Can my NEO2-FIS2R handle a OC'D 3.2e?

i'v been doing some chatting w/a member of another forum and am pretty convinced that i want to buy his 3.2e which can do 3.925ghz stable @ 1.5v on a 280fsb
the question is, can my mobo handle it ?

Quote
well, with my current set-up
i idle around 34 and load around 45
that's w/reg thermal paste that i have lying around!
so, temp wise, i should be okay
Thats what I thought but boy was I wrong . I can use my 2.8 to cook dinner with   if I did not have all these fans running
The heat output of a Prescott is no comparision to a northwood
Unless you like to " tinker" then stay with the northwood . If I had to do it all over again I think that I would have.
My Prescott is running great overclocked right now but it did involve a lot of work . I had to mod my case , update my bios, buy new memory and change my powersupply and still every now and then it will random reboot on me
Quote
also, im considering adding a 2nd 300w generic that i have lying around, would this make any difference and would it be smart/worth the trouble, and stable/safe?
Not sure of how you would do that , what are you thinking of doing ? Maybe running the hard drives and optical drives off of one and the motherboard and CPU off of the other? Where would you mount it?

  • HELP! Can't get WINXP or WIN ME installed on Neo2-FIS2R

    Dear all,
Last weekend I've been trying too many hours to get WINXP PRO (Dutch version) installed on my new Mobo. I just can’t get it installed.
Installation from CD is starting however after loading some drivers (and offering F6 to install extra scsi/raid drivers, F2 for recovery) screen goes black and in far upper left corner blinking cursor appears.
    Nothing happens anymore.
Tried the same with WIN ME (also dutch version). This one reboots just before I’ve to enter serial number (= screen were progress indicator is moving from 0-100%)
Does anybody please advise/help. If you need more info, please ask. Your help will highly been appreciated!

  • OCing, Neo2 Fis2R, can you run something BESIDES 1:1?

well after two weeks of no questions, and computer running great! (partly thx to all of you), i have another question.. My neo2-fis2r, i was wondering if i can run ram at ratio of CPU, because in BIOS i dont see any option for it.. i can set RAM speed, and set RAM timings, but i dont see anything abotu running a ratio.. i am running at about 217 FSB now (so RAM is also running at 217, or DDR 434) and it wont go any higher.. i have tried everything, to raising voltages and set timings differently and i cant get passed the 217.. i am pretty sure it is my RAM, cause it is running at 1:1, and i doubt it can OC much higher then it is
    Infineon PC3200 512 X 2      2.5-3-3-6       2.65 V
so, question was can i run at a ratio with my board? or do i just need to go buy me some PC4000 to get my FSB up any higher... thanx and hope to hear from anyone soon...

yes, definetely, but i never did see the benchmarks for that, thank you, but really, that stuff is a matter of the low latency of PC3200 vs the clock speed of kingstons PC4000.
kingstons hyper-x runs at cas 3 (i mean.. that sucks), once they get some PC4000 with tighter timings, than it won't even be a question, 1:1 is the way to go speedwise, $$$wise is totally different... maybe run 5:4 because you don't want to spend the money on PC4000.
and we calculated that the max of ram is 217, so keeping a 5:4 ratio, you could run the FSB up to around 271, which is more than we need.  the infineon may not OC well, but it does have tight timings.

  • 865PE Neo2 -FIS2R Problems

    I purchased a brand new MSI 865PE Neo2-FISR along with a P4 2.4C(OEM), a Thermaltake Spark 5c cooler and a Corsair XMS Twinpack(TWINX512-3200C2PT) of DDR400 memory.
The install went fine, the system booted and ran very well right out of the box.  I installed the Live Update program from MSI and it updated itself.  I then used that utility to generate a BIOS flash/recovery disk to update the bios from 1.10 to 1.30.  The update worked fine and I rebooted the machine into Windows XP with no problems.
I then decided to do some tweaking in the new 1.3 BIOS.  After several unsuccessful memory/Dynamic Overclocking settings the system refused to boot.  I tried the Clear CMOS jumper to reset the defaults but it still would not boot.  I checked the D-Bracket, 3 red 1 green(lower right) which indicates that the video card is not initializing.  I attempted reseating the video card (a PNY Geforce4 TI4200) with no luck, I then replaced that card with a GeForce4 MX440 SE with no luck.  I tried four other video cards, 2 AGP and 2 PCI, with no success.
At this point I pulled the board out of the system and let it sit with the battery out of the board hoping that the BIOS would reset to default values.  I reinstalled the board with all the hardware and again the same D-Bracket error with no video generated.  I tried different arrangements of memory using the new Corsairs and various other DDR333 & DDR266 again no luck.
What is going on with this thing?  How could an errant timing change completely lock out the VGA card?  And why can I not clear the settings to allow the card to initialize?
This thing is getting RMA'd soon if I can't find an answer.
Anyone have any ideas or similiar troubles? X(

