Can my computer slow down if I use too much of my solid state drive?

This isn't for my iMac, but for a MacBook pro I am going to get at some time.  I want a solid state drive in it, but they are kind of small.  I could get away with a 256gb because I use about 109gb on my iMac and plan to use a little less on the MacBook pro.  Is this ok if I use 50% of my solid state  or more, or will it slow down my computer. If I must get the 512 I will, but I am only 14 and this is a lot of money for me to spend or I guess for anyone. I don't want to be cheap about it, but I want to get the best for my $$.
Thanks buggy687

Yes, it will be fine and no it will not slow down.

  • Computer slows down more each time I print a PDF. It reverts to a reasonable speed if I restart the computer. Everything worked normally until I installed Avast Virus Protection.

I have Windows XP and Adobe Reader XI. My printer is a Ricoh Aficio 240W.
My computer normally lacks internet access. I briefly connected it to the internet to install the full version of Avast Antivirus, then disconnected it from the internet again, and it has been disconnected from the internet since.
After I installed Avast the computer began acting screwy when I printed PDF files. I uninstalled Avast but the screwiness continues.
The image in the upper left corner was taken after doing one printing of a PDF file. I'm pretty confident AcroRd32.exe. is Adobe Reader. Notice that after running one print Adobe Reader is using about 50 CPU's.
The image to the right of that was taken after doing two printings of a PDF file. Notice that after running two prints there are two AcroRd32.exe processes using 50 CPU's.
The image below the other two was taken after doing three or four printings of a PDF file. Notice that after three printings one AcroRd32.exe process is using 50 CPU's and two others are using about 25. After about three printings my computer slows down dramatically, and it keeps getting slower the more prints I do.
When I restart the computer it reverts back to normal. Can anyone think of a better solution to this problem of increasing slowness than restarting the computer every two PDF prints?
My computer currently has no virus protection, although Windows Firewall is up. Someone at Avast I briefly mentioned this too thinks this should not happen and he was wondering if the computer has some sort of virus...but before I removed Avast it told nothing about viruses that I know of. I honestly do not know if anyone scanned the computer with Avast before removing Avast, but I suspect it was scanned before the removal of Avast. I suppose this could be the result of some virus...but then the computer behaves quite normally, except when I print PDFs. I'm wondering if Avast changed some settings in my printer program or Adobe programs....
I have CCleaner. Every time I analyze my computer to look for stuff to remove to speed up the computer it shows Internet Explorer history files, and sometimes Internet Explorer temporary internet files despite not being online. If I click on Internet Explorer to go onto the internet, I am told I am working offline.
    Thanks. Guesses are welcomed.

The layout changed when I posted. Therefore, what I mean by the image in the upper left corner is the image at the top. What I mean by the image to the right of that is the image in the middle of the other two. What I mean by the image below the other two is, of course, the image at the bottom.

  • [Solved]Computer slow down and freeze during data transfer syncing

    Hello,
Everytime I make a data transfer, my computer slow down, and sometimes freeze during a few seconds, work for a fraction of seconds and freeze again. I don"t understand why.
As an example, here is a bench of files i transfered during a syncing with Grsync
It took about 12h to sync 64Gb.
I've read a lot of topics talking about this problem but nothing works. I tried to switch off the SWAP and setting the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.background_dirty_ratio but nothing works.
I'm making the trasfer between two Western Digital USB 2.0 external hard drive in NTFS.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance

It seems it was beacause one of my external hard drive was about to die. I performed the same operation with 2 Western Digital external hard drive 1To USB3 and it works perfectly.

I reconnected the original powered hub that I thought probably caused the problem and this time it shut down the whole computer. When I rebooted everything now works perfectly. The system reset. I tried another powered hub and it didn't have the same effect so the old one is heading for the bin and with fingers crossed all systems are now working perfectly. Trying to reset PRAM or reset the SMC didn't work but causing the same power issue did. Thanks for your input though. It did get me to think what was the original cause.

