Can MacBook Pro 2014 non-retina upgrade ram to 16G

I wonder if my MacBook Pro 2014 non-retina can be upgraded myself to have 16G ram. Do anybody know that?

I assume that you have a 13" (2012) model.  If so you may install 16 GB RAM.
http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MD101LL/A&step=config
Even though Apple says 8, the MBP will recognize 16 GB.  The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
ciao.

  • PLEASE HELP me select new internal hard drive for Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina)

    Good afternoon.
I just bought a Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina) 15 inch from a friend.  I think it is running Mountain Lion (has not been upgraded to Mavericks yet), and has iLife on it.  It came with the stock 500 gb 5400 rpm internal hard drive.  At home, I only have the Snow Leopard OS installation Cds and a copy of iLife 2011 installation Cds.  I am going to buy 16 gb of RAM from Other World Computing to install.
I want to replace the hard drive with a 1 tb hard drive, preferably something that is $100 or less.
I talked to Other World Computing (OWC) and looked at the Data Doubler Option to replace the optical drive with a Solid State drive, but decided that for now I want to keep the optical drive inside the computer for portability issues.
I know that Solid State drives are better, but they are still too small, and I want the ease and portability of a 1 tb size INSIDE my computer.
Initially I was going to order this from Other World Computing: 1.0TB 2.5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 9.5mm Notebook Drive 32MB Cache. *'New' Factory Replacement with 2+ Year HGST Warranty*    As of April 4, 2014 it's on sale for $79
But then I started reading some of the discussions online and thought maybe I should get a hybrid solid state drive?
I saw on Amazon the Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014  It's on sale for $94.
But according to some reviews, this Seagate has a platter that is only 5400rpm, unlike the previous Seagate Momentum that has a platter speed of 7200rpm.
How reliable are the Seagate, versus a Toshiba or Western Digital or Hitachi or something else?
Here are my questions about replacing the hard drive:
    1.  Is a hybrid solid state drive going to need some kind of special formatting after I put it into the macbook so that I can put the operating system on it?
    2.  Is a "normal" platter hard drive more reliable than a hybrid solid state drive?
    3.  Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
    4.  Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer.  Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
    5.  If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
    6.  If I want to do the "Data Doubler" option in the future and add a normal Solid State drive into my computer, will it have trouble interacting with the 1 tb hybrid solid state drive?
I would love to get some recommendations about the smartest option to upgrade my hard drive with something that will be fast (I edit lots of photos) and large (1 tb) that isn't going to cost too much.  I don't know much about the different brands or options (and there are so many listed in tons of online reviews), that I got really overwhelmed and confused by the info out there.
I would really appreciate any help and advice.  I've never switched out a hard drive before.
    PLEASE HELP !!!  Thanks!
Here is the "About this Mac" Info:
    Macbook Pro 15-in Mid 2012
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,1
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Software: OS x 10.8.5
Storage (Hard drive): APPLE HDD ST500LM012 Media, Rotational, SATA, GPT (GUID Partition Table)

    1.  Is a hybrid solid state drive going to need some kind of special formatting after I put it into the macbook so that I can put the operating system on it?
The boot drive, regardless of what it is, needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  This is standard with OS X.
    2.  Is a "normal" platter hard drive more reliable than a hybrid solid state drive?
There are arguments pro and con.  Bottom line, SSD's and hybrid drives are still quite expensive per GB than standard hard drives.  If you have the bucks and are a speed demon, go ahead.   I have better use for my money.   Standard hard drives are mechanical and may wear out over time.  But even though SSDs are not mechancial, they can still go bad and ultimately they even have a limit to their write capacity.  The jury is still out on this debate.
    3.  Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
    No
    4.  Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer.  Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
You can physically put the hard drive in but probably not install Snow Leopard on this MBP.
The mid-2012 MacBookPro9,1 models came with Lion 10.7.3 (11D2097) preinstalled.   It is very unlikely you would be able to install Snow Leopard on it.  Historically you cannot install a version of OS X that is earlier than the version that came with your Mac (even if you replace the hard drive).
    5.  If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
Not via Snow Leopard on this MBP.  See my response to #4.
    6.  If I want to do the "Data Doubler" option in the future and add a normal Solid State drive into my computer, will it have trouble interacting with the 1 tb hybrid solid state drive?
No.  They are completely independent of each other; they are just independent storage units (drives) and their RAM does not interact.

  • How to clean Macbook Pro (unibody,non-Retina) Screen?

I have bought a Macbook Pro 13inch non-Retina model. However I have not put any screen guard over my screen. Now I found some strains on my screen. I have tried with the micro-fiber cloth but not all the strains gone. Now i am really helpless...
I need some suggestions how can i clean my macbook's screen perfectly?

