Can leopard server setup mail to work in a closed LAN environment with no domain name?

I just need to get emails from tape libraries, xserve RAID etc. Can't quite figure out the Domain Name and Host Name settings in Server admin.

I haven't done extensive testing of Yahoo, but every test I tried worked.
When forwarding mail you do have to make sure that the original mailbox actually exists though. To prevent spam, Yahoo actually checks the from addresses to make sure they really exist.
Some people just set a "forwarder" from a non-existent email address in their domain (that is possible with Hostgator for example). Yahoo will not let those be received. There has to be an actual existing original mailbox.

  • Leopard Server's Mail Server Storage Format

I'm hoping to get some help with a migration project to Mac OS X 10.5 Server's mail server from another mail server. One of the main tasks is going to be migrating our archived mail from the old system to the Server's mail server. To do this I need to know what format Apple has chosen to store messages in with its mail server. As far as I can tell the messages are stored as individual files at /var/spool/imap/<username>/<folder> but I can't find any documentation about the format itself.
According to the docs it looks like Cyrus does this storage under the hood, has Apple changed any of this to suit the configuration Leopard Server or does it work just like Cyrus? There are also a bunch of databases kicking around which handle what appear to be some basic fast lookup information. However I don't think I'm going to need to create these since they appear to be repairable so once the files are present it should just be a case of repairing the databases and starting the server. I hope!
If any Apple Mail Server ninjas know more than I do I'd really appreciate some advice from someone who's gone before.
    Thanks

I forgot to check my cables. Apparently they have used crossed-cable for the previous Mac Pro to switch connection. After connecting the server to our AirPort Extreme things got a little sticky, using a straight cable did the trick.

  • TS4424 I still can't get my mail to work.I have reinstalled Security update and combo 3 times. About ready to call Apple but mI don't think I should pay for it!!!!

I can't my Apple mail to work.  It started when I did an up date.  When I went to use mail  (the little stamp at bottom)  it said, "you can't use this version of mail with this version of OS X.  I looked on support and was told to solve the problem  by downloading combo package and security update. Did it 3 times.  I did everything.  Still doesn't work.  I even took everything mail out of applications and the library and did those two updates and still can't get it.  Could I reinstall OS X Snow Leopard and would that affect any of my documents like i photo or i tunes?  I don't want to loose anything!  I have spent way too long on this problem.  I feel like I own  PC with windows again.  Please help!!!!!!    Frustated

No need to reinstall Snow. Try trashing all the Mail.apps you have. (But don't empty the trash yet!) Do a search for those. Reinstall Mail from the DVD in Optional Installs. This will put Mail 4.2 in Applications, then run the Combo Update, which will update Mail to 4.5, and then the Security Update again, in that order.

Try to reset your ipad and/or force quit the mail app
    Reset
Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. No data will be lost.
    Force close an app
Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.

    HI,
If you have Free sites with creative cloud, then these sites do not allow you to host your email with BC. You can either upgrade your website to higher site plan, or chose one of the alternative email host, given in the following link

  • Can Leopard Server be repaired?

Leopard Server 10.5.5 (now 10.5.6 in an attempt to fix the issue but it failed)
    Quad Core Mac Pro
    7 users
    No foreign start up items
Mac started being very slow. Restarted and now when you logon (at the server) it can take 15-20 mins of beach ball to get a desktop. During this time the server is unusable to the connected clients and the mail stops working.
Using interface (at the server) works OK for a while but then the Finder will stall again.
Server Admin reports there is no server to administrator?
Can this be repaired without restoring from back up?

    Hi
Assuming no hardware problems what you've described could be down to a network problem? Check the network settings. Starting in Safe Boot should allow this to happen without the accompanying beach ball. Check patch cables. Make sure IPv6 is switched off. Does the server have a fixed IP address? Has the setting been changed to DHCP?
Generally Server Admin reporting it can't find itself is usually down to a problem with DNS. As you know Leopard requires a working DNS Service. Check this thoroughly. Can the server resolve itself to itself?
You don't explain the issue you were attempting to fix? If a Mail Server what restore method did you use? I'm assuming the server is configured as Advanced?

  • Help - Snow Leopard Server Setup with AEBS

    Hi.
I am trying to setup two things at once. Good start, eh ;0)
Step-by-step, this is what I have:
    Internet connection
    Static IP address
    Apple Airport Extreme Base Station
    Mac Mini Server (Snow Leopard)
Registered Domain name with access to control panel for the name
This is what I want to do:
Connect the AEBS to the Internet
Connect the Server to the Internet via AEBS
Connect Client computers (all Mac, iPhone & iPad) to the server network and the internet locally
Connect Client computers (all Mac, iPhone & iPad) to the server network and the internet remotely
This is the information that I have been given by my ISP (I have added letters before the address to help you to help me identify where they should be entered):
Router IP: (a)192.xxx.94.x (maps to (b)195.xxx.xx.xx)
    Subnet Mask: (c)255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: (d)192.xxx.94.x
    DNS 1: (e)192.xxx.50.xx1
    DNS 2: (f)192.xxx.50.xx2
    SMTP: (g)smtp.xx.net
I can't really find any obvious instructions, particularly about pointing my domain name to the router/server. Do I change the name servers/the A records, the A&MX Records on the domain control panel?
If anyone has any experience with setting-up the server with an AEBS, I would be truly grateful for some pointers! e.g. put IP address (a) in box (x)
Ha! if only it were that easy, but any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Easy answer. Paid a local IT company to come and check my settings. Turns out that due to the office that I am in, I am in a 'double NAT' environment. When AEBS was throwing-up NAT errors, I was unsure about continuing.
Al sorted now with a few phone calls to the ISP and 2 hours' work by the IT company. Done. What else can I try and break???

  • Snow Leopard Server incoming Mail

I am trying to set up my mail server with Snow Leopard Server. I am able to send messages out of accounts I've created, but I am not able to receive them. I receive this message:
    Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected]
    Action: failed
    Status: 5.1.1
    Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 5.1.1 <[email protected]> invalid recipient
How do I correctly set up it to receive incoming mail?

It seems there are a few issues at hand and you're not alone. We've been experiencing the same issues on a clean install of SNS and have just turned off the default greylisting (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2130446&tstart=0) to see if that helps.
The mail server seems to be working instantly for all 'normal' email but attachments can be problematic. Testing from my dot me account I can send a 10 MB attachment and it arrives fine within a few minutes but if I send it 3 or 4 times one of them will inevitably fail. The sporadic behaviour is making it vary hard to track down and I'm finding the logs quite hard to decipher.
The other issue (which may well be the same issue) is where an email will arrive late - quite often exactly 60 minutes late - although we have seen this as much as 3 or 4 hours.
There are several threads on the front page relating to this but they've become a bit muddled and it's hard to know on which thread to post questions.
I know none of this specifically answers your questions but the other threads may give you somewhere to start. For now we're just monitoring things without the greylist and if the problems persist we'll have to delve a little deeper.

  • DNS/web-server hosted off-site. How to set up Leopard server for mail?

    Hey Everyone,
Brand new xserve with leopard server 10.5.2. Currently, Our web and DNS server for our domain,"company.com" is co-located off-site with an MX record of "mail.company.com" pointed at the static IP of the office where our mail server is. I want to replace the mail server with the xserve. With that in mind, how do I configure the DNS on the xserve during initial configuration to reflect that? Give it a self-referencing FQDN like server.company.office and see if the mail service can handle the domain hosted elsewhere?
I'm pretty new to servers and would love be able to keep this all in Standard but I'm not afraid to jump into Advanced if need be. I've created a test domain through GoDaddy of "company2.com" with an MX record of "mail.company2.com" pointing at the IP address of the xserve. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Can't get e-mail to work using wireless router . . .

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to help my sister get her e-mail working. She is running a Macbook with 10.5. She is sharing an Internet connection with a PC, via a wireless router (a D-Link unit). The ethernet goes from the modem to the router, where it is hooked into the PC via cable. Her Macbook is accessing the router wirelessly via Airport.
She can surf the net perfectly fine, however, she has no e-mail functions. When she tries to send or receive e-mails, she gets error messages about ports being unable to send or receive info. If she plugs the ethernet cable directly into her laptop (instead of going wireless), e-mail works perfectly fine.
Any ideas where I can look? I played around for a couple of hours but couldn't come up with anything. I have no experience with networking, however, my hunch is that it's some sort of settings problem with the router that are preventing her e-mail from working in this setup. The bizarre thing is that everything was working fine a few days ago and then the e-mail servers went down with her ISP (neither the PC or Mac could get e-mail). When they came back up, the PC was able to run some self-diagnostic software and resolve it's e-mail issues, but the problems with the Macbook persist.
We could simply just hook everything back up to "hard" wires through a switch, but she really wants the wireless functionality.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response orangekay. As it turns out, they took back the router that they had bought and they picked up an AirPort Express station and now everything is working perfectly fine again.
Still not sure what the exact problem was but my sister is happy with how things worked out

  • Snow Leopard Server - Remote Mail Access

    Greetings,
I'm looking to see the best way to support remote users of an OS X server for handling mail/calendar synchronization. Some users will be in environments where they could connect directly, while others would be able to use the standard VPN services in OS X server to connect and synchronize. Others, however, would probably be limited to HTTP/HTTPS access to the server.
I know that the web mail interface would work for this, though Squirrel Mail has never been a favorite of mine, but I'm attempting to support synchronization with their native clients. These would likely be Mail or Outlook, depending on the platform, though possibly Thunderbird would be in play.
When reviewing options, it seems as if installing an SSL VPN software package may be the best bet, even if that's not an OS X standard software component. These would appear to allow connectivity via HTTPS, and I'm wondering if anybody has had positive experiences on OS X Server with these.
Another option is different software all together for mail services, such as Zimbra Professional Edition. It has plugins to support directly synchronizing via HTTPS and thats certainly a good benefit, though it brings it's own infrastructure and doesn't use the OS X server internal capabilities.
Are there other features that I am missing that would provide this type of capability within the standard Snow Leopard Server installation, or other recommended products for supporting this in a heterogeneous environment?
    Thanks!

    Hi
Multi client full bandwidth VPN done directly on a server tends to be pretty wretched stuff. Dedicated VPN boxes are cheap enough if your firewall router does not already have VPN built into it.

  • Can Leopard Server update Tiger clients?

Can anyone tell me if Leopard server can update the OS of Tiger clients? I know Tiger server can't update Leopard clients, but the other way around?

    Hi
Not true. I have a 10.4 OD Master with a managed group using the SUS Service on a 10.5 Server. The 10.5 Server is connected to the 10.4 Directory. DNS Services for both servers are on the 10.4 Server as is the DHCP Service. 10.4 and 10.5 Clients that bind to the 10.4 Server are updated using the 10.5 SUS with no problems at all. The only issue I've seen is 10.5 clients occasionally can't use the 10.5.2 Combo Update on the SUS Server. There is the 'cant expand package properly' error message. At first I thought this was because the latest Intel iMacs were able to update but not Leopard installed PPC models. One solution was to keep a manually downloaded .dmg of the 10.5.2 update on the Server and push it out using ARD or copying it locally and installing it that way. However earlier Intel models - occasionally - are also not updating - pre-dominantly first generation macbooks and macminis but every now and again some of the later Aluminium model iMacs.
This is an intermittent problem though and may be due to the small bandwidth that the SUS server is having to use to access apple's downloads server (1MB). When the SUS was on the 10.4 Server with a higher bandwidth connection (4-5MB) there was never any problems with the downloads but quite a few with the Service stopping itself and having to be restarted using the command line.
The amount downloaded for 10.5 SUS is greater (approx 13-16GB) than 10.4 SUS (approx 10-11GB) - obviously. It took 4-5 days for the 10.5 SUS to make available all the downloaded updates - obviously due to the 1MB connection but also there were problems with accessing the updates server at that time. I think this was because Leopard Server had not long been made available and like a lot others it was in a testing environment where all the services were being tried to see what was worked and what did not.

  • Snow Leopard Server iCal push not working on iMac clients

    Hello,
I have a new installed mac mini snow leopard server and updated osx with all the latest updates.
I am running the iCal server and the Push service and everything seems to run OK.
I have 4 brand new iMac clients which share calendars between the different users, but the iCal Push function doesn't work at all. Even when I change the update method in the iCal client to interval of 1 minute, it doensn't update.
The only way the calendar updates is to choose "Refresh" from the Calendar menu in iCal client.
The push function for the mail clients do work which is strange.
I already tried the following actions:
    1. I have stopped and restarted the Push-service on the server
    2. I have removed the push server settings in the iCal server settings on the server and added them again
    3. I followed the iCal log file to see if an action of a client is immediatly visible on the server = OK
    4. I've updated all the clients to the newest software
    5. I have restarted the server completely
Does anybody have tips or advise to help me looking to find the cause of the iCal Push problems?

  • Can't get BT mail to work

I was moved to BT mail from BT Yahoo Mail about 2 weeks ago. Since then I have been unable to use the BT Mail and have had to rely upon my Hotmail account and Incredimail to send & receive e-mail. When I click on the Email tab I get a page saying that BT Mail is loading and then another page opens with the BT Logo but a blank page underneath the banner. Clicking on any of the buttons does nothing, the blank page remains, My default browser is Mozilla Firefox 32.0 which is  fully up to date, and I have tried using Internet Explorer but get the same result. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have also tried doing a Live chat on the Help page but that disconnects me as soon as i've pressed "Submit", tried phoning as well but have been stuck in queus for so long my arm wore out.
Is it possible to uninstall BT mail & then re-install it ?
