Can new 2nd gen nano use iTunes ver. 6 instead of iTunes v7?

Just got my new Nano but I am reluctant to install a new version of iTunes given some of the problems some users have encountered, particularly as the previous version works fine with my 1st gen Nano.

Apparently iTunes7 is a requirement. I just got the 8GB nano, and iTunes6 is saying that it won't recognize the nano unless I upgrade to v7.
What's horrible is that I just went through all this work to downgrade from 7 to 6, because 7 was continuously crashing on me, over and over.
What ****.

  • New 2nd Gen Nano has to restart after synch

After I sync with Itunes (I listen to 5 or 6 different podcasts) I have to restart/reboot the NANO as it locks up the first time I use it after syncronization. It is fine after that until I re-sync again. Thoughts or suggestions please!

I have a 2nd gen nano that has been working perfectly until a month ago. When not connected to the computer the screen lights up but there is nothing on it but some faint lines. when a press the control disk it moves to another screen and i can eventually play whatever it accidentally lands on. When I plug into the computer I can see the info on the screens. any suggestions

  • Old podcasts not being removed from 2nd gen nano since iTunes 7.2

I have been very annoyed lately that, since the iTunes 7.2 update, my nano keeps all old podcasts. I much prefer to not have the ones I have finished listening to continuing to update to my ipod. I do not want to delete all old podcasts from iTunes and am getting tired of having to manually delete the ones I have heard. Sometimes I have heard only half of one, and I don't like having to keep track of which is which. I have "synch all unplayed" selected under "ipod" on the syncing page in itunes. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions? I already tried reseting (the thing does this on its own all the time anyway), and I reinstalled the software as well.

Hello FrayedSo, Sorry to read your having a difficult time with your shuffle and podcasts.
As you mentioned earlier this is your second shuffle and it is able to play songs you purchase or put onto it but it skips past the Podcasts.
Are you playing these podcasts as part of a Playlist? or is this happening in shuffle mode?
Some of the things you could do to possibly assist with troubleshooting your issue are below.
Make sure to Consolidate your iTunes Library so all your information is backed up to your iTunes Music folder. You can do this by going to Advanced-Consolidate Library.
To quote a part in Knowledge Base 30058
"Playing Audiobooks and podcasts on iPod shuffle
When iPod shuffle is set to shuffle songs it will play all the audio files on iPod shuffle that are not audiobooks. Podcasts of type .m4b or AAC will not play on iPod shuffle when it is in shuffle mode, which is the intended behavior, although a podcast of type .mp3 or .wav may play while in shuffle mode. To play an audiobook or podcast that is on iPod shuffle, set the switch on iPod shuffle to play in order."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300558
Another thing you could try. Create a new user account on your Windows System and download some podcasts and sync it to your shuffle and see if the same issue occurs.

  • New 7th gen nano with Windows 8

I purchased a new 7th gen nano and iTunes will not recognize it.  I have followed all the steps in support but it still won't work.  Any ideas of what else to try?

Hi there  - I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me) - Windows 8.1 user, 7th generation nano. You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
    Then you restart your computer.
Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled).
Then you restart your computer again.
Mine is working perfectly again now.
I hope it works for you,
    Carmen.

  • I can't get my new 7th gen nano to sync to my exsisting itunes. It keeps saying the ipod is not detected.

I can't get my new 7th gen nano to sync to my exsisting itunes. It keeps saying the ipod is not detected.

If youre like me, I have so many Apple devices, I always move things over manually rather than remember what to sync and what not to sync........ There’s an option to UNCHECK sync on any device if that helps you in ITUNES.
On any device, like your phone, in ITUNES you can check the option for manual vs. automatically sync.

  • 2nd gen nano not recognized by MBA / Lion 10.7.4 / iTunes 10.6.3

I have this 2nd gen nano (and a bunch of other ones) set to manage music manually. This particular device has worked fine while connected to MBP mid 2010 running SL and most recent iTunes.
But, this 2nd gen nano does not show up on the MacBook Air, mid-2011, running Lion 10.7.4, iTunes 10.6.3.
I have reset the nano. It plays fine, responds to setting changes properly and it does charge while plugged into either USB port of the MBA.  The computer is plugged into wall juice, and the other USB port is not in use while I try to get the nano recognized.
Disk utility does not see it either.
This MBA is not the computer I usually sync this 2nd gen nano to since that machine (the MBP mid 2010) is out for repair.
i expected iTunes on this MBA  to just mount the thing (since the iPod has the manual preference set, and is a Mac-formatted nano) and that it would then let me delete a few picks and drag a few newer tunes onto it.
The MBA, the nano and my out-for-repair MBP all have the same Apple ID associated with purchased music on the devices.
I rarely reload this nano and haven't actually changed its music since I put the MBP to Lion, so I am not sure if it's Lion, iTunes or the MBA that is the issue with this 2nd gen nano.
After the 2nd nano would not mount, I tried two other iPods, one is a 3rd gen nano and the other is a Classic.   Both of them connected fine and let me drag stuff onto them.
So it seems that either Lion 10.7.4 or iTunes 10.6.3 does not feel like recognizing the 2nd gen nano.  Hope this can be fixed.  That model nano is practically indestructible and there are still lots of them out there!

