Can MacPro (1,1) address a 2TB internal HD?

Hello All,
On my MacPro (1,1) recently needed to simply format a disk used elsewhere as part of a RAID device (when returning it to the manufacturer, I so wanted to wipe the data!). The manufacturer had given me the OK to disassemble the RAID device and install all the SATA drives one by one into my MacPro to erase the information. MacPro could see and display the drive in System Information but not in Disk Utility.
I concluded that this was an issue in addressing a larger volume. I had 5 HD's to format, none were visible in Disk Utility. Just following up on the limitations of this MacPro. Since I did not have a handy 3.5" SATA/USB drive cabinet this was the only available option to do the job and MacPro let me down.
So, what is the largest SATA disk addressable by this MacPro- 1TB, 1.5TB?
Any easy way to expand it- perhaps an add on card?
Is running a larger volume it a power issue? Kind of doubt that as I don't think that the larger drives suck any more power than the smaller ones. Rather suspect the support chips on the mother board weren't designed or programmed for that size volume.
I will follow this discussion up with the the fine folks at OWC who seem pretty knowledgable when it comes to upgrades. As HD technology expands, looks the top end of the Mac Pro has been exceeded. Too bad, because my MacPro is still running well.
I've heard of kits that allow internally mounted drives to be RAIDED but this is not something I want to do. My ultimate goal is an external RAIDed backup system and proper backup software to protect my four Macs, preferably running on my Mini. Tried one brand (LaCie 5Big Network Disk) and it was not up to the task- failed out of the box big time. That's for another discussion.
Henry

I concluded that this was an issue in addressing a larger volume.
There is no basis for such a conclusion. Macs have been able to support drives over 2.2TB (including those with 4K block size) since 10.4.6.
There is a long history of Macs NOT stomping on pre-existing foreign file systems, to keep users from destroying perfectly good data that the Mac does not understand. If your drive does not have either an MBR partition Map, or a GUID partition Map, it may be seen as "foreign".
Perhaps reFit or third-party utilities would be able to write a better partition table that the Mac could understand better.

  • 2TB Internal HD on Mac Pro?

Guys, I need another internal HD for my Mac Pro 8 Core 2.26, 2009 model.
I'm getting conflicting information as regard to how much TB my Mac can handle.
I use it predominantly for Video Editing so it will need to be fast and hold a lot of media.
Can my Mac Pro take a 2TB internal drive? I have my eyes on this one

Any opinions or better suggestions, please?

There is no confliction information. Just bad marketing. Apple does make the mistake of publishing what they have tested at the time, then never update that.
GPT can work with massively sized drive volumes.
SATA drives now have some SATA III features, which might, just as when SATA II came out.
WD Green drives and SMART data are handled differently.
3TB drives have gotten some reviews. 2TB drives like WD Black and Green are very popular.
Whether you want to go internal, or add a controller to support a large RAID array is up to you.
    There is a newer WD Black 2TB WD2001FASS £138.50

And for half that price there is the Green 2TB (for archive or backup, but on PCs are very popular even for media drive).

The Apple article will transfer everything from one volume to another.  Doing what you want is not simple, unfortunately.
See Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume, especially scenario #1 in the gray box there.
That's just recently reworded and revised; please advise if it's not clear or you have problems with it.

  • 2tb internal drive macbook pro?

I have a macbook pro 13 inch from spring 2010
Will this be able to handle a 2tb internal hard drive? it is 3.5"
also can i put in 16gb of ram?
And is it possible to buy an extended battery like 12 cell or something, so my mac has double the life?
    Thanks soo Much!!

The only batteries are those provided by Apple or Newertech.com and other third-party vendors you can google. You won't find anything with so-called extended life exceeding more than a few percent. Apple's laptop batteries are not quite like the cheap stuff made for PC laptops.

  • Can't move email address contact information into sub-folder.

I created a "top level" address folder named "Personal Address Book". Under that top level, I created a sub-folder named "Family". I entered the name, email address, and work telephone information for my son. That data was then copied (not moved) to the sub-folder named "Family."
I then entered his wife's name and telephone number (don't have her email address data) into the "Personal Address Book" I am unable to get that data copied to the "Family" sub-folder.
    What is going wrong?
A user should have the ability to either MOVE or COPY the information from the top level folder to only one, or more than one, sub-folders. This would allow the user to have a relatively short list in the top level folder, and the information organized in the sub-folders without duplication.