  • 865PE Neo2 FIS2R

Hello all. I've searched the forums and read alot of posts about my problem, but seem to be missing the information I am looking for. Let me tell you what is going on. I have the MSI 865PE Neo2 FIS2R mobo ver 1, P4 3.0 800FSB, 1 gig corsair twinx XMS 3200 CL2. My problem is when I try to use this RAM my system will not start. No Post, nothing and the D-bracket shows me memory error code. If I use a strip of crucial from my other PC everything works fine (the crucial is 333mhz at 512mb, cl3). I checked out the RAM compatability report on the MSI site and it was pretty confusing to me. I guess my question is, is my RAM compatible or is there a work around to using the XMS modules?
    Other components are as follows:
    ATI Radeon 9800XT (256)
    48xCD-RW
    80gig WD drive (PATA)
    431w Enermax PSU
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Dink,
great to see someone who has the same config as I have.
    My System:
    865PE NEO2 FIS2R (Bios 1.8)
    CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200C2PRO
    ATI Radeon 9800XT
My system is running very stable with Ram-Settings at 2-3-3-6-8 in Turbo/Sergeant. Pls set your timings to these values. This should work.
Now a question to you. I have problems with the ATI 9800XT cards.
    1) Do you also see stuttering or lags when running 3DMark2001SE? With ATI 9800XT Reference Cards I experience these lags also in the overlay mode and in Games when turning very fast (egoshooters). You can see what I mean when you install this little tool which changes the background of your WinXP desktop to a psychedelic wormhole: http://www.geisswerks.com/drempels/index.html
After you start this funny tool. Watch out for your desktop. If it isn't runnin 100% smooth you have the same problems as I have. The only 9800XT card which isn't causing this stuttering is the ASUS 9800XT. Could you pls. tell me if you also see these lags? You can increase the stuttering by copying some files from Dir1 to Dir2.
These lags have no impact of benchmark results!
    2) Pls could you tell me what's the IRQ of your card? 16? Is it shared with the USB Controller?
    3) Who is the manufacturer of your card? Ati itself or Hercules, HIS or Saphire??
If you cannot see this stuttering I would bet you have a ASUS.

  • 865PE NEO2 FIS2R memory problem

    I have this 865PE NEO2 FIS2R with a 3ghz northwood (512K cache, 800 fsb).
initially I bought a 1GB Geil PC3500 DDR dual channel kit. installed those into slot 1 and 3, installed windows...during install I would get blue screens. recently I bought a new PC-3700 DDR dual channel kit (industry standard generic stuff). I bought those cause the place I got it from claimed it works on the i875 NEO FIS2R. I figured if it works on the 875P, it should work on the 865PE. with the new memory I get blue screens a tad more often.
I tried both geil sticks again this time as single channel in slots 1 and 2 (Ch. A). I still got blue screens. I did the same with the new PC-3700 RAM, blue screens with that too.
I took those sticks out, and tried 1 Geil PC-3500 stick in slot 1, no blue screens.
Whats the deal here? shouldn't dual channel memory work as dual channel in a dual channel board? WHy can't I use 2 sticks of the same RAM in this board!
is it just incompatiable with geil dual channel? If so what about the PC-3700 RAM I tried as dual. I am thinking about trying a set of OCZ dual channel RAM, but I feel I already got $400 worth of RAM I can't use, I don't really want to waste another $200 if this is just a crappy board.
I'm thinking of just getting the new Asus with the SiS 655TX chipset, supposed to be faster anyway. 2 sticks of RAM would most likely work in that board.
I really don't want to spend anymore money on this though...I spent enough.
    the specs:
    P4 3ghz northwood
    865PE NEO2 FIS2R (with updated 2.3 bios)
    Chieftech 650 watt Power supply 36A, 36A, & 32A
BFG geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB (also tried an old geforce 2 mx 32MB)
memory tried: 1GB geil PC-3500 dual channel kit & 1GB generic dual channel kit
    3com Network interface card
    WD 120GB SE hard drive
    Plextor 8X DVD-RW drive
    Lite on 16X DVDROM drive

