Can Multiple Systems Share Updates?

In my house I've got 4 macs. Two MacBooks, one iMac, and one G5 Tower (PPC). All systems have leopard installed.
My question is, can I set it up to where updates download once and share to the different systems rather than downloading the same updates multiple times.
Would setting up a machine as a server make any difference?
Thanks for all the help!

Usually when I do an update I download the 10.5.x Combo update to my desktop and then run it from there. I think the installer determines the MacOS components of the update once the install is executed rather than at Combo download time, though. The Apple 10.5.7 Combo Update release notes can be read at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3397/ It doesn't say anything about configuration restrictions. I would then assume this update can be used with any Mac machine. Then again I am a risk taker!
If you use Ethernet, downloading for each machine shouldn't be too much of an issue.
A word of caution, Snow Leopard will not support PPC Macs. See http://www.apple.com/macosx/

My other daughter received hers today as well but she hasn't activated it yet. What can we do to prevent this from happening? Also, can multiple iPhones share one iTunes account?

  • How can multiple vis share input from a DAQ simutaneously

How can multiple vis share data input from a DAQ simutaneously?
Recently I am building a EMG measurement platform and somehow DAQ data need to be shared by several vis at the same  time.
    Are there any ideas?

If you may need to add/delete tasks that will need th edata you may want to consider a publich/subscribe pattern. Basically your DAQ task will post a message to a single queue. The process listening on this queue (message broker) will determine if there are other processes registered to receive this message. When a device registers for a message it provides a queue to receive it on. The message broker will then post the message to all interested processes. The nice thing about this pattern is that you have dedicated code to handle broadcasting the message and it is very easy at run time to change the number of processes that get the message. The DAQ task will always send the message and will not care how many processes are listening.

  • How can multiple users share a catalog?

PSE 5 - We have multiple users sign on to the same PC.  The catalog is created on a network drive that all have access to.  Photos added to the catalog by one user are not accessible by another user.  Is the catalog profile-dependant?  Is there some setting I am missing?

The users can open the photos directly in Windows Picture Viewer but, for some users, the catalog looks empty in Photoshop Elements.
    1. Verify that each account is indeed loading the same catalog.  Do Help > System Info within the PSE Organizer to verify the catalog name and location is identical.   Perhaps one or more the accounts is opening another default (empty) catalog.
    2. Ensure the Organizer is showing you all the files:
    a. In View > Media Types, check all the types.
    b. In the Organize pane on the right, check Hidden to see if any of the cataloged photos are marked "hidden".
    c. Do Fine > Clear Date Range.
    d. If Back To All Photos is showing in the upper right, click it.

  • Can Multiple Users Share an iTunes Library?

    Hey all,
There are two user accounts on my MacBook Pro, mine and my wife's. I manage my iTunes library on my account (buy songs, update playlists, automatically download podcasts, etc). When we switch to my wife's account and open iTunes on her side, the library is empty and iTunes prompts her to get started like any first-time user.
Is there a way to share and control the same library across both accounts? I.e. opening and managing iTunes on one account is no different than doing it on the other.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chip

Geez.. What the article describes sounds like what I have in mind, but it looks like some pretty serious permissions tweaking.
The one line that concerns me is this:
"Note that iPhoto (iTunes) will be smart, and will not let two or more users tinker with the shared iPhoto (iTunes) library at once through fast user switching."
My wife and I are typically both always logged in, and we use Fast User Switching to move back-and-forth between accounts. So, if one of us has to close iTunes before the other can tinker with it, that kinda defats the whole purpose.
    Am I reading that right?
Either way, I'm definitely going to back-up my library before trying any of this.
    Thanks for the help,
    Chip

  • Can multiple users share one file for iphoto

I want to be able to have all the user profiles on our iMac access the same files for iPhoto, so when one user adds photos they are there for anyone who logs on.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

Yes, multiple portlets can share the same pageflow, and the instances

  • Can multiple threads share the same cursor in berkeley db java edition?

