Can no longer open Excel spreadsheets attachments.

I have recently upgraded to iOS 5 on my iphone4 and 3GS and can no longer open Excel spreadsheets attachments from my Hotmail. They come up as an E (which I think is Evernote). I don't want to use Evernote, I just want to view them as I could before. Even simple spreadsheets come as this annoying E when I try to open them. Everything worked fine before I did the iOS 5 upgrade and went with the cloud. I've no idea how to this happend or how to solve it.
Can anyone please help?

Generally if this happens the thing I have found to do is to quit the application and then restart the application by clicking on one of the files (like the ones in your documnets folder), not by starting the application and using the open command. Doing this immediately will usually solve the problem.
This could also be an indication of some sort of file or disk corruption so I would recommend that you not only check the disk using Disk Utility from the CD but also checking your disk permissions just to be sure. Instructions for doing so can be found in steps one and two here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
If the first two steps don't solve the problem then you might as well go to step three, otherwise stop with one and two.
If you have backups and cannot get the files to open then your only other choice will be to restore from the backup copies. Either way I would make sure that my disk was healthy, by following the above noted steps, before doing the restore, otherwise you may corrupt the restored copy.
Good Luck and let us know if this helps!!

winmail.dat files usually mean the email has been sent in rich text format - you could either the person who sent it to send it in a different format e.g. plain text or HTML, or there are a few apps in the store that support it (search for winmail.date in the store).

  • I can no longer open any doc attachments. This was never a problem before. Also the W for Word is not an option in the chooser application drop-down list.

At one point, all my Word icons turned to Microsoft orange icons. I resolved that issue by uninstalling Microsoft Office 2010 and not the starter. I have NEVER had a problem opening doc email attachments I have received. This is a new issue. I used to just double-click on the attachment icon and it opened. Now it gives me nothing. I can't seem to find Microsoft Word as a choice in the drop-down box either. I also tried selecting Microsoft virtual whatever it was, as was suggested in Google, but that did nothing either. I just want to go back to being able to double-click on my attachments and having them pop open. What went wrong in computerland?

Actually, I solved it myself by compacting my inbox. Yes, it was Thunderbird. All my docs can now be opened. Word starter came with my computer already installed. Never had any trouble in two years until recently. I can now pick Microsoft Word virtual handler and it opens it. I still don't know what happened to the Word icon in the drop down box. Maybe it was never there to begin with, because I NEVER had to pick anything to open an attachment before. I just double-clicked on it and it opened.

  • Can no longer open Excel files.

Whenever I try to open an Excel file, I get the message "The file name or path name no longer exists or the file that you are trying to open is the same as another that is read only."
This is the same for all .xls files. I even get it if I try to create a new workbook. I have the files backed up on my iDisk, with iBackup, but restore fails. I can open them with Appleworks. I think that I may have lost a link between user/documents somehow. Can anyone please help?

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • I can no longer open word or excel files from my email in firefox, i can in all other browsers. it started november 5, 2014

Yesterday afternoon, out of the blue, I can no longer open word or excel documents from my gmail account in firefox browser on windows 7. I can in all other browsers. The error message is "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

As a workaround, does it work to save the files first and then open them after saving?
Sometimes when Firefox has problems handing off a download to another program it is caused by a corrupted settings file. That file is hard to edit, so usually we suggest renaming the file to see whether that resolves the issue. Here's how:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
    * (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
Start Firefox back up again and test your Gmail attachments. Any improvement?
Note: This resets some preferences to their defaults, such as which PDF viewer Firefox uses. If you need to update that again, please see this article: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].

  • After my OS update I can no longer open email attachments.  What could be the issue??

After my latest OS update I can no longer open email attachments.  What might be in the issue??

    Quit Mail and restart.
Select each of your mailboxes and select Rebuild under the Mailboxes menu.
If those don't help, then reinstall Yosemite:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Dear Dan,
It was from InDesign that I was creating the shared pdfs. I was one of two Mac drivers in a corporate sea of Win users and had to make the change I mentioned in order for the Win users to see my pdfs for review. The difference from what you appear to be doing was that were all on an MS Exchange Server so the files were shared over the company's Exchange Server e-mail system. However, some of these files occasionally went to outside users via regular e-mail and those people had no issues either.
So what I did was tested and worked for years.
You might look at the Adobe forums or Knowledge Base to see if that is a reported issue with newer version of CS. I was on CS2 when I was doing this, and the other Mac driver was on CS3 but had no problems either.
Some Win users I've talked to find a problem opening some pdfs (not mine) in general and found they had to open Reader first and them open the file from Reader's File menu. That most often happened if the client was using an outdated version of Reader.

I can no longer open any attachments that are sent to me. I click on and get cannot preview (but have had this for ages). I am clicking on download and nothing happens. It does not download. I clicked to install a new version after updating and clicking repair. But still the attachments won't open including invoices I have received today. It is all attachments not just pdfs.

Then most likely it is not caused by Adobe Reader.
Anyway, perhaps someone has some idea, if you give us some details: operating system, browser, email client, ...

  • I have a mac 10.6 system when using firefox, I can no longer open attachments or downloads. I deleted firefox and reinstalled and it still doesn't work.

When using firefox, I can no longer open attachments, pdf or downloads. A new window will open and it is blank. The only way to open an attachment or pdf is to shut down firefox and use safari. Everything works with safari so I can't understand what went wrong with firefox. I even download adobe reader thinking that would help. I then deleted my original firefox and re downloaded firefox again. It still doesn't work.
I am using a 10.6 operating system on my Mac.

Try to disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
*Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader
PDF files may also be found under another entry like Portable document.

  • I can no longer open MS Word. How to restore?

    Hi,
A while ago, maybe a year, I purchased Microsoft Office for Mac. I got Word, Excel and a few other things. I used Word fairly frequently to read .docs. I noticed a couple of months ago I can no longer open Word. I always get an error box 'Microsoft Word cannot be opened because of a problem.' Doesn't say what problem is. My guess is I accidentally deleted something critical to opening and using Word.
I would like to re-install the software. The problem is I can't find the MS Office discs. I do not know if I purchased discs or a download. I know that I purchased it but can't remember how and don't seem to have any evidence.
Excel opens and works fine. And I see the Word icon in my 'Applications'. But won't open.
Is there some way I can find out how I purchased this thru Apple and get a back-up download or something? Is there some registration number or proof of purchase attached to a file on my computer I can use to get a replacement download?
Would/Could I have purchased this as part of a larger purchase -- it's not part of the Snow Leopard Box Set is it? Does not seem to be.
    Thanks.

Check your credit card(s) invoices. You need to keep them for more than 1 year anyway, for tax purposes. You probably can access them on-line.

You're begging the question -- did you purchase it from Apple? Not particularly likely.
