Can maverick be installed on external harddrive?

I have a 2008 iMac and want to install Maverick on a partition of an external harddrive.  Can this be done?

Of course. You just need to format the external drive with a GUID partition map and with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
Then, run the OS X Mavericks installer and choose the external drive to install OS X Mavericks

  • Installing Mavericks As A Bootable External Harddrive Please Help!

Hi sorry to bother you, I'm having difficulty installing Mavericks as a bootable external harddrive. I've downloaded Mavericks off the App Store (which taken 4 hours) and have tried using the createinstallmedia method but I'm having no joy
I've been following a Youtube tutorial and everytime I run the below command through terminal when I get to the part where its "Making disk bootable…" I get this message - Couldn't mount dmg /volumes/install os x mavericks/install os x mavericks.app/contents/sharedsupport/installesd.dmg (error code 5)mount of outer dmg failed.
I have no idea what this means I'v tried googling it and there isn't much on the subject apart from one forum where one guy had to re download Mavericks again which I've done already and still get the same error message. If anyone knows where I am going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Done.

Thanks "clintonfrombirmingham" for the quick reply! Yea I think I am going to have to use either the Disk Utility method or like what you suggested the DiskMaker option. I was just interested in the reason as to why it wasn't working for me using the bootable USB installation disk method.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

    What format is the external?

  • Maverick does not see External Harddrive

I had a Seagate external usb3 harddrive connected.  I was working on a video file when suddenly I got a message in the upper right hand corner saying that the external harddrive was incorrectly disconnected or dismounted.  OK.  So, I unplug and then plug the ext. HD back into the usb3 port.  To make the story short, the hd light comes on, I can hear the disk spinning.  But it does not appear in the Finder or desktop.   The only sign on the Mac is by going to the "About This Mac" and to the System Report which lists hardware and software.  Clicking on the USB line, it shows the external HD plugged into one of the usb 3 ports.  The disk info indicates its ID and other data and how much energy it is consuming (it appears it is only using 96 mA from an available 500 mA).  So, it appears that the Mac sees it and can read it and has power enough to run it.
I then removed the first ext. HD and inserted another Seagate external usb3 harddrive - the Mac doesn't see it either except in the System report.  The external HDs  do not show up in the Disk Utility app.  The only conclusion is that the harddrives are probably OK but the Mac won't mount them anymore.  Most people with unmountable ext. HDs usually see them in the disk utility (greyed out).
    Any ideas.

Update - I have three Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external harddrives.  The two that I have connected to my Macbook Pro no longer can be read.  I took the two and connected to another MacBook Pro but it would not read the drivers either.  I took my third drive which I have not connected to my Macbook Pro for several weeks and connected to the other Macbook Pro and it reads it fine.
I downloaded drivers from Seagate but it didn't help.  I started my computer in safe mode, HD didn't work.  I have another drive containing a duplicate of my internal HD (using Superduper) and booted with the backup drive.  It would not open the two drives.   I'm taking the HD to a friend who has a G5 using an early Mac OS, 6.0.  These two drives contain my video files and I need to retrieve the files.
Conclusion:  The Maverick on my computer has corrupted the first two Seagate drives.

  • Logic Studios install fail - external harddrive

Hey! i have bought my self a Logic Studio 9 at my local Apple store, and is currently trying to install the program on my Mac Book Pro (10.5.8). Since i create, store and use a lot of movies my harddisk is full and i have bought an external hard drive (iomega prestige desktop hard drive 1Tb). Since i don't have the required space available on my harddisk, i tried to install logic studios on my external harddrive.
The problem occurred after i had completed the formation the external hard-drive demanded. When i try to install the applications on my external harddrive it, however, says: "You can not install Logic Studio on this volume. This software must be installed on the running system". My questions are therefore:
Does anyone know how to solve my problem? Do i have to delete over 20 gb of stuff from my harddrive to be able to install the applications?
Help will be highly appreciated, since i have spent 450 $ on these programs.

Excellent, i now have the applications installed! thanks a lot, one question remains though.. i still can't install the additional content, when i try to use the logic studios installer to only install the content it still says ""You can not install Logic Studio on this volume. This software must be installed on the running system" so it forces me to install it on my harddrive. Any suggestions how to solve this problem?

  • Can not copie folder to external harddrive

    Hello guys,
I have a problem, for some reason i can not copie an folder to my external harddrive. I can copie for example an musik file from the folder to my harddrive but not the folder itself. I checked if i have read/write permissions on both of them and i have the permissions. For some reason i get an message that i do not have the right access permissions or read permissions to copie my folder even as i am loged in as admin.
I hope someone can help me, thanks in advance.

