If you want to save a ton of money, you can do 16GB yourself for $280 and a DIY kit.

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had. Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles. I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files. Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.

iOS 5 is for iDevices, not OS X. Your iDevice would only require 10.5.8 or later. If you have a Mac with a Core Duo processor then you cannot install Lion but you can install Snow Leopard provided you have at least 1 GB of RAM installed.

Try holding down the trackpad button while starting up the PowerBook. Holding down mouse button during start up ejects the disc in the optical drive, so I'm guessing it would work the same with the button the the trackpad.

You have the original Core Duo model. 2 GBs is the most RAM you can install, so the only thing you could upgrade would be the hard drive. Doing so is not a trivial task but you can find suitable hard drives and installation tutorials at OWC.
Since yours is a Core Duo model you can upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard, but not to Lion which requires a Core 2 Duo or better.

Severe overheating of 17" MacBook Pro (2009) with 3.06 GHz processor

For around a year and a half I have been dealing with a computer that constantly overheats very quickly, presumably because I ordered a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU for my 17" MacBook Pro without realizing that it would make the surface of the computer super hot. I recently looked at the new generation of MacBook Pros and saw that the max they offer now is 2.8 GHz. Good move, Apple, but it doesn't help me feel like I didn't waste more than $3100 on a machine that constantly burns my hands.
While the computer was under warranty I complained to Apple and they replaced it with an identical model with identical overheating problems. Without any recourse that I knew of (or any other computer to use), I just kept on using it.
Now I am using applications that I did not use before that make the computer even hotter. And I can forget games -- while playing Tropico 3 in Bootcamp it got so hot that it even shut itself down. And Minecraft in OSX brought the CPU up to 225 degrees F according to smcFanControl, even with the fans at their max of 6000 rpm.
In order to use it to work I have to cover the area to the left of the trackpad with a hand cloth to keep it from burning my palms, and accidentally touching the area around the left speaker is nothing short of punishment.
Since my computer is out of warranty, Apple support does not want to have anything to do with me anymore. So I was wondering if anyone knew how to slow the CPU down in the hopes that I can work with something that does not burn my hand and make me break out into a sweat. Any tips?

I have a similar problem. Although in my case my computer (Macbook Pro 17 - 3.06ghz Core 2 Duo), isn't actually having any functioning problems .. but I worry that running the CPU's constantly around 90-100 degrees celsius can't be good for it in the long run.
It seems your model is getting even hotter than mine. I find running Logic Pro makes mine really work at high temperatures. Mostly when I work with video. And again if I'm running World of Warcraft, then the temperature rides pretty high at up to 103 Degrees.
I too have the SMC app on running the fans at maximum. For a while I've just thought that the computer simply is built to run at these temperatures .. indeed I'm sure it is. But I'm getting strange graphical 'lurches' in games now where everything appears to slow down and then catch up with itself. I'm pretty sure this is due to the graphics system being overworked, or perhaps the system CPU is getting way too hot to work properly. Have never had a system crash because of it yet .. but I fear that after a year of running my laptop as is .. that the temperature issue is finally catching up with it.
Does anyone know what the typical operating temperature of the Macbook Pro 17 inch (3.06 ghz Core 2 Duo) model is supposed to be? And i don't mean the idling temperature .. I mean the operating temperature during gaming, music creation and other high end means?
I wish there was a way to underclock the CPU just to see if that improves the temperature issue. But no one seem to know a way to do this.
Well .. you're not the only one. I do enjoy my Macbook and regardless of the temperature problem it is still the best computer I've ever had.

If you're able to afford it, I would opt for a 15.4" screen - the larger screen real estate is almost a must for Photoshop and Illustrator (and InDesign, in particular, which I assume you'll be purchasing as well - Adobe has very good educational discounts on the CS6 Design Standard package: it's horrible to try to work with two page spreads on a small monitor - even 15.4" is just barely enough).
You can get the base 15" 2012 model for $1,799 (less your student discount). It only comes with 4GB of RAM and I would upgrade that to at least 8GB, but I would not purchase the RAM upgrade from Apple. I would buy third-party RAM from Crucial or OWC and install it yourself (or have someone that is computer-savvy install it for you).

I am a university student, and for some of my projects, I am required to edit HD video, approx around 15 minutes in length and making short films. Will the macbook pro 13-inch: 2.4 GHz be able to live up to this and handle the large video files?

I use a 13" MBP for video editing and it seems to do ok. Rendering can take a while sometimes (sorta wish I would've gone with the 15" for the quad-core processor) but overall it's definitely very liveable.
chaznsc does raise a good point - the 13" display is a little small, especially when you're searching for keywords (FCPX) with the video preview and info screens open. But the 15" isn't all that much bigger. The resolution between the two isn't much different - everything is just "bigger." You don't really get much more true real estate.
When I get sick of feeling cramped I just plug in an external monitor. Problem solved I get the best of both worlds this way - 13" small and compact for using on the train or a plane, and bigger monitor when I need it.

Powermac G5 Dual Core 2.0 GHZ or Macbook Pro Dual Core 2.0 GHZ

I have a Macbook Pro Dual Core 2.0 GHZ that currently has 1 GB of RAM in it. For the most part it runs fine, but I do come into problems with it sometimes while I'm doing video editing which is my main usage for my computer. I currently run Final Cut Studio 2. Would it be worth it to sell this computer and get a Powermac G5 Dual Core 2.0 GHZ or 2.3 GHZ and upgrade the RAM to 8 GB to help my video editing run smoother? The reason why I am considering this is because I would like a computer that would work better with my video editing at a cost that I can afford. I also would like to have a firewire 800 port for my external hard drives. I rarely use my internal hard drive, so that is no factor in my decision. Currently I cannot afford a new Mac Pro, but will be buying one in about a year. I'm just trying to decide if this would be a good switch for right now. Thanks for your help.

Although I don't own a Mac Pro, rumor has it that they run video chores significantly more efficiently than do the last generation G5's. I bought my 2.3 GHz, w/the 7800 card, for $600, last November on eBay. The case wasn't cosmetically perfect (a rather nasty looking crimp on the front handle) but it has performed well running my video (EyeTV and recording) and academic (I teach math & Mathematica) needs. I picked-up extra memory (it now has 6 Gigs) pretty cheap (around $75, IIRC), from Kingston. I also took the advice of many here and got a WD 640GB HD that made a significant difference in both boot-time and opening applications. However, if you're going to get a new Mac Pro in a year, it's almost like throwing money away - the G5 will probably have its' depreciation rate decrease once the software vendors no longer continue supporting pre-Intel machines. That being said, my G5 is more than sufficient handling my present version of Mathematica - I don't think that paying $3000, or whatever it takes to get a new Mac Pro, would balance the marginal increase of utility I would get using Mathematica. If I were a video guru, I might feel differently. I thought I could give you a definitive yes, buy the G5, because I really love mine. Unless something happens, I plan on having it for at least a few years. At about $250/year, if one figures that I'll have owned it for a total of 3 years, that's less than 70¢/day. But I also value the opinions of many of the posters who have commented on the new machine's speed, compared to the 2.5 GHz Quad, say.
