Can My New Hard Drive Be Causing Back-Up Weirdness?
Last week, I bought a new Seagate 100GB/7200 rpm HD, which I've been using externally in a Firewire enclosure. I wanted to try it out for a week before I install it into my Pismo.
I've been using computers for 20 years, and I'm conscientious about saving often, and backing up everyday. Here's the weirdness: Today, Saturday Oct 6, I opened the two files I've been using every day, only to find I'd lost two day's work. I checked the Last Modified date, and sure enough, both files were marked Wednesday, Oct 3. So, I checked my internal HD to which I've also been saving my work. Same thing. Both files marked Wednesday. So I checked my memory stick. Same thing. Both files marked Wednesday.
The most likely explanation for this is no doubt user error of an all too common kind but I am, as I say, extremely careful about backing up. So today, when I'd finished, I saved both files, and closed both files. I checked them in the HD's list, and they were both marked with today's date. Fine. So I clicked and dragged the first one over to the folder in the Internatl Drive. No problem. It alerted me that there was an older version and did I want to change it. I did. That went fine. But then, with the second file (also marked Today), when I dragged it to the Internal Drive's folder I fumbled it slightly, and I got a message saying "THere is a NEWER file with that name in this location." Huh? Sure enough, the file in my target folder was marked Today, and now the source file was marked Wednesday again!
The order I've been saving things is first to the new external HD, then to the internal HD, then to the memory stick (although I only used the stick on Friday).
First question. Is it possible there is something wrong with the new HD that would cause this? I don't want to install this puppy if that's the case. In fact, I'd want to return it.
Second question. If I've saved a file but haven't closed it, and then drag its icon from the HD to another target, will I be making a copy of the latest saved version? Or only the latest CLOSED version? (I don't think I did this yesterday, but it's possible, I guess).
Third question. Even if it is human error, what error could I possibly have made that would lose TWO days work and not just one?

Thanks JPL. At least now I know I'm not going mad. The drive really did undo what I saved. I watched it happen again on the weekend (but this time I'd emailed the work to my Yahoo account before I copied it in any direction). But it's still pretty unnerving to see it happen.
What you say accords perfectly with what I've been reading on the Panther forum and elsewhere. I didn't know anything about jumper settings. I looked up Toshiba (re the old drive) and Seagate (for the new drive) on the subject. Both are remarkably confusing. Toshiba's settings are dependent on whether "Pin 28" is High or Low, but they don't explain what this means, nor which pin is 28. Seagate's illustrations do not resemble my new drive and they contradict what is shown on the label.
Unfortunately, I went ahead and put the new drive into the machine set to Cable Select. And re-did the whole SuperDuper process. But after reading the above sites, I decided it should probably be set to Master. So I opened up the Pismo again and reset it (that only took about 5 minutes). I am just now completing the SuperDuper process again.
I also checked OWC's Help Desk and you're right--they say, "All drives should be set to Master when used in a FireWire case. If it is a dual enclosure then one is set to Master and the other Slave."
So it seems all this rigmarole stems from the HD having shipped set to Cable Select, since both the Enclosure and the Pismo want it set to Master.
Clarification: do you mean I should now re-initialize the old HD which I've now put into the Firewire enclosure? I haven't changed its jumper settings. I'd like to avoid SuperDupering again, if possible, as it takes over an hour. Wouldn't I just be cloning from the clone I just made?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.Disregard last post--I reread your message and see I got it wrong. The internal drive was set to Master. So, after reading your input, and checking Seagate's site (for the new drive) and Toshiba's (for the old), and OWC's Help Desk (for the Firewire enclosure) I've set the new drive to Master and put it into the machine. I've left the old drive on Master and put it into the enclosure to be used occasionally as an external backup. These seem to be the correct settings for both locations. I've now re-initialized the new drive and I'm up and running with it. I'm expecting this will have solved the problem. If not, I'll post back. Thanks so much for your help--others in the G3 Powerbook forum also found it very helpful. All best, GB.

i just replaced the hard drive on my macbook pro, reformatted new hard drive, installed a back up from time machine and now have kernel panic ( you must restart your computer) what do I need to do?
If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. -
New Hard Drive - Lost Front Row!

I have an iMac running on Tiger 10.4.11 and this past week I had my hard drive replaced. My computer originally came with Front Row installed, but it is not on my new hard drive, and was never an icon in my applications folder, therefore it is not on my external hard drive and I cannot put it onto my new hard drive (I only backed up my documents, photos, music, and applications folders). Is there any way I can get front row back?Caitlin:

I recently had to install a new hard drive in my computer. This caused me to have to reload all content back to my iTunes and iPod. I have many apps on my iPod and i don't know how to transfer those back to my iTunes. Can anyone help?
Right clicking on your ipod in the device list an d choosing "transfer purchases" will copy apps and bought media from iTunes to your computer. Due to the new iTunes library on your new HD, iTunes will erase your ipod during the first sync. Basically it's backing up manually, transferring her purchases (apps and bought music), letting iTunes erase the ipod due to the new iTunes library, and restoring from the manual backup again, to get all the data and settings back.
Make sure your new computer account is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.

Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.

Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

Transferred backed-up data from external hard disk to new hard drive on my MacBook Pro which seemed to be successful. I now find that some (or maybe all) old emails have been resent. Can anyone tell me what has happened?

I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.
I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.

My hard drive recently crashed and I did not have a backup (I know, I know!). Anyway, new hard drive installed and some of my files were saved including some music files. However, when I try to add them to iTunes, they do not add. I have everything on my ipod but when I connect it, it says that I have already synched it with another computer. How can I get my music back in the library as it was before? Connect your iPod to your computer. when you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. -
I backed up my macbook pro before having a new hard drive installed. They installed Maverick for me, but now My Book says its not compatible and I can't restore my files and pictures from the external hard drive. What can I do?
Simple if you have a complete backup of your old drive erase the new one and restore from your Time Machine backup. That will put your Mac back to exactly like it was before you had the hard drive changed.
In all honesty I have no idea why most all the Apple stores upgrade every Mac that comes through to Mavericks.
To do the erasing and restoring you need to either boot from the original system discs that came with your Mac or if it came with either Lion or Mt Lion use the Online Internet Recovery system. To boot to that at startup hold down the Command + Option/alt + r keys and keep them held down until you see a globe on the screen. Once thje Mac OS X Utilities screen loads use Disk Utility to Repartition the drive as one partiotion to remove all data from it. Then when that is done exot disk Utility and select Restore from Time Machine Backup. Have the TM backup drive connected before you start this process. -
I know my back up exists I can see it on disk utility but migration and disc utility wont work to restore my back up on my new hard drive it shows up with the message "this disk is already in use" i am so done. someone pls help me
Otherwise software may be attempted to access the drive. The the computer up in Safe Mode by holding shift when you turn it on. Also be sure to power off and on the hard drive itself.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is. -

As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?

My computer crash and i got a new Hard Drive. I synced my Ipod to my Itunes and then lost all my photos that were on my ipod. I do not know if my cloud backed it up. Is there any way i can get my pictures back??????
- If the photos were synced to the iPod they are gone
- If they were taken by or saved to the iPod gp to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and look at the date/time of the iPod backup. If it is when you synced then restoring from backup should get the photos back.
- If you had turned on Settings>iCloud>PhotoStream, then set up PhotoStream on the computer and get the last 30 days of photos from PhotoStream. You should also be able to get them back by simply turning one Photostream on the restored iPod. -