Well I just had this same problem and figured out the solution.  Looks like the ownership of my .Trash folder was changed somehow.
Open Terminal.app  and type the following
    ls -la
This should show you a list of your home directory.  At the top you should see something like the following
drwx------   2 (short username)  staff     68 21 Aug 22:26 .Trash
where short username is your username.
If it is something different like admin or root or something else type the following
sudo chown -R (your usernam) .Trash
insert your short username without the brackets where it shows (your username)
    that should do the trick.

  • Logic 9 can't be installed on external disk not running OS X - huh?

    Would really appreciate some help...
Did a basic install of Logic Pro 9 on my MacBook but didn't install additional content as my MacBook doesn't have sufficient space and I just wanted to get started.
Now I have tried to install the additional content (loops etc.) on my Time Capsule (which isn't even recognised) or my external drive (connected via USB).
When I try the latter I get the following message...
"Logic Studio can't be installed on this disk. You can only install this software on the disk that is running Mac OS X" ????
I didn't realise external drives ran OSX? My MacBook doesn't have space for all of the content.
Please help me install this additional content to either my Time Capsule or external drive
    Many thanks!!

    bill borez wrote:
Yep, the additional content will only install on your system disk unfortunately.
Not quite true. The additional content cannot be directly installed on USB-disks connected to a Macbook, to be precise.
What you could do is free up enough space on your system disk, by (temporarily) moving stuff to your USB disk, then install the content on your startup disk, and then move the content to the USB disk. Here's how to:
    EXS content:
    1. Copy (drag) the folders inside /Library/Application Support/Logic/EXS Factory Samples/ and in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/ to an appropriate place (folder) on your external drive (this may take anywhere from two to fifteen minutes, depending on your system and number of EXS- and Garageband Instruments);
    2. Delete the originals;
    3. Open Logic, load EXS, click on its display window until the instrument menu drops down; choose 'refresh overview' if necessary. Done.
*Be aware that this works for Logic, but if you also use Garageband, the /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/ folder should remain on the boot drive.
If you use Garageband Instruments in Logic, note that you can also load those in the EXS24.
    Loops:
Establish where your loops are, then move them anywhere you like. After the move you have to reindex the loop browser, so Logic 'knows' where to find the files.
First delete the index files from the accompanying *Apple Loops Index* folders (they're text files).
these are the default Apple Loops locations:
    YourHD/Library/Audio
    YourHD/Users/'you'/Library/Audio
    YourHD/Library/Application Support/Logic
    YourHD/Library/Application Support/Garageband
To reindex now drag'n drop your folders containing the loops, from the Finder >onto Logics' Loop Browser. Note: Every individual folder you drop on the Loop >Browser will get an entry in the 'Show' dropdown menu in the Loop Browser.
The reindexing can take 0.5 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of loops and >the power of your Mac.
    regards, Erik.

  • Can anyone recommend a good external harddrive for iTunes backup?

I would like to backup my files externally. I really dont know too much about this stuff. Can anyone make a suggestion for an external harddrive? Thanks!

I have an AcomData 120GB, a Western Digital 200GB and a Fantom 250GB external HD. All are working well. LaCie is another fine brand. I usually buy the major brands by price. Expect to pay $0.50 or less per GB (my last ExHD was $90 for 250GB).
If you are very concerned about longevity, then look at the Seagates as they carry a 5-year warranty (at least on the internal laptop drive that I have purchased).

  • Is there an ORGANIZER for my photos which I can seperatly store on an external harddrive?

Is there an ORGANIZER for my photos which I can separately store on an external hard drive?
    ? portable photo organizer

    ayanda2014 a écrit:
Okay, this is it. I only need the organizer and catalogue (as a kind of archive) separately. I do not want to work with and shop the pictures. Just want to store and find the pics.
I hope you understand what is in the catalog. Pardon me if you already know, but other readers might be misled by this discussion.
A catalog is just like the catalog booklet which holds all the information about the paintings in a museum. A list of all the paintings, their location in the museum, their size, their authors and some history. Plus small images (thumbnails) to show the image and many indexes, by title, author or painting type.
The catalog does not contain the images, only useful information to find paintings and know what is useful about them.
The catalog can be moved: you can take it at home with you. The informations are still valid when you move the catalog.
With the organizer (it's the same with Ligthtroom), you can move or copy the catalog, which is a folder containing the database and associated files and subfolders.
To use the Elements catalog outside of your main computer, you need another computer with a copy of the same Elements program. The catalog itself on an external drive is just a kind of backup, but it can't be read. So you can store a copy on an external drive, but to open the catalog you need Elements. Imagine you plug in the catalog external drive from another computer. Without a copy of the picture files, only the information and thumbnails can be seen. You can do various organization tasks like adding tags, creating albums, rating, adding notes.
If that is what you want to do and you can plug in the external drive on another computer with Elements, that's fine (you can have two copies of Elements 'signed in' at the same time).

