Can more than one Ipod be used one one computer?

My sister and I share a computer and each have an Ipod. I have a 30GB and she has a 2GB and we're having problems using the same Itunes. Is there a way for us both to use the same Itunes on the same computer, or do we have to use separate computers to have separate playlists? Thanks.

off topic - but StarDeb, have you seen btabz's excellent pages?

You left-click on the link, nothing happens which is disconcerting, but then you right-click paste into discussions here, and it's formatted lovely.
b noir told me about it.
Maybe since you've gone over to the dark side of Macs it doesn't work, though. giggling

Do you mean share via USB? Or connect to two different computers?
USB can't share two connections at once like that, and for it to be connected to one, then the other, both computers need to have the same iTunes account running.

  • Can more than one ipod use an itunes library

Sorry for the newbe qestion but I need some advice for my daughters ipod. I have two libraries on two different computers. how do i set the itunes to manual sync. Can I also sync different ipods, we have several.
    thx

*I have two libraries on two different computers. how do i set the itunes to manual sync*
You don't set iTunes to manual, you set the iPod. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
*Can I also sync different ipods, we have several*
There are a few different ways to use multiple iPods with one computer. However if the iPods are also being used with multiple computers then you'll be using the manual method regardless and not any form of auto-sync. Have a look at this help page for all the suggestions: How to use multiple iPods with one computer

  • Can't use the iPod on more than one computer!!!!!!!

Ok, This has got me so frustrated! We got an iPod and installed iTunes. We thought we had it figured out - we purchased music from iTunes, played it on the iPod and everything was great. Then plugged the iPod into my other computer to listen to our music and it won't freakin' play! says the computer is "Not Authorized" and suggests that by 'authorizing' the 2nd computer, it will overwrite the songs that are already on the iPod. This is NOT desirable. We've downloaded and installed iTunes onto the 2nd computer and used the same login account that we used on the first computer.
What gives!?!?! I thought this was supposed to be easy, but it's not! I was hoping for a quick and simple "plug it in and start listening to music." This is definately not quick and simple. Albeit, I'm new to this iPod craze, but this shouldn't be so difficult. I've poked around on the website and cannot seem to find an answer to this.
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks
oh btw, Is anyone else getting annoyed by Apple's rediculous attempt at monopolizing this market by forcing us to use thier own proprietary software?!?!

First of all, any computer that plays purchased content must be authorized. This can be accomplished by opening iTunes, then store>authorize computer. If you wish to use your iPod on more than one computer & not have your iPod content erased, you will have to have your iPod preferences set on "manually manage". See the following link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61675
Also, it's not only Apple that uses proprietary software. How about Zune players, & several others?

How can I use my iPod nano on more than one computer?

    Hi, China6450.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend setting up Manually manage music.  This will only allow music to be synced from the computer to the iPod nano.  Here are some helpful articles that will walk you through the process.

  • Can I use iPod with more than one computer?

I have a 60gb iPod w/ color (4th Gen). On my laptop which is my home computer I also have all my music as well as on my iPod. I would like to know if I can put all my music on a second or even third computer so that I can access the music. Also, my girlfriend has a iPod nano. Would she be able to access my music if I put the music on her computer?

  • How to use ipod w/ more than one computer

I am new to ipod. I set it up on my laptop, and have all uploaded my cds to my ipod from there. I do nat have internet at home, so tried using my parents computer. How do you use the ipod with another computer that doesn't have all your songs on it? When I go to sync it, it ask if i want to delete all my ipod songa and replace with the ones on the other computer. I am trying to get album artwork. What am I not doing right?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library. Even when manually managing an iPhone, you can only add content from one iTunes library.

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.

