Can Mac Pro run OS 10.5 server as if it was a xserve?

My step-dad is getting an Apple server for his business. He was wondering if he could just run the OS 10.5 server off of a mac pro. Also if you can run OS 10.5 server on a mac pro, would there be a difference between how it would run on a xserve?

Hi
You can run OSX Server on any qualifying hardware you like. Regardless of which hardware you choose it will run the same. What load is placed on the server in terms of services, data throughput and network access would be handled to a large degree by the hardware chosen. An XServe is dedicated server hardware. A MacPro is a high-end workstation with enough about it to perform a similar role.
If the business involves hundreds of users transferring large amounts of data across a fast network then go for hardware that is built to handle that load. If the business is primarily office based with a small user base (5-10 people) then a MacPro would be more than adequate.
If all that is wanted is an internal mail server serving mail for the same amount of people and nothing else then a macmini would more than fit the bill. If by windows networking you mean 'can PCs connect to it?', the answer is yes.

  • Can Mac Pro run AHCI under Windows?  No native command queuing?

It seems that Mac Pro runs AHCI under OS X.
Under Windows Vista 32/64 or XP 32/64, some reason AHCI cannot be enabled. It seems to only run legacy IDE mode. Even with modern HD, Mac Pro can not seems to take advantage of AHCI benefits such as hot-plugging and native command queuing. Does Apple thinks that native command queuing is necessary feature under OS X but not under Windows?
Even with installing AHCI driver using F6 during Windows installation, AHCI mode cannot be obtained.
Is there a simple way to enable AHCI mode besides modifying the grub bootloader as some suggested in forum? Or is it not possible until Apple modifies BIOS CSM or allows EFI modification? It seems that Apple wont address this issue with firmware update since Intel Mac Pros have been available for years now.
Any suggestion of enabling AHCI under windows XP / Vista will be welcomed.

HD Tune wont expect to show any change with or without NCQ.
NCQ will show advantage in server environment or heavy multi-tasking environment, not on I/O meter. NCQ may even slow some game playing in some instance.
AHCI adds other stuff like hotswapping or other modern goodies, not just NCQ.
Mac Pro has Intel chip / controller capable of AHCI and RAID (well pseudo Intel Matrix RAID) only if Apple allows us to enble it in EFI.

  • Can Mac Pro run off a modified sine wave inverter safely?

I was looking into getting a car inverter for an upcoming road trip.
The posts that I was reading said a pure sine wave inverter was the best. Unfortunately the cost is really up there. A modified sine wave inverter is about a 1/4th of the cost. Some blogs mentioned the modified version works with newer computers, however they were not specific.
    Needing some nerdy help!

If you are producing 110 volts to supply the computer's AC adaptor, then it should be OK.
I would verify with the inverter's manufacturer that it is suitable for use with computers and their power adaptors. Also, be sure the inverter provides adequate power.

  • Can the Mac Pro run Window XP (booth camp) and be used as a MAc OS server

    Hi There
Can the Mac Pro run Window XP (booth camp) and be used as a MAc OS server in the same time?
I am a small business and I was thinking of using the new mac pro for a new workstation on my studio and to also use it as a server for 5 work others stations. Is that possible? Or I am asking a bit to much work load to do for the Mac Pro?
Can the Mac Pro can run under Window XP and Autocad and still be accessed by other workstation whilst working on the cad software? Is booth camp will slow the machine like Virtual PC?
IS the MAc Pro can manage file hosting website with PHP and mySQL capabilites?

  • Can I use Mac Pro as a Mainframe to serve 10 PCs?

I need to furnish a Mac lab, and I thought if I can use a Mac Pro with 12 core, to serve 10 PCs.
Anybody can help me in this issue?
    Thanks...

Mac OS X Server does not require a lot of compute power, it requires a lot of high-speed I/O. A separate Boot Drive, multiple data drives (mirrored RAID optional), and Gigabit Ethernet connections to the Workstations.
A Mini bears consideration, but its laptop-type drives may not provide adequate speed if you intend to keep all user files on the Server.
Time Machine can be used to back up the Server drives, and therefore all the User files, automatically from the central location of the Server.
One pleasant side effect of all user files on the Server is that any workstation can go out for service without taking any User files with it. And any User can use any workstation, since their files are instantly available once they connect to the Server.

  • HT1338 Can I upgrade my Intel Xeon MAC PRO running OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5.8?

Can I upgrade my Intel Xeon MAC PRO running OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5.8?

Yes. You can actually upgrade it all the way to Lion should you so wish, although you would need to first purchase and install Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would skip Leopard as it's more expensive and obsolete. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD at any Apple retailer - $29.00. You can update it by downloading Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. The use the App Store to purchase and download Lion should you choose to do so - $30.00.
I would consider expanding your RAM to at least 4 GBs or more especially if you decide to upgrade to Lion. Before upgrading see the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • Connection getting lost on Mac Pro running mavericks

We have replaced one of our old Xserve fileservers with a new Mac Pro running Mavericks.  This is one of four systems we use to reduce dense geospatial data into descriptive assets.  Up to 20 iMac workstations can be accessing data on this server simultaneously.  The problem we are experiencing since, the switch to the new fileserver, is that the workstations seem to be randomely loosing their connection to the data.  We don't have this problem with any of our four other systems configured as Xserves, running Lion.  Any suggestions or experiences that would suggest a place to start looking?

Figured it out - there was an app that was being run at login and the hide this app button was checked on that app. The app has a dialogue box that pops up when the app starts. Because this box was being hidden it was impossible to click "OK" so the system kept trying to pop up that dialogue box, causing the app that was being used to shift to the background.

  • I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 and I want to replace a drive and install Lion

I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 with dual core intel 2.66 with 13 GB ram. I want to replace my startup disk 250GB (which has all my apps) but has been lagging ( I thinks it's an original drive) with the new HD in bay 2 (4 T drive) which I installed this week. I tried to install lion onto it and it said I needed a newer version 10.7.3-I have time machine as my backup on an external. All the bays are full and I'd like to trade them out sooner or later to get more room for movies, etc. The last OSX disk I have is Snow Leopard and that was rejected as not new enough. Can someone help me with info on installing Lion on the new drive. I know how to make it the startup disk after, but I can't seem to load 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 (not supported on my older mac pro.) Thanks,
    ANNE Z

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
    Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

  • I have a sony handy cam model HDR-HC1 and a mac pro running osx10.9.3, are they compatible? as far as downloading movies from my handy cam. thanks in advance

i have a sony handy cam model HDR-HC1 and a mac pro running osx10.9.3, are they compatible? as far as downloading movies from my handy cam. thanks in advance. If not, is there a different route i can take to get those recordings in to my mac pro?

See if the cam shows up under Devices in the Image Capture app.
Image Capture is located in your Applications folder.
Launch Image Capture then connect the camera.
The camera should show up under Devices top left side of the Image Capture window.
Now look at the bottom left side of the window. Click the: Connecting this (device) opens: pop up menu and select an application to import your photos.
You can also select a folder to import photos from the Import To: pop up menu.
Selet the photos you want to import then click Import or Import All on the right.
