Can Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 run on 2009 MacPro?

I have a 2009 MacPro running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and its startup disk that needs repair, according to Disk Utility diagnostics.  It suggests to restart the computer from another disk to repair the HD.  I cannot locate the DVD disks that came with it, and tried to use Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) installation DVD to start the computer from it, and then run Disk Utility to repair the damaged disk.  However, every time I restart the computer from the DVD it, black curtain drops down and the error message says "restart your computer".  Does this mean that MacPro is incompatible with OS X 10.5, or something is wrong with the DVD that I have?  Any suggestions about how to repair the startup disk if I don't have the Snow Leopard DVD to start it from ?

You can call AppleCare and they will send you replacement DVD for your Mac. They will ask for your serial number to ensure that you get the correct set. They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • HELP - can't access library on G4 after transfer to 2009 MacPro

Help - I transferred my entire 23,000 photo library from iPhoto 06 on a G4/Tiger to a 2009 Mac Pro running the current version of iPhoto. I used firewire with the G4 in target disk mode and manually transferred the files over. Seem to have transferred most of the photos well (though I need to investigate a number of photos in a new "Recovered" folder).
Now, on launching iPhoto 06 on the G4 I am told I somehow made changes to the photo library using the newer version of iPhoto. Am I screwed (b/c the latest version of iPhoto requires Leopard, which won't run on my ancient G4)? How can I recover the ability to use iPhoto 2006 on the G4?

How did you do this? the porper way is to drag the iPhoto library as a single entity from the G4 to the MBP then launch iPhoto on the MBP

Did you? if you dragged the library to the pictures folder of the new computer and launched iPhoto then you did not change your original library

That depends on what happened - nothing you described would have modified your original library - is there more to tell?
You can try rebuilding the iPhoto 6 library using iPhoto library manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - it will create a totally new library so if it does not work you lose nothing

  • Mac OS X Leopard as server

    Hi,
We are developing an application running Web Server with php connected to mysql database. We are working now with Windows but wondering if we can move to Mac OS X Leopard. This server will not face internet and think we can use an iMac 3Ghz/500GB HD/4GB RAM, as server. We read we can use MAMP that comes with Apache, PHP and mySQL.
Can we use this configuration as server or you recommend buy MAC OS X Leopard Server and run over the iMac?. We are only sure the iMac is the only option we have available for the project.
Thanks for the help you can provide,

Thank you so much for your replies. In our actual server (Windows XP Pro) we also run XMail Server (to download messages from 3 mailboxes and redirect to several mailboxes depending on which account the message was received). Also our actual server works as file server for an accounting windows application sharing the same data with 3-5 computers.
The only additional applications are only to monitor the computer (HD used, Memory used, Processor used, Network Connections).
Still can use Leopard client as server or need Leopard Server?
    Thanks a lot,

If I purchase a brand new I-mac today do I have to run OS Lion or can I load Snow leopard?

Just faced that question, and the answer should be that you can run SL on the latest iMac.
(Our scenario:  Bought 3 iMacs in August.  Was surprised -- and relieved! -- to see that they arrived with SL installed on them, and grey system restore disks.  One of the machines was DOA.  Futzed around with it for 6 weeks trying to get it to work, decided it was dead, drove it 4 hours to the nearest Apple Store.  They gave us a new iMac, which when we got it back, turned out to have Lion on it.  Popped in one of the three grey restore disks that had come in August, installed SL, it works without any problems.)

  • Can't print from Intel Mac w/Snow Leopard to HP 2600

Can't print from Intel Mac w/Snow Leopard to HP 2600.  Upgraded from OS 10.4 and printer showed on printer list along with an Epson scanner. but continually shows printer as offline.  I finally deleted the HP Color Laserjet 2600n from the printer list.  When I attempted to re-install it, it doesn't find the printer at all.  I haven't attempted to use the scanner.  I also went to HP and downloaded the driver, no luck.  I've restarted the computer multiple times, tried it with the printer on, and printer off, as well as pulled the usb cable in and out both ends.  No error message on the printer display and it gpes through normal warmup until it shows the green light.  I run software update and it shows no updates needed.  Help!

When you press print the first window is pretty basic.
When you select print on that the next window should have an advanced option.
Click that and see if any of the options in the 3rd dropdown box allow you to specify the 'paper tray'.
    AC "
In this new windaow, click "advanced", go to "paper type/quality" and choose " best" and a photo paper. Then you will be able to choose a paper source (photo tray).
Once you have these settings, under presets do "save as", and you can choose the preset instead of going to advanced.
If you have the latest software and drivers downloaded from HP, this will work.