    Yes, see here for details

    HANDLING  TIPS
    Cleaning Your MacBook
Use a very lightly damp, soft (if you can squeeze the cloth very tightly and even a drop comes out, its still too damp), lint-free cloth to clean the computer’s exterior. Avoid getting moisture in any openings and be very careful not to get the damp cloth around the trackpad edges or around the inside edge between the monitor and its bezel. Do not spray any type of liquid directly on the computer. Do not use sprays, solvents, or abrasives; do not attempt to use any solvents on the LCD display either directly (especially!) or indirectly. There is never any call to use any type of lens cleaning solvents on the screen of your LCD display. Again, do not spray any liquid directly on the screen.
Dont press on your LCD screen or spray it !

There is never any call to use any type of lens cleaning solvents on the screen of your LCD display. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen. Avoid any touching or pressure upon your LCD screen.

  • Decent earphones for macbook pro 13 non-retina

I am using Apple EarPods for my iPad and they sound great with my iPad but earpods have a low volume for the MacBook Pro 13 non-retina..
    Please suggest some earphones..

You mean good earbuds.     Really good and cheap ones are the Sony brand sold at electronic stores
Cost about $10,  they have silicone ends that stay in your ears, the Apple earbuds are hard and uncomfortable and do not stay in your ears, which is why I never used them.
    LIke these:

I have 4 pair of them, loud and reliable and they never fall out

  • Brand new Macbook Pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram lagging in the simplest tasks

I received a brand new 13 inch macbook pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram (16 gb) about two weeks ago. I was expecting it to do tasks faster than its predecessors (the macbook pro which came directly before it, which my father owns, and the early 2009 which is now a family computer), but became dissapointed when it began crashing basically as soon as i started using final cut pro, and ever since it has been lagging everywhere else! I have check my activity monitor regulary due to this issue and have noticed "kernel_task" taking a large percentage of CPU (when im not using the computer all that much around 10%) and it uses 1.5gb of ram upwards constantly without fail! I am aware that this is the operating system so i dont really want to fiddle around with it but it does sound a little bit high to me. Originally it was slightly tougher work on final cut that would crash it, hence why i haven't seriously questioned it until now, but currently i cannot even move my curser around without getting the spinning beach ball of death! Please help me!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Does macbook pro 2012 non retina support 16gb?

Does the macbook pro (mid June 2012, non retina) support ram of 16gb?
Will it be capable of it or would it slow the computer down.
Even though the website of apple says that its maximum capacity is 8gb,
what happens if I install 16gb into it?

You are welcome. The models have been tested by outside RAM vendors to operate with 16gB. There may have been an update since that eating, but doubtful.
You can check at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade to see if they recommend more RAM.

  • Macbook Air 2014 Refurb or Macbook Pro 2012 Non-Retina Refurb?

    Hi,
I'm a freshman in high school and need a laptop to bring to school. I'm debating the above. On the Air side, it has a longer battery life and is newer, but it's not upgradable. On the Pro side, it's more 'powerful' (GHz) I think it has turbo boost to 3.1 GHz. I have a Programming and Engineering class and want to run Parallels smoothly. I need parallels for Visual Basic and Java, maybe Inventor. I hope to use until college; Just a last side note, On the AIr I'm looking at the 8gb Ram model, so both MBs are $929

EDIT: I found beta drivers for the MacBook Pro 2012 NVIDIA GPU and one of the fixes is V-Sync problems, which is exactly my issue. However, when I try to install it, it will not work because it says no compatible hardware is found, even though it says it supports GeForce 650M GPUs, which is it pretty much saying I need to get the update from Apple. So, I guess my real problem is... What's the holdup Apple?

  • I am considering buying a new Macbook Pro 13" non-retina either the 2.5 GHz or the 2.9 GHz version to run Logic Pro X. My question is whether there is a noticeable difference in how well Logic Pro X works with the 2.9 GHz model vs the 2.5 GHz one.

Is there a noticeable performance improvement with running Logic Pro X on a 2.9 GHz model vs the 2.5 GHz one and yes I would have 8GB of RAM installed on the 2.5 GHz one if I were to buy it. Thanks!

My buying advice - the 'entry-level' new 15" MacBook Pro. Take a look at the specs. It's a wonderful machine - and you can upgrade RAM and HD to fit your needs without voiding the warranty. I don't know of any apps that I currently run that can't take advantage of the quad-core, and almost everything is 64-bit now.
I'd used the money you saved from not buying an out-dated 17" and put it into software. If you're transitioning from Windows that can add up quickly (which isn't to say you can't run your Windows apps using Boot Camp or a VM like Parallels.
Just my opinion - but if I could buy anything I wanted right now, I'd go with one of the upgraded 15" non-Retina MacBook Pros.

