Can My iBook G4 Hold Leopard?

I have an iBook G4, here are the specs:
Processor: 1.33 GHz
The rougly 60GB of disc space it came with
RAM: 256 or 512MB (supports up to 1.25 or 1.5GB, but I just have what came in it, though I'm not sure which is in mine)
I have a disc to upgrade it to Tiger, but I'd love to go one step further and upgrade to Leopard. However, I'm not sure if my laptop will support this. I've read that I need more RAM to install Leopard. I've also read discussions of people who have the same model I do, and other people told them to install Leopard to fix whatever problem they may have been having. So, should I assume I need more RAM, or should I assume it's safe without it? Also, I'm not entirely sure whether or not I have 256MB or 512MB or what, and I can't get on it to check. That's part of the reason I'm trying to reinstall the OS, because it won't start up, and I've narrowed it down to this solution, but I figured I'd just upgrade at the same time. So, should I add more memory, or will it work as is?
Also, is it extremely difficult to add a new (larger) hard drive, so I can store more stuff? Like.. 320GB. Is this a hard exchange, or simple as pulling out the old one and putting in the new one?
And one last question. I'm sure this is a dumb crazy question, but would it be possible to switch an iBook G4 to an Intel chip in order to support Snow Leopard? I probably wouldn't actually do it, I'm just curious if it's possible.

If the same computer is having difficulty as suggested was the case
in your earlier post, were any of the ideas brought up then & there
tried in regard to resolving them, back within this other thread?
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2230651&tstart=0
If the computer is a 1.33GHz 14" iBook G4, the fixed RAM as shipped
would have been a 256MB chip on the logic board; but the later 1.42GHz
14" iBook G4 would have 512MB on the board. {Either one could take a
1024MB 200-pin SO-DIMM PC2700-DDR333 upgrade RAM chip.}
An iBook G4 14" with 1.33GHz processor, shipped with a version of 10.3
on installer discs and installed in the hard disk drive; the later model 14"
and 12" (mid-2005) shipped with versions of Tiger 10.4.x on DVD discs.
The hard drive, as indicated in the earlier thread link above, was suggested
as a probable cause of earlier issues back in November. So, it likely still is.
The moving parts and wear items generally are the first to check into, when
or if a computer stops working; that is, after the more obvious likely causes.
Power issues, such as they are in a portable (battery, charger, DC-in board,
and PMU reset) can also contribute to a failure to start. An overly full HDD
can result in the corruption of the hard drive's basic directory and if that is
bad, then a tool such as Disk Warrior could be used to rebuild the directory.
An upgrade to a new OS X over the top of a damaged hard disk drive will not
fix the underlying low-level drive problems; if only directory damage, a repair
via Disk Warrior is likely. If failing hard drive damage, a new drive is needed.
If there is nothing to be saved or salvaged from the ailing drive, and it is open
to experimentation, then the computer could be booted from an OS X install
disc and the Disk Utility on there may be used to "secure erase" one-pass to
wipe the drive content, and then choose to reformat the hard disk drive, the
partition map APM would be used, and for format scheme HFS+ before a new
installation is tried, could at least let you know if the old original hard disk drive
has a few more hours run-time in there before a catastrophic failure costs all
the data and work on a computer. You can sometimes get an old worn drive to
work awhile longer by fixing it with Disk Warrior, and/or totally wiping & reformat
the drive, so no old directories or data exists, and start over.
You could try recovering existing data from that iBook's drive via FireWire Target
Disk Mode, and use a FireWire cable to access data in another Mac. Such data
could be saved to a blank CD or DVD media in the healthy Mac for later recovery.
There are other ideas which could also be tried or used in these matters.
And there is every chance an installation of Tiger or Leopard *will not*
fix this issue, by itself. There is more going on.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • 4/30/2011.  Can you please help me.  I have an iBook G4 with Leopard OS 10.5. Yet how do I correct Website movies going flow-pause-flow-pause-flow etc?  Chuck Y Chicago

