Can Logic plug ins remove background noise from interview?
A friend with an important interview recorded in noisy conditions has asked me to help remove background noise - never done this technically.
Is there a Logic or third party plug in that would could remove background noise from a spoken word interview? Have tried EQ which improves the sound slightly but not a solution.
Anyone with specialised knowledge of this sound editing operation?
cheers

There are several 3rd party denoisers, they mostly work by first 'learning' the noise footprint of the audio, for which it is best to record a few seconds of silence (with an open mic).
These will all do a decent to excellent (it all depends on the source material) job:

Is it that background noise (traffic, talking etc) drowns out the words? Then you'd probably have more luck with (radical) eq-ing and/or notch filtering to find the most dominant frequency range of the speaker in relation to the background noise.
As an interviewer myself I will point out that even with a small disctaphone you need to have some awareness of how the microphone picks up things. As soon as you nead to lean towards whoever you're talking to, just to make sure you're audible, the dictaphone on the table is probably recording mainly ambient noise, the interview being part of that. This is especially a problem when interviewing in a busy public space.

Ya you got it rightly I read a guide here http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_audio_filtertutoria.html
so I am aware of basic things at least.Like you gave an example of Main Parameter in your previous reply similarly I feel if some where I can get these parameters in Filter what do they do that may help.

  • Removing background "noise" from an interview recording

    Hello!
I was wondering if it was possible on Soundtrack Pro to remove continuous background "noise" from a recorded interview? An example would be someone clicking a pen or a tapping his foot during the duration of the interview. Any advice would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks so much!
    Ted

It can, but what you are describing are not continuous, but points of sound. Continuous refers more to hums and vibrations, things like air conditioner noise or the sound of traffic. That said you can still give it a try. You can also try running the click and pop filter and see what you get.
Regarding these point sources I have better luck removing them with Adobe's Soundbooth. Their cascading frequency display allows you to draw irregular shapes around sounds like these and then extract them without disturbing the other sounds around them.
Take a look at the manual.
    Good luck

  • Removing background noise from captured clip

I wanted to edit an audio which was captured with Video also it contains some background noise.Which filter should I try for this in FCP.

I read that tutorial it is nice but I have only Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD not the SoundTrack Pro is there no option in FCP for editing audio I do not have much to edit I have to remove sound of a crow and in another video captured audio is having sound very low without increasing volume it is not possible to listen to it.
So for this any thing that can be done within FCP.
I have only Soundtrack 1.2 which is not professional version.

  • Advice with removing background noise from recording

I made a recording but there is an extrotor fan noise going in the background which is really off putting, is there a way to edit this?

Hi Sarah, and welcome to the forum!
Regarding your question, any solution, even the most sophisticated ProTools-based one, uses some sort of comb filtering/eq to remove those unwanted frequencies. This means that your sound will suffer to a certain extent because the frequencies occupied by the fan noise overlap with instruments/voice in your recording, and when you remove the frequencies associated with the fan, you also remove part of your music.
Having said that, you can try the following and see if it works for you:
Choose a parametric eq plug-in (you didn't mention which s/ware you're using, but most programs that can record do also have eq, so I'm assuming you have one) and boost generously one of the frequencies below 1000Hz and sweep it across the frequencies field. You should find a spot where the fan noise is most prominent. Now narrow the eq curve and redo your sweep - same procedure than before. Then do it again with - yet again an even narrower eq curve. Your goal here is to zoom as much as possible on the offending fan frequencies. Once you have found them this way, cut around 2-4db. You will remove sound elements in your music as well as fan noise, but that's as good as you'll get.
What you can also do is try to use a mistake creatively. Eq you track radically, experiment. Use the fan noise as if it were another instrument. "Play" it. Don't be afraid to mangle the recording, push the envelope. Who knows, something interesting might come out. I always liked turning a disadvantage into an advantage
All else failing, you just might have to re-record it, and if you do, take a chance, do something different; don't try to emulate what you had before because it will only hinder you. Try something new.
    Hope this helps a little.