  • Can't open project on External Harddrive

I'm using iMovie 5.0.2 and working on a project that is saved on an external hard drive.
After 6 hours of editing, the power cord came out of the hard drive. I connected everything and tried to save the project. I then got scared and stopped the saving. Now I can't open the project. I can't save it to another part of the hard drive and open it. Every time I try to open the movie it says :
    A project file is missing.
The file "_" couldn't be opened
and is being skipped. Click Ignore All
to skip any remaining missing file messages.
The iMovie quits. If I can find the files- all won't be lost. Plus, I have a high res quicktime file saved of the raw footage. But, I would like NOT to lose that 6 hours of work.
Can I open this file? Did I mess it up? Where are the video clips saved? I can't find them. I have iMovie on my laptop and the project saved on the hard drive.
Thanks for any help. This is why I'm so done with video Just a few more projects to do. After 15 years this type of crap drives me crazy.
    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't do anything more with your iMovie. Don't try another save, as that can write over your last good saves. You MAY be able to retrieve the prior save. Hopefully, you saved as you went along during these 6 hours so you can retrieve a very recent saved version.
(These types of accidents have made me realize the importance of backing up my movies-in-progress as I am editing them. I did not do this in the past, and now I try to do it at least at the end of each editing session so that not all would be lost. I had an external drive fail suddenly and all of my movies were gone. Fortunately, I was able to reimport the original footage, but frequent saves would have been best).
In iM6, you can access the project files by control or right-clicking on the star icon and selecting 'show package contents' to let you see the movie files. One or more of the icons will have a tilde ~ or several of them. Those are prior versions of the iMovie, and can be used to get back to a prior save.
In iM5, I think you can just directly open the project files and see the movie files as ~ files with the name as "yourmovie.mov" It might be in a Cache folder and might be called "Timeline Movie.mov." If you don't see anything like a Cache folder, try doing the process for iM6 above. If you see multiple .mov files with ~ and then more ~~ or even ~~~ those are more versions. You may have to try one or more of these to find the latest one possible.
Once you locate the .mov version of your movie, open a new iMovie project and drop in one of the .mov~ movies into it and see if it works. If so, continue editing with this one. This version will be all in one clip, so more editing is a bit more difficult, but not impossible and at least you will have some of your work back.
It's crucial you NOT save the messed-up project right now, for that will destroy the good QuickTime movie, replacing it with a bad "empty" movie.
(Thanks to Karl Peterson for the info re: retrieving prior saved movies).
    Good luck!

  • How can I set up an external harddrive with time machine that already has data on it without losing the data?

I have an external hard drive that I use to hold photos and other files on that no longer fit on my macbook. I also use the external hard drive for back ups set up with time machine. I don't believe I ever did anything to partition it, I've just always had separate folders (Photos, Music, etc) with one being called "Back Ups" (or Backups.backupdb) that my time machine back ups would automatically go into. Recently, I made the switch from my HDD in my macbook to a new SSD of the same size. I used the back ups on the external hard drive to restore all my content, which all worked out fine. My problem now is in using my external hard drive. When I plug it in, it no longer seems to be working with time machine. Also, I was organizing some files within the external hard drive, and when I dragged one into a folder, it took a while to load. Before, it was instantaneous moving a file already on the external hard drive to another location within it. Can anyone help me in getting the external hard drive to work with my new SSD? I don't want to delete any of the folders or back ups that are already on it, since that's the only place I have some of those files. Please let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks! (sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum)

First, she has to be logged in to the same iTunes account as she used on the old computer.
Second, when she plugs the iPhone in to iTunes, right click on the phone name and select transfer purchases.
Third, enter one contact and one calendar entry into the new computer's addressbook/calendar.
After that, she should be fine.

  • After installing Leopard External Harddrives won't mount.

I have 5 EHD connected to my iMac. After I installed Leopard, none of the drive show up on the finder nor in Disk Utility. I tried resetting the PRAM but no go. I checked then drives on my iBook and they mount. I did disk repair but it said no repairs were necessary.
I check system profiler and it can't find anything in the Firewire ports. I have a firewire connected printer that is also not showing.

I can get the HDs to show up if I don't use the hub.

I am **** confuse what should I do next?
    Anyhelp wold be great......

Delete the user account, then use the "Erase Free Space" option in the Erase tab of Disk Utility to write zeroes to the drive. Stick with the "Fastest" method (one pass of zeroes) unless you're hiding secrets from the NSA - anything more stringent is a waste of time.