This problem is not yet solved....
I tried increasing the ram voltage to 2.8v, it ran fine for about 3 days...then boom..restart
I am seeing other people are having the same problem with these 865/875 boards.
after raising the ram voltage didn't work I tried unplugging all of my extra hard drives 1 by 1 with the memory set to 2.7v.
I am at the point where I have only my boot drive connected with the two DVD drives.
But I am still thinking its my power supply...that power supply caculator page says I need a 519 watt PS?? I have a true550 which is only 530 watt max.
If I do need to add 20% to the power calculated, I would need a 622 watt PS???
I am running speedfan now....how low is the voltages ok to drop to?
the +12 dropped to 11.19, max is 11.80
the rest of the voltages are staying more or less constant .
Oh yea, on occasion the nb fan stops, I get a warning in corecenter saying 0 RPMs.
Also I can't set the fans to high speed, 6000RPM for the nb, and 5000RPM for the CPU.
If I set corecenter to user, and move the slide up to 8, the max is only 3375RPM for the CPU and 3750RPM for the NB fan.
Also every once in awhile the power LED on my case will go out while the system is running.
But thats been doing that for awhile now!
I'm thinking I will connect up my other hard drives again and run this speed fan program again.
    update:
I reconnected my drives, ran speed fan, noticed it stops responding after 10 min...I get an error saying smbus cannot be scanned...or something like that.
Also I've got errors when downloading saying I have no ports available. it sounds like the bus is shutting down??
This is not the only MSI 865PE NEO2 FIS2R I have ran into problems with
it looks like I will be getting a new board next week....either an Asus or Abit.

  • 865PE Neo2-FIS2R, memory question!

    Hi!
I´m thinking of buying memory for the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R mother board and have a few doubts that are on my mind.
    1. If I want to use DualMode memory, should I use 256+256 or 512+512.
Lets assume that I buy 2x 256MB and uses them as DualMode.
Can I later put another 2 x 256MB into the computer and use them all as DualMode, (256+256+256+256) or is only possible to use 2 of each size.
Maybee I should buy 1x of 512MB and use it as SingeMode and later complement with another 512 and use them as DualMode.
    hmmmmm.......any point of views?
The memory I´m talking about is:
     Corsair CMX256A-3500C2 256Mb DDR PC3500 CAS2 434MHz
     Corsair CMX512-3500C2  512Mb DDR PC3500 CAS2 434MHz
I assume that they are the same as MSI has in its
"DDR400 Memory Modules Qualified Vender List " and should work just fine with the motherboard.
    Regards
    WiGGoW

I would not go with that brand of ram. There are alot of issues being talked about involving that ram in this forum. I recommend Kingston and so does MSI. Keep in mind to obtain Ultr-Turbo in Bios you need to buy a latency of 2 or you will get an error message and your bios will reset to slow.

  • Any issues with Koolance CPU-200G on 865PE NEO2 FIS2R?

I'm thinking about getting a Koolance Exos and using the CPU-200G Block on my 865PE NEO2 FIS2R board. Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with this set up.
My problem is that I just upgraded from a 3 year old Presario that was actually very quiet (what did it have to cool? heh). And now my case has 5 80 MM fans running, a CNPS7000a-AlCu, plus PSU fans, GPU fan, NB fan... fans, fans, fans!!!! And the thing is so freaking loud.
Water-cooling looks like a good solution, but I don't know if
    A) the block will fit on the board or
    B) would I just be better off removing a couple fans.
Currently, everything is quite cool, I just want to kill the noise!
Thanks for any input or testimonials.

