Can no longer copy files between internal drives or from burned DVD's

This just started today as far as I can tell. We have 4 dual 2.7GHz G5's running 10.4.4. Two of them seem to work as normal. The other two won't let me drag/copy files from one of the internal drives to the desktop or the other internal.
We have two internal drives, the one with OSX on it that works fine as in I can copy/drag files to the other internal drive (labeled "AV") or to the desktop. The AV drive won't let me copy/drag any files to the desktop or the other internal, I get the circle with a line through it. Also when I burn a DVD I can't copy/drag the files anywhere on any drive. If I put a previously burned disk (burned prior to today) in I can copy it fine to any drive.
I have verified/repaired all disks, repaired permissions, and checked read&write permissions.
Any help?

OK, I figured it out (I'll admit to being a Mac n00b). I was using DVD+R's. So the act of trying to copy files from a DVD+R (even though it was burned in the same G5) changes something in the drives so nothing on them will copy.
Ejecting the DVD+R and restarting without the disk in it got it back to normal. The problem was reproduced when I tried the DVD+R again (just to confirm the issue and solution). Again a restart fixed it.
Moral of the story, don't use DVD+R in Macs even though they can burn to them.
Anyway, if anything hope this post can help other n00bies.

  • I can no longer copy files manually to our external drive?

Hi - I'm not sure what happened here, and I'm hoping someone can help. Basically, we are starting to film library programs for local TV. A colleague at the high school with a lot of experience was kind enough to buy us a mybook external drive (one terabyte!) to store our video and audio files. We use an iMac and two eMacs for the teen digital film club and have also just been given a white macbook specifically for production. So -
We (my teen assistant and I) had been able to move files over to the drive manually before. But, on getting the macbook, I got some raw film footage onto it, edited it, and then wanted to get that film onto the mybook in order to make room for a second hour of film to be edited on the macbook. But -
As I tried to show my colleague how to connect the external drive to the macbook, some message came up very quickly - did I want to use the mybook to back up the macbook using Time Machine? I tried to click "no" - there was a scary warning about losing all the info on the drive, and I did not want that to happen! I just wanted to be able to move stuff between the computers and the drive, as we have been doing. I don't know what I did wrong, but, after connecting the drive to the macbook, there is an empty file on the external drive which has the same name as the new macbook, and we can no longer copy anything manually. How can I correct this?

Just to let everyone know: my problem is solved - after a fashion.
When I contacted customer support, I got told the formatting of the drive was not a problem; they sent them out this way so they would be universally compatible. But, since we were sharing the drive between macs, the tech support person thought it would be a good idea to reformat it. He also explained that the original formatting didn't allow transfers of more than 4 gigs - a problem for us, since we are regularly working with larger files.
So he told us how to reformat using disc utility in Leopard. And then we discovered our second problem. The disc could not be reformatted. Nor could it be verified or repaired. It is too damaged to use.
We now have a case number and therefore should be able to replace the hard drive. So that's what happened.

  • Back To My Mac: why can't I copy files between Macs?

I use Back To My Mac to connect between a Mac Book Pro and Mac Pro. These two machines have the same home directory name, but different passwords. My home network is on an Apple Airport Extreme.
A recent, persistent bug is causing havoc when I try to copy files between computers. Here is what happens:
    1. I connect to the Mac Pro remotely from the MBP, using my Apple ID credentials.
    2. Using a finder window on my Mac Book Pro, I try to copy a file TO the Mac Pro desktop that I'm certain doesn't already exist there. A "Preparing to copy" window appears.
    3. After a few moments, a window appears: "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this." Again, I've already entered my Apple ID to connect to the Mac Pro. This window requires my Mac Book Pro sign-in in order to continue.
    4. The next message is 'A newer item named “FileName.pdf” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving?'
Here are the results of my options from this dialog:
    >>If I choose 'Keep Both Files':
-- A progress window appears (saying something like "copying 0 of 108 kb", but without any progress bar movement). I click the X button to stop the transfer, the progress window changes to "stopping" status, but remains on the screen for several minutes. My Mac Pro is unresponsive/unreachable via BTMM during this time.
-- After several minutes, the file transfer progress window disappears and my Mac Pro becomes available again via BTMM. There are now several THOUSAND numbered copies of the original. Each is 0 kb in size.
    >>If I choose 'Replace':
-- A progress window appears, quickly followed by this message: 'The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “” already exists.' The message appears exactly as written, without the filename between the quotes.
-- A file with the same name as the one I tried to copy over is now on the Mac Pro desktop, but it is 0 kb in size.
I'm lost -- not sure if this is a permissions issue, a problem w/ BTMM, or something else. Any input, advice, questions, etc. are very welcome.
    Thanks

