Can lion server administer a leopard (10.5) client?

Is it compatible with older client versions or will all the clients need to be on 10.7?
Thanks

I can't do a remote bind either without getting the damned 2100 error, frustrating indeed.
I'm trying to bind a Lion client over the internet to a Lion server.
All Lion computers are at 10.7.3

  • Lion server or Snow Leopard Server?

From a quick check of postings here, my question of whether to use Lion Server or Snow Leopard server on a Mac Mini for a small office, looks to be "stay away from Lion server" Snow Leopard server just works and is easier to support.
Most of these posts are from 2011, has anything changed where someone can say Lion is now a much better server choice now than considering Snow Leopard Server?
It seems that most posters feel Lion server is a real step backwards, is this the case?
    Thanks in advance - Lewis

Which services have been removed or depreicated?
You have to bear in mind that 'removed' or 'deprecated' only really means 'no longer bundled and supported by Apple'. Just because Mac OS X Lion Server doesn't ship with a foobar server that doesn't mean you can't download and install your own foobar server. It just won't be integrated into the Server Admin apps.
For example, Lion Server no longer ships MySQL Server. So download and install your own copy. It's not like the GUI apps gave you any control over the MySQL anyway, other than starting it up and controlling the network ports.
Likewise for print server. Some of the advanced print features such as quotas have been removed from the GUI, but you can implement them yourself.
Likewise with QuickTime Streaming Server, where the functionality is little more than a web service.
What features that have been enhanced?
Lion Server has simplified the setup of a server for small workgroups with simple requirements. If that's you then the whole experience may be enhanced since you're not swamped with a slew of options that you don't understand, or need.
I think a lot of people were also stymied by Snow Leopard Server because they expected the GUI apps to cover all the options, which was never the case.
So my original point stands. There is pretty much nothing you cannot do in Lion Server than you could do in Snow Leopard Server, it's just that it might not be supported by the GUI. Most serious server admins eschew Server Admin.app anyway since even Snow Leopard Server's admin app doesn't cover all the capabilities of some of the services, so you end up driving it via the command line anyway.

  • Can Lion server keep my photos in sync between two macs?

can Lion server keep my photos in sync between two macs?  Where should I keep them, we have Aperture 3 and my wife still likes iphoto '11.  I've already tried plenty of 3rd party solutions with little success.  I simply want my MBP to "mirror" the imac with the exception of iMovie footage.  Is this what the server app can do?  I am bad enough with computers, but even thinking about a server gives me migraines!

  • AEBS setup behaves differently on Lion Server than Snow Leopard

I have a small office setup with a Mac Mini Server running Lion server, a Canon Wifi printer scanner and a Canon USB A3 printer connected to an AEBS which is in turn connected to the buildings network gateway for internet access. We have 3 MacBook Pros (snow leopard) which connect wirelessly and the Mac Mini has an ethernet cable to the AEBS. Fairly simple and we just have 1 manual IP address for the server with the AEBS doing DHCP and NAT.
The issue I have is that if I change the AEBS settings using Airport Utility on a Mac Book Pro (the first time I just changed the DNS numbers to Googles free set and nothing else), I lose internet connectivity. I can get a partial connection if I also set the subnet to 255.0.0.0 (most websites load, but maybe 10% fail). Consistent and repeatable behaviour - every time I change the AEBS settings I lose the internet and the same websites fail to load.
I can get everything working again by using the Mac Mini server to change something on the AEBS, or just restart the AEBS. In which case I can use the recommended subnet mask of 255.255.255.192 and everything works as it should.
So my question is Why?? Does the Server change some background ports, or retain some link to the AEBS which stops it functioning if I use a non-server machine to make a change??
One bit of background: When I first got the Mac Mini Server I let it take control of the AEBS setup - It asked, and I let it, but this activated the 802.1x security and required a login to the server before access to the wifi was granted. A nice feature but the Canon wireless scanner/printer does not support this, so I had to stop this and set the aebs manually, so I could use my scanner again. Is it possible that some link has been retained from this?
I do have a full working setup now that I realise I have to use the server to operate the AEBS, but can anyone help with an explanation? It caused me a few months of partial internet access and lots of wasted time, so would like to know if there is a solution that would allow me to set the AEBS from any Mac on our LAN.
Thanks for taking the time to help!

  • Sharing a Calendar from Mountain Lion server with Snow Leopard users on local network

    Hello.
I have a new Mac Mini Server running Mountain Lion Server and I want to create a shared calender for a mix of Lion, Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard users on our local network. Does anyone have any info on how to do this? I have tried using the Server App and Calender Help within the applications, but the content isn't available. I have managed to create a Shared Calender  from the Mini's Calendar App where I've  added users and I can see a 'wireless' transmit icon to the right of the Calendar name - but I cant get any of the users' iCal or Calendar apps to recognise the Calendar on the local network. I've also created a Location in the Server App under Calendar and still can't see anything on the local network. Am I missing something really obvious?
    Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I hadn't explained everything fully. I don't want to open up my VPN to friends and family. I do have the router assigning the NAS a fixed IP, so that when I connect over the VPN I can use the local IP address to connect, as you have mentioned.
What I would like is for my friends or family to connect to my server over AFP or SMB using the public IP of my network, which my router then forwards onto my server, and display the available sharepoints configured using Mountain Lion server. However, the NAS drive is not an available option this way as it has a separate IP to the server.
As the NAS alllows guest access, I also don't want to configure the router to forward a specific port to it, as this way it will be open to the internet. I wanted to try and use my server as an authentication point, with profiles set using Mountain Lion server, and limited to file sharing services only.
    Hope this makes sense.

