Can my 24", early 2009 i-Mac REALLY handle a 24" external monitor?

I'm aware that I can "technically" hookup an external monitor to my early 2009, 24" i-Mac using the min-DVI port on the back of the computer.  My intent is to use the secondary monitor in Adobe Lightroom 5.0, so that I can view an image from the library full size on one display...while sorting through photos, previewing/weeding out shots from a shoot, etc. on the i-MAC display
However, I'm a bit concerned that my i-MAC (a core 2 duo, 3.06 GHz, with 8GB of RAM, and the
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB) may really start to show its age, and experience significant slowing while working in Lightroom with the second monitor attached.
Does anyone have this same setup (or something very similar), that might be able to tell me about their experience?  Before I shell out the dough for the display (I'm eyeing one right now on Newegg) - I'd like to hear about what to expect.

I would not expect this setup to cause any slowdown.  The Radeon HD 4850 w/512K VRAM has plenty of oomph to support an external display; 24" is no problem.
The bigger issue is Lightroom's own resource needs (it's a hog).  8GB RAM should be fine, but more would be better.
For what it's worth, I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Core2Duo, 8GB RAM and I am able to run Aperture, Photoshop CS6, Illustrator, etc. with an external display with no problems ... and most of the time I'm only using the embedded Intel GPU, not the discrete nVidia 9600.

Lol, figured out the first part. Just for those who may be searching, when you click on the Display Preferences, and click on the arraingment tab... it not only shows where your two screens will be displayed, but the WHITE BAR at the top of one screen is the dock/toolbar. Click and hold to grab this and just slide it over to the screen you'd like it to be on.
You have to release it IN the screen box, not on top of it... and it should pop right over to the new (or old) screen. At any rate, you can put the dock on either (or any) screen that you prefer.
I am thinking of ordering more of these. Lol. 3 monitor setup seems like it would be crazy good.
Still looking for the answer to keeping the new 16" screen on the right without switching between screen #s with that... not expose... Lion feature.
Thanks. Hope my other question has an answer out here.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

  • Screen flickering really bad after unplugging external monitor

    Hello,
Since I updated my Macbook Pro 13' Retina (inch, Early 2013) to Mavericks, almost averytime I unplug my external monitor or TV, the screen starts flickering really bad. This is the screenshot of the issue. Sometimes you can see all the apps opens, but the "flicker" effect takes over the screen, making it impossible to user the computer. The only way I found to use the compuer again is restarting it. It's really weird.

    Howdy inireugg,
We've an article that provides a host of helpful information and tips for resolving issues with displays.
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:

Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the systemYou can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.

  • Mac will not sleep unless external monitor unplugged

Updated Mid 2011, 27" iMac to Yosemite. Computer would not sleep. Checked network settings, sleep settings, unplugged external drives. Finally slept when I unplugged an external monitor. I'm using an old cinema display with an adapter into the Thunderbolt port. Plugged it back in, Mac wouldn't sleep.
Is there a fix for this?

Apparently there is a task running that wants periodic disk access. Have you tried simply looking at Activity Monitor to see if there's a task running that might have been forgotten?
Try creating a temporary, "test" user account. Log out of yours and into the test account. Does that fix anything?

  • How can I set a custom resolution on a MacbookAir for an external monitor?

I've been trying to set a custom resolution on my macbook air for an external monitor but the only options displayed are 1280x1024 and 800x600. How can I bring up more options? Thanks!

Your Mac sets those resolutions (and the display NAME) based on the information your display provides when a query is sent at Startup. If those are the only resolutions shown, then your display has said that is all it can do.
What display is this, and what Interface is being used?
This pane will tell you more about what the display has reported:

  • Can I use an HP Envy TouchSmart 23-d027c as an external monitor

We recently bought an HP Envy TouchSmart 23-d027c to use as our home computer but I was wondering if I can use it as an external monitor for my HP notebook. The guy as BestBuy said I would be able to but I just realized that there's no way to turn on the monitor without turning on the whole computer.
I sometimes work from home with my work laptop and I like to work with dual monitors. If anyone has any ideas on how this can work, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance.

Here are the specs for your HP ENVY 23-d027c TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop Computer. Based on these specs, this model doesn't have a video input of any kind and therefore you will NOT be able to use this AIO computer as a monitor.

  • Can macbookpro be used with the lid closed while using multiple external monitors

I want to use macbook pro with external monitors and be able to close the lid on the laptop, but can't figure out how to make that works with multiple monitors.  I currently use two external monitors with the laptop monitor as my third.  All are independent monitors and I accomplish this using the matrox diamond bvu-195 product (one for each external monitor).  Now I would like to add a third external monitor and be able to close the laptop lid - kind of like you would do with a docking station for a Windows laptop.  Anyone have any suggestions as to how to accomplish this?

