Can no longer write to my external HD

Hi
I have had a WD My Book Studio 2Tb external drive connected to my iMac for some time now. Just this morning once booted up I got a popop to say that I could no longer write to the volume, only read and copy from there.
I looked the permissions in 'Get info' and saw 'You can only read'.
I went into disk utility and ran a verify.
The verify suggested a repair, which did not seem to complete. It told me to save off the files and reformat the disk (I haven't done anything further yet)
FYI Get Info shows the disk is Mac OS Extended format.
Is the disk really fried or could this simply be a permissions issue? I am lost, and any help is greatly appreciated

WD drives are problem EHD's with OS X, I would recommend using a new cable to connect and then re-try. However first try doing a couple of SMC resets and see if it can be seen. If you continue to have problems replace it, I'd suggest a higher quality EHD something like a OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro.

  • External display's brightness can no longer be controlled with external keyboard in 10.8.2

I can no longer control external display's brightness with external keyboard.
Until now my external keyboard controlled external display's brightness and MBPr's keyboard MBPr's brightness. Now the only way of changing external display's brightness is via Display preferences which is cumbersome
Is there any way of going to pre 10.8.2 settings?

I noticed that the keyboard and tablet were'nt working when plugged into a usb hub or monitor usb port.  I had to plug in the keyboard and tablet into a mbp usb port where they worked.  For some reason, after plugging them back into the usb hub they worked again.  Could just be dumb luck though.

  • Can No Longer Write files to a NSF-mounted drive on one Server. Error -36

    Hi Folks:
I have searched the Net (including these forums now) for several hours and found nothing definite.
The story is this: I have a Fedora 14 server that, up to this point, has been acting as a file server. Sometime last week (around the 28th we think) it stopped allowing people to copy files from the Mac OS X 10.6.8 workstations (which is what we have, largely) to the shared drives. It fails with a "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "" can't be read or written. (Error Code -36)."  People can mount the drives in question, see them, read from them, copy from them, but not copy anything, or write anything (Save as from Word) to the drives.
Now at about the time period where this started we moved a mySQL database from this particular server somewhere else. As part of that operation, the server was rebooted. The server where we moved the DB to was not. It also have an NFS share that continues to work.
I have verified service by service that nothing is running that shouldn't be. One of my thoughts was that something came up that shouldn't of when the reboot happened. Everything seems fine in that regard.
My looking through the Net has yielded several possible answers none of which has worked. One has been that this is a sign of bad media.  I have checked the drive array in question three seperate times. It has passed all those times. I started another share on a separate spindle on the server and I still cannot write to this new share on a totally different drive.
The drives in question are formatted for EXT3 (hey, I've giving out as many details as I can here!  :-)  ).
I have also repaired permissions on the SOURCE drives. No luck there.
My export file looks like this:
    /raid/data/BigBang
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,all_squash)
    /raid/data
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
    /raid
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
    /home/rkinne/test
    *(rw,insecure,sync,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
No thoughts on security right now. I'm trying to get this darn thing to work, especially on /raid/data/BigBang. That share WAS "no_root_squash" but I changed it to "all_squash" as I've been flailing around today. There was no change in behavior. The exports file on the other server that is working is virtually identical.
Two Mac workstations work right now. One is running 10.4. The other is running 10.7.3. The rest - the problematic ones - are running 10.6.8. One is running 10.5 and is also not working.
I have also flushed the DNS caches from the servers in question, but its too early to see if that will do something yet.
This issue has flumouxed folks for years now. I understand that. Oddly, it JUST came out of the blue for us.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If using Adobe Camera Raw on camera raw file you either have an XMP sidecar file created or the data is stored in a database.  Which happens it is your option in Edit/camera raw.  If you use ACR and edit a jpeg it does not create a distinct XMP file but it is also not directly written to the image either.  One can still delete the edits in Bridge with Edit/develp settings.
If you use a DNG the metadata is written to the image.  Not sure what process Photo Mechanic uses.
It appears to be a permission problem as other than CS6 Bridge is now 64 bit and has a new cache method there are no changes in how it handles metadata.

  • Time Machine can no longer write to drive

I have been using Time Machine to back up my iMac G5 for over a year. About two weeks ago the computer started acting really strange so I actually restored the entire system from my Time Machine backup. Everything was working great until today. The external hard drive that I've been using all this time is suddenly "read only". How do I change it back to "read/write" so Time Machine can access the hard drive properly?

It's very important to know exactly what you or the computer was doing just before this happened. Usually, things do not happen on their own.
How do I change it back to "read/write" so Time Machine can access the hard drive properly?
Changing it back when it's not clear why it changed in the first place is not always a good thing to do for several obvious reasons.
Right-click on the TM drive icon and select "Get Info"
Under Sharing & Permissions, you should see:
Your name (Me) Read & Write
    (unknown) Read & Write
    everyone Read only
Post back what you see and we can attempt to proceed.

  • Can no longer write metadata to Raw files

My team an d I are working in Photoshop CS5, we write metadata to jpegs and Raw files- saving to Raw database not as sidecar .xmp files.  We are no longer able to save the metadata to Raw files.  There is no error message, the data writes like normal and the user who writes the metadata can see it but when you open in another computer the metadata fields are empty, however the jpegs do have the new metadata.  Was there a setting change at some point? This has been going on for a couple months and I cannot find an answer anywhere.  Again, we batch write to RAW+Jpeg, the jpeg files save the metadata but the Raw files look like the data saved but is not visible on any computer other thant he one that added the new metadata. This is occurring on multiple computers, both Mac and PC.

