Can multiple users share 1 address book w/out MobileMe?

To date we've used MobileMe, so synchronizing our address book amongst two user accounts (1 MacBook) was easy. However, that's the ONLY service of MobileMe I use anymore. It's just WAY too expensive for what it provides, especially compared to free services like Google. Thus, we're not renewing.
QUESTION: Is it possible to copy the address book file to a shared folder and share it like one would an iphoto or itunes library? Just checking before I try it, in case something explodes. Also, where is the file located? Thanks in advance!
p.s. Sorry if this is a repeat (likely)- I checked the first several pages and couldn't find anything.

You could try Address Book and Calendar Server (http://www.addressbookserver.com) which lets you share your contacts with your own server running on your own network.
PS: I am the developer of AddressBookServer so naturally biased towards it.

  • Multiple users sharing address book (intranet)

Can one machine with multiple users share the address book? Basically I am setting up 3 users (parent control) so they can't stuff up the settings (desktop etc.) Two of them will share the address book,iPhoto,iTunes etc. of the administrator. The other will be independant.
Can it be done simply. Yes I know about Prefs/User Groups and Users/Shared Folder. I have an existing setup (Address Book etc.) in the admin user, as the system has only had 1 user for a few years.
    Cheers

You would think Apple, the forefront of Home computing, would have a built in preference selection allowing multiple users on the SAME computer to share simple things like address book and calendar data.
    Seems like a no-brainer.
Its ridiculous that I have to buy a subscription to an online account, send all my personal stuff to some server in California or wherever in the world it is just so that I can share the info with my wife on the computer we share here at home
    Money Grab or what?

if anything one should try a symbolic link with some inherited ACLs to make everything in the address book folder read+write for both users.
"if anything" apple needs to provide an update that streamlines this sharing business, or at least provides a work around that is understandable for the average user. We spent good money on this machine to make some things in life easier, not to become programmers or system managers

  • Can MULTIPLE birthdays on Address Book card show up in iCal?

iCal 2.0.3 - I have a number of cards in my Address Book that list primary party, spouse and several children. I have created in Address Book on a single card a birthday field for EACH of the parties on an Address Book card. However, only the primary party's birthday automatically is transferred to the Birthday calendar in iCal.
The only way I have been able to have all the birthdays shown in iCal is to have a separate Address Book card for each member of the family. Obviously, this bloats the Address Book.
Is there any way that I can accomplish this with one Address Book card with multiple birthday fields?
Thanks in advance for your help.

While you can't list multiple birthdays for multiple members of a family on a single card in Address Book and have them automatically added to the Birthday calendar in iCal, you can by using Dates to iCal donationware manually insert birthdays into the iCal Birthday calendar (http://www.nhoj.co.uk/)
This is great in that it keeps you from having to bloat your Address Book by unnecessarily creating a separate card for each additional member of a family, e.g.

  • How can multiple users share a catalog?

PSE 5 - We have multiple users sign on to the same PC.  The catalog is created on a network drive that all have access to.  Photos added to the catalog by one user are not accessible by another user.  Is the catalog profile-dependant?  Is there some setting I am missing?

The users can open the photos directly in Windows Picture Viewer but, for some users, the catalog looks empty in Photoshop Elements.
    1. Verify that each account is indeed loading the same catalog.  Do Help > System Info within the PSE Organizer to verify the catalog name and location is identical.   Perhaps one or more the accounts is opening another default (empty) catalog.
    2. Ensure the Organizer is showing you all the files:
    a. In View > Media Types, check all the types.
    b. In the Organize pane on the right, check Hidden to see if any of the cataloged photos are marked "hidden".
    c. Do Fine > Clear Date Range.
    d. If Back To All Photos is showing in the upper right, click it.

  • Can multiple users share Aperture Library over network

I'm considering moving over to Aperture because iPhoto is starting to show the strain under the number of RAW pictures I'm uploading. My current iPhoto library is stored on my NAS and is shared between my RMBP and MacMini. If I make the transition over to Aperture will I be able to have the same set-up?
    Thanks
    VP

iPhoto is starting to show the strain under the number of RAW pictures I'm uploading.
What do you consider to be a "strain"?
Poor response time? I suspect, that will be more due to the network access on a NAS than to the library size.
You might try to put your Aperture 3 library on a NAS, but it is not recommended by Apple, see:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
    You will have to ensure,
that you do not open the Library from both your Macs at the same time,
and you will have to ensure, that the library is only on a disk formatted "Mac OS X Extended". SInce your NAS has a different formatting, put the Aperture library onto a disk image on the NAS. You will have to mount this disk image, before you access the library, like recommended here for iPhoto, see: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
But as I said, if poor performance should be your main reason for switching from iPhoto to Aperture, you will not gain much, if you keep the library on a network attached volume, unless you have a very fast network connection.
The best performance you get in Aperture with the library on the fasted drive you have. I keep my Aperture library on the internal SSD and the original master image files (the bulk of the data) on a second internal drive.