  • I have a new time capsule, want to use it in conjunction with iMac G5 and MacBook; laptop runs Snow Leopard  but G5 can't install Snow Leopard, is stuck at OS 10.4.11.  Am I doomed?  Can anyone advise me?  Thanks..

I have a new Time Capsule, want to  use it in conjunction with an iMac G5 and a MacBook.  MacBook runs Snow Leopard, but G5 (lacking Intel processor) can't install Snow Leopard, is stuck at OS 10.4.11.  Am I doomed?  Will appreciate any advice.  Thanks.

you should still be able to get a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which should run on your G5.

  • I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I strongly advise against upgrading the OS without first making a backup. Were something to go wrong you would lose all your files without the backup. See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

Hi I've just bought a Macbook pro (2010) I bought it as I needed an older one running snow leopard. Its running on 10.6.4 but I need it with 10.6.1 or 10.6.2, does anyone know if I can install 10.6.1 or 2 on my Macbook??????
This is because I have a copy of Protools I want to run on it and it has to be 10.6.1 or 10.6.2
    Help I'm desperate!!

The 2010 MBPs came installed with either 10.6.3, or 10.6.4 later in their lifespan. Earlier versions of the OS may not have the correct drivers for the Mac's hardware.
Ultimately, you might be better off upgrading your copy of Pro Tools, or updating the Mac to Yosemite and running Logic Pro X.

  • How can I enable Mac OS 10.6.4 to run OS Classic scanning software?

    Hi there.
Just wondering how I can enable Mac OS 10.6.4 to run an OS Classic compatible scanning program?
    Is this at all possible?
(I have a scanner that I've used for years, and the software to run it, however, it's Classic OS software, which I've been able to run on OS 10.4. But since upgrading to OS 10.6, I'm not sure I can use it.)
    Cheers.

Basically, you can't: Intel Macs and Leopard don't support Classic. There is a program called Sheepshaver which is in effect an OS9 emulator: but it's a major hassle to get it working, not least because you have to find a PowerMac ROM image and you may find that difficult.
You would do better to try to find some compatible scanner software. Try Image Capture (in your Applications folder) for a start - it might recognize the scanner. Otherwise try VueScan.

  • Can I install Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6?

I have a Apple iBook G4 (mid 2005) running Mac OS X Tiger. Can I install Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 on this Mac or can you only install Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 on Macs that are already running Leopard?

    Hi Leet ...
If you have an OS X Leopard install disk of any type,
That not fully correct ... to install OS X Leopard yuo will need full retail DVD or CD. These are the Black ones with a Big X on it.
Be care full by providing information that could corse issues or even damages on a Mac.

  • Running Mac OS X Leopard Server on iMac

    Hi,
I am totally new in Apple World, Can I run Mac OS X Leopard Server on intel iMac?
    Simon Zarate

    This configuration works.
(For some cases of upgrades, you might need to use a documented upgrade path, where you slide Mac OS X Server files onto the iMac. Details are around; look for the meta-package path and related. Here are the [10.4 upgrade details|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302960], and I expect some similar technical notes might well exist for 10.5, and details are probably in the Mac OS X Server 10.5 upgrade manual, too.)
You may or may not need Mac OS X Server here.
I tend to try to partition user activity from server activity; servers and services tend to be mostly- or always-on, where client boxes come and go, power up or down, lack UPS, etc. Servers get dedicated storage and communications, UPS devices, etc. More cautious upgrades, etc. Server also means you don't have ready access to Time Machine and such; that you have to deal with backups yourself.
If you've never run a server, it's kind of the "deep end of the computing pool", too. There's a whole lot more to deal with, in terms of set-up, operations and other aspects of the platform. As nice as it is, the Mac OS X Server environment still requires management and upkeep.
If it's an internal project (and not exposed to the open internet), you could just load [MAMP|http://mamp.info] onto Mac OS X and move on to the next issue. MAMP provides MySQL, Apache and php.
I'd suggest that you get going with Mac OS X. Then decide if you need a server, and -- if you need always-on, look to something akin to Xserve box. (If you're unsure if you need a server, Occam's Razor says you're probably not ready for a server.)
