ypw is correct. The very first time you play a DVD video, your region should automatically be set to the region of the DVD you're playing. If you're not an admin user, you will be asked to set the region and put in an admin password. After that, you can change the region five times.
If you want to play a DVD from another region, you may be able to use the VLC Media Player to bypass the region setting. I don't think there's a problem with suggesting that here, it's been done many times in the past. However, as the VLC Media Player is still in development and beta, some versions will play other region DVDs and some won't. Recently, it's been more unlikely that you'll be able to play a DVD from another region with the current version.
I've seen suggestions for bypassing region control by using VLC getting deleted by mods. Region control is considered a form of digital rights management, albeit a fairly simple one.
In any case, I've heard that VLC doesn't override region controls with the latest Matshita drives or pretty much any new drive. The drive itself will check the content and refuse to play region coded discs outside the currently set region. I understand that the older Pioneer and Matshita drives didn't actually have any region coding in the drive itself, and in that case Apple's DVD Player region coding was done in OSX.

  • Playing Region 2 DVDs Through External DVD Drive?

I have a brand-new MacBook Pro and I would love to be able to play Region 2 DVDs. Does anyone know if this is possible with an external DVD drive (i.e. setting an external DVD drive to play Region 2 while keeping the internal set to Region 1)?

I do have similar problem, and I undestand that in PCs there is an optional Zone 0 option that let you watch different zone movies, but sims that Apple do not disclose this to users, even this is obsolete, fore some one like a traveler that is unfair since I want to watch DVD when I rent it in other locations.
We should search for how to config the Internal DVD drive to Zone 0!.

  • Loading CS5 Master Collection onto new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive

I have a complete, legitimate, registered version of CS5 Master Collection. I also have a new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive. I have lost the disk, but have the box and confirmation email when I registered the product, with the key code. This product cost alot of money and I really need to get it onto my new machine. Can I do this without having the additional cost of a new DVD drive? I already paid for and own the software with keys so it's not like I'm trying to bend anything or do it for free. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Download the CS5 Master Collection trial version from
    http://prodesigntools.com/all-adobe-cs5-direct-download-links.html
You must follow the Very Important Instructions on that page first otherwise the links will not work.
Launch the trial and enter your serial number to license it.

  • I can not change the region of DVD for region 4 (Brazil)

I can not change the region of DVD for region 4 (Brazil) what do I do? Help me. The drive is a MAT**bleep**A BD-CMB UJ141ES notebook and is a satellite Toshiba M645.

You might try AnyDVD. It's not a free solution, but might provide you a way around the region restricions.
There are other software solutions, you might start by reading or searching at the doom9.org forums.

  • Cannot play region 2 DVD

Hi all. Very new to the Mac world. So far I love it:)
The migration from a PC was painfull but I need help with this topic.
I have quite a few DVD's from Greece. I can watch them at my Home ent. system since I was able to unlock my DVD player and at my Windows box I had a couple of programs that could override the restriction (DVD region free, dvd genie etc).
Now my Mac will not play these movies (I get the usual message that I have 4 changes allowed which is standard on every computer dvd drive)
Is there a workaround on this problem?
Is there software for the mac that will do the same thing?
If everything fails I guess I could buy a super drive from Europe and install it.
Anyway your help will be greatly appreciated.

You might try VLC player, but newer drives are tougher on any platform.

Maybe you could by a cheap external and set the region on it?

  • Playing Region 2 DVDs....Will It Mess Up?

I recently learned that DVDs have to be in your own region to play it. Well, I'm in region 1 and there's a DVD I want to get that's in region code 2. If I buy the region 2 DVD, is there absolutely no way it would be able to play on my Macbook?

    Download VLC it`s a region free .

  • New MacBooks come with Internal DVD?

Do the new MacBook pros come with an internal DVD/CD drive?

Yep.  The external super drive is an "option" when you build your own MB Pro.  Same with the iMacs, Mac Mini and new Mac Pro.  Good bye internal super drive.
As for saving projects, I guess you save them to your hard drive or an external hard drive.  These machines have thunderbolt and usb3 so external storage is very fast for read/write.  If you have an apple TV, you can upload your movie through iTunes or simply watch from your shared computer's harddrive.  I imagine there are other ways.

  • I wish to play region 1 dvds on my mac and stream them to a UK apple TV

i wish to be able to stream a region 1 dvd(which plays on my mac fine) to my apple tv. when i try dvd player reprts a system error and will only play audio. I assume that this is because of the tv differences but why. I do know about region coding

No, it's because the Apple DVD player blocks the video portion of AirPlay, you'll need to use 3rd party software to play your DVDs such as VLC.

  • Why can't I play self burned DVD-R disks?

i cannot play self burned DVD+R disks in my Mac PC. Can i load something to play it with?
Thanks, because all my VHS early childrens self made movies  are on this media.

Were your DVDs burned/converted into VIDEO_TS DVDs?
It could also be that you ptical drive has trouble with the DVD+R discs. Some hardware has trouble with the +R discs. I personally have had some trouble with the +R discs in the past. Since I've permanently switched to DVD-R, all problems have disappeared.

  • Can Mac Mini play Blue Ray DVD's

Hi am looking to purchase a new TV and set up a Mac Mini with it but would like to know if it will support a Blue Ray DVD. I don't have either yet but will shortly. I just don't want to buy a Blue Ray player if it's not necessary.
Does anyone know the answer to this?

There is also no Mac OS X software at this time that can play a Blu-Ray disk. The only way anyone has gotten Blu-Ray disks to play on a Mac is to use an external Blu-Ray disk drive and boot their Mac under Windows, for which at least one Blu-Ray player application exists.
    Regards.

  • Do any of the new MacBook Pros include a DVD drive?

I am trying to select a MacBook PRO and am wondering if any onf the new models include a DVD drive.

Only the lone 13" non-Retina machine offers an optical drive.
Otherwise, you have to purchase an external drive if you purchase a Retina model.

  • Can new Zen play mpeg

It is my understanding that the new zen players play mpeg-4 video files. Nearly all of the video files on Zencast have the extension .mp4 or .m4v. Are these mpeg-4 files? Shouldn't the Zen be able to play these nati'vely without conversion?

The MPEG-4 technology is very complicated as there are quite a number of variant around.
The .mp4 files are encoded using H.264 Compliant Video Algorithm and AAC Compliant Audio Algorithm. This is what Apple is using and such is not supported by Creative Zen.
However, the Creative Zen supports the .AVI files which uses DivX MPEG-4 and xVid MPEG-4 Codec for video and MP3 Codec for Audio.

  • Will the new MacBook have hardware-accelerated DVD/HDTV and graphics?

not clear from the descriptions I've seen, but was a big limitation in OS X and was hoping this might change with the Intel introduction. Would be a big help for DVD Player and EyeTV HDTV playback, etc.

Answered in the MacBook discussion (which was formed after I posted the question)

  • Can new MacBooks connect to current iMacs in Target Display mode?

If so, does it depend on whether the iMac has a Retina display?

Click here and check the requirements. The source computer only needs to have a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port to be compatible.
