Can My IMac run FCPX?

I mean run it decently without problems? I have an iMac with 2.66 GHz Intel Core duo, 2 GB memory (800 MHz?) DDR2 SDRAM with Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. Yesterday I upgraded OS by buying a disc at Apple Store so now I have 10.6.3 -- but website says I need 10.6.7 for FCPX.
Questions:
1 -- Why did they sell me out-dated version of Snow Leopard? Is there a way to upgrade it online for free? (When I click software updates, it says nothing about OS.)
2 -- I see FCPX runs better with 4 GB memory. Can I install another 2 GB of memory in my iMac or is it maxed out?
3 -- Is my graphics card adequate?
4 -- I understand minimum requirements for FCPX from apple store, but often times applications run like crap on minimum requirements. I have been using FCE 4.0 for sometime and was thinking of upgrading to FCP even before X was announced, but the real question is do I need a new computer? That would make FCPX a huge expense I'm not sure I could afford.
Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

They probably sold you the version that was available at that moment. Updates are free of charge and can be downloaded at any time. If for some reason you can't get it through Software Update, it's here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Your graphics card is not officially supported but other users have reported that they have installed FCP X nevertheless. See this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
Also: the Appstore will block the purchase if it detects unsupported hardware.
Yes, you should be able to upgrade the RAM

  • Will me 2006 iMAC run FCPX after upgrades?

    I have a late 2006 iMac running osx 10.7.3 with 2.16 ghz core 2 duo, 3gb 667mhz ddr2 sram and an ATI radeon x1600 128mb.
I am looking to put FCPX on it.  I lost FCP7 when i upgraded the OS but I have moved to FCPX on my new iMAC.  I am wanting to use the old iMAC for a secondary computer.  Will this run FCPX?

Unfortunately, no.  The graphics card is not supported.

Yes, I had to purchase it on my 2010 Mini which is a media server - it only has 2GB RAM but I could buy it on this and not my 2008 Mac Pro 8 core machine with 14GB RAM!  It actually runs on the Mac Pro but as the graphics card is 'incompatible' you cannot purchase.
I've not actually tried running it on the Mini where it was originally loaded but as Jeaux said do look at maxing out your Mini's memory.

  • Can my iMac run Lion in both 32-bit and 64-bit?

I'm trying to use an audio/midi interface (for music recording) that is formatted 32-bit. Can I easily switch between 32-bit and 64-bit on my new iMac without affecting the performance of the iMac?
    Thanks!

OS X Lion is a 64 bit operating system to run only on 64 bit processors, there is no 32 bit mode.
However you should be able to run 32 bit software, it just uses half the registers.
What more likely is the problem is the software hasn't been updated for OS X Lion, not as much if it uses 32 or 64 bit code.
You really shouldn't have to worry about such things, if the software doesn't run, buy a older Mac with 10.6 used and use that instead.

  • Why i can't run fcpx on iMac 3.06 Ghz core 2 duo with 16Gb ram?

I Can't run FCPX on my iMac.
It's working in theory, but it's stopping playback even without any effect, (video frames were dropped during playback - message), i can't preview any effect, as loading preview taking for ever.
I recently upgrade RAM from 4Gb to 16Gb 1067 Mhz DDr3, and I thought that's make a difference but not.
I have latest Lion 10.8.1 update. FCPX ver 10.0.5.
I try to work on 1080 video files located on main HDD , not external. they are from digital camera, 1920 x 1080, 1080p and codecs H264 linear PCM, 29.97 fps stereo.
    Any suggestion?

You have loads of power so something is not  OK.
Is your internal HD more than 80% full?
For a start trash your preferences using http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Incidentally if you are using 50p/60p footage, that could be the problem especially on an internal HD.
You should always transcode 50p/60p AVCHD to ProRes 422.
Do that and I am sure you will see an improvement.

  • IMac monitor goes to black while running FCPX

I am running FCPX on the 27" iMac (i3) with 16GB ram.  After about an hour, the monitor (sometimes) will simply shutdown.  I can still hear the audio and the control would still work.  I am able to see the desktop via my LOGMEIN account, so I know the computer has not crashed.  After saving and shutting down the computer, it takes about 3 - 6 reboots until the monitor will turn back on.  This seems to me to be a GPU issue that is being taxed by FCP and it takes awhile for it to wake up.  I have brought the computer to Apple and the ran tests on it for the last week and could not recreate the issue.  They did not, however, use FCPX to test the video.  I am going to pick up the computer today and per their instructions reinstall FCPX.
Has anyone else had this or heard about this type of problem?

    Hi,
Check the monitor and cable on another PC.  Alternatively try another known good monitor and cable.