  • I can no longer edit images on external drive if logged in as another user even with permission.

I have two users on my computer. Me (admin) and another log-in for assistants, clients etc.
I use an external drive to hold images.
Lately I've had a problem where if I'm logged in as Other (this side for everyone else), I often am not able to edit images even though the permissions are set for this log-in to have complete read/write capabilities?
Even sometimes when I'm logged in regularly (my admin side) I have received a "File Reservation" error. It says the file is being used by another user.   ????
Then it asks if I want to use Read-Only and do I want to be notified when the file becomes available. ????
    What's happened to my files?

Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall.

  • Why can't I write to my external hard drive?

I have a new Macbook pro, but when I plug in a USB hard drive it is "Read Only." I can find various places to change this, but they are never active for me.  Anyone know what to do? Thanks!

How is the external drive formatted?
If it is formatted as NTFS and your Mac doesn't have third party software to support wrting to NTFS then it will be read only.

  • Can no longer export projects to external drive in FCPX

I've been successfully using FCPX to edit original movies and export them to an external drive.  After installing the latest FCPX updates I am suddenly now not able to export anything.  The entire Share menu is greyed out.  What's the problem?

    Thanks David.
I have a hazy idea of all this stuff. For the matter, I have been using a single external drive [Seagate 2 TB, with firewire 800] having  3 partitions: I am using one partition [1 TB] for placing my camera footage [as FCPX is unable to make camera archives of the footage, I am resorting to making disc images of the footage and importing relevant files into my events which I am placing on another partition [500GB] of the external drive which I have named as 'scratch disc'. I keep my projects also upon this scratch disc.
Now my question is this: Evidently in time to come I would have this drive filled up with camera archives [in my case disk images], events and projects. Finished projects would have to be moved over to a different drive [for archiving] and thereby allow space in the working drive to import and edit more clips. After making this duplicate copy, can I boldly delete the project from my scratch disc? While making a duplicate copy of the project, what should be the option I should make? My need for the archived project would be like this: to dub it into other languages. Should I opt for duplicate project and referenced events or duplicate project+used clips only.  Whichever of the two I choose, when I reopen the project at a later date from this new drive, will I be able to access all the clips in the timeline of the project and also will the referenced events also appear in the event browser?
Sort of confused and would like to be guided through this important phase of handling or managing data.

  • Can no longer write to USB stick when formatted as FAT/FAT32

I had about 2GB worth of mixed content on an 8GB stick, which I use daily on my Mac (OS X 10.6.2) and at work (XP).
I copied all the files off it onto a folder on my Mac so I could use it to transfer some big files to my mum's laptop (Windows 7).
Having finished the job, I formatted the stick in OS X as FAT, but when I tried to copy my files back, I got an Error Code -36 when writing one of them. I tried formatting the stick in Windows 7 as FAT32, and got the exact same problem.
I then formatted it as Mac OS Extended in OS X (after doing a Verify & Repair), and this time the files all copied across to it perfectly. However when I plug the stick into Windows 7 now, it doesn't show up.
I tried formatting as FAT again in OS X, but again the files won't copy and give an Error Code -36
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Two things to try: (1) On your Mac in Disk Utility, verify that the "Partition Map Scheme" of the USB drive is set to "Master Boot Record". If it's not, repartition the drive to have that scheme. (2) Format that USB drive in Windows.

  • I can no longer copy files manually to our external drive?

Hi - I'm not sure what happened here, and I'm hoping someone can help. Basically, we are starting to film library programs for local TV. A colleague at the high school with a lot of experience was kind enough to buy us a mybook external drive (one terabyte!) to store our video and audio files. We use an iMac and two eMacs for the teen digital film club and have also just been given a white macbook specifically for production. So -
We (my teen assistant and I) had been able to move files over to the drive manually before. But, on getting the macbook, I got some raw film footage onto it, edited it, and then wanted to get that film onto the mybook in order to make room for a second hour of film to be edited on the macbook. But -
As I tried to show my colleague how to connect the external drive to the macbook, some message came up very quickly - did I want to use the mybook to back up the macbook using Time Machine? I tried to click "no" - there was a scary warning about losing all the info on the drive, and I did not want that to happen! I just wanted to be able to move stuff between the computers and the drive, as we have been doing. I don't know what I did wrong, but, after connecting the drive to the macbook, there is an empty file on the external drive which has the same name as the new macbook, and we can no longer copy anything manually. How can I correct this?

Just to let everyone know: my problem is solved - after a fashion.
When I contacted customer support, I got told the formatting of the drive was not a problem; they sent them out this way so they would be universally compatible. But, since we were sharing the drive between macs, the tech support person thought it would be a good idea to reformat it. He also explained that the original formatting didn't allow transfers of more than 4 gigs - a problem for us, since we are regularly working with larger files.
So he told us how to reformat using disc utility in Leopard. And then we discovered our second problem. The disc could not be reformatted. Nor could it be verified or repaired. It is too damaged to use.
We now have a case number and therefore should be able to replace the hard drive. So that's what happened.
