Can LR2 embed new metadata into TIFF files?

If I add keywords and other metadata to my TIFF files, can they be embedded into a TIFF file, or are they kept as XMP sidecar files?
How about JPG files?
Thanks!

Just to be sure you know, you can also simply export new copies of the files. They will contain all metadata you added in Lightroom. You do not have to have Lightroom write to your originals if you don't want to. As an added benefit, if you did any Develop changes, they will actually be baked into the tif export file, while if you only write metadata, the changes are only written as metadata and only Lightroom and ACR will understand and render the modified image correctly.

  • Use of XMP Custom Panel to automate insertion of metadata into PDF file.

I'm new to the world of XMP so please bear with me.
I'm exploring ways of automating the insertion of metadata into PDF files, either at the time of creation, or through a batch process. The metadata values for a given set of documents would be static, so these could be "hard coded" into the mechanism use to insert the metadata.
Would an XMP Custom Panel be something I could use to achieve this goal. If so, can you please provide some details on how to go about doing this.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can I split a class into 2 files?

I converted a C++ program to Java recently and it works fine, but I ran into a problem.
One file is very large and I need to add more functionality. Unlike with C++ where you can just put new functions in another file, I don't see a way to do it in Java.
I made another file, and therefore another class, but the compiler complains that it can't call a static function from non-static context. (I did not declare it static so I guess it's assuming it) But I understand why. So I made the new class "extend" the old one so "this" would exist but that doesn't work -- Is it because the new class is a subclass of the original class?
There must be a way to do this. But I don't see what is likely obvious. HELP! And thanks.

Generally, however, a class that is large enough to split up into separate files is either one class that should be modularized further into separate classes, or it already is modularized and all that code is the result of many inner classes. What some people do is promote those inner classes to top-level members in their own file, and mark them as package-private. Using a package you can basically have two classes that know everything about each other and have full access to each other.
But personally, and until I see justification otherwise, semantics in Java being unbreakingly tied to a certain file structure and naming is the most bonehead and, frankly, non-Java thing about Java.
There's probably a pre-processor out there that will let you split a class into multiple files and will combine them into a single source file just-in-time to pass to the compiler.

how can I embed a song into a keynote presentation?

    (From Keynote Help)
Adding Sound to an Individual Slide
Sound added to an individual slide plays only on the slide to which it’s been added.
Here are ways to add sound to a slide:
Drag a sound file from the Finder anywhere onto the slide canvas or to a media placeholder.
Click Media in the toolbar, choose iTunes in the Audio pane of the Media Browser, select a playlist, and then drag a file or playlist anywhere onto the slide canvas (including to a media placeholder).
The sound file is represented on the slide canvas by a speaker icon, but this icon doesn’t appear when you play the slideshow.
You can start and stop sound playback at any time while the slide is showing. When you advance to the next slide, the sound playback automatically stops. To control when the music starts and stops, select the sound file icon, and then set playback options and use the Start Audio and Stop Audio effects in the Build Inspector. For more information, see Adjusting Media Playback Settings and Creating Movie Builds.
When you add media files to your slideshow, make sure that they will be available if you transfer your document to another computer. When saving your document, make sure to select “Copy audio and movies into document” in the Save window after you choose Save or Save As. (If you don’t see the option, click the disclosure triangle next to the field, and then click Advanced Options.)
Also note that some media files are protected under copyright law. Some downloaded music may be played only on the computer where the download occurred. Make sure the computer you’re using has permission to play all the media files included in your slideshow.

Maybe installing a hpgl-driver and print to a file.
Download the hpgl-graphics filter from microsoft (was included until
Office 95 i think) and import it to the word-document.
You'll lose the colors this way (as far as i remember).
Use a postscript printerdriver to print to a file. Convert it to
something, you can import to your application.
Use a pdf-printerdriver. But I don't know how you can import graphics
from pdf (a subset of postscript) to other applications.
Print to PostScript-File, use ImageMagick's "convert" program to conver
    t
it to something userful for you and import it.
    These are my ideas...

  • Elements 12 Strips Metadata from Tiff Files When Saving?!

