Can my mac book accept lion?

I have a MacBook, that was purchased in 2009, that is currently operating on OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), I was wondering if this Macbook has the capacity to run on Lion ( OS 10.7) I am trying to get this laptop through the next two years of college, in hopes that I will get a new MacBook Pro for graduation. What is the best way to help my MacBook along for the next two or so years? thanks!

Also, you may check into the total capacity of the installed RAM memory chips; since
the computer may be able to see an upgrade in this area, which can help it run better.
Be sure to get quality spec parts from reputable Mac-centric venders who test their
product for use in Apple computers, & guaranty them. macsales.com + crucial.com.
The correct and matching parts for an upgrade need to be for your model exactly.
Due to the vintage, however, there isn't much upward mobility in RAM upgrade:
Maximum Memory    6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
•MacBook: How to remove or install memory
So, that'd be a 4GB in one slot, and a 2GB in the other: for 6GB total. Not sure if any
gain beyond 6GB would be noticed or seen by the computer if two 4GB chips used.
A good amount of free unused hard disk drive capacity helps the system and apps
run better, since your Mac will rely on Virtual Memory (HDD swap file temp space)
to leverage, due to the lack of actual chip RAM.
Be sure to make and keep an adequate backup off the computer, for purposes of
restoring and duplicate files; in case the hard drive in the Mac fails; also in addition
to TimeMachine, an externally enclosed self-powered (not bus powered) hard drive
is good for creating a bootable full-system clone of entire HDD content. This may
be used should the internal drive fail, to run the computer from. Utilities to make
clones include SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner, and others. Bombich software's
CCC seems to have a fairly good track record.
Good luck & happy computing!

Try doing a click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".

can I uninstall parallels 5 from a mac book with lion installed

Just to add to the conversation with some helpful information.
Prior to install i was more worried about finding a Quicken replacement than anything (decided on iBank).  I installed Lion and then realized as I was going through my system that Parallel 5 set up for my previous employer.  As suspected, it did not work. So I upgraded Parallels planning to eventually set it up again in the future including reinstalling the version of windows.  When I finally logged on with after the upgrade, all my files, etc. was still there.  Shocking but true.  Double check to see if this occured with any one else.  Good luck.

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck

  • I am still running OS X snow leopard can my mac book handle the jump to yosemite

I have not updated the OS X because I was comfortable with the set up and honestly too lazy to figure out the quirks of a new system.I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8   Now my safari browser is completely out of date and I can't view any web pages.  Can my mac book pro 2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 handle the upgrade to OS X yosemite? Or will this just completely slow down the computer?

    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Increasingly FCP runs to 104 degrees C when operating. This can damage MAC BOOK PRO RETINA components, shortening their life-span.
Can you suggest what I should do apart from shutting down word documents and other software, Parallels, Windows 7 when using FCP?
I am gravely concerned with this high heat. I have to use a remote keyboard it is so hot, but gravely concerned with with the damage the heat is doing to to MAC BOOK PRO RETINA.
ironic - given I switched to Mac from PC this year JUST for  FCP editing.
BTW - I am a film lecturer advising thousands of K-12 teachers and a have a report to deliver to the Education Department shortly.
    Please advise. Many thanks. Schbang

You didn't mention what sort of work you're doing - if you're just cutting video this shouldn't happen.
My suggestion would be to optimize all of your media to ProRes .
Even though PR is a much larger file it's much easier on the CPU. Playing back compressed media is like rendering all day.
I routinely use an old 2007 MBP with a core 2 duo and FCP7. I can cut and color correct with no problem at all using ProRes LT files. The only time it gets hot is during long renders.
I have the laptop elevated on a pedestal that allows air to pass underneath . During long renders I  point a small fan at it which often cools it enough to shut the internal fans down.
All that said, I know the retina is a more compact design and components are much closer to each other.
So, I'd be interested to hear from another retina owner.
    Good luck.

  • Can I change wifi channel on mac book pro (Lion)?