If you don't have any small kids or pets that might get in there, I would suggest removing ALL fan grills.  Any time you make air change direction you increase noise.  Furthermore with the case of fan grills you also increase air turbulence that disturbs the flow of air lowering cooling efficiency.
Ever listen to how quiet that 80mm fan is by itself when you put it to your ear?  Why doesn't it sound like that in the case.  The answer air that passes the grills and sharp edges of the computer case and inside makes noise as it hits the edges and surfaces.  Eliminating as many of them as you can can aid in turbulence and temperature drop!
Not to mention the competition audio stuff in my thunderbird works great as insulation.  Dynamat can kill most any sound, noise or vibration!
Lastly, bigger fans that spin lower RPM's are a key to eliminating sound.  Same concept as the CNPS.  A good flowing 2500RPM Sunon 80mm fan on your videocard would be just as effective and much quieter than the stock 5000+ RPM fan!  You can reduce noise with less heat.  I REALLY like the Zalman Heatpipe VGA cooler, but without a case with KILLER airflow, overclocking your card with one can be pretty unpredictable from machine to machine.

  • NEO2-FIS2R ATI 9800 AIW Pro TV Tuner causes freezes/blue screens. Help!

I recently upgraded my system from P4 2.4Ghz to P4 3.4Ghz Northwood and went from All in Wonder Radeon to 9800 AIW Pro. Only other change worth mentioning is I created a 0+1 RAID using 4 hard drives which were previously configured differently. I watch a lot of TV while I work on the computer. I do a lot of disk writes and data management which ultimately creates a lot of transfering of data between disks. Never was a problem in the old config. BTW, I also use an external HD conntected through USB for data transfers as well.
Immediately, my system went from stable to unstable. I first noticed that the destop redraw on bootup was slower. Then I noticed that the TV had a delayed response on changing channels and changing volume. Switching to another window causes a slow redraw and sometimes causes a jerk in the TV display like a hickup. Other symptoms include blue screens but no driver is referenced. The blue screen otherwise is a normal STOP screen except for the bottom quarter of the monitor which looks like video garble. Sometimes it just reboots. Sometimes, it freezes. I noticed that doing disk transfers while watching TV usually speeds up the behavior. Comparatively, my use of the TV in the old config was transparent regarless of how much I taxed the system.
Anyway, in view of the unexpected behavior, I decided to backup and reinstall the OS from scratch using a vanilla install method. Everything was detected properly, OS installed fine. Installed ATI's latest Catalyst drivers. I turn on the TV and within about 15 minutes of use, the erratic behavior begins. I figured it was a bad card so I exchanged it out. Same thing with the new card. ATI is shrugging their shoulders and pointing at MSI.
I ran hardware tests, updated the MB BIOS to latest available. Tested all four hard drives/RAM. I can't find any hardware issues. I'm very conservative with my BIOS settings so aside from the default values, I have only changed the settings required to allow for a 0+1 RAID config on the Promise controller.
I put my old ATI Radeon back in and ran the TV for hours and had no problems at all. I also swapped my old 2.4 back in with the 9800 AIW Pro and the problem is recreated so that is what has me ruling out the processor.
Here's what the box looks like inside.
    Antec 480 True Blue
    MSI NEO2-FIS2R (w/latest BIOS)
    1GB Corsair VS512MB400 x 2
    4 Maxtor 160GB hard drives, 8MB Cache, 2ea SATA, 2ea PATA
    Intel 3.4Ghz Northwood CPU, 512KB, 800FSB w/Zalman 7700CU HS/F
ATI 9800 AIW Pro 128MB DDR
    Front/Rear 120mm Case Fans
Optical drive, floppy drive, modem card, sound card.
NOTE: All USB ports are being used by devices with their own power supply except for a web camera.  All fans are using power from PSU. No fans use MB power.
I also checked to insure that the AGP card was seated correctly and verified that it was. So, I'm pretty bummed out that I just dropped circa $500 on improving my system but I can't even get it work as well as it used to.
I think I have found the problem but short of getting rid of the 9800 AIW Pro, I am hoping that someone else has had this problem and can help me out. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Good News!!
While the DDR voltage was set to 2.7, I recreated the conditions in which the failures tended to occur. Within minutes, it was obvious that something had changed as I had never gone that far without getting kicked out, freezing up, or blue screening. Since this is looking more and more like a power issue, I decided to leave all of my external USB connections disconnected except for the external hard drive because I normally transfer data back and forth frequently from it.
When I saw that the system was holding up well, I connected the rest of the USB connections. Everything ran OK for a few minutes but then the sound from the TV dropped out while the picture continued to function. Although, this marked another failure, it was a marked improvement over what had been happening previously.
NovJoe suggested tweaking the voltage to 2.7 ~ 2.8 so I upped the voltage to 2.8 and setup the same environment and the machine has run that way for about 3 hours. That one increment seems to have made a difference.
    Questions which come to mind.
    1. If this is a power issue, is it the motherboard's inability to supply the correct voltage to the motherboard components or is it a PSU issue which isn't providing the motherboard enough juice to do its job or a combination of both?
    2. If this issue can be corrected through tweaking voltages, how do you know how far to go before damaging system components?
One of the original symptoms with the TV is still apparent. Upon changing channels, there is a second delay before the sound and picture synchronize. Changing foreground windows also causes a "hickup" in the TV's sound/video. I'm more concerned with what this behavior may mean from a system performance standpoint rather than the annoyance since this is a 9800 AIW Pro and it should be snappy instead of sluggish.
Up the AGP voltage? On that subject, the people here seem to have a lot of background with tweaking the BIOS. I'd appreciate any other ideas in tweaking this system as well.
Ultimately, I have to answer the question of whether I need to get a bigger PSU or can I safely correct my system performance by using BIOS tweaks?
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Will A MS6728-Neo2 FIS2R support a 3.4 CPU? Will I feel the difference outside of my Wallet :)

    Hey Guys, I'm thinking of upgrading. Will my MSI 6728 - 865PE Neo2 FIS2R support a 3.4 Cpu i.e.   3.4EE or 3.4 Northwood.

hmmm, i "upgraded" from a 2.8c to a 3.2(c) 800FSB. since you want 3.4GHz i dont know what the difference is there, even though i have mine oc'ed 24/7 to 3.6GHz.
well, i notice almost no difference i games. and since thats everything i do with my machine, besides some surfing the internet or some work for uni it wasnt worth the extra cash.
but it feels good to have it anyway. every benchmark gives you higher scores and overclocking has become a little easier since i dont have to crank up the FSB that much compared to my old 2.8c aka, its more stable @ higher speeds - and i can use some PC3200 memory without having to fear that it will hold me back.
so, its really up to you. when you game alot you wont find any improvements and you should save your money. but if its benchmark scores what you're after, or you want some safe overclocks in the 3.6 - 3.8GHz region, then 3.x P4s are the way to go.
another advantage even if its little is, that you can use LL memory, because you dont need PC3700 or faster stuff.

  • Ghost cd-rom with Neo2-FIS2R

Hi, I hope someone here can give me a hand... I am running Windows 2000 Pro with Service Pack 4 in the following system:
    P4 2.6c
    2 x 512Mb DDR400 CAS3
MSI NEO2-FIS2R (BIOS v1.4, default settings)
    MSI Starforce FX5600-VDT128 (Detonator v45.23)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120Gb (SATA Drive)
    TDK N440 DVD writer
When I boot windows gives the error message "Can not access the especified drive or file path" and a SCSI cd-rom appears in "My Computer" that is not physically in the system. I can run all apps. and games but this is very annoying, any suggestions?
    Thanx

i also had the virtual drive thingie, even thou it didn't make any error messages for me but it was annoying, and i hadn't installed any programs to make a virtual drive, i disabled it in the Device manager and didn't think about it again, i installed winxp for a couple of days ago so i don't really know what happend with it :)

  • Northwood 3.2G at 54 at idling on Neo2 FIS2R

I am using 865PE Neo2 FIS2R. I just put my new northwood 3.2G and it is at 54 when I am writing code and playing mp3. When I play generals or rip DVD it goes to 70 or above. Quite scary, I mean.
I am using the noiseless ZALMAN CNPS7000A-AlCu Aluminum + Copper CPU Cooler but I guess its Any suggestion, I don't have any plan to go with watercool right now though and sure less noise the better.
    Thanks a lot, guys.
on New egg, some guy claiming he use the same cooler to boost a 2.4C to 3.3G
with 47 full loaded. how can it be so bad for my 3.2C? Jesus Crist!!!!
Also, another PS, the pin holes of CPU slot seems much smaller than my via-vpsd's
I spent half an hour to gentlely push my CPU into the slot though my 2.6B went in and out fine. Thanks god it is running anyhow.

