Can NOT delete this file!

Hi ... I have tried to delete this bizarre folder/file, and the computer will not let me. I have tried all sorts of things, including command line inputs that others have suggested. Here's a short screencast of the problem. Please help!!!

You seem to have modified your system, as you have some kind of tabbed interface in the Finder, and the thing in the Trash is part of the "Deskmetrics" spyware. Boot in safe mode (shift key down at startup) and see whether you can delete it.

    Hi,
    You mentioned you tried some steps but I'm not sure what they are, you may try my suggestion to resolve this issue, follow these steps:
    Click Start, right-click Computer, click
    Properties, and then click Advanced system settings.
    On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
    Locate and select the __COMPAT_LAYER variable, and then click Edit.
    Set the value of the __COMPAT_LAYER variable to EnableThemes. Or, delete the __COMPAT_LAYER variable.
    If the issue persists, we can troubleshoot this problem in Clean Boot to determine whether background programs are interfering with PowerPoint:

    No, because iPads do not run Mac OS X. They run iOS.

  • I can't delete this file !!

    Hi,
    Actually I'm really facing a very strange situation..
    It happened that I have a file that all the permissions it has is that it can be read by its owner..
    and to make it even more odd, the owner is 'root'...
    I can't figure a way to remove this file, but I really have to..
    It all started when I tried to remove a probable virus file from a 'ntfs' partition..
    but when I mounted this partition, I found that I can't delete this file...
    Oh, I forgot to say that I couldn't delete it from windows either, so ???
    Any help is appreciated ..
    thanx in advance..

    yehdev_cc wrote:Thank you for the replies...
    @richs-lxh : The problem is that I don't have the permission to change the owner or the permissions.. even the owner of the file (it's the 'root') doesn't have this permission!!
    If you mount the ntfs partition, change ownership and make it writeable, you can do whatever you want to any file. Root is God
    Ok, so go for installing ntfs-3g.
    Now mount the partition to a directory called /windows.
    You can chown the owner of the entire partition recursively with the -R switch. For example:
    su to root
    su
    make a mount directory
    mkdir /windows
    backup fstab before editing
    cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab_backup
    open fstab with nano
    nano fstab
    copy and paste this code (change hda1 to your windows partition) Then "ctrl+X" to exit "Y" to save and "Enter" to quit.
    /dev/hda1 /windows ntfs defaults 0 0
    mount all partitions
    mount -a
    change owbnership to root, recursively, every single file (may take a few minutes)
    chown -R root:root /windows
    add write permissions, recursively, every single file (may take a few minutes)
    chmod -R 755 /windows
    Now go and delete the file. If you can't delete the file I would really like some further information on what virus it is/was, as I have never had any Windows file which I couldn't remove as root.
    PS: If you have "System Restore" enabled on Windows, disable it and delete it. It's the first place where all the nasties go to hide, and then reinfect the system later.

  • What causes "SAFARI can not download this file"?

    I have purchased and downloaded books from WWW.Baen.com in the past with no trouble. When I now purchase and then try to download a book I get this message--"SAFARI can not download this file".
    What has caused this and how do I correct it?
    Thanks

    Fine. Why did this site all of a sudden become incompaatable and how do I correct it. I have not changed anything on my iPad except to install APPLE's updates.

  • I have sent a file to the trash bin. When I come to empty the trash bin everything goes out except this one particular file and I get a note saying the file is 'in use' but it is not. How can I delete this file from trash?

    I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?

    First just try logging out and back in.  Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.
    You might also try Trash It!
    Lastly, look at the following for suggestions:

  • I have no idea where to post this, but I can not delete TextEdit files.

    Tried dragging to trash, doesn't work. Tried highlighting the file and hitting delete, doesn't work.

    Try get info - command + I - and see if you have the permission to read & write textedit files. If you have read only, then you can't delete. You'll need to fix that.

    I use File.delete() to delete a file,
    but it didn't work,
    why?