  • Slow Logon to Lion Server from Snow Leopard Machines

    Hi Everyone,
I am usually okay with computers however something has been baffling me for a while now!
We have recently updated our server from an ageing Tiger server to a Lion server. (Mac Mini Server)
We have a suite of Mac minis that are running 10.7.4 and have no trouble connecting to the server in fact they sign a relatively quickly.
We also have a set of MacBooks that are currently all updated to Snow Leopard (10.6)
The issue we are having is with those MacBooks:
When the user attempts to access their network share from any of those MacBooks running Snow Leopard the login works however it can take up to 2 min to login. This does happen over the wireless network, however I have also checked it by plugging them in with an ethernet cable and they exhibit the same behaviour.
This is obviously quite frustrating for all the people using the MacBooks.
I got strange feeling that the check box somewhere that I've missed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    A Little bit more information:
All of the Users are Open Directory Users
I'm guessing that this may be an issue with the authentication process and for some reason it is taking longer on the Snow Leopard Clients?

  • Can Lion Server replace Google Apps

    Hello,
Our business has just one imac, but we use it to manage the diaries of 15 staff. We have been using Google Apps (with our domain) to create 15 users and it has been handy to schedule diaries in this way.
I must now use Microsoft Office for Mac, everything works fine except that it does not sync with Google Apps calendars. At all! Forums say that it is pointless trying.
    So my question is.
    - can I ditch Google Apps
    - turn my imac into a 'lion server' (I have already purchased the app)
    - set up 15 user accounts
    - then sync these accounts with Outlook for Mac?
If anyone can possibly advice and point me in the right direction for step-by-step instructions, then that would be fantastic.
Otherwise, are there any other altneratives???

Problem solved.  I had smpt and not SMTP.  Fat finger problem.

  • Lion Server does not support Windows 7 clients?

I have several clients who have Windows 7 workstations and Mac OS Lion servers. They cannot connect to their shares using any of the server accounts. I just installed Lion clean, bought Lion server and cannot connect to the shares from Windows 7 (Pro 64bit). I can connect from Windows XP Pro workstation. This is a major problem. I have read of some ways of changing the security settings in the bowels of Windows 7 to allow it connect (it is noted that these also say it will not work on Windows Home) but so far none of these methods have for me or my fellow techs. Not to mention that if to connect a Windows 7 client to a Mac we have to get in a muck with the registry every time - even if this were successful - it is a terrible way to support Windows.

This has been madness. So many alchemist fixes around Google for what seems to be a common problem: edit the registry, alter security settings, configure OpenDirectory, kiss a frog. What happened to the idea of sharing a folder on the LAN and getting back to work?
How do I confirm the string that serves as my Lion Server's FQDN?
On a (perhaps) related matter, I am confused because in my PC's "Network" list I see my Lion server as "MACMINI-0302EC" which seems like a generic machine name plus partial MAC address, but I've given the server a customized name in the server's System Preferences...

  • Hosting Software Updates for OS X Lion or Lion Server on Snow Leopard Server: instructions don't fit

I have a server running 10.6.8 and several services. Because some of the systems in my house are going to be upgraded to Lion (not the server), I want to be able to host Lion updates in addition to Snow Leopard Updates.
I followed the instructions to the letter located at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4771 to make this happen, but a majorpart of instruction 5 does not exist!
I went to find the line
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Darwin/11
in the /etc/swupd/swupd.conf file, but it does not exist. And yes, I do have root access, as I own the server.
I've searched for duplicate files with the same name, and I have had no luck.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, then what is the solution?

Solved. Thanks for the solution at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15678001.
Can a mod/admin close this please? Thanks.

  • Will OS X Mountain Lion Server work full feature with PC Clients?

I have a small business with mixed PC and MACs, I want to purchase a Mac Mini Server and launch it in our company, we are about 25 employees that might increase to about 40 so I wonder if sevices like Calendar, VPN, Messages, Chat, Mail, Contacts, wiki, profile manager.. etc work with PC Clients, what will and what will not?
I would like if at least, contacts, calendar, mail, wiki, open directory, VPN and iChat work, the basic things one needs in business to work with PC clients, will they work seemlessly, do I need to install certain software on PC clients... any thoughts or pointers?

