Can multiple iTunes Store accounts be linked to one iTunes Library

Hi there! I'm having trouble getting a clear answer to this question. If I'm being confusing, forgive me. We are a family of three with two iPod Touches and one older iPod. We recently purchased a new iMac and I migrated our common iTunes Library to the Mac. We won't be using to PC anymore. There are three separate accounts on the Mac but all of them point to the same iTunes Library.
Up until now, we have been using my Apple ID/iTunes Store account for all purchases. I would like to set up a separate iTunes store account for my daughter so she can use all the gift cards she gets to make her own purchases. *If I give her a separate iTunes Store account, can whatever she purchases go into our common library?* I don't want to her to lose access to all the apps and music we have already accumulated.
If both accounts can download content to the same library, can I expect any problems when I sync the different iPods? All of them are set up to sync manually so that we can choose which music playlists, movies and apps go to which device. Will my daughter have to sync her iPod twice -- logging each iTunes store account once -- to get all her content? Are there problems with updating apps?
Sorry this is so long! I keep getting the same answer from an Apple tech via e-mail but it doesn't address the exact points of my concerns! Thanks for any help you can provide.

We have several macs, several ipods, a couple of iphones, several itunes store accounts. So far no problem. You might have to share passwords if you want to share content. I think iStore accounts can only be used on up to 5 computers. We have 7, so have to be a little careful about that. I don't think there is a limit on how many iDevices can be used with one account. I also don't think there is a limit on how many accounts can be used on a single computer (might be wrong about that). You have to be logged into the iStore to download content, and your computer has to be registered with the account to use the content, but once it is on, and registered, syncing to an iPod is not a problem (you do not have to login in again for each account the content was purchased from). I'm just glad I only have two kids, and one wife - things could get trickier in a big family with . . .

  • Can I use my iTunes Store account with more than one PC ?

    Hi all,
Am I able to use my iTunes Store account with more than one PC ?
I use my account on my PC - but I would like to download the latest version of iTunes onto my Mum's laptop, log in to my own iTunes Store account and rent a movie for her to download onto the laptop.
Is this possible and would I still be able to use my account on my PC at the same time?
    Many thanks,
    Steve.

    Good question.
I don't think you can--if I'm incorrect, someone will tell me--but it seems to me to be easier to simply open an iTunes account for your mom. Then get her a gift card, load it into iTunes for her, and rent a movie that way. Not elegant at all...but workable.

  • Have found multiple iTunes Library.xml files. Moved Library to new Hard Drive and it needs to be completely rebuilt?

Hello. I have a Mac Mini operating Mac OS X 10.7.2. I recently had to move my iTunes Library to a new hard drive. I followed the directions on how to move the library and refind everything yet when I do so what comes up is a mere skeleton of what I had. I have had to hunt down my purchased Apps, Music and Movies and re-add them to the library. I also noticed in doing this I have multiple iTunes Library.xml files ... shouldn't there only be one?  If so how do I clean this up without doing any accidental damage (i.e. how do I find the one that is being used and delete the rest?)?  If I delete the others is there any risk of losing purchased content? Lastly syncing my iPads has become a nightmare as I get the "This iPad is currently synced to another iTunes library" message. Obviously something

It's hard for me to picture the exact situation. It sounds like you still have your library file on the internal but some files on the external, and maybe some on the internal, some of which are in the library and others not...  By re-adding things after consolidating it may have made things into a hodge-podge. Yes, that article you referenced says: "iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder"with Media Folder being the emphasis.  You probably should have just moved your whole iTunes folder.  Still, moving the media folder as instructed should not have messed up the library.  Did you make the mistake of starting up iTunes before the external drive had mounted fully and it then told you it couldn't find many files?  How you proceed to sort it out will depend upon how much time you want to spend and how important things such as ratings and playcount are to you.  I have not actually used the consolidate feature across different drives myself (and don't feel inclined to do so here to test ).
If you are in the USA you can download some previous purhcases with iCloud, but not all.

Once you get iTunes working off the external drive it should just put new media to the external when you add it.

  • HT1711 can multiple itunes accounts sync together

I have triplets that got ipads and want to know how we can share the things we buy on itunes but keep the itunes gift card money seperated between kids!  We currently have one itunes account and manually download the songs, games, etc that we want.  Can I have a seperate itunes account for each kid and still allow us to share our purchases?  Do we need to use different computers or can we use the same one?  Please help this extremely limited technical mom with 3 anxious kids!

You need to use multiple iTunes Store accounts with one iTunes library and log into and out of the iTunes Store as needed.

  • Can multiple iTunes accounts be merged?

What is the timeframe looking like for finally being able to merge iTunes accounts? It's very un-Apple to not bring simplicity to this issue... Any thoughts?

It is not possible to merge iTunes Store accounts. Whether it will ever be possible to do so is something none of us here, who are all just fellow users, will know.
    Regards.

  • Can the iTunes library span multiple harddrives?

From searching this forum, I think the answer is no, but there wasn't anything directly on point, so I'm just double checking. If the answer is yes, please explain how.
But what if I have two different windows users, and have their respective preferences set to look for the iTunes folders on my two different hard drives? Obviously I could only sync to one drive or the other, but would it work otherwise?
    thanks.

The itunes library ITL file is a single file and has to be in one place.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
The actual music files can be anywhere....on different drives, in different folders, etc. But you can only have one iTunes Music Folder.
If you have them spread around in different places, my suggestion is to NOT let iTunes manage your library, and make sure the Copy files" setting is turned off.
Sounds like what you want to do is method 3 from this article. I know it's title multiple iPods but it is what you want, I think.

  • Can 1 iTunes library be used for 2 match "accounts"?