Let's back up a bit. A Mailing List is not a subfolder, despite its appearance. You can't MOVE a Contact into a Mailing List, but you can COPY a Contact into a Mailing List. So any Contact in a Mailing List must exist in the parent address book.
If you don't habitually send a message to multiple recipients then you haven't any need for Mailing Lists.
OTOH you have suggested that in fact you may wish to send the same message to various government officers, in which case a Mailing List may be useful. You can of course create multiple mailing addresses; so if you write to A, B and C on tax matters, you can create a Mailing List named Tax constining A, B and C. If you write to B, C and D on defense matters, then you create a Mailing List named Defense containing B, C and D. If you frequently want to bombard everyone indiscrminately with the same message, then create another Mailing List called All and containing A, B, C D and all the way up to Z. Mailing Lists are subsets. The can intersect, as we see in a Venn diagram.
Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses are hard-coded into Thunderbird. If you delete the underlying data files they will simply be re-created the next time you run Thunderbird.
You can, as gnospen said, disable or modify the collection of addresses. You can arrange for such collection to go to another address book of your choice, or disable it altogether. I'd advise against writing them into a "working" address book, simply because it will become polluted by what you perceive to be random addresses. Leave it set to write to Collected Addresses and you know that the random addresses are contained.
You can rename both Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses via the Config Editor, though I have never understood the motivation to do so.
How do you, internally, go about organizing or choosing whom to address a message? Some users seem to be visual and like to pick from a list and ask how to see their address book when composing their message. To them I point out the Contacts Sidebar. In the Write window, press F9 to see a small address book at the left. You can select Contacts from this to add to your message.
For myself, I mentally visualise the intended recipient, and then start typing his name or address straight into the addressing box. Thunderbird will quickly start offering contacts form my address books which match what I've typed.
In this second case, it doesn't matter which address book any contact is stored in, since it will be found wherever it is. So I may as well just put all of my contacts into Personal Address Book, since no further organization or subdivision is actually needed.
If you feel a need to organize your contacts, then create new address books as required. When using the contacts sidebar, it shows only one address book at a time, so for the visual types amongst us, it winnows down the displayed addresses to the selected address book. Create a "Government" address book, select it, and the Contacts Sidebar will show only your legislative correspondents.

  • Two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine; only one backup deletes.

I'm using two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine and deleted some backups while in Time Machine. They deleted from drive A, but drive B still has the files. Is there a way to delete these? I tried unmounting drive A in Disk Utility but then I can't enter Time Machine.
I love the dual backups, but should I be able to do dual deletes of all backups? I don't see a way to accomplishg this except to force Time Machine to do a backup, then do that again so it switches drives, but that seems a bit convoluted.
If one of you guru types has an answer I'd be most interested.
    Thanks.

You can manually deal with this by using the "Browse Other Backup Disks" function which is accessed via holding the opt/alt key and while selecting the TM icon in the menu bar.
You can then delete the instances of the desired files in each backup set.
Not elegant, but I wouldn't expect that this will be done automatically, as there are a lot of permutations of how you use multiple backup sets.

You can't do this, and you can't transfer purchases between accounts. There is no conflict about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match (the ID you've been using for iTunes) and using the other ID for iCloud.

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • Can I have two address books on one computer

    Hi,
I have my standard address book I use and love. I am an artist and forever having to make slide labels. I have used many programs and databases to do this task. To my surprise address book would accomplish this amazing well. I just don't want to combine my art label information with my address stuff? So can I have two address files on one mac?
    cc

    CC,
you can add a new user account on your Mac (open system preferences / accounts) and start fresh there with an empty AddressBook.
If you want to fill this with a part of your original AB, select those and export as vCards. Drop this export file in your shared folder so you can access that from the new user account. Open AB ther and import the vCards

While in the Address Book press the Menu and than Options. Just type in RSET
(capital letters) and you'll be able to wipe out all your Desktops where the
Wireless synchronization is Not available. You can keep intact the last Desktop
where the Wireless Synchronization is Yes.

  • How can I print an address card?

    Hi Folks,
I've just discovered what seems like a ridiculous limitation of Address Book. I am having a hard time believing this is so, and am sure there must be a way to do this.
I need to print out an address card, as it appears in the Address Book. I want all info, including the notes.
I can't find a way to do it. I figured out I can print a list, an envelope layout, an address card (with some info), and perhaps one other option.
Would someone kindly tell me how I can simply print an address book card? It won't even let me select a whole card for copy/paste to elsewhere for printing.
For now I have resorted to copying the card from Google Contacts, to which I have Address Book sync'ed. I then pasted that data into a new email and printed the email (in Mail). I could have used Word, etc..
Is there an easier way? If not from within Mac, is there a small app that makes the data in my address book more readily converted into ink and paper? I have looked on Google for the past 25 minutes and found nothing.
    Any tips greatly appreciated.
    With thanks,
    Jonathan

    Thanks TeenTitan,
I had not realised the List style would allow all that.
This works. The layout is not ideal because it puts everything into columns across the page, but it is better than nothing... and easier than going via my Google Contacts sync.
Are these styles editable? Is there a template hiding away somewhere in the far reaches of my OS that I could fiddle with to change the layout or make a new style? Would love to know.
    Cheers,
    Jonathan

How can I recover an old/disused iCloud account. I was having some issues with my apple id so I restored my iPad, I am now stuck on the activation screen as I no longer use the iCloud account i used to set up the iPad and can't remember the address or pas

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?