  • Can't use more than one computer

It appears to be impossible to use more than one computer with the shuffle.
Connecting to another computer results in choosing between erasing the library and linking to the second computer's library or not mounting the iPod.
I did not expect this behavior and it is very deceptive.
Tech support seems unable to figure it out. If it can't do it then the techs should say so and the literature should so indicate it
Very unlike what I expect from Apple

Apple cannot aid in the ability to load entire music
libraries from different computers onto one pod as it
would be prone to copyright infringement abuse. That
is why what you are requesting to be done is not
    automatic through iTunes.
I understand that. My daughter downloaded purchased music using her sister's computer and the gift card from her sister whom she was visiting on their shared birthdays .
I agree that tech support should just told you
directly what you wanted to know but you are equally
at fault for assuming this ability ever existed
without doing 5 minutes of research.
A simple google of the terms would have yielded the
    answer you wanted.
When she got home she wanted some help putting some more music on her shuffle (a gift from us) from a cd of a friend's local band to use during her last chemo treatment the next day. Her Mac is running 8.6 so she asked me to do it for her.
I dragged the files and dropped them on the ipod icon for her thinking that would be the simple Apple way.
Couldn't play them, though I could see them. Couldn't see the purchased music (when double clicking the icon) but could hear the music. That started the search.
I do appreciate the copyright issue but Apple tech should have known the answer right away, not after the fourth tech contact. No where does it state simply that one cannot do this and I don't agree that I am at fault to assume that I could.

  • Using Ipod on more than one computer

I have just purchased a new ipod after my old one broke down and when I hooked it up to my computer i got a message saying that this is the 5th computer my ipod is registered to... Being a new ipod i would think I should start again with this process... I have only hooked the new one up to one computer... can anyone help on this

"i got a message saying that this is the 5th computer my ipod is registered to."
Not sure why you would see that message, you can use an iPod with an unlimited amount of different computers.

Sure you're not confusing this with the maximum of 5 authorized computer for the purchase and playback of iTunes purchased music?

  • Can i sync my iphone and ipod's to more than one computer?

Can i sync my iphone 4 and ipod's (we have #) to more than one compute? so we call all share the music.
Also can you inport music from an ipod to itunes? (music has already been deleted from the library)

Switching the computer will erase your device and replace the content of it with the content of the new iTunes library. But you can share your music by using Home Sharing. iTunes: Understanding Home Sharing
Purchased music can be copied back by using "transfer purchases" from the iTunes menu or, if not purchased from iTunes, by using 3rd party software http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Can you connect your ipod to more than one computer?

i was wondering if it is possible to hook up an ipod to more than one computer? i would like to use itunes both on my home computer and my lap top. is this possible?

Hi ctwerner, welcome to the forums.
In a nutshell, it is and it isn't. The first category to address is the operating system - if you own a Windows computer and a Mac laptop, or vice versa, the process is impossible as the file structures will be different. However, assuming you have computers with the same type of operating system, it is possible, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
iPods have two modes of updating - manual and automatic. In manual, you have to drag all your music across from the iTunes library and basically do everything yourself. Automatic is the complete opposite - iTunes synchronises everything in your library with your iPod. Updates the time, too.
Basically, if you use manual, the 'Pod becomes what I'd call a 'rogue' - not tied to any computer. You can plug it into any machine and copy music to it (not from it though - copy-protection doesn't allow it). In automatic, for convenience and to make sure your library is accurate, the 'Pod is locked to the original machine. I say 'locked' but it really isn't. However, if you have the 'Pod set to auto and change computers, iTunes will ask you if you want to change the library settings to that computer - if you say yes, it'll wipe your 'Pod clean of music (not other files if you use it as a hard drive, I think) and copy only the files it has in its' library. Likewise, switching back will result in the same thing.
To change between these settings, plug your iPod into your original computer (ie the one you use the Pod with), go to iTunes and choose Edit -> Preferences -> iPod, and then pick either the top option for 'Auto' or the bottom for 'Manual.'
Bear in mind that copying music is only practical over USB2.0 or Firewire (for the 1st to 4th generation iPods only - Firewire is not supported for the colour screen versions). If you have an old laptop, it might have USB1.1, at which point data transfer is painfully slow (I speak from experience, so trust me!). Of course, your desktop may very well have USB1.1, at which point you might not even notice...
Hope this helps you, and enjoy your iPod!