  • Can multiple users share a single Email Account?

I set up my email account last night and everything worked perfectly. Messages downloaded from my ISP with no problems. Then I logged out of my user account and logged into my wife's user account. When I clicked on mail to test it, I realized that it is assuming she will be checking mail from a different email account. Is there a way that our seperate user accounts can share the same email account?

Technically, yes, you should be able to do this... the issue is why do you want to? If you set up her user account Mail (or whatever e-mail application you're using) preferences with the same information you used for yours (mail account name, password, SMTP information) and make sure that the "leave message on server" box is checked in the Mail preferences for both user accounts, the messages for that e-mail account can be downloaded to both user accounts. The problem is that each user would have to delete messages meant for the other. Depending on what type of mail account (IMAP, POP) it may also mean that the "new mail" status of a message may not be correct. A message read in one user's account may show up as "read" in the other. It's much tidier for each user to have their own e-mail address.

  • Can Multiple Users Share an iTunes Library?

    Hey all,
There are two user accounts on my MacBook Pro, mine and my wife's. I manage my iTunes library on my account (buy songs, update playlists, automatically download podcasts, etc). When we switch to my wife's account and open iTunes on her side, the library is empty and iTunes prompts her to get started like any first-time user.
Is there a way to share and control the same library across both accounts? I.e. opening and managing iTunes on one account is no different than doing it on the other.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chip

Geez.. What the article describes sounds like what I have in mind, but it looks like some pretty serious permissions tweaking.
The one line that concerns me is this:
"Note that iPhoto (iTunes) will be smart, and will not let two or more users tinker with the shared iPhoto (iTunes) library at once through fast user switching."
My wife and I are typically both always logged in, and we use Fast User Switching to move back-and-forth between accounts. So, if one of us has to close iTunes before the other can tinker with it, that kinda defats the whole purpose.
    Am I reading that right?
Either way, I'm definitely going to back-up my library before trying any of this.
    Thanks for the help,
    Chip

  • Can multiple users share one file for iphoto

I want to be able to have all the user profiles on our iMac access the same files for iPhoto, so when one user adds photos they are there for anyone who logs on.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How can I sync Iphone to a PC calendar then have multiple users share that calendar? Is there an application that does that?

How can I sync Iphone to a PC calendar then have multiple users share that calendar? Is there an application that does that?

If it is actually an exchange calendar, and it's not linked to a specific user, it should be possible to simply add the exchange account to each device in question and have that exchange account only sync the calendar.  Then every user has access to the same calendar and can add/edit entries to the calendar as needed.
The same would apply if it were a Google calendar added via Exchange.
If the calendar is not actually on Exchange, but rather added from an outside source, it will depend on that outside source where the calendar originates.

  • Why is select calendar and address book greyed out? Why can we not select these options?

Why can we not select address books or calendars? Why is this option greyed out in ITunes 12?

You have to make the selection active.
    Go to Select>all, then Select>modify>border.
Another way is to use a stroke:
    Open your picture file
    Go to Select>all
Open a blank layer above this
Go to Edit>stroke(outline) selection. In the  dialog, enter the width of the stroke, choose color, place it inside, ok it.
If you don't like the border, delete the layer with the stroke, and adjust to suit, then do it over starting with step #3

  • Dropbox to share address book over multiple Macs?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone is able to share address book between multiple macs using Dropbox. If anyone other has, let me know how. I'm dying to find an alternative to MobileMe and gmail contact sync.

  • One Computer, Two Users, One Address Book

This question came up in the dim and distant past without a solution and I was wondering if there was one to it in the here and now.
My wife and I share 1 MacBookPro
We each have a user account.
I have a full .Mac account
She has a .Mac Email Account
We would like to have only one address book or at least have the same info in each of our respective address books. (not too big a request?)
I just can't find out how to do this other than her having a full .Mac account too which is just plain expensive overkill just to sync two address books!
Is there a way to do this please?
    MBP 17", 800Mhz G4 Quicksilver (server)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It can certainly be done. If you are sharing one computer, then with the right permissions and linking, you can use the same address book.
All the Address Book information is in a folder Library/Application Support/AddressBook in a user's home directory.
If you make an alias of all the files in that folder from your directory and put them in the same folder in your wife's home directory, and then ensure that both you and your wife have access to read and write all of those files, it should work.
As a result when either of you is using Address Book, you would be using the same files and the same data. Each will see the updates of the other.
If the permissions are not right, AddressBook will hang, and you have to force quit, but otherwise, it seems to work OK.
HAL 9000     As with anything, be sure you have a good backup.

not sure if anyone found a solution to this but I found one at this link.

While in the Address Book press the Menu and than Options. Just type in RSET
(capital letters) and you'll be able to wipe out all your Desktops where the
Wireless synchronization is Not available. You can keep intact the last Desktop
where the Wireless Synchronization is Yes.