    Hello,

I recommend using eM Client for windows. The software is not free however I find that windows users seem to like it better then the free software because its more like Outlook with everything in built in.
I would setup both PPTP and L2TP VPN. PPTP for your windows clients and L2TP for your Mac Users. The VPN service on the Mac Server is pretty solid and I have very little problems with windows clients.

  • Lion Server not handing out DHCP addresses to Snow Leopard client

I have been pulling my hair out over this.
    Here is the layout
Lion Server running on the newest Mac Mini and doing mail, DNS, DHCP, Software update and has a valid, not self assigned, certificate
3 clients running Lion Desktop (2 iMACs and a MBP pro (all no more that a year old and all woth the current updates)
1 client running Snow Leopard Desktop (last years 13 inch MBA)
The 3 Lion clients can get dhcp fro mthe Lion server without any issue
The SL client cannot get a DHCP address from the Lion server
A tcpdump shows the DHCP request coming from the MAC address of the SL client but no response from the Lion Server and nothing showing a deny in the logs for the DHCP server or any other system/kernel logs. The Lion clients all show the request and reply for them. All 4 clients currently have a static assignment in DHCP but even if I remove them all and do auto-assign for everything or even each one individually, the SL client will not get an address both on the Wifi and Ethernet (I have the USB ethernet adapter).
I also have an Aiport Extreme and if I use that for the DHCP server then all clients get the addresses. I know the DHCP server in the extreme cannot be shut down but if you give the extreme a static address then assign dhcp on the extreme to only give out one address and that is the same one that is statically assigned then it "thinks" it is out of addresses and no longer tries to assign addresses
At first I thought there was a conflict between the extreme and the Lion server but as I mentioned above, tcpdump clearly shows the requests going right to the Lion server
I'm usually pretty good at this kind of thing but this one has me stumped. I'm thinking bug, anyone else run into this yet?

  • Snow Leopard client for NetRestore image not being recognized in Mountain Lion Server

I target firewired a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and ran System Imaging Utility and the machine does not show up as an option. Does Mountain Lion Server support Snow Leopard NetRestore images or am I doing something wrong?

I'm actually trying to figure that out as well. We have 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 Images we wanted to put together for our netrestore images on our server, but can only do 10.8 images currently.
We also have the AppleCare Helpdesk diagnostic kit which includes hardware tests, we were only able to get the newer mid-2012 and late-2012 Diagnostic utilities to netboot but none of the older ones.
So do we need a server running the older OS to get these or is there a better alternative? i mean really shouldnt be a problem considering theyre running inside of an image and dont rely heavily on the server resources other than to say "Yep, goto this file/directory".
I'd like to know more as well....

  • Snow Leopard Server with Lion Server for APNS

    Hello Everyone,
I'm wanting to keep my Snow Leopard Server (Xserve) setup in place its working great, and cant afford to have any down time on the company network. What I would like to do is setup up an additional Mac Mini with Lion server to handel just the APNS. Is this possiable.
I would be running all of the services, mail, OD, addressbook, caladar, on the Snow leopard server but want to use Lion Server to push out and manage some Lion clients, and iPhone with a second server has anyone done this, can this setup work?
    Thanks!
    Robert

    Hi Robert
"Can you provide the basics for setup?"
Apart from making sure DNS is configured correctly - as always - there's not much else you need to know. Server has to be configured as an OD Master. It does work with the default self-signed certificate although Apple do recommend you purchase one from a CA such as Verisign. I mention Verisign because it's trusted by the US Government. Once you've got your push notification certificate from Apple, enable the relevant option in the Server App. From there create the enrolment profile and key in the relevant url in your IOS device. The rest is fairly obvious. If DNS is not properly configured for your network this part probably will fail.
"Can this all be completed in server admin, or the new server.app?"
AFAIK Server Admin is not involved with APNS.
"Did you just bind Lion Server too Snow Leopard Server, connect to another OD, or replica?"
This was on a publicly accessible server that was its own OD Master. Provided things are configured correctly I can't see why it can't work with an environment that's behind NAT.
"What do I setup after this?"
Apart from making sure DNS is configured properly as well as the tip regarding trusted certificates I can't think of anything else? From what I've seen MDM in Lion Server is very good and what's more quick on the devices I tested. I only tested IOS devices and testing was done 'over the air.' You can still use the ICPU assuming you kept a copy of the download?
    HTH?

  • Lion Server Can it manage file vaule

Just wondering, can Lion Server manage client mac's file vault, so that as a corporate admin, could I centrally manage file vault for mac's in my environment?

The question really hinges on the specific revision of XServe you have.
You don't state how many 'several years' is, and the rules vary a lot based on the age/revision of your server.
If your server is an older PowerPC-based server then 10.5.8 is the latest you can run.
Any of the Intel-based XServes can run at least Lion (10.7.x).
Some of the Intel-based XServes can run Mountain Lion (10.8). This depends on the boot EFI firmware on the machine - the earliest machines only had a 32-bit boot loader, newer versions have the required 64-bit EFI.
So you need to look more closely at your machine in order to determine how far you can upgrade it. System Profiler should give you this data, or you can lookup your server on EveryMac
