is 10.4.11 compatible, is able to access older iPhones and iPods as is indicated here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history
And Boot Camp is only available to Macs that are new from 2006 and more recent. Consider those facts before attempting to upgrade said machine to 10.5. Apple made USB 2 available with the September 2003 Powerbooks and newer models.

  • I Can No Longer Install Palm Desktop on a Reformatted Computer!

Since I reformatted my computer and patched it all the way back up, I can no longer install the Palm Desktop Software.  I put the disc in and it hangs at the installation dialogue box and slows my entire computer down.  So I pull up the task manager and my CPU is spiked at 100%, and iDriver.exe is the process hogging the CPU while eating hundreds of megs of memory.  Not only that but there are multiple instances of iDriver.exe right behind it with one instance of iDriverT.exe.  Also there are multiple msiexec.exe instances as well.  Once I kill the first instance of iDriver.exe the Palm Desktop installation stops.  I even downloaded the latest verizon version from this site and I'm having the same problem.
    Any solutions?

Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines

When running into installation issues, it is always recommended that you use the latest InstallShield installation engines. This article contains steps on how to download and install the latest InstallShield engines for the installation version you are trying to install.
    What to do?
    Follow the Troubleshooting steps below:
Determine if the installation is compressed or uncompressed.
Launch Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows key + E or select Start > Run and type explorer.
Browse to the location of the installation files. For example, if the installation is on a CD, browse to the CD-ROM drive.
Search for the installation file. The typical names for installation files are setup.exe, update.exe, installer.exe, etc.
If the installation file is the only file in the directory (a single installation file), continue with the remaining suggestions in Step 1. Otherwise, if there are other files in the same directory as the installation file, continue to Step 2.
When a single installation file is run, it uncompresses the installation files into a temporary location (usually the Temp directory). Use these steps to find the installation in the temporary location:
Start the single installation file, but do not continue or cancel the installation dialogs.
Browse to the Temp directory. For further information on how to find the Temp directory, see Clean the Temp Directory.
Search for the installation file. The typical names for installation files are setup.exe, update.exe, installer.exe, etc. The uncompressed installation file should contain other files in the same directory. Continue with step 2.
Right-click on the installation file that you are trying to install and select Properties.
In the Properties dialog, click on the Version tab.
Look at the File Version field to determine the version number of the InstallShield engine you need. Follow the instructions for your version. If you started the installation in Step 1d, cancel it.
If the file version number is 2.0x or less:
Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine from the machine.
    Download IkernelUpdate.exe.
Once downloaded, double-click it. This installs the InstallShield engine for your installation.

  • Why can't I install Photoshop Elements 8 on my computer?

I currently have Windows 7 - I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 at Best Buy over a week ago and still can't install the software.  I've contacted Adobe Support more than once.  My experience has been HORRIBLE.
    1.     I went online and verified that my system meets all of the requirements for this program.
    2.     I went through every single trouble shooting item I could find.  This has taken me approximately 2 days.
    3.     I called Adobe Support and spoke with someone who couldn't understand what I was saying and kept telling me that he could not help me because i bought this through a 3rd party online service - no, I didn't... I bought this from Best Buy!  I had to repeat this more than 4x before he finally understood what I was saying.
    4.     He suggested I download the trial version from the Adobe website.  (I'm thinking, why would I do this when I paid $100 for the actual software?)  But I tried it anyway.
    5.     Since I've downloaded the trial version, it's been working OK - but now I'm trying to enter my serial number before my trial ends and it's pulling up as an invalid serial number!
    6.     I go back to Best Buy to return this so I can just purchase the program online - they will not take it back and says I have to go through Adobe... (sigh)... here we go again.
    7.     I call Adobe again, spoke with someone else who was having a difficult time understanding me.  I explained everything above - he told me I have to uninstall my trial version and install the program with the software... THIS DOES NOT WORK!  (Which is what I told him in the beginning of the call)
Does anyone have any input on how I can attempt to install this on my computer, or am I really out $100 on my very first Adobe product?  I'm beginning to lose faith in this very troublesome experience... =(  I would love to speak with someone who can understand what I am asking and what kind of help I am looking for.  I just need to be able to install the software with a valid serial number, or instructions to just return this product all together.
    Please help!