After installing Lion I have WiFi connection time out problems on my mac book pro.
After much effort when the macbookpro wifi is able to be connected with my NETGEAR router (wifi setting set on channel 11), connection is slow (speed=1 or 5) and the channel is 6 not 11. Can I change channel (on mbpro)?

Channels are set by the access point - your Netgear.  If your Netgear has 2 or more antennas, it may support a multi-channel mode which can be a little confusing since you could very well have it say "11" but your MAC say "6".  Also make sure "automatic" channel selction in the Netgear is OFF (see below).
When I encounter problems like this, and it used to work fine, it usually turns out to be one of::
    - Interference from phones, 2.4 GHz is used by many cordless phones and headsets.  Having one near your MAC or between your MAC and the Netgear will knock you off of WiFi.
    - Interference from other access points.  If anybody near you is also on Ch 11, then your MAC will struggle to connect and be very slow.
    - Automatic channel selection can cause constant channel hopping.  MAC OSX takes up to 3 minutes to discover the channel has changed.  I always turn this feature off in the Access Point.  You should check to see if any other acess points are nearby, and what channel they use.  You want to use one that is as far away from anybody else.
    - Non-standard features.  Your Netgear may support non-standard Wireless modes that your MAC does not undertsand.  For diagnosis and troubleshooting I usually turn all enhancements OFF.  Debug with "-g" or "-n" only.  And disable multiple channels.
Channels 6 and 11 are common defaults, so I would not be surprised if you need to switch to channel 1 or 2.

  • New Mac Book w/Lion. Can't find Pages or Keynote. Won't run with the old 09. Doesn't it come pre installed?

Old Mac Book hard drive failure. New Mac Book Pro w/Lion pre installed. Restored from back up but Pages and Kenote has error/ problem with software. I'm assuming it's out of date. Doesn't Lion come w/these programs or am I missing something?

No, Mountain Lion does not come with iWork programs. Check your account in the App Store and see if you can download them. If not you'll need to purchase them.

  • I want to install hybrid drive in Macbook pro. I bought my Mac book with lion and am now running mountain lion. I was told I needed install disk to set up new drive before restoring from my time capsule. Is this correct and if so how do I get disk osx10?

I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Sorr if this sounds redudant.. Thank you in advance

Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP.  Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear.  Select the 'restore' icon on the right.  When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility.  Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • Safari, mail and app store won't open (mac book pro, lion)

    hello,
my brother can't open safari, mail or the mac app store on his mac book pro running ios lion.
until yesterday he had no problems but today it doesn't work.
when he tries to open one of these programms they jump around at the dashboard infinitely.
his internet connection works, he can use skype and the itunes store without a problem.
what can he do to fix this?

You might want to re-post this in the MacBook Pro Discussions. PowerBooks (there's no such thing as a PowerBook Pro!) can't run OSX 10.6 or 10.7.
However while we're here, without any personal knowledge of this issue, I would suggest that if you haven't done it already the first thing to try would be to
    repair permissions.

  • AIM ichat will not sign in on Mac book pro/Lion. It always says error..?

mac book pros on lion will not sign in to ichat using a AIM. My computer was took to the genius bar and it could not be logged into ichat. everything was tried. they said it was probably a bug so can apple please fix it in the next update? thanks.

    Hi TMSlattery,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  Based on the description of the issue, it sounds like your computer isn't able to reach the Mac App Store (iTunes Store) or iCloud servers.  I would recommend the troubleshooting here:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368
    Troubleshoot issues on a Mac
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store, a software conflict or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking your access.
Update iTunes and Safari to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. Follow these steps to configure your firewall.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Learn how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you're receiving a specific error message, follow these steps.
If the issue still persists, contact your Internet service provider and confirm that these ports and servers are enabled over your network.
    Cheers,

  • Mac Book Air Lion OS version 10.7 and Adobe

Hi everyone.  I brought a Mac Book Air Notebook recently (Lion OS/version 10.7) and I am having problems to watch the youtube videos. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Marietta, YouTube also plays video in non-flash formats. You can install the Safari Click to Flash extension to play video in a native format. The benefit is you will have a longer batter run time when watching YouTube videos.
    You can get it here:
