Can my macbook pro play blu-rays?

Can my macbook pro play blu-rays without any extra equiptment purchased?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The built-in SuperDrive can read CDs and DVDs, but not Blu-Rays. You need an external Blu-Ray drive and a specific application to use Blu-Ray discs

Also note that a MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 has a native resolution of 1680x1050 (16:10) in lieu of the 1920x1080 16:9 Blu-ray output.
It would be scaled down to 1680x945 to display on the screen.

It plays DVDs, including Dual-layers DVDs but not Blu-Ray.
For that you would need an external Blu-Ray drive AND some player software.

can a macbook pro play dvds?
all it says online is that you can burn dvds, not about anything else.

Every Mac that has an optical drive can play DVD movies and read DVD data discs. I watch DVDs on my MacBook Pro too

  • Can my Macbook Pro play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

While installing Toast 8 onto my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro, the installer asked if I wanted to configure my mac to play Blu-Ray discs. I'm quite curious if my hardware is even capable...

apparently the toshiba man'fd Xbox 360 external HD-DVD drive (now 179) can work with XP/Vista with a driver
...so I would look into Parallels/Bootcamp(free, less convenient) to make that work...not too convenient though

  • New MacBook Pros and Blu-Ray?

I am considering get one of the new MBPs. Does anyone know if they play Blu-ray DVDs?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

There's no such thing as a Blu-Ray DVD.
MBPs will play DVDs, but not Blu-Ray Discs (at least not using the built in drive). That may change in the future, but Steve Jobs is on the record saying:
    {quote}
Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.
    {quote}
It's hard to say what would constitute when 'Blu-Ray takes off in the marketplace' to Jobs' satisfaction - about 1 in 10 households have a Blu-Ray player of some sort, and about 1 BD disc is sold for every 4 DVDs - but packaged media sales are declining overall (-7%/year) and digital downloads increasing (+23%/year). Jobs once indicated that he though that digital distribution would out-pace BD, and if current trends continue, Jobs will be proven quite correct.
Anyway, Apple does not provide Blu-Ray hardware of any sort for any current model of Mac, or software to provide Blu-Ray playback. Third-parties can't easily provide Blu-Ray playback because of the Blu-Ray licensing requirements (which require the operating system kernel and hardware to enforce a variety of copy-protection systems).

  • Can a Macbook Pro play DVCpro HD without dropping frames?

    Hey All,
I'm trying to output a 40min DVC Pro Hd 60, 1280x720 video to a projector for a large group. I'm using Quicktime 7.2 at full screen playing back on the second "monitor", but it seems like the video is dropping frames. The playback is stuttering and kind of strobing. This is a new 2.4ghz Macbook Pro with 2gb of Ram. The video is DVC Pro Hd from start to finish.
Is this to much to ask from a Macbook Pro? Is there another codec with comparable quality that doesn't take overly long to encode that I could use?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated,
    Steve

Forgot to mention I'm playing the video off of a 7200rpm Lacie firewire 800 drive.

  • Does my 2013 macbook pro have blu ray capability?

I am unsure if my laptop is capable of watching blu-ray discs in addition to normal DVD discs.  Anyone have an idea?

Yes, no Mac is equiped with built-in Blu-ray player. But you can install some software like Mac Blu-ray Player to achieve your purpose. Besides, you need another external Blu-ray drive which you can get from amazon.

  • Can my macbook pro play 3d videos

I have a bootcamp partition on my mid 2010 macbook pro 13". when I updated the graphics driver, the nvidia management tool displayed that it could manage my stereoscopic 3d. I wanted to know if my computer could manage 3D if I bought the glasses and IR receiver.
    Thanks,

The screen is just a screen, it displays whatever the video card says and code fed to it.
The 3D effect occurs with your eyes, as the glasses force one eyeball to move out of alignment to match the mismatched two patterns on the screen that create the 3D effect.

  • How Good Can The MacBook Pro Play Minecraft and other games like assassins creed?

    Please Answer!

You shouldn't have any problem running Minecraft; It's Java based and will run on most platforms. I'm running Minecraft without a hitch.
Assasins Creed? Hmm, depending on your hardware spec i shouldn't see you having a problem.
I'm running on the 2013 15" Retina, with dedicated graphics chip though; However the Activity Monitor shows that it is using the Iris chipset to run Minecraft.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can you play blu ray on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro and I am wondering if I can play Blu ray movies on my MacBook?

    Of course you can...
I bought this off of amazon.com... Samsung SE-506BB. Took me a while to understand the difference between AB and BB, found that BB is the latest version with a few bugs resolved.
Get Macgo from http://www.macblurayplayer.com... Download the trail version... I have been playing Blurays using this...
    enjoy
    Thanks & Regards
    Techno.
Forgot to add... Unlike OWC, Samsung doesnt need an external power supply... Good for carrying around...

  • How Play Blu-Ray on MacBook Air?

    Mavens,
Have you ever travelled with your MacBook Air...intending to view a few Netflix originated Blu-Ray discs to fend off the boredom of yet-another-bland-hotel-room...only to discover the Apple SuperDrive doesn't support Blu-Ray?
What did you do? Is there a legitimate way to view Blu-Ray discs on an Air? Are there reliable 3rd-party drives/software available?
    Your suggestions are invited.
    Thanks,
    Plane Wryter

Step 1: Connect the Blu-ray drive to the MacBook Air via the USB interface
Step 2: Get the MacBook Air Blu-ray Player
Step 3: Install and run MacBook Air Blu-ray Player software on your MacBook Air
Step 4: Play Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray ISO file, BDMV folder on MacBook Air
Insert your BD into the Blu-ray driver and MacBook Air Blu-ray Player software will load and the BD will be played automatically.
Otherwise, you can press "Open Disc" button to select BDMV folder or press "Open File" button to choose Blu-ray ISO file to play.
Finally, you can have a great Blu-ray fun on your MacBook Air.
By the way, you can change it into full-screen mode, which will bring you into a more fantastic Blu-ray media world.
