Can my Qosmio G40 upscale standard DVDs

Hello,
all I was just woundering if my qosmio G40-10s can upscale standard DVDs because my PS3 can and they look awsome,
I hope it does now that hd-dvd is over I have tried opening them with the hd-dvd player but it wont have any of it any help would be super
thx

How do you mean upscale? On the external screen?
Usually this depends on the player you use, so if the standard player wont do then you can try e.g. the VLC player (www.videolan.org) or the "Media Player Classic" which is included in the "K-lite" codec pack (just google for "K-lite")
Otherwise I would appreciate to hear some feedback from you regarding that issue.
Greetings

  • Qosmio G40-108 Recovery DVD needed

Hi. I have a Qosmio G40-108. Unfortunately my recovery DVD was damaged and i am now in need of it to restore my machine. I ordered one from Toshiba 5 weeks ago and they still can't tell me when i am going to receive one.
If there is anybody who could kindly do me a copy of this i will be grateful. I will gladly pay for it.
    Regards
    martin

    Hi
This forum is not an exchange market!
I presume at the moment the G40 recovery CD is not available and the authorized service provider has ordered the Recovery CD from the Toshiba head warehouse.
This takes a little bit longer.
But if you want you can install the OS from the original Microsoft Windows CD and all necessary Toshiba drivers you will find on the Toshiba European driver page!!!

  • Using Qosmio G40 as HD-DVD player via HDMI to TV - possible?

Is it possible to use G40 as HD-DVD player connecting it via HDMI interface to TV (Loewe Individual)?
Have tried, however starting HD-DVD player, error message stating, can't use the interface.

Yes, this is possible. I am using my G40 that way for several month now on my Pioneer plasma screen.
When I want to play a DVD I do the following:
    1. Connect the laptop to the TV with a HDMI cable
    2. Turn the laptop and the TV on
    3. On your TV choose the right input-source
    3. On the laptop change the audio output tot HDMI
    4. If your TV doesn't have dolby-, dts- or wma-decoders on board, then turn dolby, dts and wma on the laptop off at the HDMI-settings (or else you will hear only a ticking sound)
    5. On the laptop press Fn+F5. Best you choose the video-output to only the TV. You should now see your laptop-screen on the TV-screen
    6. Start Windows Media Center on your laptop (I don't use the stand alone Toshiba HD DVD player because sometimes it gives me problems). You should hear the starting sound of Windows Media Center on your TV
    7. Load the DVD in the your laptops DVD-drive
    8. On Windows Media center choose play a DVD
    9. Enjoy the movie on your TV screen
    10. You can use your Windows Media Center Remote control to operate the DVD at the laptop. On my configuration I can also use the volume-controle of the Remote control to change the sound-level of the HDMI-oputput
Later on - if you are ready with looking at the movie - don't forget to change the audio-output from HDMI to speakers or you will hear no sound on your laptop.
    Success!

  • AVCHD files can be output to make standard DVD?

Basic question.  My HD camera uses AVCHD files.  I presume CS5 can take these to output them as a standard DVD, rather than Blu-Ray?

  • Qosmio G40 with HD-DVD writer as compared to BlueRay

    This is my 1st post.
I just got my G40-127, and I am wondering. Didn't the internatiolnal community kick HD-DVD to the curb, and go for Blue-Ray?
Is thee any way to get a Blue-Ray wrighter to my machine or has I misunderstood this machines HD-DVD concept.
    Please set me straight. Any1.

Maybe you should take a look into this thread:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=34643
There is very interesting and useful posting created by Jeffrey.
Fact is that the CD/DVD drive in your G40 doesnt support only the HD DVD but also other formats. The HD-DVD capability is only a one part of this drive.
It is fully backward compatible and supports the DVD-RW SuperMulti (DL) standard too.
Furthermore there are more than 800 movie titles available for the HD DVD format which can be played in G40.
Anyway I didnt find any infos about availability of Blueray drives in other Toshiba notebooks. Who knows what will happen in the future

  • Upscale standard-DVD to 720-HD Timeline = Bad Scratchy Audio

My client has new HD footage for me to add to his old Directors Demo Reel on DVD.  I was able to import the DVD and open a timeline to match its properties. The problem is now his New Footage which i downloaded is HD-720p. As per his request, I'm trying to stay on the New 720p Timeline and add the old footage from the DVD (which apparently includes 48htz Uncompressed audio). I resized the video to fit, which works okay, but the original audio plays like it's scratchy and all digital garbled sound.
I've tried re-fusing his original to many different formats in search of a way to correct the audio problem, but everytime I do it sounds terrible.  Is there a way to do this correctly?  Thanks for any answers.