  • I've just bought a 2nd hand iMac running 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN up and running. The Applications Printers doesn't have an HP driver

I've just bought a reconditioned iMac running OSX 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN printer up and running. I used a Firewire cable to transfer all my stuff over to the iMac from a Power PC G5. However, the printer driver disappeared. The Print & Scan pane in System Preferences is now empty and when I press the + to add a printer the Add Printer pane has nothing in it either. Apple says os 10.7.5 already has printer software installled, but not on my iMac. It says in its list of compatible printers that it supports HP Laserjet 2200 (is absence of the 'DN' suffx siginifcant?) Apple also says to use Software Update to check if software is needed. Manual downloading from Apple, who say they've taken over from HP for this software doesnt' work either - I get a two-part download, one file is an unopenable '.dmg' document and the other is a '.dmg.part' document, similarly unopenable. I'm completely stumped. The HP Laserjet 2200DN is an excellent printer that serves all my needs but I'm beginning to think it may be too old for the iMac, but I sincerely hope not. Anybody out there with workable advice about how to solve this issue? I'd love to hear from you.
    Alex Carr

Firstly, in Safari you will find a button on the right side of the toolbar: note the downward pointing arrow. If you click on that you will get the download progress bar.
I don't know what may be the problem with getting the driver working. I suggest you open Print & Scan preferences. CTRL- or RIGHT-click anywhere in the blank Printers list and click on the "Reset printing system" item in the context menu.
Assuming you have installed the printer drivers you downloaded by running the installer that appears after you mount the .dmg file, click on the Add [+] button to Add a printer. A window should open with your printer listed, hopefully (the printer must be turned on and already connected to the computer. Do a direct connection while getting this configuration set up.) Select the printer. Now, if the driver model name does not appear in the "Use:" dropdown menu, you will need to look for it in the list of available drivers. Once found, select it, then click on the Add button.

  • Can I access my icloud mail using a PowerPC G4 800hz imac running OS10.4.11?

I have an old PowerPC G4 800hz imac.  I am running mac OSX 10.4.11 on it.  I have a mac mini and an ipad that I use normally for accessing mail from my icloud account.  This morning I tried to access mail on the Power PC but kept getting error messages saying that it could not load mail.  Is there something about icloud that now requires later versions of OS10?  Can I even run them on the Power PC, it recall reading that I can't.  Perhaps I could open a GMail account and access icloud via it?  Ideas please.

You can access email from an existing iCloud account using Tiger - the method is described here:

    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • Can't Print to Canon ImagePROGRAF 600 with IMAC running Mavericks

I have a new IMAC running Mavericks connected to a networked Canon Plotter. I can plot to it using my old MacBook Pro running snow leopard with the 2009 Driver Ver. 2.17. And my office mate can print to it using a 2009 IMAC running mavericks with the 2012 Driver and ver. 3.10. When I go to print, in the page set-up of the print window I can only select MANUAL for the paper feed, I can't change to cassette or Roll, and then an alert pops up saying: "Manual is not available..."
If I ignore that and continue trying to print I get a printer error message say: "Open error: Try turning the printer off and back on again..."  This doesn't work either.
I've tried going backwards in software generations but that only creates more problems. The Mountain lion version allowed me select MAUAL or CASSETTE in the page set up window but then the ImagePROGRAF Preview said "That function is not support by this printer." Has any one experienced this and solved it?  Thanks.

I think this could be related to a communication problem between the Mac and iPF. I don't have an iPF600 but do have an iPF8400 and iPF9400S. I downloaded the v3.10 driver for 10.8 and installed it on 10.9.5. I then created a dummy IP address and selected the iPF600 driver. When I first tried to print I got the following pop-up.
As this IP address was not connected to any printer I cancelled this window and then found the same symptom as you i.e. Only having Manual and selecting it resulted in an error window appearing. I also found that when I changed to the Main menu, the Media Type drop menu was stuck at Plain Paper.
I then created another printer to the iPF8400 but using the iPF600 driver. When I selected to print, I got the pop-up again. This time I entered my password and then found that the drop menus worked in Page Setup and Main.
So when you added the iPF600 to Printers & Scanners, did you get the pop-up above?
Also, if you select the Main menu, is the Get Information button available?

  • Can I get iPhone 3GS backup off of an iMac running OSX 10.5 to restore the data on a new iPhone 5?

I bought a new iPhone 5 for my wife because her old 3GS was at its end.  I made sure to back up the old phone on her old iMac running OSX 10.5.  Got the new phone home plugged it in to the computer and failure ensued... Can't sync because the iTunes is too old, can't upgrade iTunes because the computer is too old... I have a backup on the computer is there any way to move it to my newer iMac running 10.8 to get some of her data back?  I tried to think ahead by backing up but failed to think about incompatibility issues... Any help would shorten my time in the doghouse,

You can certainly move the backup files but that will do nothing for the apps or media that is on the device.  Backups do not contain apps or media.
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
For the apps and media it will be necessary to move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.  Creating a new user account on the new computer would be a good idea if you both use iTunes and want to keep your media seperate.

  • How can i upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

How can I upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

With the above listed config that I have (iphoto 7.1.5 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8), how can I move my iPhoto library from this old iMac (2006) to my NEW iMac (2011) that is running iPhoto 9.5.1 ?
To open an iPhoto 7.1.x version in iPhoto '11 you need to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader. See this Support document:
iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrade
Download and install the upgrader,  then run it on your iPhoto 7.1.5 library. After that, iPhoto will be able to open your library and upgrade it to version 9.5.1. And you will be able to merge the libraries with if Library Manager.

How did you copy files to the external drive, and what files did you copy? Did you drag and drop in the Finder? Use a clone utility? What files did not successfully copy?
If you reformatted the drive as part of your install, then you won't be able to recover any files from the drive. Reverting back to (reinstalling) 10.4 will not help you.
Do you have a complete-drive backup of your old system?
