Can Lion be installed in-place using InstallESD burned to a DVD?

Hi everyone,
I bought a MacBook Pro in June and didn't personalize it waiting for Lion to go on sale to install it clean. I have a very slow internet connection, and after almost 2 days, it finished downloading (granted, I bought it the day it came out). I followed instructions on the internet and burned a DVD from the InstallESD.dmg file. I installed clean and life is beautiful.
Now, my wife has an older MacBook White from 2008 (C2D 2.2 GHz / 4 GB RAM) and she didn't want to install Lion at first. Now that 10.7.2 is out and it has iCloud functionality, she wants in on the fun. But I shudder to think I have to spend 2 days downloading the Lion installer again.
Can the DVD I used to install my laptop clean, also be used to install in-place in her laptop, saving myself a 2-day wait? or do I have to download it again and bear the wait?
Thanks in advance.

You can do that, however you will still need to download
the 10.7.2 update in order to use iCloud (818 Meg+ for the
combo update, recommended since it contains all other
updates).
Also, if you value your marriage, get an external hard drive
and clone the wife's current install to it in case something
goes wrong with the install or your wife ends up hating Lion.

  • Can Lion be installed on a 2006 plastic body iMac?

My 2006 iMac has a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, the absolute limit. Can Lion be installed on such a machine, or should I be looking to buy a 2011 iMac? Thanks.

Can it be?  Yes, since your system has a Core 2 Duo it should support Lion.
Will you be happy with the peformance of this system running Lion?  Probably not, unless you use it for only the lightest of tasks.  3 GB is really not enough if you have multiple browser windows/tabs open, run Microsoft Office, do any photo work, watch videos, or perform any of a variety of other memory-hungry tasks.
This system is also five years old.  It is at the end of its service life.  Lots of things could go wrong with it at this point, especially under the heavier load Lion will most likely put on it.
If I were you I would wait until I was ready to buy a new system.

  • Intuit's Quicken won't work with Lion.  Installed and am using Quicken Essentials but it's not as convenient.

Intuit's Quicken won't work with Lion.  Installed and am using Quicken Essentials but it's not as convenient.

this has been an issue with Quicken for a long time! Quicken was initially a Mac only application and then they got greedy! i beta-tested Quicken for Intuit for years and when they announced they were not going to support it any more the screaming was loud but not heard!
Quicken Essentials is a crime! i wasn't even asked to beta-test it; probably because they would have gotten an earful!!! it is not essential; it is stupid.... AND, of course, their online version was a disaster. i use Quickbooks Online for business and it works like a charm; i mean it even downloads ignominious PayPal transactions now!
i am also stupid for not really checking out if it would work with Lion - ALL of my financials are on it. I am going to have to do what @cwiens suggested above and either pull out an old Macbook I have or my well stored original Cube in its original box! thank the fates for the double backup i've always done with Quicken - Time Machine & its own key drive!
btw, this is an old Microsoft trick - not having older versions of apps work on OS updates so they force you to buy the new versions.

  • Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is best to use to burn to dvd for TV?

Since iDvd is no longer supplied with Lion, what is the best product to use to burn to dvd for TV from iMac?  Is there a free solution?

Thank you very much for the link.  I'm in the process of evaluating the trial version of a couple of products other than iDvd.  Since iDvd does not have a trial, I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions.  Once I'm done, I plan on putting up the resluts of what I've found.  Work is very busy this week, so I probably won't get a chance to work on this much until next week.
Anyway, I'm importing movies from my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV20.  I've used iMovie to perform the download from the camcorder (the other products don't support this).  The other products can work directly on the imported .dv files without having to export things from iMovie as a .mov file.  I have not had time to see if there is a quality difference between a burned DVD with .dv clips vs. .mov imported from iMovie.  So my questions regarding iDvd are as follows:
Can iDvd work directly on .dv files, or do you need to import .mov from iMovie?
If iDvd can work with these files directly, is it easy to do things such as clip them and do affects on them?
Is there a quality difference when viewing a burned DVD if .dv files were used vs. imported .mov files?
Since I have later versions of the iLife products than what comes packaged in the iLife that contains iDvd, can you install only iDvd in what is purchased from Amazon?
Thank you very much is you know the answer to any of these questions.

  • Why can't I install an app using my web browser?

Often I am at a computer where I can't install iTunes and I want to install an app on my iPad which is at home.  For my Android devices all I have to do is click a button on a web page to have it installed.  Why can't I do this for my Apple devices?  At the library, or a friends house, etc - I may find out about a cool new app I want to put on my device - why should I have to wait until I can go home to get my device, or go to a computer where I can install iTunes?  Web browsers are available so many more places than iTunes.  This sort of user-unfriendly-ness makes me want to move away from my Apple devices.

    Apple does not allow that.

  • Can Lion be installed on an iMac with a Dual Core processor?

I have an older iMac, model iMac4,1 with an Intel 2.0 GHz Core Duo Processor, 2 GBytes of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  It is currently running Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and works very well.
I've seen conflicting information about the system requirements for upgrading to Lion.  One spec says it must be a Core 2 Duo Processor.   I want to see if I'm asking for trouble to try the upgrade.  System is fully backed up with Time Machine.

Thanks Allan,  for the quick and short answer.  I've been reading other posts (should have done that first) and there are good reasons why it won't work.  Best one is that the Core Duo is a 32 bit processor while the later ones are all 64 bit processors.  Some have actually upgraded to the Core 2 Duo, but have not been successful in installing Lion on the internal drive.
I have a MacBook Pro running Lion and that is good for now.  May try to sell my iMac, although it is a very good computer!