4/30/2011.  Can you please help me.  I have an iBook G4 with Leopard OS 10.5 and latest Safari updates and maximum Ram (512 or 640 kb).  Yet how do I correct Website movies going flow-pause-flow-pause-flow etc?  The problem is with the iBook, not the website and movies.  Thank you.  Chuck Y Chicago

5/2/2011.  Thank you all for your replies.  My iBook is in the third group of the website you referred me to.  I bought it July 5, 2004 at CDW near here.  It had OS 10.3.6.  1GB (GHz.  Power PC G4.), opaque white case. Its screen is 14.1 inches.  Soon after I bought it I had its 128 RAM raised to 640 RAM, to work with maximum capability for converting VCR recorded videos/movie into digital files and burning these onto DVDs.  Later I had an Airport card installed.  As time passed I opened the apple icon (upper left hand corner of the screen), and Softwate Update, and eventually had this install OS 10.5.8.  At first It could only be updated to OS 10.4.  But then after several years I bought Leopard OS 10.5.8 from the Apple store near here.  By then Leopard had been adapted to work on iBook G4.  Its specifications are described with the same Apple icon and About this Mac.
It will play You Tube and similar websites OK.  But videos/movies from websites such as hulu.com, ABC, CBS and so on, it displays a pattern of flow-pause-flow-pause-flow-pause-flow and so on.
I thought first to see if this forum would have any suggestions.
I think probably that its CPU has reached its limit; later Mac laptops have greater CPUs.
Many thanks to you all.   C Yopst   Chicago

  • Can an iBook G4 A1054 800MHz run Leopard 10.5?

Can an iBook G4 Model: A1054 800MHz laptop run and install Leopard 10.5?
I have been trying to install 10.5 on my ibook but once I select my language it keeps saying Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated,
    Thank you inadvance!

Click here for information. You'll need a retail DVD and not one which originally shipped with a Mac.

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

  • Can't open iTunes in Leopard...

I recently upgraded my iBook G4 to Leopard OS X. All is running smoothly except iTunes. When I attempt to open it, the message reads
"The file iTunes Library cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
I can only get it open if I put in a CD so it opens automatically. All of my music is still there, but I cannot open iTunes without inserting a CD. I updated to the newest version of iTunes and have tried restarting my computer, but I still get the same message and cannot open it.
What do I do? I know my music is not lost, but I cannot simply open it up and play! Has anyone else experienced a similar problem or know how to fix it?

Same here. I cannot launch Aperture. Icon bounces about 6 times in the dock, then nothing. The startup window just stays there until I force quit.
I, too, have repaired permissions, thrown away aperture plist (preferences) restarted my MacPro. My lastest attempt was a reinstall of Aperture.
    Still nothing.
I know its not totally a Leopard thing as I have been able to launch it on occasion. I have not been able to pinpoint why it works every once in a while (about once every dozen or so attempts)
This has me puzzled. Its also very irritating.
    Anyone?

  • Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine?

Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine?  I did not make a new partition on my external HD.  My reason for doing this is to import data from Quicken 2007 to Quicken Essentials and then upgrade back to Lion.  Can I restart and hold down the "OPTION" key upon start up that will take me to Apple Recovery HD and recover from time machine?  I'm a noob at these sort of things.  I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Probably not. See Kappy's going back to SL from Lion guide.

  • How can my ibook convert a VIDEO_TS folder or VIDEO_TS.IFO file to a .dv fi

5/27/2009. how can my ibook convert a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder or VIDEO_TS.IFO file to a .dv file? That is, in order to do some editing on it? Will QuickTime pro do this? Will Roxio Toast do this? How??? Many thanks. C. Yopst, Chicago area.

Use [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> (free) to convert the VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder to DV. You will also need the [MPEG-2 component|http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2> ($20) to be able to open and convert these files.
This is of course assuming you have full rights to the footage or permission from the copyright holder to use the files.