    Hi Rosera,
This is bad and I am sorry to hear that you are running into these issues.
Let me connect with you, so right now, the current state is that you have installed copy of PSE 8 in trial on your windows 7 machine, and when you are trying to enter the serial number from your PSE 8 Box, it is saying the serial number to be invalid?
It might sound pretty obvious, but please make sure that you are entering the serial number correctly and of PSE 8(in case you bought a PEPE box)?
Have you tried the steps mentioned below by Barbara?
If possible, you can send me the serial number through PRIVATE MESSAGE and I can check it on my end that whether the serial number is indeed invalid or that the issue is with your machine?

  • Can Leopard be installed from a Firewire Drive or Another Mac?

I have a Mac Mini with a faulty Super Drive. It's not really a problem since I only use it as a network appliance and rarely install software via CD/DVD. But now I don't know know how to upgrade it to Leopard. And since its my File server, I can't use it with Time Machine.
Is it possible to put the install on one of my Firewire Drives and install it from there?
    Any advice?

    Dear Cabak
You may have options, but I am not sure as I have only two days with Leopard thus far, but....
I am positive with Tiger it was possible to start the client computer up in Target Disk Mode and use the host computer to "upgrade", "archive and upgrade", or "clean install" the operating system.
You will actually start the HOST computer up with the install disc AFTER you have the client computer in TDM. You simply choose the client computer hard drive and select the type of install you prefer to do.
Remember to check the client computer for any offending files that will cause you to get caught in a blue screen freeze on startup. There are plenty of threads in the discussions about people having this problem. Read the following document if you are not aware of the situation.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
The beautiful thing about this (if there were one) is that you can remove these files easily while in Target Disc Mode. These are the files you should get rid of before the upgrade process...
    /Library/Preference Panes/Application Enhancer.prefpane
    /Library/Frameworks/Application Enhancer.framework
    /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Application Enhancer.bundle
    /Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.ape.plist
I think you will be pleased with the outcome of your efforts.

  • Can Leopard by installed on a remote drive?

I have talked to Apple and found that the Dazzle unit I want to use, only has leopard drivers. I use Snow Leopard on my new MacBook Pro. In order to use this unit they sugges tthat I use a remote drive to use the Dazzle. My question is, do I need a new partition on my current drive to make this happen or can it be stored on the remote drive?
    Thank for any help.
    maicoman

    Hi maicoman,
It depends... how new (or old) is your machine? Apple designs their machines around a driver set that is specific to a certain build OS X, because of that you won't be able to go back to a previous version of OS X than what was originally shipped on your machine.
An example: If your machine arrived running OS X 10.6.4 and you tried to reinstall OS X with a retail disc of Snow Leopard that was 10.6.2 then you'd most likely have significant performance issues or worse, an immediate kernel panic on startup.
If your machine shipped with Snow Leopard it will not be able to run Leopard. But if it shipped with Leopard and you upgraded to Snow Leopard then you'd be able to run Leopard, again following the same rule of versions.
You can install Leopard onto a second partition on your internal HD or onto an external HD.

  • Why can't I install airport express utility onto my computer

I need to install the airport utility from the disc onto my compter. When I tried to install the utility it would not allow me to install it, because the software on the computer was not supported. Any suggestions on how to get the utility from the airport express disc that was bought during snow leopard to be installed on a computer running lion.

It is true that the 6.x versions of the AirPort Utililty do NOT support administration of the 802.11g AirPorts, but I am not aware that version 5.6 cannot be installed on OS X Lion 10.7.4 as I have it installed already. However, I installed it back when I was still running 10.7.3.
Unfortunately, I do not have another Mac running 10.7.4 without 5.6 to verify that it cannot be installed.

  • Can I re-install Compressor 4 on a second computer? If so, how?

