Can MacBook be used in programming/networking classes?

Can anyone tell me if there would be a problem using the new MacBook/MacBook Pro for programming and networking classes? I'm just getting started in these classes so I don't really know what hardware/software needs I will have in higher-level courses. I need to get a laptop that has XP and my preference would be to get a new MacBook/MacBook Pro - we have a lot of money invested in mac products at home. I don't want to get into a situation, though, in which I find that, 1 year from now, the new MacBook is problematic when used in intermediate/advanced level computer classes. My pocket-book can barely afford 1 laptop, let alone two!
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

SFU and Cygwin are shells that make Windows "act like" it is Unix. Cygwin is one of the first things I install on Windows. However, MacOS X already is Unix, the real thing, so you don't need that.
Nobody uses telnet anymore. They are all to worried about security. Everything is ssh. And yes, the Macbook has both.
You wouldn't want to use a .NET clone like Mono to try to learn .net. You want to use the real thing. For that, you need Windows. You can run Windows on the Mac through boot camp or Parallels.
The thing is, you probably don't need Windows. Most introductor networking and programming classes use Unix, so a Macbook would be perfect. If, for whatever reason, a class requires Windows (they will sometimes), and they won't let you use a Mac (they won't sometimes), you can still use your Macbook.

    Yes.
    The only difference is the installation method and the ownership verification. The program still is installed on and runs from your local machine. You only have to hook up to the internet every 60-90 days to verify ownership.
    From the FAQ
    Do I need to be online to access my desktop apps?
    No, the desktop applications in Creative Cloud, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, are installed directly on your computer, so you don’t need an ongoing Internet connection to use them.
    An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your apps, but you can use the apps in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop apps will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days.
    Annual members can use the apps for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode."

  • I purchased Illustrator 8.0 on ebay and apparently it is not compatable with windows 7, is there anything I can do to use this program?

    I purchased illustrator 8.0 on ebay and apparently it is not compatible with windows 7.  Is there anything I can do to use this program?

    Beverly,
    Yes.
    You may need to run the computer in XP mode to install it (you may try in normal mode first). Here is how:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7
    Once installed, you should be able to get it to run with the PC in normal mode as follows (first run):
    1) RightClick the shortcut;
    2) Click Properties;
    3) Click Compatibility;
    4) Tick Run this program in Compatibility mode for, then select XP in the dropdown list;
    5) Start AI8.
    After that, you can just DoubleClick the shortcut.
    Hopefully, you bought it legally (with a genuine, non registered serial number, or had a licence transfer).

  • Can Time Capsule uses iPhone 3G network?

    I have TC and iPhone, mac pro and PC at my home.
    TC is using as the hub for mac and PC.
    iPhone is using 3G network.
    would like to know can TC connects to my iPhone, and sharing the 3G network with my Macbook pro and PC?
    Thanks all.

    Hello nycross. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    We have wireless security cameras that can only join B/G networks with WEP security. Can I still use a Time Capsule as my router?
    Yes.
    I see that TC can join a WEP network, but can it create one? If so, how?
    The TC can provide three variations of WEP: Transitional, WEP 40-bit, & WEP 128-bit. To get the latter two options, the TC must be configured to operate in a non-"n" Radio Mode. That is, it would have to operate in either the 802.11a, b, or g modes.

  • Can this be used as a network HD?

    im sure time capsule can be used as a network HD....but I dont see it anywhere on the description page...if its only for backing up then its a bit useless

    It indeed can be used as a network HD.
    "Time Capsule with Time Machine in Leopard is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn’t mean Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can’t enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily."

  • Can Macbook be used as router?

    I have DSL internet with a Netgear WGR614 wireless router setup throughout my house. I have the DSL hooked up to my Dell desktop with another Dell laptop, my Macbook, and my Playstation 3 hooked up wirelessly. I was wondering if I could use my Macbook as sort of a router for my Playstation 3?
    I have installed Linux on my PS3 and as of this time it is unable to support wireless interenet on the PS3 and the PS3 is also just generally faster when connected wired when online gaming. Seeing as how my Netgear is in another room I was hoping I could pick up the wireless signal with my Macbook and then run the ethernet cable from my Macbook to my PS3. Is this possible? Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    It can be made to work. Probably the easiest way would be to connect your MacBook to the wireless network, turn on Internet Sharing from AirPort to Built-in Ethernet, then run a cable between the MacBook and PS3. This inserts an extra layer of IP address translation (which you and the PS3 probably won't notice), but takes just a few clicks to set up. This can probably be done without using Internet Sharing, but that's probably more hassle than it's worth. You'd need to set up a subnet between the MacBook and PS3 (with static IP addresses), and add a static route to the WGR614 to make it aware of the additional subnet that's handled by the MacBook. OS X may require a low level setting through Terminal to enable routing through network interfaces.
    But what you're proposing is to use an $1100+ computer to do the job of a device that can be had for $90 or less. The cheaper device will probably do a better job of it, and take less time to set up.
    Google for a Linksys WGA54G Wireless Gaming Adapter and find the best price. It does exactly what you're asking, in a much smaller package. It claims to need a PC to set it up, though. I'd imagine that Netgear, Belkin, and other bigger names in home networking make a similar device.

  • Why can't I use different programs on different computers?

    Yesterday we bought two CC subscriptions for me and my colleague. We both also work from home sometimes so I replaced my CS6 software at home with the updated software for the programs we use (Photoshop, Bridge, Illustrator and InDesign). For Acrobat, we stick to Acrobat Pro 9 because our Pitstop Pro license would be too expensive too upgrade for the new versions.
    So when another non-prepress colleague today asked if it was possible to add the company letterhead on top of the digital invoices, I thought: why not install Acrobat XI on his computer since neither me or my colleague uses it anyway - neither at work or at home. To my surprise, Adobe does NOT allow this??? It seems CC ties the entire subscription to computers instead of separate software to computers because the minute I tried to activate the software, CC complained and activated "trial mode" on Acrobat XI saying I was already logged in at the maximum amount of computers.
    This doesn't seem right to me - surely it's the amount of times a program gets used that counts and in my case, Acrobat XI doesn't get used at all so why aren't we allowed to use it on an extra PC? We pay for the program after all!!!!

    Suppose you and friend go to an all-you-can-eat buffet and each of you pays the rate for an adult buffet.  Several items in the serving area you don't eat or don't like, but kids or friends back home do, so when you're finished with your meal you ask for a box to take home the unsampled items at the buffet for others back home.  And when the establishment says, No, you go home and post an angry review about how they are unfair and monopolistic and won't let you take as much food as you want home with you for what you paid for the buffet.  Maybe you do pack your bag with extra food and feel entitled to it and even plan your family's meal budget around how much you can steal from the buffet, but I'm guessing not, and just accept buffet pricing without bad feelings toward the restaurant.
    You want three people to share 2 licenses.  That's against the rules.  Rules that seem reasonable to me.  You're getting many Adobe applications for the price of 2.5 applications.  A single application is $20/month while the full suite costs $50/month.  You are welcome to buy each application you use for $20/month and have your third colleague use Acrobat for $20/month.
    Adobe is not going to let you use any or all the applications in the suite for the price of 2.5 applications and also allow you to give away the unused applications to others, letting them avoid paying their own licensing fees.
    To resume the buffet metaphor, Adobe has priced their all-you-can-eat (use) buffet (suite) at the cost of 2.5 entrées (apps) and doesn't allow you to take home (give away) leftover items (programs) for others to eat (use).  You are welcome to buy each entrée at its own price and take home as many as you buy and let others eat them.
    If you feel Adobe is making too much money with their buffet and entrée pricing models, then you're welcome to buy Adobe stock and get some of that extra profit for yourself.

  • Can macbook pro use all pc products?

    I am about to buy a macbook pro and someone told me that the new duo chip would allow me to play games that previously could only be played on pc's or use my creative zen vision m which will not work on a mac. can the macbook run like a pc with windows xp??
    -jake

    In addition to Kyle’s info, which is correct, you can also use Parallels and run Windows or other PC operating systems concurrently with Mac OS (rather than dual-boot, as with Boot Camp). While this is not an adequate solution for games and other software dependent on good 3D video acceleration hardware, it works well for most other kinds of software.

  • Can Time Capsule use another local network for backup?

    Our LAN has a a separate wireless network solely for backup. The machines on the network use ethernet for routine operations and wireless to access backup disks. Can a Time Capsule access this backup LAN or must the machines all tune into its own wireless network?

    Yes, you can. Just mount the disk you want to backup onto and select it in the Time Machine preferences. The backups are deadly slow wirelessly, so you'll want to backup with your mac getting it's internet over FireWire from the computer with the disk attached. But restoring works well wirelessly. As you can probably tell by my description here, I backup to a network volume myself. I do know that you can't backup to the same backup scheme both with a local disk and network volume (same disk).
    Hope this helps,
    Alex

    Your friend Zoe

    Hi,
    There is no java class for reading event log in windows, so we can do one thing we can use windows system 32 VBS script to read the system log .
    The output of this command can be read using java program....
    we can use java exec for executing this system32 vbs script.
    use the below program and pass the command "eventquery"
    plz refer cscript,wscript
    import java.io.*;
    public class CmdExec {
    public static void main(String argv[]) {
    try {
    String line;
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("Command");
    BufferedReader input =
    new BufferedReader
    (new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    while ((line = input.readLine()) != null) {
    System.out.println(line);
    input.close();
    catch (Exception err) {
    err.printStackTrace();
    This sample program will list all the system log information....

  • Fork in process chain using ABAP program

    Hello everyone.
    I need a fork in my chain. Depending on the values in some db table I will make a decision: do some process or skip and go further. The only solution I can see is using ABAP program. But unfortunately It doesn't return status. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

    Hi,
    You have few process to run after the abap program. So make all those process as a different chain, and at the end of the ABAP program include a function module to trigger this chain, based on your condition.
    If you like this idea, please revert for more information.
    Hope this helps.
    Thank you,

    Steps to change “Bookmarks.html” file in “omni.ja”:

    - Make the changes you want to the extracted files.
    - Open the original “omni.ja” file using WinRAR program.
    - Using “Add” button to replace the modified files.
    the first step when extart the file it's give me that file is corrupted only for this version (firefox 17.0.2 windows EN-US)

    There is no need to edit files in the omni.ja! archives to achieve this.

  • Can my imac use some pc conventions?

    i switched to mac a year ago.  i use a pc at work.  i have trouble going back and forth between the 2 machines.  i would like some mac features to look/act like the pc so that i can use some of my habitual movements without "stuttering".
    for example:  i would like to move the red, yellow and green (close, minimize and maximize) buttons in the upper left corner to the upper right corner where they are in the pc.  i would like to have both a delete key and a backspace key.  is there any "act like a pc" helper?  no, i don't want my mac to be a pc, only to give me an effortless translation.
    thank you

    A Mac can read PC formatted volumes. What happened, exactly, when you plugged in the USB drive?
    Perhaps the photos were not exported in a format the Mac can read. Use whatever program the PC uses to read photographs and export them as jpeg or other format.