    Hi All,
    I have been chasing down the solution to this problem in more than one thread, and, for my situation at least, I have found it.
    It was stupidity on my part... that was the problem. No, I did not carelessly fail to do a close() on the stream, or any similar thing.
    No, I stupidly used the filename when I instantiated the File object with which I was to delete the file, rather than the entire path plus filename. Consequently, to the File object, the file didn't exist (you are allowed to create File objects in Java with bogus file names). This can be tested by using the exists() method of the File instance.
    Here's some code that worked for me:
         private void deleteFiles(){
              //Your mission: delete all files in subdirectory "Output" of
              //"C:/Input/".
              File inputDirectory = new File("C:/Input/");
              String[] outputFiles;
              File outputDirectory = new File(inputDirectory.getPath() +
              "\\Output\\");
              outputFiles = outputDirectory.list();
              for(int i = 0; i < outputFiles.length; i++){
                   File aFile = new File(inputDirectory.getPath() +
                   "\\Output\\" + outputFiles);
                   aFile.delete();
    I hope that this is helpful.

  • Can not delete audio files

    I connect the player to my computer and I usually add and delete files in the internal storage space on my NS-8V24 Insignia MP3 player without any problem. But recently I noticed that a few files now show as a square file icon with no name. They still play ok but when I try to delete them I get a error message "The delete has failed. The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected." I know neither has happened as I can still transfer other files to the player and delete them but just not these files. How can I get these files deleted?

    OK thanks, I was not sure if players are set up the same as a computer or not. If you reformat the main hd in a computer you lose the operating system even though you still have the bios and I did not want something like that to happen. :-) In any case I just looked at the player again and the files are gone now. I have not tried to delete them since I got the error messages but they are gone so it's no longer a problem. Thanks for your help.

  • Creative Zen 8GB - Can't delete certain files (Write Protected it sa

    I have added a bunch of mp3s, images and videos to my player, but now when I try to delete some of these files I get a "you can't delete this file because it's write protected", if I check the properties of such files they are infact write protected but there's no way for me to uncheck the box and make them deletable.
    Anyone with the same problem or with a handy solution?
    P.S. I updated already to the latest firmware.

    Yes; I got my Zen this week and had the same problem when I copied over some MP3 files from a CD-ROM, which are write protected when the CD-ROM is created. I thought that the Zen was defecti've but now feel this is either a programmers misunderstanding of Windows Read Only functionality in the Zen -or- when you protect a file from deletion within the Zen, this is what the firmware sets to flag the file as 'Protected (I have not researched this yet).
    My Fix: For some of you this will not be the answer you are looking for but it works and will kept your Zen music file structure and library intact.
    You may need to switch to MTP mode in the creative software before you are allowed to use this technique. Search the forum where to find this checkbox. Otherwise your XP may be able to nati'vely open Explorer windows to the Zen.
    Setup: Open two Windows Explorer windows on your desktop. In one, create a new folder on a hard dri've that has enough space to handle all the music files on your Zen. In another Explorer window, navigate to the Zen music folder.
    1. Use Windows Explorer to copy ALL of your music files From the Zen to a new folder on your computer's hard dri've. If you don't have enough room on your hard dri've (and if not, why don't you? ) move files in stages.
    2. When the files are in your hard dri've's folder, right-click on the new folder and select Properties. Deselect (Uncheck) the Read Only attribute checkbox. If another dialog is displayed, select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" and click 'OK'. This will make all your files deletable on the Zen.
    3. Copy (drag) all the files back to your Zen, overwriting the original files.
    That's it. In the future perform step two before copying any files to the Zen.

    I Found This File (tmp.3.w3kLqg) With Omnidisksweeper in this directory <Private/var/tmp>, It's Size is 4.5Gb , Can I Delete This File ? how can i understand it's necessary ?

    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
    Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo lsof /var/tmp/tmp.3.w3kLqg
    You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
    The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
    Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
    If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Can not delete an empty email

    Morning.
    I've found an empty email in a local mailbox. In the headers viewer only »Today« is displayed as »Date received«, no subject, no sender, nothing else, and no content.
    Mail.app can not display the raw source of this emails and no long headers. And -- most curious -- I can not delete this email. If I try so, the email disappears for a snatch but re-appears instantly.
    I've rebuild the mailbox for two times, but the culprit won't disappear.
    What can I do to fix this problem?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich
