Can not get email
The message 'Can not get mail, The mail server is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail Settings' appears. I know that the info is correct because I have received email previously but not today. I use my iphone as a personal hotpsot for my MacBook and iPad 3 and am receiving mail on the MacBook but not the iPad. I know that I'm in an area that has a weak signal and regularly have to reset for the hotspot but today it seems that it's more than the weak signal. Any suggestions, is there a simple explanation? Do I have to reset anything? I've done the old forced reboot thing.

Have you contacted your email provider to make sure there are no problems on their end? If they say their email servers are working properly, check the outgoing and incoming mail servers entries on your iPhone to make sure both are entered correctly. Enter the outgoing mail server even if the account setup indicates that is optional. -

Some POP email accounts don't allow multiple connections, you might be seeing some type of lockout.

CAN NOT GET MAIL. TURNED OFF IPAD . RESTARTED. VERIFIED PROVIDER SETTINGS. DOES NOT WORK. IF I CANCEL ACCOUNT AND OPEN NEW ONE WILL I LOOSE PREVIOUS MAIL.
I've removed my yahoo account several times. All it does is delete the info off my iPad and doesn't touch the account itself. So I can go back in, re-add the account and then redownload my mail again. I haven't had to change my passwords or anything.

If you established a rescue email address, there will be a link on the "Passwords & Security" page of id.apple.com. Clicking the link will send the reset to your rescue email address (NOTE: This is not the same address as your Apple ID email)
If there is no link on the page, then you didn't establish a rescue email address. Contact AppleCare at 800.694.7466, and ask for account security. You will need to answer some questions to verify your identity, AND you will need access to a computer to generate a temporary support pin.

That usually indicates that the parameters in your email account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars are not correct. Check them for accuracy.
There is also a chance that this is a temporary problem if your email provider's servers are having problems.

The lock indicates your connection to the sever is secure. It is not new and has always been there.
What is the error message exactly? IIRC it says something about deleting messages and compacting the folder. Have you done that? -

i have updated my iphone 5s to iOS8 but it has my old icloud account, how can i change the icloud email address as i can not get passed this page??

please help :-(That's Activation Lock. You will need to remember the Apple ID and password you used to set up the phone.
If you can't remember them, you can go to iforgot.apple.com to try to recover the information.
If you are the original owner of the phone & have proof of purchase, you can try calling Apple to see if they can assist also.

With iCloud on the phone, you will need to remove the account, then add it back in with the new address. It is a bit awkward, but the only way to change the AppleID for the iCloud account login is to delete the account then add it back with the new credentials. You won't loose anything as the iCloud account is still the same one, you just need to re-associate the AppleID credentials for it on the iPhone.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I have tried to change my password and get to the part where you need to verify by answering the questions, and I get can not get any further, as it tells me the answers aren't the ones they have but I know it is correct, so I have asked for an email to be sent, but no email comes.I receive other emails from iTunes but not the one helping me to change the password. Has any one got any idea why?

I verified my email, then went to sign in and I can not get past the Sign In.
I need some help. I made an account and verified my email. I then went to sign-in and a box pops up saying I need to review my account. I go back to review it and it takes me to the support page. In other words... I can not get past the Sign In.
Thanks, Andrew for your help. Not sure if you will see this, but I did the above and it said the HD was okay. Rebooted it and still won't go past login page. Tried it again and this time typed in the line /sbin/fsck -fy and then it came up and said HD was okay, but said something about being modified. I once more rebooted, but it still won't get past the login screen. Besides taking long to reboot, as before, I am able to enter my password, but then it hangs up with the rainbow icon rotating continuously. Does this mean that the disk is corrupt or partially so, and if so, can you advise how I should proceed? TIA again.