I have been having problems with getting my audio on only 3 sequences that are nested in one larger sequence with many others.  10 sepeeate sequences for a live band DVD.  The weird thing is that these three songs are not back to back and one of the songs in between is perfectly fine and one after is fine too.  So i learned that clearing my cache may help...tried that...and then also learned that I should export to MPEG-2 DVD first also as it isnt good to have Encore do too much.  1h:15m long total run time.  I did the export last night and woke up to an error code 6 from nVidea and the exporting stopped.  I know this has got away form the original post subject but this whole scenerio of me trying to finish this project is related.  I am getting extremely frustrated with trying to finish this project.  Many hours of editing only to be stopped by software hangups.  I know there are things that can make software not run smooth but i am just trying to weed those things out.  So i dont know if clearing the cache worked as far as getting the audio right and if exporting to MPEG-2 DVD first will help either.  Maybe splitting the sequence and exporting the two seperately into the MPEG's and putting them together on the timeline in Encore.
    SPECS:
    Windows 7 64 bit
    16 Gb RAM
    nVidea GTX 580
    i7 quad 860
Should be plenty of horsepower in here to do this job.

  • How do I extract an iPhoto slideshow on my MAC so it can be run on standard DVD player?

How do I extract an iphoto slideshow on my MAC so it can be run on a standard DVD player?

A direct way with the correct movie size would be to use the Share ➙ iDVD menu in iPhoto.  That creates the movie file of the slideshow and automatically opens iDVD and adds the movie to the menu.
I suggest you use this workflow in iDVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How many Minutes of HD from a Standard DVD?

I was wondering how many HD minutes +/- a few can I get from a standard DVD if I buy Roxio Toast 10 Titanium w/HD plugin? Will the program tell me if I exceed the time amount? I want to squeeze in as much as I can.
And I'm currently running 10.4.11 on a Power PC, so is Roxio 9 w/HD plugin as good as 10 for burning HD on standard DVD? Or should I move up to OS x10.5 and get Roxio Toast 10. Is is worth the upgrade? I'll probably only use the HD part with a standard DVD at first, then get an external Blu-Ray unit.
    Thanks,
    Rod

Toast will tell you. The 20 minute estimate was based on 'normal' content with movement. Note that if you are taking pictures of a black cat in a coal bin, you can probably fit a lot more on a disc.
If you want HD quality, it makes absolutely no sense to drop the bit-rate to low values to fit more content on a disc. You might just as well create an anamorphically squeezed widescreen SD DVD; that will give you about 2 hours on a DVD.

  • Qosmio G40-108 - dvd/video playback quality

Just bought the Qosmio G40-108 loaded with Vista Ultimate. Ead all the reports and went for the stunning display report. I am sorely disappointed with the quality of playback on DVD and avi (divX Xvid h264). The colors are wishy washy and not all that sharp.
Compared to my 3 year old Toshiba mid range machine running WXP it is pretty poor. I have not messed about with anything.
Am I missing something or is this the fault of Vista. I tried loading WXP but couldn't as it came up with the message "blocked" since WXP is a downgrade. Can anyone help?!! Please.

    I presume you are speaking about this other thread;
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums//thread.jspa?threadID=29745&messageID=107523#107523
Well, according to the second thread which you have posted the same video quality appears on another computer. So I dont think that your notebooks would malfunction.
    Regarding your XP installation;
The XP installation cannot be finished because you need to install firstly the Intel Matrix Storage Manger which can be downloaded from the Intel page or from the Toshiba page.