if it is a prescott and you are going to cool it with air you will probably have to mount a duct in the side cover if you want to get the temps down to a manageable range( many people have tried other ways without success) unless you go water cooling
I have told this story 100 times so for my own enjoyment I will make it 101 ( sorry to those who have read it the other 100 times )
My prescott ran the same temps as yours except I had blue screens , constant reboots etc etc . I tried the artic silver and all the other options given to me by many helpful people and the temps were still to high for my taste. I was ready to throw the thing in the trash can
I found this link on intel's web site that explains the need for a "thermally advantaged chassis"(see my signature for link) when using a Prescott
I cut the hole, mounted the duct and added an 80mm fan inside the duct just for good measure and PRESTO 42C at idle and never above 55C under an extremme load . This is using the stock HSF that came with the processor. And the topper is that these temps are measured with my system overclocked to 3.59
The mod takes about 15 min and my total cost was only $15.00. you might want to try it( I can send you directions and pictures of my case if you like)

Seems like a common theme.  :(  I'm in the same boat. I am swapping out my RAMM from 3700 to 3200LL to see if that helps. I know people are using 3700 though. We'll see in a few days when the RAMM comes in.

  • ALOT of problems w/ my NEO2-FIS2R mobo!!

Hopefully someone can help me on this board cuz I've ran out of ideas.
Just bought alot of new parts for my new system I'm building.
But, when I was done and ready to boot the system up I just keep getting these annoying bluescreens (WinXP) and every now and then I can boot into Win98 Failsafe (dualboot) and a few rare times I've been able to boot into Win98 w/out failsafe.
The few times I managed to go into Win98 it crashed after a few minutes with all kinds of different errors (like Internal Stackpile problem etc)
Also, the few times I've managed to get to Win98 it can't find my GF4 card, it says it doesn't excists... and it can't install some of the software from the install CD of the motherboard.
The hardware in my new system:
    Quote
    Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB -HT
    MSI NEO2-FIS2R motherboard
    2x  256MB PC400 DDRAM MAJOR/3RD PC3200
    MSI GeForce4 TI4800SE-VTD8X 128MB
    2x120GB 7200RPM HDD's
First someone told me that the motherboard doesn't support the MSI GeForce4 TI4800SE-VTD8X 128MB cuase it's not 1.5V compatible, but I've looked around this board and I've seen alot of configurations with the exact same gfx card so I more or less ruled that out (UNLESS, I have to jumper the gfx card somehow, if so, please explain HOW)
The 2:nd thing I'm concerned about is that my RAM isn't compatible with the board, could this be the case?
When I try to boot up WinXP I keep getting a bluescreen saying some hardware failure occured.
But the LED's on the D-Bracket says everything is working fine (4 green led's).
If anyone has any solution or advice of things I can try I'm greatful. I'm stuck and I'm out of ideas.
I tried stuff like only running 1 memory stick (tried em both alone and on different DIM slots)
I pulled our everything but the essentials, still same error(s).
Please, anyone, come with a solution, getting extreamly frustraded.
    /D

    Thanks for the fast reply.
No, did not reinstall windows, it's recycled from my old computer.
Done it like that on all systems I ever buildt and never had any problems.
The OS fails to launch in Failsafe aswell, and then I'm not using anything but the needed drivers, so that should work.
Going to try out the memtest86 asap.
THe few times I got into Win98 I tried a system diagnostictool and I actually got it to run through every test once and it didn't find any problems with the RAM, HDD's or anything.. still, 60sec after the test Windows crashed and a blacktext came up in the corener of the screen saying it had an Internal Stackpile failure and asked me to change the stack settings in config.sys.
But since I don't run WIn98 normally (just a backup OS on one of the HDD's) I don't really want/care of having it fixed, I want to get WinXP up and running.
So, no need to change any jumpers on my card then? Good (read something about that on one of the Warning papers that came with the board)
Ohhh, and when trying to load WinXP in failsafe I can see that the last thing it loads before it gives me a Bluescreen is GIVEIO.SYS, hopefully that might be of some assistance.