I'm having the exact same issue, did you find a solution. It's annoying!

  • Why can't iMac copy files to external drive?

  • Leopard / Bootcamp / Vista / Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows

On the apple page it says I can copy files from mac to windows?
"Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows
Copy, open, modify, or delete files in Mac OS X that you saved to your Windows partition. Leopard understands the Windows FAT32 disk format."
I tried installing Vista in bootcamp, but it says I cannot install in FAT32? So i format it to NTFS.
So here's my question, Can i still copy files between mac and pc, if I format into NTFS or am using vista?
    Thanks

I am quite a simple soul really and very easily pleased.
All I seek is a partition of some sort that I can save all my created work to - whether in XP Pro or OS X 10.5. But it has to be a large partition - probably a single partition on a large drive.
It would be sweeter still for Spotlight to do what it does (and it does on a FAT partition) and sweeter still for Time Machine to be very user friendly and do what it presently does not do and include created files into the TM.
Now that really would be very pleasant. Very pleasant indeed.

  • Can no longer move or copy files between drives (not a newbie issue!)

Copying and moving files between internal and external devices, and external to external devices is no longer working.
*For the first time in my life, I get a "Circle with a Bar through it" when attempting to move or copy files.*
This doesn't happen between the two internal drives at all (though I'm worried it might start). It happens between two HFS+J devices as well as HFS+J and FAT32 devices. I can delete files, create folders, and in some instances where things are acting funny, copy to, but not from the device. A noticed side effect that is now happening is that I can no longer move drive icons (CDs, DVDs, HDs) to their upper-right hand corner position on the desktop, if they didn't start there. They don't drop there, just staying where they originally sat (under a list of desktop shortcuts and files). It does not matter if the drives are USB or Firewire, and this never happened previous to about a month ago.
I have done all the basic stuff -- verify/repair drives, reboot multiple times, mount & dismount, change connection ports, backed up-reformatted-and restored the smallest drive, fixed preferences (not at all relevant), Disk Warrior repair the devices, set all permissions to R/W, check all device related infos, researched on-line for a week... Nothing. I have even taken the devices to PCs, where they work perfectly, and as expected.
This issue is apparently either a corruption, or a bug induced by Software Update, in the part of the system that handles files and file structures, or possibly the _USB and Firewire_ interfaces.
I just need to know where all those relevant parts are in the system folders, so I can attempt to restore them from a backup previous to the last "Software Update," (to be sure. And to bring this one step closer to being solved).
A system restore really is not an option, as that would require nearly two weeks of re-tweaking everything from the system to every piece of software included (updating the system about 10 times via software update, reinstalling 90% of the actual software packages... and then updating those multiple times, looking-up all the serials that get killed, etc.)
I have to correct this fast, as we need to move the files from the work drives to the archive drives before we run out of room. So any help would be very appreciated... even if you only know where a few of the system components are located (it just might be one of those, causing the issue).

