Can not installed mountain lion msg" macintosh hd is using for time machine back up" please help
I downloaded mountain lion but can not install, msg" macintosh HD is using for time machine back up , how can I change that...thanks
Somehow, a Backups.backupdb folder got created on your startup drive.
You won't find it via a Spotlight or Finder search, so open your internal HD via the Finder.
That folder is at the top level. Just delete it.

10.10 Would not install. Said my Macintosh HD was used for time machine
I have a 27" iMac that has been running Lion. I download Yosemite to my computer. Checked "Agree" to terms. Next screen showed my Macintosh HD and my desktop external drive. They were both grayed out. When I rolled the mouse over them it said each was in use to make backups for Time Machine and could not be used to install Yosemite. Only my external drive is used for Time Machine. Does anyone know how to get Yosemite to get past this stopping point?
It was very easy. Click open your Macintosh HD. This is the root directory of your hard drive. Change the view if needed, to show the folders icons. The "Backups.Backupd" folder will be visible. Drag it to the trash. Close the Macintosh HD window. Proceed with your installation of Yosemite. You should have no problems finishing up.

Mac OS X will not install as it states Mac HD is used for Time Machine backups?
I'm not sure what is happening?! I wanted to connect my new wireless trackpad but could not as my mac said I needed 10.6 or later. I checked my mac which I thought had snow leopard on but it states it has 10.5.8? I am now trying to re-load mac OS X from my disc as it states it is 10.6 but it will not load as the installer gets to a point where it states that the Macintosh HD is used for Time Machine backups and consequently will not move on to the next stag? Now I cannot even get out of installing or eject the disc! Can anyone help with what I am doing wrong? VMT
The installer won't load on any HD that contains a Backups.backupdb (used for Time Machine/Backup) folder on it. If the backup isn't in use, delete that folder and 10.6 will install.

Mac os x mountain lion The volume is already used for Time Machine backups
Hey
I downloaded the Mac OS X Mountain Lion and then I clicked on the hard disk and then was "The volume is already used for Time Machine backups.
Can you help me pleaseWell, this isn't a download window, it's an installer window. You need to select one of your hard drive volumes on which to install Lion.
Your computer's main drive apparently has been used by you for TM backups which is a first class "no no." See: OS X v10.6, OS X Lion- Cannot install Mac OS X v10.6 or later on a volume used by Time Machine for backups. -
Can't install Yosemite because my startup disk is used for Time Machine backups?
Tried to install Yosemite, but when I get to the screen which asks which disk I want to install it on, it won't allow me to select my computer's hard drive because "This disk is used for Time Machine backups." Any suggestions?
Because at the time I originally set it up I couldn't afford an external drive for a real backup, but thought it would be useful to have Time Machine copies in case I accidentally deleted a file or changed my mind about having done so. Once I finally got that external drive and started backing up to it, I forgot I had Time Machine files an my startup disc and didn't know that would be a problem. Anyway, thanks for the info, that fixed my problem.

Problem installing Mountain Lion on Mac Pro 3 - currently Snow Leopard
Look at the hard drive where Applications, Library, System, and Users are. There is most likely a backup file there. Delete it.
Can't Install OS on Volume Used by Time Machine -
I am trying to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. When I insert the disk and install starts, it states "This disk is used for Time Machine backups" and Mac OSX can't be installed. Does anyone know how to correct this (since Tiger doesn't have Time Machine)?

Down loaded mavericks, it will not install on my computer because it says" this hard drive is used for time machine back up". So I used my old computer hard drive for back up and reloaded the program but it still says the first hard drive is being used.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Make sure you have selected your MacBook Pro's hard drive as the destination to install Mavericks. If so, you have the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive.
That's the folder used by Time Machine to store backups of your files, and the Mavericks installer understands that your internal hard disk is the Time Machine drive.
To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb", empty the Trash and run the Mavericks installer. Finally, install OS X Mavericks -
I cannot install ODX Yosemite over OSX Mavericks as my Mac Book Pro (early 2011) advises that the disc "Mackintosh HD" is used for Time Machine back ups. This is not the case however as I use a separate external HD for this purpose, help please ?!

Can't load Mavericks says that my disk is used for Time machine.
I am unable to progress with the loading because when it asks which disk to load it on, I mouse over my hard drive and says this disk is used for Time machine back up. I have an external hard drive for the back up and there is nothing in my Time Machine settings that has my hard drive. It is a Macbook Pro 15" 2011.
Disconnect the external drive. Sometimes, that message appears because the folder used by Time Machine to store backups is in the root level of the hard drive, so open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb" and empty the Trash. Finally, open the Mavericks installer again and install OS X Mavericks -
Unable to install Mountain Lion because HD is "being used for backups"?
I have been unable to install mountain lion because it is saying that my hard drive is being used for time machine backups. That makes no sense, because I use an external hard drive to backup my computer. I'm not sure why this is happening.
Do you, for some reason, have an item named "Backups.backupdb" on your hard drive? If so, you need to get rid of that in order to install.

Lion installation problem- says hard drive is used for Time Machine back-ups!
I just purchased & downloaded Lion to install on my Apple laptop, but when I went to install it, I got the message:
"This disk is used for TimeMachine back-ups."
What the heck? As I use an external drive for TM back-ups, I'm really confused! How can I get Lion to install on my hard drive? I went so far as to turn off TimeMachine (see image, below), but it's still not working.
Any ideas? This is really frustrating!Kathy,
Intel and Universal apps should be ok. You can check this massive list for specifics on any application incompatibilities.

Just to confirm, was the problem Norton or was the backup directory present?
Glad your up and running now.
@Colin, Yeah it's the leftmost black and yellow. It's an image burned in my head from the old PC days. -
Hi,
I'm trying to back up my macbook with time machine on the Lacie external driver I usualy use for this, but today my computer doesn't find the driver. I haven't done back up in 6 month.
Today, the Lacie driver is pluged and running, but the computer just does'nt find it.
what shall I do ?Some things to consider:
Is the drive mounted, i.e., visible via Finder and/or on the Desktop?
Is the drive still selected in System Preferences, Time Machine? If not, use the "Select Disk" button.
Is Time Machine still turned on (System Preferences, Time Machine)?
Can you see the drive (and mount it) using Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder)?