  • OIM 11g using too much memory and not releasing it when shutting down

    Hello,
we have a problem with OIM 11g using too much memory (about 5gb) and it's not releasing it at shutdown (4gb still used).
We are using a VM with RedHat Linux 5.6. Originally we had 4gb RAM + 2gb swap file. We installed Admin Server, OAM, OIM and SOA on that machine but quickly realised we couldn't run all 4 programs at once in 6gb. AdminServer could run with 2 other products, but it was a tight fit in memory.
So we increased the RAM to 8gb (still 2gb swap file). But then our problem occured : I start the Admin Server (2.7gb total memory used), then OAM (4.6gb total memory used) and then OIM. After it started the server is now using 9.6gb of memory (~300mb of free memory) ! The problem gets even better : after I shut down everything (OIM, OAM, admin server) the "top" command show that there is still 4gb of memory used even tho nothing else is running on the server ! There is absolutely no other process (other than root stuff) running and no other users connected to the machine. After a reboot, it shows 400mb of memory used. I tried restarting the programs and it did the same thing.
Our intuition is that there might be a memory leak or some bug in OIM that might use up almost all the free memory and it's not releasing it upon shutdown. It might have been there before we increased the memory but have not noticed it since memory was already tight.
Anyone encountered the same problem ? Any idea ? Any suggestion to narrow down the problem ?
    Thank you

You can adjust the memory settings for WLS by editing the setSOADomainEnv.sh file that can be found in your /middleware/user_projects/domains/<domain>/bin/ folder. There is an argument called PORT_MEM_ARGS which is used to set your Java memory arguments. This way you can decrease/increase the amount of memory used by each managed server.
I usually type "ps -ef | grep oracle" to see what processes are running by the oracle user. This way the output doesn't get cluttered with root processes.

  • Can I use a Solid state drive in my 21 inch iMac

Can I use a Solid state drive in my 21 inch iMac if so what manufaturer is recommended?

Yes. I have used and recommend OWC's Mercury models and OCZ's Vertex 3 models. They do work in Macs. Depending upon the model you have you should get either 3 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s drive. That will depend upon your computer's disk drive bus support - SATA II or SATA III, respectively.

  • I just got an iPad 2 16 gb and was wondering how I can upload pictures from a micro sd card but my iPad is saying cannot connect device using too much power. I have tried a 16 gb micro sd card and 4 gb micro sd card. Can anyone help please??

I got an iPad 2 and I cannot get my pictures to upload from a micro sd card as the iPad is saying device not accepted using too much power. Can anyone help? My iPad 2 is a 16 gb and my micro sd card is 4 gb

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit. First download the pics to your computer.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

  • Lacie "using too much power", USB disabled, can't access ext HD?

Last night, moving items to my Ext HD, i got an error message about the USB "using too much power" and then it disabled it.
    I'm using a 15'' 2006 Macbook with 10.6.7 operating system.
I've googled the issue and have run out of ideas.
The Ext HD is a 500GB LaCie Little Disk New Pack USB2.0 Black
    Restarted the macbook.
Booted the macbook into safe mode.
I've tried plugging something else into both my USB ports (it detected the item, a camera card reader) and was usable.
When I plug in my Lacie Ext HD now using its usb cord, the blue light on the Lacie flashes as if its detectable/inuse but there's nothing in my Mac menus showing access to it.
    HELP ?
    Error Message:
Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your usb devices have been disabled.
To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again.

Maybe the disk will work through a separately powered USB Hub?

  • Can I use a solid state drive (SSD) with a G4 1 GHz powerbook? If so, how do I do it?

    Hi:
Can I use a solid state drive (SSD) with a G4 1 GHz powerbook? If so, how do I do it? Thanks.
    fromx001

fromx001 I believe you can use a SSD as internal drive, of course make sure to buy an ide/ata. There are all sorts of sizes up to 480 GB also in the ide/ata standard. You should however research carefully your purchase, as the performances of your SSD are going to have to rely on firmware "garbage collection", as the older operating systems haven't been written with SSD in mind.
Mac Man JW: some people depend on Classic as a brody said, other people need a phone modem from time to time, other people use the laptop in harsh environments, and at -15C and below, LCD screens easily crack and break; NOT the powerbook which has hot air towards the screen (and it's a machine that heats quite a lot). My alu Powerbook 12", which was *not* treated with velvet gloves, only once had a cracked screen: a cleaning lady had stepped over it (!!!!) no joke. And in normal / light use today, it is still pretty decent and usable.

  • I made an extra backup on a USB device and now I can't get it back because "the device uses too much power". Why didn't it a few weeks ago and how can I use the device anyway?

because "it uses too much power"
I did'nt get that message a few weeks ago when I used Snow Leopard and now I can't approach the files I saved on the external disk.
Question 1: How do I solve the problem? (Without going back to Snow Leopard)
Q2: Why this parential supervision by Apple?

    Get a powered hub
USB is cranky, you're not the first (probably not the last) to have this happen.

When I connect my Nikon coolpix S9200 to the camera adaptor I get a message saying this device uses too much power, how can I overcome this?

You are probably seeing this message because the camera uses the same port to charge it. The iPad can not supply the power to charge devices from it's dock connector. Also if you use the SD card adapter you are not using up the camera's battery for transferring the photos.
