Can not mount old Exabyte 8505 tape drive

Up until 2001 I was using an Exabyte 8505xl tape drive to back up video (using exatape 160mxl or sony QGD-160M 8mm data cartridges; 160 meters - about 7Gb each). The software used to store to tape was Optima Technology Desktape Pro (see http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/3608
for more details). I was using Mac OS 8.1 at the time as well.
I still have the tapes but can not now mount them to retrieve the data - Optima came out with a newer version of their software (called DeskTape Pro 5.7) - it allowed me to mount one tape but since then has refused to work.
Has anyone had similar problems
Any inexpensive solutions
Any suggestions gratefully accepted
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Older tapedrive backup

njsharp,
This is where I would start if you value your data.
Confirm the hardware. Start from scratch without disturbing what you have. Get another hard drive for $4.00 or less. Do a clean install of system software (8.1) and DeskTape Pro. See if you can get the drive to recognize the device. Look at Drive Setup. Will it see it, even to say "this device not supported' or "cannot be initialized?" Rule out hardware issues.
Buy backup hardware. That has a double meaning, no pun intended. Buy redundant hardware. Watch thrift stores or check on line for older Macs that had DAT or other 8MM drives. Buy the whole computer for $5.00. Recyclers have spare parts as well. If you get to Seattle on occasion, email me and I can give you directions to sources near Safeco Field. I just about said the King Dome. It has been a while since that was around.
Then tackle software issues. You said the new software worked once. Are all extensions installed and selected? Are any corrupted? Will reinstalling the extensions revive contact for one more try?
I had some Earthlink software that killed OS 8.6. I did three clean installs in a row to learn that the software would only allow one connection to the internet before corrupting a file and require a clean install. Having an archive CD (not an install CD) of my personalized system allowed me to rapidly replace my entire system folder by booting from the CD with extensions off, trashing the old system folder, making a Finder copy of the archived system folder from the CD over to the hard drive -that will not work from an install CD because it is missing key components and your Exabyte software- and then rebooting from the hard drive.
Decide how valuable the data is and to what measures you are willing to go. If you are willing to tinker, the Northwest has its share of resources. I presume that you would like to solve the issue without spending $285 here:

Good luck.

Reinstall MacFuse with the one from http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg. If that doesn't work, you can use Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.0 which has been designed to work with Lion.

  • "mount: only root can mount" or "Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS"

I'm trying to set up an NTFS partition to use as a common data partition between Arch and Windows. I have it added to fstab so that any user in the ntfsuser group can have access to it, but if it gets unmounted accidentally from the "eject" symbol in the nautilus gui, you have to sudo to mount it back up. Is there a way for it to be remounted automatically when you click on the partition again in Nautilus? I've searched all through the forums and looked through several articles on the wiki but haven't been able to come up with anything. The error I get says
mount: only root can mount /dev/sda4 on /home/adam/UserData
I've tried adding the users option to fstab, but that only manages to change the error to
Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE
library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated
FUSE support and make it setuid root. Please see more information at
    http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#unprivileged
I've tried the suggestions at the link in the error, as well as tried the solutions given in [solved] Gnome : mounting NTFS partition as user and a few other posts, but still nothing. If possible, I'd prefer to stay away from the users option in fstab, since it adds a redundant link to the sidebar in nautilus with a different name.

@Mr.Elendig: It is mounted through fstab normally, but in nautilus there's an eject icon on the sidebar next to the name of the drive which I've accidentally clicked on a couple times if I'm just trying to open the drive real quick. Once its been unmounted like that it won't let me remount unless I use sudo. I'm just looking for something to make it a little more convenient than having to pop open a cli and type in a password.
I'll try the suid root when I get home tonight, otherwise I'll look into autofs.

In new iPad 4g, when sim card is not inserted, I can not find the enable 4g tap in the setting-cellular data tap, can some one please tell me if this is normal and if so, then when it appears, thanks

If the SIM is out of your phone, find my phone needs a data connection, so could use wifi - IF in range of a wifi and one that it can join (ie. a known network or one that is wholly open so no login required).  Your phone could also simple be turned off, so not findable, or it may have been restored (plugged into iTunes and restored as new) again, making it permanently unfindable.  Honestly, for someone stealing an iPhone, this is likely the first thing they do - restore as new and it is theirs forever.
Find my iPhone is tied to the users iCloud account - the find function is part of the iCloud account's services and it communicates with the iCloud servers over a data connection - either wifi or 3G.
Have you set up your iCloud account on your replacement phone, and is it working properly on that phone?

  • I can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.

Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems?  If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.
Btw this group is for discussion of the Support Communities itself, you;d do better posting to Lion group. I'll see if a host will move it.

  • Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive...SMC 1.3

    Hi all !
    I have a problem. I'm have a macbook pro Santa Rosa =

This morning I saw the update for the SMC firmware (1.3).
Before restarting, I have this error :

Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported. You must be booted from a GUID partiton or RAID scheme.
When I went into Disk Utility in order to check, here is what I have =
    Name : FUJITSU MHY2200BH Media
    Type : Disk
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
    Disk Identifier : disk0

I thought Boot Camp could be involved becauseI know it's the only thing related to the EFI.
I searched on internet, and Ifound nothing. There was a solution in order to reset the partition table, but the tool is no longer available. The link on on the application explains that I have to reformat my macbook pro. I find a bit weird to make this , I can't spend hours for backup / restore just because the SMC update does not work. have you any lead for me ?
    Thanks ,

    Have you tried this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    Hi,
This issue indicate corrupted database or corrupted logs. I suggest you to check and repair the database or check and repair the database log.
    1. Check the state of database by following command: eseutil /mh "Path of the database"
    Ps: Default path of the database is “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Mailbox\Mailbox Database\Mailbox Database.edb”
Default path of the log files is “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Mailbox\Mailbox Database\E00”
    2. If the state is in clean shutdown, move all the log files from the Transaction logs folder location and then mount the database.
    3. If the state is in dirty shutdown, check if the log files that is indicated as Logs required is available or not.
    4. You can run Eseutil ml “Path of the log file\e00” to make sure that the log files is required is in a Clean state. This command will help you check the health of all the log files in the location.
    5. If the log files are healthy, then try Soft recovery with the command Eseutil /r e00 /l ”Path of log files” /p “Path of the database”
    Note:
Make sure you make a backup of the database before attempting any kind of repairs
    6. Once the command completes successfully, then mount the database.
    7. In case the required log files are not available in a clean state or missing, either restore from a successful back up or perform Hard repair with defragment.
Refer to this file about hard repair:

    Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:
How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
If the entire system hangs or locks up (for example, if the system clock freezes and stops counting up), you may also be experiencing some variety of Kernel Panic. If that is the case, you may also find this article useful:

  • Time Capsule Error "Can not mount"

I have been using time capsule with the 1TB router for months. After the recent updates, when time capsule runs I get the error "can not be mounted". I have turned off the router and restart the laptop without success. Anyone have similar problems and anyone have a solution for a novice?
    thanks

I'm having the same issue of an "Unmountable Drive" issue with my Time Capsule. I did find this from GDMACK in another thread:
"Solved the problem by making the name of the time capsule hard drive "TIMECAPSULE" with no special characters or spaces."
I don't know if it will help our issue but it's worth a shot.

  • Mac Mini not reading old pc ext hard drive

Have a five year old external hard drive from a previous PC.   I connect it to my Mac Mini and the device listing shows it is there, but the letters are not black.  They are light grey and i am unable to open the drive when i click on the listing.

Sounds like it is not mounted properly, damaged or perhaps is protected by some sort of windows encryption.
Open Disk Utility and see if you select the drive in the list of drives and then mount it using the blue Mount button. If not then disconnect the drive, restart the Mac Mini and reconnect the External Drive.
Now if it is still not mounting and/or you are unable to manually mount it using Disk Utility, it is either damaged and needs repairs or unencrypting using a windows computer. Of course I could be totally wrong about the windows encryption thing, because I don't use them all that much.

I'm using the latest kernel. The device is a macally Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external drive enclosure. Yesterday my BIOS was detecting it, and later that night I actually mounted the device with mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/drive_2, I fired up the computer today and it's not there anymore, not in BIOS, not in the OS. This thing is acting very buggy and It's starting to scream hardware issues. There is a blue light on the enclusure that tells you when everything is okay, but now the light is red. Plus I can't hear the drive spinning.