We use berkeley db to store our path computation results. We now have two threads which need to retrieve records from database. Specifically, the first thread accesses the database from the very beginning and read a certain number of records. Then, the second thread needs to access the database and read the rest records starting from the position where the cursor stops in the first thread. But, now, I cannot let these two threads share the same cursor. So, I have to open the database separately in two threads and use individual cursor for each thread. This means I have to in the second thread let the cursor skip the first certain number of records and then read the rest records. However, in this way, it is a waste of time letting the second thread skip a certain of records. It will be ideal for us that the second thread can start reading the record just from the place where the first thread stops. Actually, I have tried using transactional cursor and wanted to let the two threads share the same transactional cursor. But it seems that this didn't work.
Can anyone give any suggestion? Thank you so much!

  • Can multiple devices share the same library?

I was under the impression they could not. I had originally had iTunes installed with my 5th generation iPod. Several months back my wife got an iPhone 4. We were under the impression we had to set up a library exclusive to her device, so we did. I had to open my library when I wanted to sync to my iPod, she had to open hers to sync to her iPhone. Now I just got an iPhone 4, when I plugged it into my PC, it created a new device within the library I had set up for my iPod. I don't plan on using my iPod anymore, but I get the impression I could use both devices with the same library. Could I do the same with the 2 iPhones?
Where I get confused is when it comes to sharing music, and the fact that we have 3 directories now (the original iTunes directory, and two iPhone directories). Currently despite having 2 libraries, all the music is stored in the original iTunes directory. When we download music in iTunes, it has been stored to the that same directory and simply added to whatever library has been open. Then we can simply add it to the other library as we please. But what happens when we download Apps and music directly to our phones...I presume when synched to the PC, they'd get stored in the directory specific to that device, and cannot be shared?
Bottom line is I'd like all music to be available to either iPhone, but would also like to ensure it is all stored in the same directory.

What is really strange to me is the Apple licensing. I spoke with one developer about this once and here is what he told me:
You can authorize up to 5 computers with your iTunes store ID. Any of those 5 computers can sync an app onto any of the devices that they manage syncing for, and it is perfectly legit with Apple. Due to the Apple developer agreements, he can not do anything to prevent that in his code.
My wife and I each have iPhone and iPod Touch devices. We each have our own iTunes store ID's (because we didn't know better at the time) so we authenticate both computers to both accounts and we can share our music & app purchases "freely" between our 4 devices. We each could authorize up to 3 more PC's with our accounts and allow more people to share our purchases (if we trust them not to purchase things using our accounts) but we don't feel that is the correct way to treat the app developers, so we don't do that. In fact, there at least one app we have liked so much, we both spent the $7.99 to purchase even though we didn't need to.

  • Can multiple users share a single Email Account?

I set up my email account last night and everything worked perfectly. Messages downloaded from my ISP with no problems. Then I logged out of my user account and logged into my wife's user account. When I clicked on mail to test it, I realized that it is assuming she will be checking mail from a different email account. Is there a way that our seperate user accounts can share the same email account?

Technically, yes, you should be able to do this... the issue is why do you want to? If you set up her user account Mail (or whatever e-mail application you're using) preferences with the same information you used for yours (mail account name, password, SMTP information) and make sure that the "leave message on server" box is checked in the Mail preferences for both user accounts, the messages for that e-mail account can be downloaded to both user accounts. The problem is that each user would have to delete messages meant for the other. Depending on what type of mail account (IMAP, POP) it may also mean that the "new mail" status of a message may not be correct. A message read in one user's account may show up as "read" in the other. It's much tidier for each user to have their own e-mail address.

please provide some inputs into this,

    Hi Uday,
You can install EP, BW both on WAS, no need to install another WAS instance for BW alone.
We have installed EP,VC,JDI etc in single WAS instance.

  • Can multiple users share 1 address book w/out MobileMe?

To date we've used MobileMe, so synchronizing our address book amongst two user accounts (1 MacBook) was easy. However, that's the ONLY service of MobileMe I use anymore. It's just WAY too expensive for what it provides, especially compared to free services like Google. Thus, we're not renewing.
QUESTION: Is it possible to copy the address book file to a shared folder and share it like one would an iphoto or itunes library? Just checking before I try it, in case something explodes. Also, where is the file located? Thanks in advance!
p.s. Sorry if this is a repeat (likely)- I checked the first several pages and couldn't find anything.

You could try Address Book and Calendar Server (http://www.addressbookserver.com) which lets you share your contacts with your own server running on your own network.
PS: I am the developer of AddressBookServer so naturally biased towards it.