I recently bought Compressor 4 through the app store onto my MacBook Pro where I am learning FCP X. I now wish to install it on my MacPro. How do I do that? Thanks. [email protected]

You can install it on both computers with one purchase. Make sure both computers have the same (Mac) App Store account before you down load Compressor. Once you pay for it and download to the first computer you can download it on the other computer. The second computer will have an install button for Compressor.

  • How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer?

How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer? Will the leopard dvd run out of installations and not let you install anymore?

    Hi colman Prez;
Now that the funny comments have been made, I have a serious question and that why are you worry about reinstalling Leopard with an Erase & Install which is what I take that you mean when you say clean install. In actually fact there is no such thing in OS X as a clean install.
I am curious because in all the years I have used OS X, I have yet to do an Erase & Install yet.
I know with Windows that they suggest reformatting and reinstalling at the drop of a hat but that isn't true with OS X.

  • Snow leopard can't be installed on my machine.

Alright, here goes. Thank you in advance.
    BACK STORY:
I have an Intel iMac. I've had it for a few years and it's always been awesome. I was running Leopard, and it was all gravy. So much so, that I even took it in to my Apple store to see if there was anything I needed to do to protect my machine, or if there were any updates for my machine that I should purchase. Dude at genius bar said yea, there is an iLife update and a new version of OS, Snow Leopard. He told me he would update my macbook (which was getting a new hard drive put in) for me and show me how to do it, so that when I got home with my iMac, I could do the same update to it. iLife 11 and Snow Leopard installed perfectly on my Macbook (my secondary computer). I tried to installed Snow Leopard verbatim what the Apple associate showed me, with his written directions. Popped in my disc, selected English, install began, got about 1/3 of the way through the progress bar and an error message came up reading "Snow Leopard can't be installed on this machine". Interesting. Apple store guy said I was good to go?
    DIAGNOSIS FROM APPLE STORE:
I took my iMac back to the apple store the next day, with my macbook incase I needed to run a firewire from iMac to Macbook to transfer files. Dude tried to save some of my data but couldn't access it. He told me there was a OS conflict and he was unable to archive and install. He gave me a card with all the information for a data recovery service and told me I was SOL. Great. I took my mac in to make sure it was good to update, he said yes, and then I did it, in turn frying my main computer into a useless paperweight.
    FUNCTIONALITY:
When I try to turn on my iMac now, it goes to a grey screen with an apple and a spinning gear. This screen stays up for about 45 seconds and then the computer shuts off. I've connected a firewire to the iMac and my Macbook and held the T key down in an effort to save my photos and music etc. The firewire symbol comes up on the iMac, but nothing appears in my finder on my Macbook like an external hard drive would. If I put the Snow Leopard disc in, and hold the T key, the Snow Leopard disc will show up in my Macbook's finder/desktop. If I put the Snow Leopard disc in the iMac and boot it up the computer just shuts down, even if I hold the C key. If I boot with the Leopard disc and hold C, the disc will mount and I can re-install Leopard, but I get a warning that all of my data will be erased in doing so. Obviously I don't want to part with 200+ GB of data. My last back up was about a month before all this so it won't be the end of the world but there are photos and other things that are recent to my hard drive with no back up and that I'd rather not lose if I don't have to.
    BASIC INFORMATION:
I'm 24 with a bachelors degree and I am very comfortable with my mac. AKA you don't have to reply like you're teaching your grandma how to email.
My iMac IS an Intel iMac.
I have 47 GB of free space on it, plenty of room for an OS update.
Firewire ports are FW400 on both computers.
I had to archive and install Leopard once about a year ago on my iMac. Not sure why there was issue, but the problem was fixed when I did this.
So, do I have any options here besides erasing my hard drive? Has anyone ran into this before. Sorry for the rant. Thank you again.

Attach an external hard drive to the iMac. Boot from the Snow Leopard disc again, launch Disk Utility, go into the Restore tab, select the internal drive as the source, select the external drive as the destination, and restore. Then partition -- do not merely erase -- the internal drive, and see whether you can install onto it. If you can, use Migration Assistant to restore your data from the backup.
Not backing up = inevitable data loss.