Connecting your present two external displays via USB has left your MBP's Mini-DisplayPort available for a third. Depending on the monitor's available inputs, buy a mini-Displayport-to-VGA, MDP-to-DVI, or MDP-to-HDMI adapter and the appropriate cable to make the connection. I would expect that adding a third monitor to your GPU's workload might cause your already slow USB-connected monitors to slow down farther, but you'll have to see whether that's true and, if so, how tolerable it is in your work.
As for what will happen when you close the built-in display, I suspect that what happens if you do that now will continue to happen if you do it with a third monitor connected. If you can now close the display and run the machine in closed-clamshell mode, I expect you'll still be able to do so after adding the third external screen.

  • I changed my Mac Pro early 2009 to Mac Pro 2013.

    After migration my Photoshop CS5 won't start again. I've error code : 213 :5 .

    never migrate adobe products.
undo whatever you've already done.  then run the cleaner and properly install ps cs5, http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
if you need the cs5 installation files and if you follow all 7 steps you can directly download a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/all-adobe-cs5-direct-download-links.html
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a problem downloading, you didn't follow all 7 steps, or your browser does not accept cookies.
the most common problem is caused by failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).

  • How can i clone a copy of Mac OS X to an external drive?

Hi Yesterday the guys at the apple store had to reinstall my OS and they installed OS X 10.6 is there a way to create a copy of this to an external hard drive to use in the future if i need to boot from an external source?
    Cheers
    matt

First, you need to do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, clone your drive to a freshly formatted external drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external drive.
Source means the internal startup drive.
Now, you can use other cloning software but the most reliable and easiest method is what I've described above.

  • Can I set-up Messages on Mac to handle multiple iCloud accts?

I have Messages on my iphone set-up to work with both my phone number and icloud apple ID email so I can send/receive messages on both my phone and mac.
My wife shares the same mac, and we would like to add her acct so she too can send/receive from this machine in addition to her iphone.
When I go to Messages prefs (on the mac) to add an acct, the account types available include AIM, Jabber, Google Talk or Yahoo.  I would expect to see an iCloud option or something Apple specific.
Is there a way to add a second iCloud acct to Messages?
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

    HI,
You can only have one iMessages Account at once.  (the same for the Bonjour Option).
On the iPhone you added the Apple ID that you used in Messages on the Mac.
This would have given you the option to Send and Receive  on either the Mac or iPhone from the iPhone Number and the Apple ID.
You then added the extra email and it gets added to the other device.
You can add it as an extra email on both the iPhone and the Mac version.
    You could...
Add her iPhone Number and email as extras to the iMessages set up (add the current Apple ID in the Mac version to her iPhone then add the other as extras).
However this does mean that everyone gets everyone else's Messages.
    Or...
You create her a Mac User Account on the Mac.
This would allow her to maintain ans sync via iCloud her own Contacts list.  (Using your iCloud ID she could sync the current Contacts List)
Messages does not need to use an iCloud ID, just an Apple one that has been verified.
Then her Apple ID and iPhone link up in iMessages would be separate from yours.

  • Mac not sending signal to external monitor

Hi, I have a 2010 Macbook pro and I'm trying to use my acer monitor as an external for additional desktop space. I've done it before (about a year ago) and it worked perfectly fine, but for some reason when I plug in the cable (it's a DVI) it just lights up my monitor which says no signal, and the mac screen turns blue (as if it were going to readjust the screen for another monitor), but then it just goes back to the normal desktop. I can't move the mouse off screen and the monitor displays nothing. Any ideas?

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to edit the above, but I forgot to mention that after unplugging and plugging it in several times I actually got the monitor to work and display things and I dragged some stuff over to it, but there was a dialogue box about displays I couldn't close and when i clicked "detect monitors" it ended up shutting it down again and I haven't seen it work since.

  • Early 2011 15inch MacBook Pro not displaying on external monitor

I have an early 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro and I tried to connect it to a Samsung U28D590D 4k display.  My computer is recognizing it as a monitor and saying that the output resolution is 2560x1440, which is what I expected considering my graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB and my chipset is an AMD Radeon HD 6490M with 256VRAM.  I just don't know why its not displaying on the monitor.  Any help will be very appreciated.

i did manage to get a little step further and get my mac to ask about resolutions but it still won't appear on the monitor