  • Can Macbook pro's hardware be upgraded

    Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if I am able to upgrade my Macbook Pro.
I would like to add a graphics card and potentially increase RAM and HD Space.
If it is possible how would I go about doing it?

Only two things can be upgraded on any non-Retina MacBook Pro: RAM & Hard Drive...nothing else. You can start here for choices/instructions:

Good place to purchase, they have tools & videos.

  • Help!  MacBook Pro 15" non retina?

I finally saved up enough money to purchase a MacBook pro and now I find out that they are discontinued?  The last time I saw them on this website (or at BBuy) was in December.
Is there anywhere that anyone knows of where I can go purchase one? This was to be my first Mac purchase, since I am done with windows products.  Apple management must be off of their rockers to think that I am paying over $1900 for a MacBook retina (with the same specs as the non-retina).  I saw a great one at BBuy about 1-2 months ago that was 750g, 8g ram for about $1300.
I don't understand the difference between Mountain or Lion or whatever else there is, I just wanted a basic 15", 500g (possibly 750) 4g ram (possibly 8) with USB ports and an HDMI slot and new, I do not want a used or refurbished.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is just very frustrating that I finally reached a goal to purchase something that I have wanted for a while and then when I am finally ready I find out that goal is almost doubled because a product was discontinued.
Welcome to the world of Apple!  The switch to SSD is a big part of the increase, it makes some sense as the HDD is by a big margin the most falable component.
Although the initial outlay is indeed high, the lifespan of Macs is significantly greater than windows, and the build quality superior.  Doubt if you would be using a Windows laptop bought today in 6 years.  Chances are you will still be doing so with a Macbook.
I was afraid I would have to purchase a HDMI adapter, I could have swore that I saw a MacBook with one built-in that was not a retina.
Not that I know of.  The 13" and 15" Retina models both come with HDMI but not the 13" non retina.

  • Blotch on my 13 inch macbook pro screen non retina

i have a black blotch on my 13 inch non retina macbook pro mid 2012. the warranty expires in august. Since I requested for this mac from my relatives, i dont have a reciept but the waranty shows on apple's site. i paid for the mac and i live in a country where there is no apple authorized dealer. the closest i can get to is malaysia. will the warranty be covered there. if yes  then will they repair it or will there be an option for refund???
i really need help with this

    Apple warranty coverage is international.
The AppleCare Protection Plans for Mac and iPod provide global repair coverage. If you take your Apple hardware with you when you travel and happen to need repair service, you can either go to an Apple Retail Store or contact Apple for information on how to obtain service. Service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested. Service options, parts availability, and response time vary according to country. Thanks for your help.

    Hi KengShengzim,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article linked below provides a ton of great suggestions that should help you resolve the issue that you described.
    OS X: About kernel panics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
For OS X Lion and earlier, follow these steps:
Press and hold the Power button for several seconds to turn off your Mac.
    Turn on your Mac.
As soon as your Mac starts up, hold down the Shift key to start up with a Safe Boot into Safe Mode. Note: If you are using a third-party external keyboard and cannot start with a Safe Boot, try using an Apple keyboard instead.
If your Mac has another kernel panic starting up, or while in Safe Mode, go to the "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" section below.
If your Mac starts up without a kernel panic after a Safe Boot, restart by choosing Apple menu () > Restart…, then let it start up normally.
Important: If the Mac has another kernel panic within a few weeks, refer to the "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" section below.
Note: If the hardware and software on the Mac checks out as OK, yet recurring kernel panics still occur, it is possible that something on the network is sending the Mac malformed network packets. In these situations, check the devices on the network. Make sure the router's firmware is up-to-date, and that the router is functioning. Refer to the router's manufacturer for service and support.

    I hope this helps.

  • My USB drive won't show up on my MacBook Pro (2012 non retina)

Okay, so I have 2 Macs.  2012 MacBook Pro, and a PPC iMac G4. I want to load music onto my USB drive, but it dosen't show up on my MacBook Pro. My iMac can read the USB without a problem, but the MacBook Pro will not. Iv'e made sure to check off everything in Finder Preferences, and also reveal everything in the Finder Side Bar, but still nothing will happen. I even tried looking for it in Disk Utility, and still nothing. Please Help.

Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Dual monitors on my new macBook pro 15" non retina with OS 10.8.4

I have 2 x Dell 24" LED monitors left over from my work Dell laptop set up and i have now switched to an Apple macbook pro 15" but need to be able to connect the best way possible to these monitors which have DVI and VGA connections, ive seen so many and USB3 seems the way to go but no real thumbs up reviews, this must not be just me that needs this, can anyone help?

    RajatTyagi,
the most common cause of that message is an incomplete download. For example, try downloading the standalone Flash Player installer from here. If it doesn’t run on your MacBook Pro, what size is the downloaded disk image file?