  • Why can I not install Firefox anymore using -ms?

I use to be able to install the downloaded versions of Mozilla Firefox using a simple switch on the command line. The switch was -ms. It worked great through, I think, version 24.0. No versions after that have worked. Is there a reason? It there an "easy" workaround? I've seen stuff that tells you create a config file and add it to the install. Surely there is an easier way? Anybody know something that will work? Appreciate any help with this.

Thank you so much!! This is exactly what I needed and is working.
Appreciate you taking the time to respond. :o)

  • Can you auto install deps when using pacman -U package.tar.gz

I have built a few packages from AUR on one of my systems. I would like to install those packages on other systems. pacman -U package.tar.gz will fail if there are unsatisfied dependencies. I have been using pacman -S --asdep dep1 dep2 ...  to install the dependencies. Then pacman -U completes successfully.
Is there some way to do this with a single command that I am looking over?

Okay great. That will be a nice addition.
I'm 2 days into Arch moving from Gentoo.  Not missing portage at all
Thanks for the quick reply Allan!

  • How can I re-install OS X on a PowerBook when the DVD drive is dead?

I'm trying to reload my operating system on a PowerBook with the disk drive dead.
I've tried starting the the laptop as a target disk and plugging it into my Mac Pro and using the disk drive from the Mac Pro. It loads everything on the PowerBook fine. I can restart the Mac Pro using the PowerBook as the startup drive and it looks good, but when I try and restart the laptop by itself, it can't see the start up drive. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure Apple still has replacement system disc sets for older Macs like a PowerBook available -- various consumer protection laws generally require that manufacturers maintain replacement part stocks for a "reasonable" amount of time but eventually those stocks will run out. Plus, a lot of PowerBooks can barely run Tiger, much less Leopard, making a $129 retail disc a potentially poor investment for a 5 or more year old one.
If the system discs are not available from Apple, if it was my PB I would look for used discs sets, keeping in mind whatever rights I still had for any OS version I still owned. EBay is a possible source for such things but a local Apple user group is probably a better one….

  • Can I un-install IE after installing Firefox?

I run Windows XP with IE 8.0. I got Firefox, and it worked better than IE right from the start. After a few months the Windows slowed to a crawl or locked up, using 100% of CPU and over 1 gb of memory. I got a second gb of memory, and the locking up stopped, but performance is still poor. When I start Firefox and start Task Manager a bunch of Internet Explorer tasks start up using tons of memory and CPU resources. Can I un-install IE and use just Firefox?

As FredMcD says, IE is tied into Windows. It is a good idea to have a second browser, anyway, in case something goes wrong with your Firefox.
A bit of housekeeping will help. Your System Details shown above show related plug-ins -
    TotalRecipeSearch and My Web Search
You would be better off without both of these. Google for information and removal advice.
Your Shockwave Flash is also well out of date.

  • MOVED FROM AOL ON MY PC TO AOL ON MY MAC. I CAN'T FIND MY FAVORITE PLACES

For some reason when I open up my favorite places , none of my favorite place are there, they are all gone. I have them all when I sign on to aol on a pc but when I sign on to aol on my mac my favorite places is not there. Can anyone help?

Use Safari instead. You can import all your favorite places using this wonderful tool from AOL:
    http://download.newaol.com/mac/AOLServiceAssistant.dmg
I used this to help my Dad move from AOL on a PC to a Mac.
I hope this helps...it was a real life saver and an EXCELLENT program.
Now, PLEASE if anyone knows how, my Dad is REALLY struggling with this:
He used to compose an e-mail on Windows AOL and he could "insert a favorite place" right into his e-mail. He used this feature constantly.
Now that I have moved him over to a Mac, he doesn't have that option. Really, when you "insert a favorite place", AOL is just putting a link in the HTML e-mail.
Currently, he has to drag his "favorites" (bookmarks) from Safari into Mac Mail, and this is just killing him.
I have tried to use Leopard's new stationary to accomplish this, but have not yet succeeded.
Does anyone have any idea for him?

  • What programs can I use to burn CD's and DVD's?

just wondering what universal software can i use to burn cd's, dvd's, or both. i used nero on my pc, which i was able to burn both cd's and dvd's. so if there is something similar, that would be good. just figuring out my options as an intel mac owner.

I don't use toast, so I'm not sure what kind of bells and whistles it has. But for DVD burning iDVD is excellent. It includes a bunch of great preset menu options and supports both 4:3 and 16:9 formats.
For CDs, I'm not sure what kind of "extra features" you could have, but iTunes does everything I've ever needed. Why not test it out first and see if you even need Toast?
    Hope that helps,
    Cameron

  • My MacBook Pro came with Lion pre-installed so I can't re-download it from the app store. Is it possible to get the installESD.dmg file and how can I get it if I can't re-download Lion in Apple Store option?

My MacBook Pro came with Lion pre-installed so I can't re-download it from the app store. Is it possible to get the installESD.dmg file and how can I get it if I can't re-download Lion in Apple Store option?

FYI Mac OS X is not designed to be installed on additional Macs, unless you purchased it from the App Store, in which case you can make as many copies as you wish and install it on as many Macs as you own.
From the Recovery Disk Assistant -
    Notes
If the computer shipped with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, the external recovery drive may only be used with the system that created it.
If the system was upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion purchased from the App Store, the external recovery drive can be used with other similarly-upgraded systems.