The dvds that I can make will play from a disk image and they can play perfectly fine in a computer but not in a standard dvd player.  I am using an external dvd burner, (The same one  have always used) to create the dvds.  I am using iDVD to author them.

    • Material used: Video-Codec and Photo file format and Audio file format - matters too. I use
    - Video - StreamingDV .dv or AIC
    - Photos as .jpg (only)
    - Audio as .aiff 16bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz (ONLY - never .mp3 or directly from iTunes - all converted to .aiff first)
With this I do not mean any setting in iDVD - BUT the raw material used in iMovie / FinalCut / Avid 100 / Adobe Premiere
As this usually matters - later in iDVD
How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
    • iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
    • iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
    • iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
    • FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
    • Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
    • Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

After the lengthy installation process I get a huge error message on Photoshop which I am pasting below. How can I finally install Photoshop? All my other programs are working. Help is much appreciated. Many thanks.

  • Workflow for creating one project that can be burned to both Blu-ray and standard DVD?

    Hi,
I have a 20 minute project and I'm creating a simple single menu with a play button. I'd like to create it once and be able to burn both a 1080p Blu-ray and a standard DVD. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Let me explain how transcoding works for DVD and Blueray.
Encore transcodes the files separately for DVD and Blueray and once the transcode is done and status shows transcoded the options for transcoding are greyed out, this means you have already transcoded the file and you cannot transcode again without reverting to original.
For example you have blueray selected in project settings and you click transcode now from project panel the files will be transcoded for blueray, but after transcoding if for any reason you decide to change the transcode settings and transcode the asset again with different settings you have to revert to original.
But in this case when you want to transcode the assets for DVD you don’t need to revert to original and loose the transcoding done for blueray. You can change the project settings from blueray to DVD after that you will be able to transcode for DVD without losing the transcoded files for blueray.

  • Can you burn Blu-Ray on a standard DVD?

I know Encore won't build a Blu-Ray movie to a DVD disc but I've seen some ppl say you can use the freeware program ImageBurn to burn the Encore build to a standard DVD as long as its small enough to fit.
The reason why I want to do it is make short HD demos of my video work on a standard DVD that can be viewed on a Blu-Ray player. DVD media is a lot cheaper than BR 50 cents vs $10 a disc and I aslo don't own blu-ray burner. For longer videos I can use a Dual Layer DVD for clients who want a HD option.
Some ppl say absolutely no, while other say yes. Someone outlined how to do it but it didn't work for me, although I only used the last part of the instructions to burn because I was using Encore to build folder or iso, while the instructions are intended for ppl ripping a retail Blu-Ray.
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/646621
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho0qbGy_4P0
I'm filmed my own legit HD content, encoding it as the proper mpeg-2 blu-ray format, authored it in Encore CS3, built a blu-ray folder or iso, and using ImageBurn to wrote it to a standard DVD. All of that worked but when I took it to Best Buy their Blu-Ray player wouldn't recognize the DVD.

For what it's worth, I've been able to burn an ENcore BluRay .iso and then used Imgburn to burn the .iso to a regular DVD and it played on a SONY BDP S300.
Sometimes the firmware in the player has to be updated.

This has been duplicated by others (see message #11 of this thread.

I wasn't able to burn a "folder" to a regular DVD, but only the .iso.
Also this thread where apparently the .iso can be burn to a dual layered DVD.

  • Can I used the 'Random' shuffle button on CS6 with a standard DVD (blu-ray/web?)

    Hi guys,
I'm just wondering if I can use the random shuffle button support on CS6 with a standard DVD?
    Thanks,
    Praga

No... not on a DVD that you play in a player attached to a TV... from the user guide PDF
Chapter PlayList support for Blu-ray and web DVDs
Encore CS6 includes new options that provide more flexibility when you play chapter playlists:
    Sequential: Play chapter playlists sequentially.
Random: Let the player randomly select a set of chapters to play.
Shuffle: Let the player play all the chapters in any random order.
Encore CS6 provides only the Sequential option for chapter playlists of DVD projects. Find these options in the Chapter PlayList panel. In addition,
Encore CS6 supports Random and Shuffle options for chapter playlists in web DVDs.