    {The last link in this post is most relevant, except for your recent finding.}
The reference was to the User permissions, per each; as when these
become corrupted, the simple 'repair disk permissions' and other
basic duties do not find an error with them. That is because there is
nothing really wrong with them from that standpoint.
Another odd error can happen if one is resizing partitions in an Intel
based Mac, and also if one has or had a BootCamp partition and
wanted to reclaim space. But not always. Thankfully, the only time
I tried Windows on a Mac, the media install disc was corrupted so
it just didn't happen. That was Virtual PC and Windows on PPC.
Tiger brought with it the ability to non-destructively resize partitions.
However, it was not thought to be successful in non-Intel based Macs.
The discussion on that matter came up a few years ago, so someone
has undoubtably tried that in a PPC and reported findings online.
When file sharing between user-account created content runs amok,
then the system(s) will not allow the content to be moved or shared.
So, if any shared user-account created content (including drives
initialized or handled without permissions ignored, clones wrong,
etc) are not the problem, then how does one explain these wrong
ful action circles-with-lines, or action disallowed warning symbols?
There must be a simpler answer. Do you have cats which have
access to your computers in the off-hours? They do keyboard.
Some have been thought to have technical skills outside of the
usual coy and cute play-acting people think they are limited to.
I'm sticking to the cats theory for now; the time is 3:21AM here
and I only am up to get a drink and look outside at +5°F. calm.

  • Copy files between 2 USB hard drives.

I am trying to copy files between 2 USB hard drives.  I can copy to the clipboard but it won't let me paste in the other drive.  Any ideas?

Check if the destination drive is NTFS. If it is then you only have "Read Only Permission". You need to reformat the drive to "FAT" or Mac OS X Extendend (journaled)" using Disk Utility.
Select the Drive on the Desktop and Press "Command" - "i"

  • File transfer between internal drives extremely slow

Since the upgrade to the latest Lion OSX 10.8.5 on my Mac Pro, file transfer between internal drives is extremely slow. I used Disk Ulitly to repair the drives but no use. What could be the cause? Thanks

Yes I have been transfering the same type of data in the same manner as before, this happened only recently. For example if I transfered lets say a 100MB single file from main HDD to 2nd internal HDD it would have taken around 10 seconds nwo it takes a minute or so. Also my iTunes library is located in the 2nd Drive and since this issue when I play music it keeps cutting off and coming back, I am sure this is due to the slow transfer speed of the drive. I can't figure out why it has gotten so slow, is it the drive or the OSX?

How did you copy files to the external drive, and what files did you copy? Did you drag and drop in the Finder? Use a clone utility? What files did not successfully copy?
If you reformatted the drive as part of your install, then you won't be able to recover any files from the drive. Reverting back to (reinstalling) 10.4 will not help you.
Do you have a complete-drive backup of your old system?

  • I can no longer copy/paste artwork after v10.5.1

The bulk of my library are teaching cd's from the same author. For most iTunes cannot find any info so I have been able to copy/paste the album artwork. Suddenly in v 10.5.1 I can no longer copy artwork.

I have discovered a work around.
Select an album that does have artwork you want to copy.
Drill down to the track level and select a track.
File > Get Info and select the 'Artwork' tab.
Select the artwork and Command-c to copy.
Now back to the iTunes grid display and select an album and right-click in the artwork viewer and paste.

  • After updating numbers and pages I can no longer copy multiple cells from numbers and paste and match style to pages.

After updating numbers and pages I can no longer copy multiple cells from numbers and paste and match style to pages.  I used to be able to select multipule cells in a row (such as company name, address, etc.) then paste and match style on to a pages letter. I found the paste and match style option in the edit menu, however it will only work one cell at a time. Before the update is was working great.

For diagnosing purpose thy the procedure in a new user account and see if it works there. You create a new user account in the System Preferences > Accounts. If it works in the new account it is probably a corrupt plist file that needs to be deleted.

  • Copy Files Between Two Unix Computers

    Hi,
I am trying to write a piece of code that will copy bunch of files from one Unix computer on to another Unix computer. On windows it seems to be pretty straight but on Unix I am trying to understand best way of copying the files. I don't have much expertise in Unix.
Is using FTP the only option for Unix?
    I am not able to create a FILE object by referring to a file on some other Unix box? I tried new File("//unixbox2/temp/123.txt");
Please let me know the different ways to copy files between Unix computers.