  • Removing background noise from photographs

    Hello -
I have a handful of photographs that contain background annoyances such as basketball hoops, doors, etc. I am new to Elements 7 and was wondering if there was a simply way to address this issue. Again, I am a newby and not yet thoroughly famliar with the Elements tool set. I've provided an example of what I'm attempting to correct.
If I could get a step-by-step formula, that would be great!
    Thank you.

There are many ways to remove unwanted items and this is a whole topic in itself. However since your example has so many things going on in the background and since it is such a great group shot I tried a studio portrait look:
    Here's how:
    1. Add a blank layer above the picture.
    2. Set the Foreground/Background colors (color chips at bootom of toolbar) to light and dark shades of brown.
    3. Apply the Clouds filter to this layer to get the portrait-like background. If the cloud effect looks to harsh it can be softened with a Gaussian Blur.
    4. Add a Levels adjustment layer above the picture layer but do not make any adjustments, Just click OK.
    5. Group the background layer and Levels layer.
    6. At this point all you see is the background. Now actvivate the Levels layer and fill with black. This restores the picture.
    7. Set the Foreground/Background colors to their white/black defaults.
    8. Use the Brush tool with a hard brush and paint with white to reveal the background. If you paint to far and cover one of the persons, switch to black and paint to restore him/her. While painting you can type "X" to toggle between the black and white. Note that for the subject's hair the results looked more natural using a soft brush.
    9. I also used the Clone tool to remove some flash spots on the faces and glasses.
    10. Finally cropped to a 8x10 proportion.
If you like this I uploaded the full size picture to
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1RI3O47sxKtNYqO0xth1CES4djZvFU
Right-click it to downlaod to your PC.
I can also send you the psd file if want to tweak it some more.

  • Removing background noise on only one of two tracks

Hello and thank you in advanced for your help. I am new to STP but well versed in FCP. I've recently discovered the wonderful feature of removing background noise in my video clips.
I'm having trouble with one instance though: I have footage shot with a microphone into only one channel of the camera. In FCP, I highlight that channel of audio and "send to" STP just as I have other clips. This time, however, no matter what I seem to try, both left and right audio channels show up in STP and I can't seem to separate them in order to remove the hiss from only one channel.
If I proceed as normal and select a portion of the hiss to set as "noise print" I can only select both tracks, not only the track I want. Probably a matter of a simple button, but I don't know STP well enough and the manual was no help. Anyway, continuing with the process to "reduce noise" and adjusting the parameters I hear almost no difference when turning the filter on and off.
I'm not sure if I've explained my scenario the best, but I'd appreciate some assistance.
    Thank you!
    Eric P

    Eric,
Make sure the stereo file is open in the Editor as an Audio file. Click inside the editor window area and move your mouse pointer up to the top of the left channel's window border. If done correctly a tiny "L" will appear. This lets you know you can select the left channel, or portions of it.
Do the same for the right channel. However instead of moving the mouse pointer to the top area of the window, move it to the bottom of the Right channel's pane. Look for the tiny 'R."
Proceed as normal: Set a noise print, adjust parameters, and process. You'll find only the selected channel will be processed.

  • How can I find and remove duplicate photos from my computer?

How can I find and remove duplicate photos from my computer?

    Terence,
Yes, the duplicates appear in the iPhoto window. I have folders with same name occuring two or even three times sometimes with exactly the same set of photos (ie photos with the same ID) and sometimes with a limited set of photos. Other  folders appear only once.
I normally take my MacBook with me if I'm shooting a lot of photos, such as on holiday, and then want to transfer them to my iMac when i get home. Other times I transfer the camera's memory stick directly to my iMac.
I have great difficulty transferring the photos from my MacBook to my iMac. I don't want to store my photos on my iDisk due to the length of time it takes to upload them.
    Thanks again.

When you browse to Computer is your CF card shown as a removable drive?
If not try shutting down the computer and re-starting and then inserting the CF card or plugging in the USB again.
Open Elements Organizer and press Ctrl+G to bring up the downloader and under Source click refresh to locate your CF card.