When I bring a photo into Elements 12 in tiff format from Capture NX2  and edit it, then save it, the metadata gets stripped out. I want the photo to retain the metadata so that Organizer can sort my photos by data and time captured. I've verified that the metadata was present before editing the file in Elements. How can I do this? I've tried both checking and unchecking the "Ignore Camera Data" box in the Saving Files Preferences. Thanks

Jim - of course the original is not retained: the apps are doing a safe save (where you save to a new filename, then replace the original with the duplicate in a semi-atomic way). This is done using standard OS APIs whenever possible, and is done in most applications. All file saves in Photoshop behave the same way, except maybe PDF (which is in some code we don't control) and SaveForWeb (also different code).
Again, the root cause is an Apple bug in the way they chose to associate metadata with the files, and how they updated existing APIs to deal with the additional metadata. We might be able to work around this using new APIs -- but should apps have to change their code every time someone decides to add new metadata invisible to the app and separate from the file? Shouldn't the design of the metadata system be more robust, and work with existing applications? Shouldn't someone have thought about this before releasing a metadata system, that, well, nobody knew about?

  • Can no longer write metadata to Raw files

My team an d I are working in Photoshop CS5, we write metadata to jpegs and Raw files- saving to Raw database not as sidecar .xmp files.  We are no longer able to save the metadata to Raw files.  There is no error message, the data writes like normal and the user who writes the metadata can see it but when you open in another computer the metadata fields are empty, however the jpegs do have the new metadata.  Was there a setting change at some point? This has been going on for a couple months and I cannot find an answer anywhere.  Again, we batch write to RAW+Jpeg, the jpeg files save the metadata but the Raw files look like the data saved but is not visible on any computer other thant he one that added the new metadata. This is occurring on multiple computers, both Mac and PC.

    TimVasilovic wrote:
I understand the process you are describing,  In the past I have been able to embed metadata to a Raw file, move it to a server, pick that file up on another computer and see the metadata without need of the .xmp sidecar.  Is the ability to embed no longer supported  by Photoshop? Since this issue began we have taken to doing all our metadata editing in PhotoMechanic, which embeds without creating a sidecar.  If Photoshop is pushing people to create sidecar .xmp files only for writing metadata to Raw files I will probabaly move fully to PhotoMechanic because using sidecars has proven tricky in the past with how our files get moved around.
If using Adobe Camera Raw on camera raw file you either have an XMP sidecar file created or the data is stored in a database.  Which happens it is your option in Edit/camera raw.  If you use ACR and edit a jpeg it does not create a distinct XMP file but it is also not directly written to the image either.  One can still delete the edits in Bridge with Edit/develp settings.
If you use a DNG the metadata is written to the image.  Not sure what process Photo Mechanic uses.
It appears to be a permission problem as other than CS6 Bridge is now 64 bit and has a new cache method there are no changes in how it handles metadata.

  • Incrementally appending  custom XMP metadata into PDF files

I have a problem writing custom XMP metadata into a PDF document (I'm using the XMP Toolkit SDK).
The problem is that I don't know whether is possible to expand the XMP packet in order to append metadata incrementally into the document, and, if it is possible, I don't know how to do it. The program I wrote succesfully appends an item to an array four times, but it fails when trying to append the fifth one. The reason obviously is that the packet gets full and there is not room for more metadata. The error message, if I force the PutXMP call, is:
ERROR: Can't fit into specified packet size
So, what can I do? How to enlarge the packet or make it expandable? Or, otherwise, have I to inject a new XMP packet with the up-to-date information in it? How?
And a last question: Have I to scan for packets when dealing with PDF files? No smart handlers are available for this kind of files?
    Thanks in advance.

I think you should test this with one or two pictures - import/convert, save metadata to file, geotag, read metadata. Also try import/convert, make small adjustment, save metadata to file, geotag, read metadata. In iView I often write metadata to DNG's that have been adjusted, then read the metadata in Lightroom - sometimes I add more data in iView and do more adjustments.
I have seen the problem you describe, but it has been with raw files which I have adjusted in Lightroom but haven't saved out the metadata. I have then created an xmp sidecar in iView, and read the metadata in LR. So the sidecar had no ACR/LR instructions. The result was that my adjustments were wiped out. What I suspect is that something similar is happening with your DNGs - that conversion creates them but doesn't write the ACR/LR fields.
So try a few alternative sequences.