    Update on the above:
I did some more research on this using assorted of my 2nd gen nanos and a couple 1st gen ones as well.
It's only the 2GB 2nd gen nanos  MA477LL part number, that do not work with Lion / 10.7.4 / iTunes 10.6.3.
2nd gen MA477LL  does not work, it's a 2GB model. I have two of these.  Neither works.
    2nd gen MA428LL  works  it is a 4GB model
    2nd gen MA426LL  works  it is a 4GB model
    1st gen MA352LL  works - it's a 1st gen nano refurb (1GB)
1st gen MA350LL  (1GB) - this is another 1st gen nano refurb, but one that's formatted for Windows (and had nothing on it when I connected it).  For some reason it mounted fine in Mac iTunes environment and even let me drag an AAC track onto it.  I was dumbfounded.   On the desktop, its sys info showed info like any FAT32 flashdrive but it did have an iPod nano icon on it.   I ejected it from iTunes and plugged in a pair of earbuds and hit play on the track. It plays fine.   Go figure!  I rechecked the settings in the device.  It does say Windows for the format. I feel like I'm in the Bermuda triangle.  I might have to reformat it next time a Windows iTunes setup sees that nano though.
So bottom line here with the second gen nanos:    it's the 2GB model, the 2nd gen nanos with model MA477LL that do not work in Lion and iTunes 10.6.3 for whatever reason.   Both of my devices with that model number do work fine on an older MBA running Snow Leopard and iTunes 10.4.

  • I can't syn my 2nd gen nano work with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2)

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP Media Centre Edition (SP2) and a 2nd gen Nano. I have the latest version of itunes but when I plug in the Nano it won't sync.
The Nano is nowhere to be seen in itunes and shows in My Computer with an exclamation mark over it. The only thing it will do is charge.
The Nano syncs on my sisters computer which has Windows XP (SP1) and other devices work on the USB ports on my computer.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong or what I can do.
I've had the Nano for nearly four months now and it's driving me mad!!!

    Problem solved:
I used driver guide to download usbstor.sys and usbstor.inf then placed these files in my i386 folder. Then when I restarted my PC and connected my iPod I selected the i386 folder as the location to search for drivers. After that it recognised my iPod as a storage device and installed it.

  • 2nd gen nano compatible with OS X 10.2.8 and iTunes 6?

I'm still using as my music hub an ancient but reliable iMac G3 running OS X 10.2.8, and the latest iTunes version supported on it is 6.0.5, and was wondering if the 2nd gen nano is still compatible with that? Has anyone been able to try?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This is Apple's way of saying upgrade
The iPod may work, but I doubt it. Some iPods have worked with previous iTunes versions, but there were syncing problems (sometimes).
iTunes 7 changes a lot of things, so I don't know if the new iPod nano firmware will "understand" how to communicate with iTunes 6 or if it was taught not to.
Just my observations--but not really an answer. I would say no, but we can't be sure until someone tries!

  • 2nd gen nano not recognized by XP or iTunes

    Situation:
2nd gen nano with Nike+ will not appear in Device Manager nor charge. In essence, the XP pro computer does not see the nano at all. However, Nike+ still works, the nano still works in an iHome clock radio and it will beep when connected to a dock.
    Troubleshooting:
    * 5Rs attempted - however, since the PC Device Manager will not see the nano, I can't issue any restore commands.
    * even with nano in disk mode, PC does not see it
    * older first gen nano still works properly with same iTunes environment.
Has the USB on the newer nano gone bye-bye?

  • 5th Gen iPod and 2nd gen Nano will connect to Mac, not found by iTunes

I bought a brand new MacBook running OSX 10.4.9, and I cannot get my 5th gen iPod video nor my 2nd gen Nano to be recognized by iTunes. The computer recognizes that there are two drives-- they come up on the desktop. But iTunes will not notice them, let alone play music from them. These iPods are mostly used with Windows 2000 PC laptops, and I'm connecting them via USB.
    What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • Itunes says "syncing" but ipod does not.  2nd gen nano

My wife has a 2nd gen nano that will not sync. Itunes says "syncing" but ipod does not, you can scroll through the menus and use it like it was not connected. When I first connect it, the do not disconnect sign appears then after a few seconds the main menu. She has used it for 2 years and it worked fine until today.

Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?

  • If I download current itunes will my 2nd gen nano still work

I just want to make sure my reliable 2nd gen nano will work if I get itunes completly updated to 10.5.

Read iTunes 10.5 system requirements.  See if it mentions anything about the 2nd generation iPod Nano.