  • 3rd party AU plug ins vs Logic Plug ins

has any one got any suggestions of any 3rd party plug ins or instruments that compare or better the Logic ones, i am very happy indeed with what i have at the moment but feel some of the sounds i am getting from the synths are lacking a bit of warmth, maybe i need to dig a little deeper or maybe there are better things out there, obviously the ES2 is a killer piece of software but some of the pads that i am creating are not up to scratch. Is this just me? am i not adding enough plug ins to the synth or is it just not as deep as people say it is? i hear waves are a good too, discuss..............Thanks

    3rd party stuff eh?
Spectrsonics makes stellar AU plug ins. Can't wait for the aforementioned atmosphere to come out as UB this fall.
Also mentioned before, Reason is just a fun program that is very powerful and inspiring.
Odd that many people mentioned the NI products. I would, but after getting FM8, I just can't say I am an NI fan.
FM8 sound great! The software is powerfull, the UI is easy to use, the flexibility is enormous, but I can't recall all the setting of patches with Channel strip settings. I was quite disappointed as I wanted to Use FM8 to give me that DX-7 Rhodes sound to use for live gigs, but recalling a performance channel strip didn't load the envelopes, and the sound just didn't work. I emailed NI and asked what the deal was, and they told me it was a bug, sorry. The only workaround they could give me was to load the patch from FM8 it's self.
I still use FM8 for recordings, but never for live use. I also decided not to try any new NI products fearing more incompatibilities with how I work.
NI's stuff does sound great, but with tweaking I can get most of my other synths to match it.

  • How do I eliminate background noise from a recording?

I loaded an audiotape from a cassette to my MacBook. There is too much background noise and I don't know how to get rid of it. Is it possible? Thanks, Miriam

One option is to use the (free) Audacity. Just load the mp3 or aiff and follow the instructions to construct a noise profile and then get rid of the background noise. Once that is done, one can reimport the file into iMovie, if you choose.
Export the file from iMovie 09 as mp3 or aiff file. Import into Audacity. Get rid of the noise. Export from Audacity as a mp3 or aiff file, and use that as you like.
To find out how to use Audacity, I recommend checking out the fine tutorials on YouTube.

  • Can automation plug-in gets error notification from Photoshop ?

    Hi All,
Suppose I open the photoshop file(.psd) and font is missing in the layer. Photoshop shows error dialog box. Can automation plug-in get any kind of notification regarding this font missing in layer ?
I want to do some stuff if font is missing in the layer.
    Any idea/logic ?
    Thanks,
    Amar

    Hi,
Thanks Tom for the response and idea. I can now check whether the font used in text layer is present or not by checking in font list for photoshop.
Now I am stuck in another point: load font (saved in local folder) in the photoshop in runtime. Can we update the font list of the photoshop by automation plug-in ?
I can get font list from descriptor using "kfontListStr", update the lists like "keyFontName", "fontPostScriptName",  "fontFamilyName" and call
    "sPSActionControl->Play(&result, eventSet, descSet, plugInDialogSilent);".
But at the moment its returning error code and I don't really know if these are enough to update font list in photoshop.
If this can't be done by automation plug-in then let me know some idea on how to solve loading font in photoshop in runtime.
    Thanks,
    Amar

  • Where to put Logic Plug-ins?

When using a product like Miroslav Philharmonik, I can get the program to run, but I can not figure out how to make it work with logic. The plug-ins do not show up! Someone please help me know what folders to put what in. Thanks

luke79 wrote:Why is it, that when I run philharmonik in logic, I have to load the intruments into strange channels, I can't just use channel one, I have to switch it around. Does that make sense?
No, not really... what channel(s) do you mean? I have never seen "strange" channels in Logic (or Philharmonik). A bit more detail, or even screenshots, might help.

  • Removing background music from voiceover

A client of mine had a local new station do a little feature about them. I was given the Video TS files and asked to put it up to their website. But I need to remove the background music because of copyright issue. I tried to contact the news station but they weren't any help. Is there any software that can help me seperate the voice over from the background music.
    many thanks

If the audio files are mixed- that is VO and Music all in one file- then there is no way to "extract" the VO. As far as the file is concerned, there is no difference between the VO information and the music infomation. All one thing.
I hope I understand correctly that that's what you are hoping to do. And if so, then sorry to be the bearer of bad news. You need to get the original VO file before the music was added...if you can sweet-talk the news station.