  • Can you embed a PDF into a Captivate 8 project?

    Hi,
Can you embed a PDF document into a captivate project?
I know i shouldnt compare, but in Articulate Story Line, you are able to add 'resourses' into the project which sit alongside the eLearning to provide further reading.
Can you do this in Captivate? but without it linking to an external sourse such as local or shared drive?
    Thanks
    Chris

    To tmpe222,
I'm not a Cp expert, but it seems to me that there's no sense in simply trying to stick a pdf document in the Scorm package. What good would that do? The file would be in the package, but that doesn't mean it would be 'embedded in the project' in any meaningful sense of the term.
I don't know of any way to embed a pdf document directly into a Cp project. But couldn't you simply convert the pdf file into an image (jpeg or gif)? This you could easily insert in your project. It would be inserted as a standard object. And then you could do all the nice things that you can do with any object: put it on slide to be accessed only if the participant wants to view it; use effects so that it enters nicely; add annotation . . . the sky's the limit.
Does this help at all, or am I on the wrong track?
    Best regards,
    Marvin DuBois

  • I can't drag new snippets into mini bridge in CC

I can no longer drag new snippets into mini bridge after an upgrade to CC.  When I try to drag an item into mini bridge I see a green plus icon for a fraction of a second then in disappears. This is the second computer (macbook) I've had this problem on. Similar situation with both computers. Everything worked when I was on CS6, but after installing CC it stopped working. Uninstalling CS6 doesn't seem to have any impact on the problem.

I don't think I understand what you're trying to do. When you export a snippet, you're creating a separate IDMS file in an external location. If you wanted to move the snippet to a different external location, it would make sense to use the full Adobe Bridge application.
If I want to use a snippet file on a page, I can definitely drag the snippet from MiniBridge onto the page, and I get the Place cursor, and can place it in InDesign CC.

  • Getting metadata into jpeg files from RAW

I am transitioning to using RAW files more often. I add metadata, including GPS info, captions etc. Then invariably I need to get JPEGs to someone and have to go through the hassle of exporting the RAW as a JPEG with the metadata.
Is there a way I can get that metadata into the sorta sidecar JPEG file on my Mac without having to go through the export process?
I suppose I could designate the preference that on import the RAW and JPEG were treated as separate files; could I then just copy the metadata in? I haven't really worked with separate JPEG+RAW before. Would it happen automatically if I stacked them? Haven't really explored that.
It just seems that every time I have decided to use the RAW invariably I need the JPEG and if I don't have LR available (say I'm working on someone else's computer but accessing my own files) I'm stuck.

Is there a way I can get that metadata into the sorta sidecar JPEG file on my Mac without having to go through the export process?
Not in Lightroom. Maybe with ExifTool.
Then invariably I need to get JPEGs to someone and have to go through the hassle of exporting the RAW as a JPEG with the metadata.
Exporting is a hassle? Maybe Lightroom isn't the right program for you.
I suppose I could designate the preference that on import the RAW and JPEG were treated as separate files; could I then just copy the metadata in?
Yes, you could copy and paste (which in Lightroom is called "sync metadata"), but you would have to do it pair by pair, and then save the metadata to the files, and you still wouldn't get sidecar files.
Now, if you don't want the "sorta" sidecar files, if it will work for you to have the metadata written to the JPG files themselves (not sidecar files), then you can tell Lightroom to automatically write the metadata to the JPG files. But ... see my next comment
It just seems that every time I have decided to use the RAW invariably I need the JPEG and if I don't have LR available (say I'm working on someone else's computer but accessing my own files) I'm stuck.
Sorry, but exporting is really the only way to make edits and other metadata available to non-Lightroom programs. If you just want the metadata but not the edited photo, then have it written to the JPG files, but you won't be able to see your edits outside of Lightroom (or PSE or ACR or PS).
