Can local admin change the root password in Mavericks

One of my people and I keep going back and forth with this question. I remember reading somewhere (cannot find it now) that in 10.9 Apple changed it, so a local admin could not longer change the root password if it has been enabled by the IT group.

AFAIK, any admin account user can set/change the root password. See OS X Mavericks: Enable and disable the root user for details. If you or IT don't trust your people, don't give them admin privileges.

  • How to change the "root" password ?

How can i change the root password on solaris 11. i tried it with "sudo passwd root ". and everthing should be ok, but i can´t login over ssh with the user "root " and the new password .
    Thank Chris

Under Solaris 11 root is a role, not an account. This means that you cannot log into the machine as root. You have to log in using a different account and then gain privileges using su, sudo or pfexec. You can convert root to a normal account using the command:
    rolemod -K type=normal root
however, root was made a role for legitimate security reasons. If you can avoid changing root to a normal account you should probably do so because it provides an additional layer of security for the rather overpowered root account.
If you want ssh access to the converted root account, you also need to configure the ssh server to allow root logins by enabling the PermitRootLogins statement in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. Again, remember that doing this is loosening security on the root account.

  • I'm trying to change my apple ID on iPad but won't let me until I give the old password to old ID. I no longer have access to the old email so I can't even change the old password.

I need to change my old Apple ID to my new. I don't know the password to the old ID and no longer have access to this email. Is there an easy way around this?

I'm with JC4567, I have my old email turn up when going into my iCloud settings. It won't let me change the email to my new one (this new email and password are already updated on my PC. Why can't it just automatically update all other devices with it???), it's grey'ed out so I can't click and edit. I read somewhere that if we delete (older ios) or log off (newer ios) iCloud in the Settings then we can log in with the new AppleID and password. When I tried that it brought up my old AppleID and demanded my old password to my to turn off the "Find My iPhone" part in the iCloud. So I couldn't delete/log out of iCloud without turning off Fimd My iPhone. Catch 22. How do we fix that?

  • You can no longer change the password

    Good day!
I have a problem on a Netweaver 2004s BI server.
When a user tries to change his password at the logon screen, the error message : "You can no longer change the password" appears.
To clarify, user types his current user id and password in the logon screen, then clicks the "New Pasword" button. Then immediately the "You can no longer change the password" appears.
This is not similar to the message that says you can only change your password once per day.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Regards
    Derik

Ah.. that was interesting.. actually you wouldn't know about these errors which do not give u a clue.. in the right direction unless you have faced the problem. Good that the problem is resolved.
Its more quicker to actually help, if you have access to the system.
This error could have been easily sorted out by checking system log entry and audit logs or SUIM.

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, hold down the C key at the chime.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.

  • Can I change the administrator password on Snow Leopard using Tiger discs

Hi, I had a fault with my mac and the o/s had to be reinstalled. The shop put Snow Leopard on my mac and I changed the password which I later forgot. My mac instructed me to input the install discs etc but I only have my original Tiger Install discs. I rang the shop but they say they are not allowed to change the password but that I can do it with my old discs.
I tried to reset it but it wouldn't work and on only the first occasion when I restarted with the disc and by pressing C on reboot etc did it launch into the 'select language' etc. Now every time I try, it just starts normally.
Is there any way I can change the administrator password on Snow Leopard using my Tiger discs? thanks

Why didn't the "shop" give you the Snow Leopard system discs? You need those to troubleshoot. Especially if you need to use Apple's Hardware Test. Strange.

Agreed about predefined WiFi key. You will find it in clear and capable of being changed under Advanced Settings / Wireless Settings / WPA.

Should work if you enter the code and hit the return key.  Here is a step by step article.

  • Is there a way to change the VNC password thru unix command in ARD2?

In a local network, I get access denied errors from macs that have the vnc password different than the Administrative login user password. I needed to change the Admistrator password which I did thru the Unix command in ARD2.
    Now.
Is there a way to change the VNC password thru unix command in ARD2?
    Example:
    remote computer setup
    Panther 10.3.9
    vnc password - gopher
user ID - testARD with admin rights
    user password - backdoor
    ARD2 Computer setup
    10.4.10
    login ID - testARD
    password - backdoor
I get the blue icon but get an 'access denied' error.
I change the password from backdoor to gopher.
I get the red with dash icon but, can get access to the computer.
What is going on? Is ARD2 using the VNC resource instead of ARDs resources?

A quick search of Google finds this <http://www.macgeekery.com/tips/cli/settingremote_desktops_vnc_password_interminal>. I have not tested this myself.

    Changing your administrator password
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html
Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

Hi, I have even the worst problem,

  • Error while trying to change the user password on OSX Lion

    Hello,
I am trying to change the user password ( no admin user ) using the webinterface. I enabled the functionality in webservices on the server.
I can loginto the three line password changing form. After I enter the old and two times the new password, I get the information
"Your request could not be completed. The password server may be unavailable."
How can I fix this problem?  I also tried https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2485167?start=0&tstart=0.
    Thanks in advance for help.

I currently have this error on my 10.6.8 ML server when trying to change password.
In my situation, the message definitely comes from the password policies. As soon as I use a new password that respects minimum complexity (e.g. 8 characters min, 1 lowercase letter, 1 uppercase letter, 1 number), the password changes flawlessly.
It would be nice to change this horrible message to something more meaningful... If someone has any ideas on how to do this, thanks for sharing!

All Oracle components on the installation media are compliant with Optimal Flexible Architecture. This means, Oracle Universal Installer places Oracle Database components in directory locations, assigning the default permissions that follow Optimal Flexible Architecture guidelines.
Oracle recommends that you use Optimal Flexible Architecture, specially if the database will grow in size, or if you plan to have multiple databases.

  • How do  you reset the root password in Mountain Lion?

After install of Mountain Lion on my old iMac, I could not enter administrator, no password would work, Apple support helped me go through terminal to reset root password and root as administrator . I then was able to reset myself as administrator with a new pasword. I used that paassword a few times now it wont accept it again. I dont remember all the steps to reset the root password and recover from this situation.. Can anyone help?  Is this a bug in Mountain Lion?

I'm having similar issues but other concerns
    1. Can't go into recovery mode since its protected by firmware password, which I don't have. All option keys sequences go into the same firmware padlock, which I don't have the apparent pin.
    2. In terminal mode it didn't happen to recognize that unix command.  Also since I'm just on guest would that reset for the admin or possibly the guest acct?
    3. I've done the DIMM pulls and even though older model, 2011, it didn't appear to a reset for the firmware password.
    Any other options??
