Can mac book air be used for a micro business?

Hi I run a one-person business. I use an old laptop (which now needs replacing)  for:
Creating presentations using PowerPoint and delivering via projector mainly at various locations with equipment of varying quality/brand
Routine office work - using Mocrosoft Office at present
Email
My new laptop must be light but robust enough to withstand the everyday out of office use
I am a photography hobbyist - not a pro - so I need a reasonable editing feature to
That's about it
My recently aquired iPad has encouraged me to consider buying a Mac as a replacement for my dying PC
My question is:
Should I buy a Mac Book Air or should I go for a MB Pro? What are the pros and cons of each
thanks
Boss Croker

To answer your initial question first: Yes.
For what you are up to, you don't need super-power on hand, so any MBA or MBP will do. The rest depends on screen size, SSD/HDD space, RAM (>=4GB), connectivity (without adapters, e.g. for Ethernet), weight/size, and... budget.
Coming from a PC (I guess) you'll also need:
- A handful adapters to be able to connect with whatever you find with projectors and their wiring out there.
- Maybe Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, but if you don't depend that much on exchanging original MS docs with the outside world, Apple's Pages/Numbers/Keynote may do even better, or one of the free Office-like suites.
- With an MBA, you'll want a USB->Ethernet adapter. (Forget Thunderbolt->Ethernet, it's useless if you're on a projector at the same time, more expensive, and the USB->Ethernet is offered by more less expensive 3rd-party brands.)
iPhoto, which comes usually free with a new Mac, offers you easy and, for a hobbyist, decent basic editing tools.
Hope it helps.

i recently received a mac book air 11 inch for christmas ... i beliehve it was bought in the states from my father i was unaware of the specs until i opened and read it... and i was wondering if i can still do the upgrade to 8gb ram and bigger flash drive.. is this possible and for how much? its only a week old.

Your 14 days are up, however you could take your case to Apple Inc. regarding same,
    however those are the stipulations.
RAM cannot be upgraded however, period, its permanent on the logic board after mfg.
As for the SSD (solid state drive), upgrading same is a bad premise 9 times out of 10.
No notebooks is a mass storage device, and you need an external HD for data redundancy and backups regardless.
data that is static on your SSD and not used very often has no logical reason to be ON the notebooks, and best saved on a superslim external HD ($60)
SSD are very expensive, even a small one,  HD are cheap as dirt and users are recommended to have one regardless for many good reasons.

  • How do i set permission for mac book air to use drop box?

I am trying to share photos with my son's mac book air. Each time he tries to access my Mac it says he doesnt have permission to access the Dropbox. I cant find out how to change this.
His Mac book air has Air drop but it seems that I don't have this facility.
I have tried exporting files to Mac book air and it looks like they have gone through but can't find them!
It is exasperating- I thought sharing files would be easy- have no hard wiring to do it with so does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
    Any help appreciated!!!

If your MBP has Lion installed then you have iCloud by updating to 10.7.2.
If you have a 2011 MBP then Lion should be pre-installed. If it is not then you can purchase and download it via the App Store if you have 10.6.6 or later installed. If you have older PPC-only applications such as Office 2004, then they will have to be upgraded because PPC-only applications will not run in Lion.
You can, however, add a second partition to your hard drive and install Lion on that partition. In this way you can keep your older applications and boot into Snow Leopard when you need to use them.

  • Hi there can exchange my mac book air 13 2011 for 2012

HI, can i is like exchange my old mac book air 2012, anh how much i need to pay,
my model is macbook air 2011 13"

You may also find that an Apple Retailer will buy back your 2011 MBA IF you buy a 2012 MBA from them and if you have been on AppleCare.
The current pricing at my local Apple Retailer  is 50%. but you might be able to do better with your Retailer or privately.

  • Can mac book air run final cut

thinking of purchasing 13 inch Macbook air.  Will it run finalcut ?

    FCPX system requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better.
2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended).
    OpenCL-capable graphics card or
Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later.
256MB of VRAM (512MB of VRAM recommended).
Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher.
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X v10.7.2 or later (OS X v10.7.2 or later for broadcast monitoring).
    2.4GB of disk space.
Compare to the MBP models to see which ones meet these requirements. Seems both 13" models qualify.

  • Mac Book Air, when using iMovie shows Half of actual RAM

    Hi All,
I have noticied multiple number of times that when I use my MBA and run iMovie for movie editing. it seems to loose half of the RAM in my case I am using :
    - 1.3 Core i5
    - 4 GB RAM
    - OS X - 10.9.1
As soon as I start using iMovie and use it for sometime... I see the that fan comes on after sometime... and then the RAM halfs its self to 2GB. The total memory shown as well is 2 GB instead of 4GB. Is this a known problem ir yes what is the resolution to this problem.

  • Can I use 85 W power adapter for Mac Book AIR?

I got a 85 W adapter (used for Mac Book Pro) for a Mac Book AIR. Can I continue to use the 85 W Power adapter instead of buying another 45 W one?

Yes. The Macbook Air will only pull the max Wattage from the adapter as it's supposed to.

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

No.  Read the language part of the tech specs.

If you need to have Thai printed on the keys, that is something you would have to contact stores directly yourself to find out if that is possible.  Nobody in these forums represents Apple or any store.

  • Can I play ps4 using my Mac book air 11.1 mid 2012 as display ?

Can I play ps4 using my Mac book air 11.1 mid 2012 as display ?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store. Arrive early. Compare your MBA side by side with another of the same model. If the displays look the same, and if you're within 14 days of delivery, return the MBA for a full refund. If the displays don't look the same, ask the "Genius" to help you calibrate yours. Compare again. If you're still not satisfied, either return the unit or exchange it for another one.

  • Can you connect via thunderbolt a mac book air 13" (2013) and a imac 21" (2013) together, using the iMac 21" as a 2nd screen

Can you connect via thunderbolt a mac book air 13" (2013) and a imac 21" (2013) together, using the iMac 21" as a 2nd screen

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. As both have Thunderbolt, it's as simple as buying a Thunderbolt cable, connect them and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac, so the iMac will be used as an external display for the MacBook Air. If you want more information, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