My husband and I have built our music collection into 1 iTunes library on a computer over the years (with lots of albums imported from CDs). I signed up for Match recently. Can he also use that library if he pays for Match separately?I did a test and I think it may work but looking for confirmation before we pay another $25.
My test was- I have Match loaded on my iphone and I can see all of our songs. I logged out of iTunes on our computer and he logged in using his separate Apple ID. It appears he could then pay for Match and go through the set up using our library also. I went back to my iphone and all of the songs are still available even though I logged out of iTunes on the computer. When I logged back into iTunes on the computer with my Apple ID, Match was not set up and I would have to go through the steps of setting it back up. That is not a concern for me because I only care about access to Match on my iphone.

    Hi
You can only use one Apple id on your computer for iTunes match. If your husband used his Apple id and signed up for match, you would be locked out of match for 90 days. You should consider both of you using your Apple id for match.

  • Apple TV can see iTunes library but can't load content (intermittently)

I have intermittently been experiencing an issue where the Apple TV shows my iTunes library, but when I select it, no artwork appears for any of the categories (Music, Movies, etc.)  If I select a category, it says it is loading, but never does. It shows the loading page for an extended period of time.
Connectivity otherwise seems fine. My iPhone/iPad remote apps still find the Apple TV, although they can not select my iMac library separately to play content through the Apple TV the way they should be able to, even though they see the library. My iMac and Apple TV are both connected by ethernet. I use an AirPort Extreme as the router, but the Apple TV has a wired connection through that router. My network/router situation has been pretty solid. I had (different) issues with my 1st gen Apple TV and as part of the troubleshooting for that totally reworked our setup and gave the computer and Apple TV both a wired connection. It didn't help that problem and I don't think it's related here.
I tried closing and re-opening iTunes, turning on and off home sharing including not pressing "done" as people here have suggested for other issues, and rebooting the computer. I tried with a MacBook Pro also, and I have the same isue. When this happens, it affects the iTunes libraries on both computers. Finally I reset the router and rebooted the Apple TV itself. It then started working again. I'm not sure which of those helped since I did them at the same time.
Once when this happened to my husband, he just gave up, and several hours later (presumably after the Apple TV and iMac had both gone to sleep and woken up), it worked again without rebooting or resetting anything.

    Hi All,
Same issue here. Just upgraded (?) from the previous version of Apple TV, to the new Apple TV2. Like others here, my main problems seem to be with unreliable streaming from iTunes 10 on my PowerMac (Quad G5, Leopard OSX).
My original AppleTV had no issues w/the wireless network, or synching w/my PowerMac.
The network connection from the ATV2 are fine, and have no issues accessing the Apple Store (for movies, TV shows), or accessing Netflix. The access to the internet from my ATV2 is quite robust.
My problems are with keeping a constant, reliable wireless connection to my PowerMac, via an Airport Extreme wireless router.
I have tried multiple restarts, reboots, reset ATV2 to original settings, tried different wireless channels on the Airport Extreme, verified I have Home Sharing properly enabled in iTunes, etc, but no luck so far.
What I'm seeing is when I access my iTunes on my computer, I can see my library, and then if I start to "shuffle songs" I may get 1 to 3 songs to play fine, but then the music stops, and I can no longer access the music/movies/etc in iTunes any longer. When I then go to my PowerMac, it has lost most bars of signal strength on the wireless network (although all other devices show strong signal strength), and I have to Turn AirPort Off, then Turn AirPort On and I then am reconnected to the wireless network with good signal.
I then go back to the ATV2, connect to my iTunes, start my music, and then 1-2 songs later it again stops playing, and I go through this all over again.
It seems as though there is something on the wireless network between the ATV2 and my PowerMac that causes it to lose connection, and I have to manually start again. The problem is that the connection is not robust, and only lasts a few minutes.
    Hope this gets solved soon.
    Regards
    Tom

  • Can my itunes library be sourced from more than 1 hard drive?

Currently my iTunes library is on an external 3TB hard drive but is filling up fast. Can I just add another hard drive and have my itunes library on more than 1 HD or does it need to all be in 1 place?

Hmmm... I think there may be a snag in that regard.  Although the library is separate, the preferences settings are the same since those are not part of a library but part of the user's library (as in computer user account, not iTunes) preferences.  I do have multiple libraries (for different non-Apple mp3 players I manage) but they share the same media in part and since day one I have always not had iTunes manage my media which is stored on two different internal drives.  Of course if you do that then having a single set of preferences doesn't matter since they aren't being used anyway, and that may be the way you would have to go.  I dont' really want to mess with my preferences settings right now to test if one could get it to work with default settings -- it would be a huge mess if iTunes suddenly thought I wanted it to manage my media!!
Edit:  You can also hold down the option key while dragging media to a library to override iTunes preferences to copy to media folder.  You could do this for a low management library such as a movie library where you are not adding and subtracting things on a daily basis (unless you can afford new movies every day).

  • Can an iTunes library on a has device be shared by two mac computers?

I have an iTunes library on a has device and would like to share or use the library on two macs. Is this possible?

    Additions to Niel's post:
Make sure both your computers are authorized with the iTunes Store to be able to play back all content.
Only one computer can open the library at a time.

  • Can my iTunes library be on more than 1 hard disk ?

    Hi,
While having my music library on my computer, can I also store my movies files on the hard disk connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) ?
    Regards.

While I don't know about using an AEB, yes you can have it on more than one disk if you are willing to do some extra effort.  iTunes is really set up to work with one disk.  You can turn off the copy to Media folder when adding to iTunes feature in iTunes references, or you can just always remember to hold down the option key while adding an item to iTunes and iTunes will not copy it to the media folder.  The only thing is, other features of iTunes may not behave as you are used to.  For example, if you delete a track this may turn into a two step process with deleting it form iTunes, then deleting the media file itself wherever you are keeping it.