  • How much RAM can my Macbook Pro hold MAX?

Can my Macbook Pro hold a MAX of 8GB or is it just 4GB? I'm getting different answers online and I'm a little annoyed at this point. My computer specs currently are:
    15 inch Laptop
MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Got my computer in 2009.
At Crucial.com it says it can hold up to 8GB when I select my computer processor speed from their list, but I noticed it saying DDR3 (and I don't know what that means to be honest). Here's the link:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=7F3A5584A5CA7304
To the best of my knowledge I selected the correct computer, which I own, from their list.
Under "About This Mac", on my computer, it says DDR2 for the memory, on Crucial.com it says DDR3. As a result I'm confused and will that cause problems?
I'll be getting my RAM kit from Crucial.com, so do I buy the 4BG kit, because that's all my laptop can handle, or is it OK to get the 8GB kit, which says DDR3?
I do a lot of video and audio, so I would like to get my RAM up to 8 GB if it will.
    Thanks

One more question friend....You've been so helpful
Will these two sticks work together on my machine?
    2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=B54C51B4A5CA7304
    along with a...
    4GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-CT51264AC800-200-pin-SODIMM-PC2-6400/dp/B001RB21JE
So these two would add up to 6GB total. Now the ONLY DIFFERENCE that I see is the 2GB stick is PC2-5300(667Mhz)speed and the 4GB stick is PC2-6400(800Mhz)speed. I understand that my machine won't run at the 800Mhz speed that the PC2-6400 stick is designed for, cause my machine says 667 under the memory info. From what I read online, it's ok to put a higher Mhz stick in there, it will just cap at 667Mhz speed? But.......both sticks are DDR2, which is right for my computer, but will the 667 MHz with a 800 Mhz be a huge no-no to run together? At this point I think that is my main concern! If I can't do this, than I think I'll have to go with the 2x2GB kit for 4GB total, but I REALLY would like to run 6GB.
    Shew.... :P
    Thanks again!

  • Can Yosemite read a snow leopard Time Machine backup

Can Yosemite read a snow leopard Time Machine backup. Once I installed Lion over SL and it was a disaster since I could not get any docs or photos back, so had to put SL back on my old iMac.
Will 10.10 give the same problem or is there a way to migrate the old 10.6.8 data to 10.10?
    Thanks

Yes, you can do that. The only limitation is that you can't encrypt the backup volume.

  • How much RAM can my ibook take?

The maximum is 1.25 Gb with the addition of one 1 Gb SODIMM. Choose a reputable vendor who tests and guarantees compatibility with your model Mac.

  • I have a MacBook 5,1 (13.3" aluminum from 2007 or 2008). Automatic updates will only let me get to OSX 10.5.8.  Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard, Lion 10.6 or even 10.6.8?  Also, will I have any issues with my iPhone if it's updated to iOS 7.1?

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.8 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mountain Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

    Hi, you need 10.6.8 first...
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

  • In how many different computers can I install my snow leopard?

In how many different computers can I install my snow leopard?
The one that came when I bought my Macbook Pro.

Kappy, I believe that he's asking about Snow Leopard, not Lion. Your answer would be correct in reference to Lion purchased from the Mac App Store, but not Lion shipped as original OS on a new Mac.
derojas, assuming you have a standard OEM, it-came-with-the-computer Snow Leopard installer, you are licensed to use it only on that one computer. You are not licensed to install it on any others. Many OEM discs can install only on the specific hardware model with which they shipped, anyway.
If you have a standard retail installer, it's technically possible to install it on any Mac capable of running Snow Leopard. However, again, the license grants you the freedom to install it on only one Mac at a time (i.e. you'd have to delete it from one Mac before you could install it on another).
There are family packs and other multi-licensing arrangements that permit the owner to install Snow Leopard on more than one Mac. You need to check the license to find out how many and what other restrictions might apply.
