I have an iMac with Model Identifier 5,1. It has a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3GB of Memory, a 500GB HD with almost 400GB available. Can I run Lion on this machine?

Be advised though that Lion is somewhat of a memory hog; since your machine is already maxed out, I'd suggest compensating for that by having only one memory intensive app open at a time (such as a photo editing app); otherwise you may encounter crashes or beachballing.

Be aware that your iMac can have 4 GB of RAM installed, but it will only access a little over 3 GB of that RAM ( between 3.2-3.4GBs)

So, your iMac will run a little slower on OS X 10.7 Lion. (If your iMac was capable of running OS X 10.9 Mavericks, it would run even slower with no way to get any real additional, significant RAM into your system).

If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUoMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.

But before you can do that you must update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 by installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 update. You can use the Time Machine backup files of the iMac onto your MacBook without any problem because your MacBook has got a newer version than the one the iMac has got. However, you shouldn't do it in your iMac, and if you do that, you might damage OS X because your Time Machine apps will replace Lion apps.

As an additional thought: I had this same model iMac and although you can install 4 GB RAM, it will only address just over 3 GB. Since Lion is somewhat of a memory hog, you really will not be very happy with the performance using anything less than 4 GB - and even 4 GB is a bit of a minimum; fine for basic needs, but any photo or video editing will require more than that.

You could partition the drive, I read that Time Machine will work on if you HD partition.
BUT, it will do you no good if you HD fails.
Usually, if a HD fails it's the entire drive that is dead not just a partition.
So your time machine back would be on a dead disk, useless!

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

You have a 2006 model iMac that can only handle up to 3 GBs of RAM.
OS X, by itself, needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM to do its stuff smooth, quickly and efficiently.
Every update and iteration of OS X uses more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.
You start running a high resource app, like Lightroom, along with OS X and your iMac is going to take a pretty good hit on performance.
It all boils down to not having nearly enough RAM memory for the application and tasks you require.
